Smoothly. Things were going smoothly. No one seemed to have noticed the nervousness she hid. Matthew even gave her a lingering smile, and that felt good. It felt like recognition and success. Her heart rate slowed slightly and her smile became just that much more genuine as the idea that she was ‘selling’ her image of a calm, confident, and playful heroine settled in. A subtle warmth filled her chest, and the tapping of her finger on her hip slowed and then absently stopped without her noticing.

Matthew’s words washed over her and she absorbed them until his voice cut off and she blinked, stirred out of the moment by the physical interruption of John’s entrance. Her eyes widened the barest fraction before narrowing down, the smile slipping away as the seriousness of the situation crystallized in her mind. Though subtle, she noticed the shift in the room’s atmosphere as well, but she didn’t let it shake her, tightening her jaw before consciously relaxing. Despite her efforts some of the tension remained.

It seemed she’d be taking on more serious responsibility and action sooner than she’d expected; the thought made her twitch and simultaneously feel a small jolt of thrill shoot through her body. With the tension, the static of her own suppressed nervousness, and her own internal excitement, she briefly felt like a livewire. Her lips twitched upwards slightly, she swallowed, and then swallowed again, letting out a long breath as she slipped out of her casual stance.

’Time to make preparations.’

Immediately she willed her power into action, tiny forcefields forming near the ground and within a foot of her body. She turned part of her attention to taking in the back and forth: the organization of human resources, as it were. She understood resource management well, even if not so much in the human sense. Her gaze slid to 4sight, and then between John and Matthew, before settling on John. She considered addressing him directly for information regarding the Shaker in question, but thought better of it; something about him dissuaded her from that course. Instead she glanced at 4sight, wondering if he was going to be briefed or if this had been their briefing.

She frowned slightly and then wiped the expression from her face. Only several seconds had gone by, but already, the observant individual might have noticed the transparent, faintly blue array of forcefields forming around her feet and legs. Unencumbered by the forming pieces of the construct, Presidio took a moved to stand nearer to 4sight before turning towards John and Director Matthews.

Presidio had decided, despite her buzzing anxiety, to address the room: “May we have more information regarding the shaker or should we expect to be briefed further enroute?” With some half of her focus dedicated to the construction of useful implements for the coming exchange, Kari had actually managed to make herself sound almost…imperious. Calm, discerning, in control. A flicker of pride slipped through her mask, apparent only in a brief upwards tick of her lips.

This was real. She was a hero. She had a goal.

Now all she needed was information and to be placed before her target.

Kari as Presidio, was raring to go!

Audrie finished nearly jumping out of her skin after this other girl with dyed hair had picked literally the same out-of-the-way alley as her --but she'd just looked over her own shoulder and then slumped on a wall, not noticing Audrie, oh yeah, because I'm invisible-- when the world dropped an even bigger surprise in her metaphorical lap.

Nyooom. Helicopter? First Guard.

Even as it passed out of sight and the chaotic wind of downwash stopped pouring into the alley, the dark blue aircraft loomed large in Audrie's mind, a beacon of authority, power, and danger. It was like how on a hot day you could always tell where the sun was because you could feel its heat bearing down on your whole body, an ever-present gradient from hot to cold tugging on you the same way the earth's core tugged on a compass, or how a lighthouse could light up a whole sea at night. Proclaiming 'Stay away' for all to hear.

Audrie glanced at the other girl in the alley --she'd sure acted like a cape with that other cape in front of the store hadn't she-- and was about to get back to her own godforsaken business with that dumpster when the megaphone, words resolving even at this distance past the electronic and aerodynamic noise, gave her the why to go with the helicopter's what. God damn, that close? This whole area is going to be a shitshow of capes and police lines, if it isn't already. Or even worse if I know First Guard's reputation.

Audrie took another brief, longing glance towards safety and supply (actually just the corner of the alley, strewn with stray garbage) and then the two girls shot in opposite directions. I'll have to stick my neck out some time or other to get more than online rumors, so it might as well be while the capes are all distracted in each other's company, easier to watch, and holding back for hostages. If only I'd brought a costume and a scanner. Audrie followed the signs of impending violence.

