You can still remember everyone's reaction when you told them you enlisted.

Dad was prouder than you'd ever seen him, talking about how honorable and glorious it would be. If you could go back, you'd punch him right in the jaw just for lying to you so blatantly.

Your little brother thought it was so cool, that you'd go and get to fight the aliens, and that maybe one day he'd be just as cool as you. You hope to whatever gods are out there that he hasn't followed you out here.

Mom was the only one who seemed to understand, who knew what would happen when you came out here. She begged and pleaded for you not to go. For you to stay home. To stay safe. You reassured her that you'd be alright.

You wish you'd listened to her.

You were identified as a Pilot candidate shortly into your training. An honor, they said. And like an idiot, you accepted. They tore you apart, cell by cell, and put you back together. Months of agony, physical therapy, and recovery, over and over again, until they finally shaped you into something... different. Not human, not Arx, not even uplift. You could only be called what you were- Pilot.

And that was just where the nightmare started.

Because now that you've gotten to the front line itself, you know the truth. There's no glory out here. No honor. No heroes.

Only monsters.

Welcome to Here Be Dragons, a mecha RP with horror elements (think of it as "Evangelion Lite," and you'll be in the right ballpark). You, the players, are members of the Red Line Coalition, the first line of defense in a 100-year war against an alien menace known as the Shard. Specifically, you are a Pilot- heavily modified soldiers bonded to giant bio-mechanical armors called Dragons. The story will begin with the deployment of a new, powerful prototype Dragon codenamed "Queen Unit," along with the most capable Pilots they can find as their escorts. The plot will be filled with twists, turns, and trauma from all sides, as your Pilots deal with war, death, suffering, drama, body horror, and all that other good stuff.

Does that sound fun to you? Good. Then we can begin.

Right now, I'm looking for somewhere in the vicinity of 7-8 Pilots in the central "Virtue Squadron," with some supporting characters mixed in (mechanics, control techs, a doctor or a bartender, perhaps). Two Pilots in particular will be singled out, The Veteran who leads the squadron, and The Prototype, piloting the powerful Queen Unit, with all the baggage that that implies.

Questions? Comments? Declarations of undying love? Now is the time to get it out there. Let's see what we have to work with, shall we?

I'm open to this. I'll start thinking of my character. Is there any more info on the world outside? That could lead characters to go for the pilot program.

@Reflection Glad you asked! This is actually a space-faring RP. The Red Line is made up of the frontier worlds of Origin territory, where the Shard is encroaching. Much of the motivation for soldiers to enlist is the thought of taking back worlds that were previously lost to the Shard. It’s a big galaxy, after all- no one wants to stay cooped up in in the core worlds, waiting for Shard to come kill them.

@EnterTheHero So are the mechas like dragons, or what? Is there an example of their designs?

@Reflection Dragons are reverse-engineered from the flesh and blood of Shard warbodies, and thus are more a mix of organic and mechanical in design. If you want an idea of the kind of look you want to go for...

...then this might help.

Pictures won’t necessarily be needed- a good description might actually be preferable. Long story short is that Dragons are living mechanical organisms, bonded to a Pilot in order to achieve their full potential.

I'd be keen on seeing what a mecha rp like this has to offer. :o

What kind of modifications are necessary to make a 'pilot' out of a person?

@Lumiere Physically, Pilots are altered using extensive gene therapy and cybernetic implants to make them more Shard-like, to integrate more completely with their Dragons. Mentally, they must train to commune with the AION (Artifical Instinct Override Network, essentially the brain of their individual Dragon) in order to operate in tandem with their personal alien.

Both regimens are equally difficult, enough so that approximately 1 in 4 Pilot candidates do not survive the process. Surviving Pilots, however, are physically stronger, faster, and more mentally acute than baseline or even most augmented examples of their species.

Plus, you know, they have a Dragon.

So dragons would all be physically shaped as some conception of a dragon or are there more humanoid or otherwise varying body types?

Can someone crippled or disabled become a pilot? Would be neat to have someone who no matter what they have had to go through and what they will be forced to do in the future is fine so long as they have functioning limbs again or for the first time in their lives... and maybe regretting the mindset later.

@Cultural Titan Dragons have reptilian features across the species, but their form and function can be incredibly diverse. They just all have dragon-y features, even if just cosmetically.

Pilot candidates require only two things to become Pilots: physical compatibility with the implants, and mental compatibility with the Dragon. That’s all. So, yes, there are Pilots like how you described- willing to put themselves through hell just to feel whole again.

Some regret it. Some don’t. Depends on what you consider a fair price.

@Kitty I don’t plan on an upper limit for players or even Pilots, really. Just as many people as I can get interested. OOC, as mentioned, will be up this weekend.

I like this concept! I don't have much experience with mecha RPs, if that's fine.

@Lucky That’s fine! This is a very unconventional mecha concept, anyway. Rather than focus on the technical aspects of mechs or mobile suits or what have you, think of his more as a dragon rider with their dragon (hence the name). Mechanical they may be, Dragons are still living beings. A Pilot who forgets this fact is a dead man.

@EnterTheHero Great! That alone gave me some ideas to work on when it's time to write up my pilot. So just to clarify, every pilot part of the Virtue Squadron; do they all have to be fresh pilots or can any be transferred over from another squad (aside from The Veteran)?
