Map!

Edit:
So I've got a conundrum. If we accept the distances that real-life gives us, then to get to any other empire in a reasonable amount of time (say, 5-10 years to get to the Septonium Concordant), then my ships have to travel at four to two thousand c (that's 4000-2000 times the speed of light). People might be justifiably frightened of such colossal speeds. Even then, a "turn" in this RP would have to cover a year or so for ships to get anywhere any time soon. Alternatives include wormholes, jump-lanes, and other non-"FTL Drive" types of propulsion, but I find it mildly annoying that to function as a space-empire, we'd have to use that type of tech (different types of FTL travel mean different tactical and roleplay advantages). Additionally, we'd need to create a jump-lane/wormhole map for most of the galaxy, and everyone would have to pick locations again.

Or we could shrink the entire galaxy by a couple of factors of ten.

Or maybe we're okay with ships that can go 4000c.

Thoughts? (Obviously Mattmaganon gets final say)

hmmmm......... the ships in Mass Effect seem to get around the galaxy fast enough, but that's with the Mass relays, I'm not sure how they work but my vote is making the galaxy a bit smaller =3

A mass Relay may work, Technologically advanced gates can be used to transport the ships at hyper speed but it really depend's on what the other's think

I wouldn't mind making the map smaller. Although I'd also be fine with specific jump-lanes. Or, we could have some warp mechanism. Maybe needing special components for your ship or special navigators to make it work. So, it would still take a turn to get somewhere but it wouldn't be an ic year. Just a suggestion.

For extremely long distances we can just have specific jump lanes, using the mass relay method or something like whats in cowboy bepop. Also for medium to short range jumps we can use the slip-space method, so yea kinda like a wormhole.

there's also phase space technology, from what I've heard it's apparently faster then light speed by a long shot, I'm not entirely sure how it works, but if I had to take a guess, I'd say it phases one into another dimension that's smaller then the first while traveling at light speed, making travel time much shorter between star systems, and almost close to instantaneous when traveling to planets in a star system =3

To use the mass relay method, there must be an ancient civilization responsible for building them (right?). I mean we simply can't make them ourselves because it would clearly bend the matter of the galaxy in our own hands, and none of us are from tier 1 civ. Maybe the best move would be making the map smaller?

Every nation can have established High speed space travel lanes, things we have built specifically to move around our "empires". It would be one way of telling when your in another nations territory.

So, small question. Are we just going to go about our stuff until someone does something or will the host give us a plotline? Maybe a planet or a system filled with valuable knowledge or resources or something that we will all compete for? Or will it be just war?

I guess that's one convenient way to solve our distance problem.

I was actually thinking of doing something along those lines. Introducing a Galactic event similar to The Galactic Layline from Outlaw Star. A race so old that they pre-date this galaxy, created a data-bank full of knowledge, and an A.I. powerful enough to grant wishes to people by re-writing the fabric of the galaxy. Every planet capable of supporting life has a large temple built by this race that tells them the coordinates of this databank, the problem is that, it's also surrounded by ancient defense systems, the rules say that "Only those with purest intentions may have their wishes granted. So, most governments are either after a fuckton of power, or protecting anyone else from using it. And naturally... There are pirates and rogues who want to wish for a mountain of cash larger than the north face of The Eiger

Sound good?

Sounds like a great idea.

Indeed, that sounds amazing. battling eachother while battling an A.I :3

I also really like the story element. Although it gave me another question. You said pirates and rogues would be after it, so does that mean you could recruit some as mercenaries?

Well, Azico, I did state that one of these temples was built on every planet capable of sustaining life. So your guys should have one as well.