"CAPES ARE TRASHY! WE DON'T NEED CAPES!" Damien was running around the hobby shop, frantically shouting his Anti-Cape messages to everyone in the shop taking a break from protesting. Charlotte was furrowing her brow at him all the while, staring him down with as much disappointment as she could muster. This was another reason nobody liked him at the shop. He kept trying to push his ideas that all capes were bad onto everyone else.

"Damien, do you mind not shouting in here? Not everyone's agreeing with your ideas." Charlotte was sick of Damien's shit, to say the least, since she was both a cape herself and she had her own beliefs on the matter. "Capes did try to save the world, and some still do, y'know?"

"Say what you want, Starlotte, but everyone here knows that Capes are bad and deserve to be destroyed. The last thing we need are more superpowered circus freaks roaming around, 'helping' whoever they can."

"Ok, but why aren't you shouting that outside? The four customers we have in here don't need you to keep rambling about your thoughts while they're trying to look at merch." Charlotte raised her eyebrows and folded her arms. One of the customers in the store had nodded towards her in the meantime, seemingly in support of what she'd said before. "And, for the last time, please don't call me Starlotte. I'm not okay with you doing that."

"Starlotte, Starlotte, Starlotte. You're just shrouded in your myths. Soon enough you'll come to see my side and join me in making sure capes stop showing up and appearing." Damien smiled towards her with malice and mockery, leaning against the counter with his sleazy attitude. He really just seemed to look like that stereotypical indian shifty tech support guy, except you could finally put a face to him, and it was very unpleasant.

"You're not working today, and I can kick you out of..." Charlotte stopped as they heard the sound of distant helicopter blades, tilting her head as she heard them, the sound accompanied by footsteps heading down a small flight of stairs. "... do helicopters normally fly this low?"

The assistant manager finally dropped from the last step in the shop as he walked towards Charlotte and Damien both, his own eyebrow raised. "No, I don't think so."

Damien ran to the door, looking outside it to see where the source of the noise was. "See, Starlotte?! This is why we don't need capes!!!"

Charlotte and the AM walked to the door, looking out to see a ton of cables, a captive pilot and helicopter, and the perpetrator to the whole ordeal being cradled by some pretty tough-looking cables. Surprisingly, the trio of hobby workers could hear the voice of the perp as they spoke out to their audience.

"Hello, my name's Spindle. I've got a hostage, and one term.

“Disband the First Guard."
"Spindle"

"Like always, I'm right. It's okay everyone, I'll be signing autographs soo-"

"Damien, shut the hell up." Charlotte curtly said, turning to the assistant manager. "Are we closing up shop today because of this event?" The manager only calmly nodded, allowing Charlotte to take off her apron quickly and throw it behind the counter.

"Sorry, sorry. I've just gotta go and make this urgent phone call. I dunno if they're gonna cancel my appointment or not after this event." With that, Charlotte grabbed her bag and scooted out the store's door, running forward while pulling out her phone. Of course, she didn't actually have to make a phone call, but she did have to go play dress-up for a little while, at least to offer her services to help the Guard out in trying to alleviate this issue.

Charlotte ducked into an alley as soon as she could before she found herself in a hardlight form. Aesthetic was here to rise and shine, though she definitely had to handle one thing first before anything else could be done.

Within seconds, the cape's legs extended past her hips and knees, stretching all the way up to allow her to climb onto the rooftop of a nearby building. From there, she looked up at the scene playing out in front of her, before bringing up her phone to face the scene.

Click!

"Nice. That'll help with the blog." Aesthetic smiled to herself as she put her phone and bag down next to a vent. She'd come back for those later, and certainly nobody would be able to find those there. She wasn't too worried about people stealing them, more or less she was worried that they'd break in the heat of action.

