@LordOfTheNight Everyone starts somewhere! I reckon I'm pretty good at helping new players ease into things, and we do seem to have other experienced people here, so if there are any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

@Dogematix I feel ya, man. I really feel you... sorry, I'll keep my hands to myself. But yeah, if you want in, all you have to do is apply!

@Tangletail@Asura@Vertigo@DrakeEricsen@Ambra@The Harbinger of Ferocity

So, there are a good nine people interested in this game - and I'm really only willing to take six players, seven at a stretch, much as I hate to turn someone away. However, I assure you, I will give each of you fair consideration when the character sheets start to come in - I'll be adding the code and an example into the original post in the next couple of days. I advise you to start thinking about your characters now. And I can't stress this enough - make me want to know the character. Your character doesn't need to be fully fleshed out right away, but the basic concept is vital. Interesting is investing, and if you have a hook/want me to provide one, all the better.

Some basic info;
  • We're going by 27-point buy rules here for your Ability Scores - if you don't know what that means, say so and I'll explain.
  • All races, class options, backgrounds from the Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Elemental Evil, and Volo's Guide to Monsters (plus Tortle Package) are permitted, excluding the Yuan-Ti and Triton races.
  • Anything from UA, Mordenkainen's, Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron, and Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica are not permitted. Homebrew content is also disfavourable, but if you really want to use homebrew content, PM me the details and I'll consider it.
  • Anything I consider to be too dark or too inappropriate will not be considered. There are some general topics which you should probably steer clear of; use your imagination.
  • I will not be accepting characters on a first come, first serve basis. Speed helps, yes, but nobody has the exact same schedule.
  • You are free to make multiple characters, but for the initial application, you may only submit one.

I'm half tempted to roll a Kobold in a campaign about dragons.

Mind if I made the even odd number and odd one once again? 🤣
I would love to apply too.

@Tangletail Well, you've got me excited now... so even if it's not your first character, I expect it to be your second after the first has their untimely demise, of course

Got an idea for a Kenku Rogue. Well... It started as an idea last night, by now it's developed into a full concept and nearly complete backstory in my head. Welp.

Given there are so many new players interested, @CollectorOfMyst, I would much rather afford them an opportunity to play in my stead rather than I forcing my way in. That said, I will have continued interest but will hold off for the time being; count me as first of the reserve, should you need another player for the game at the start or down the line. If you have need of me in such a way, I would need little more than a day's notice to have one drafted and complete.

@Vertigo Hmm... I forgot about Kenku. I might have to say no to that; I intend for this to be high/medium roleplay. Not every conversation needs to end in a quest - and not every battle will end by killing or subduing all of the enemies. Their lack of voice might make this difficult for you. I want to stay true to the lore, but if you are dead set on the Kenku, then we can discuss it, or come up with an alternative (such as a raven-themed aarakocra with some kenku traits).

@The Harbinger of Ferocity I understand your concern about letting the others play; however, I would still like you to make a formal application if you're agreeable. You were, after all, the fourth person to express interest. Honestly, I didn't expect that much interest; the fact that eleven of you decided that my unoriginal story, from a poorly-experienced DM, was worth applying to, has made me really happy. So... thanks, all.

I suppose then I must ask at this point if you allow "refluffing" of races or classes, nothing mechanically changed at all, @CollectorOfMyst. Suspecting that is possible based off the initial post, I imagine sending you a private message with the idea would be best?

@The Harbinger of Ferocity I allow slight refluffing, yes. There are some things that I might change, remove, or add if it pleases my players. While I am not above refurbishing a race, it must stay true to the great majority of its ideas - for example, I imagine aasimars to look more human, but featuring traits that make them look more... unusual. This can include very pale or very dark skin that does not tan/lose tan, an unusual marking somewhere on the body or in multiple places, jewel-toned eye and/or hair colours - not always uniformly (see Yasha from Critical Role), and so on. This makes them less distinguishable, but much more interesting, in my book.

TL;DR - Yes, PM me.

Hmm, I might have misunderstood their lore, then; I took this

can communicate only by using sounds they have heard. Most kenku use a combination of overheard phrases and sound effects to convey their ideas and thoughts.

to mean that as long as they have heard someone use certain words and phrases, they'd be able to use them in turn - it'd just be sort of a patchwork job and they wouldn't be really eloquent. Kind of like someone speaking a foreign language they're still learning; not able to use idioms or imaginative descriptions, but able to communicate on an understandable level by using what they know and substituting more complicated words for simpler ones.

EDIT: A tweet from Jeremy Crawford seems to suggest something similar.

Another one here, as well.

Could I PM my idea to you to see if it'd fly? (Pun unintended but fitting). If it seems like it'll be a no go in the end, that's also fine; I do have an old idea for an Aarakocra that I've yet to get to use, so it can be my backup. So I'm not dead set and can change if needed!

In my experience, kenkus are capable of resolving things peacefully. But they do so differently. A kenku can also still speak, provided fhey built up a catalog of voices with different words spliced together.

Kinda like how bumblebee rapidly scans radios to speak in the transformer movies.

@Vertigo Yes, you can PM me. You don't need permission! I have been thinking of ways we can do things, though.

@Tangletail Oh, no, I wasn't saying that kenku are violent! I was saying that Vertigo might have [i]difficulty[i] roleplaying. It'd take a lot of creativity to say things through either piecemeal sentences, or using sounds/images. Especially since Kenku literally, have no creativity.

As of this moment, my current draft sheet is complete as requested. The most I can say without spoiling anything as of yet is that the character is a cleric with War as their domain, although not likely to be considered an uncontrolled, hungering warmonger by any means. Something far more restrained and appropriate given the setting as described thus far.

@CollectorOfMyst Are we going hard and fast on the absolutely no UA content rule? I'm thinking of doing a beast master and the base version is very whelming.

@Asura Agreed, it's terrible. I'll look into some alternatives, we'll have it figured out by 3rd level if you're one of the players. If we don't, I might have to ask you to consider a different subclass ^^;

@DTHar Yes, you do. All characters start at first level, using 27-point Point Buy, and must take the standard gear for their class and background.