Once again, Aesthetic's legs stretched out, and she found herself on a higher rooftop watching the scene play out. She decided to stay uninvolved for the time being, but if she needed to spring in to save the day, she was more than happy to do so.

Junior Guard

A Call to Action

Calvin Ball took being told to follow in stride (ha) quickly falling in step behind the Director’s secretary as she made her way across the hall to pick up another one of the outlying capes. She was curiously examining the older cape with the tilt of her head as they spoke, this “Coil” woman had a great plant witch theme going on and mentally the young heroine was taking notes on how to improve her own costume. The interesting appearance was only second to the fact that she had apparently been invited by the director for a one on one talk, she wanted to ask what it took to get that sort of meeting but judging by that response Coil might not have known.

Not being directly addressed CB’s eyes began to wander around the room, just catching onto the sudden shift in tone from a morning press conference to a sudden flurry of action from the news crew and the sudden straight backs of those who had been slumped in early morning fatigue. “What is..” Calvin Ball went to ask, only to be cut off by Samantha saying that there was a situation that had come up! Holy crap, was something interesting about to happen!? Without a moment of hesitation, the young cape began adjusting her gear, tightening her Junior Guard vest and positioning her shoulder pads so that they were both in the proper action ready position. Rocking on her heels she waited until Samatha had found her next target, an easily startled seeming man wearing a harness with his costume. A few words were shared and the group was on the move again.

As they gathered around the Director CB felt herself fall into attention, chin up, chest out, shoulders back, and stomach in. Though with her height she barely came up to most of the adult’s shoulders. Her gaze shifted quickly between Matthew and Dart so fast that even standing still she was making herself dizzy. A chance to prove themselves. Actual cape careers! This is it, I help with this and people are going to know I’m useful. We can’t screw this up. Already it was “we” in her head, easily slotting herself in as one of this new squad like she had done so many times before.

Coil nervously eyed her fellow capes. Most of them were rather small, with Calvin Ball being almost tiny. Their size and collective choices in uniform had suggested that this group was a bit young and green behind the ears.

“So. Briefings?” Coil was starting to get cranky. She didn’t like not knowing things, and the various guards had been ridiculously disappointing when it came to informing her of anything. By now she was left to hope that Dart knew more than her.

In contrast, Werelight couldn’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation. This might be it. Up to this point, Samekh and the Junior Guard had consistently failed to live up to his hopes, failed to give him the opportunity to be everything a hero was supposed to be. He’d struggled to help people in the months between his trigger event and his arrival on this Earth, as the challenges he’d faced as an independent cape far outstripped his own ability to handle them, but even with a team at his back now, Werelight had accomplished more good than in the Junior Guard. It was, to say the least, frustrating.

But now? Now, things were looking up. As Sandra had said, this was his chance to not only do something useful, but also to prove himself to his teammates and superiors. His power moved beneath his skin in response, millimeters from emerging yet fully under control, as it usually was when Werelight was anticipating a fight.

But he’d have to be careful. Messing up now might prove disastrous, both to his future career and to anyone endangered by the present threat. He’d have to watch his power extremely carefully, making sure it didn’t take any liberties with the instructions he gave it as it was so often prone to doing. Of course, there was always the possibility that Dart would turn out to be like the rest of the Guard—unwilling to give him a chance. If that did prove to be the case, though...maybe he’d be able to find a way to make a difference anyway.

While the Junior guard was moved over, Dart separated herself from the group somewhat. She put in her earpiece, and clicked the button on top with her nail. A small sound was made, and immediately someone began talking to her. "Dart, you're going to be in charge of the squad Bravo Four. All orders will be given under that callsign. You're going to have to choose a second in command for this mission, as long as you decide before arrival it doesn't matter when or how you decide." As that command finished, Coil asked her a question. She was still slightly annoyed from earlier, so she raised her pointer finger in the universal sign of "give me a second."

"The situation is as follows: At zero-six-three hundred hours a report was given by an agent working under the First Guard. A helicopter was dispatched, with Delta squad onboard to respond to the possible threat. At zero-six-fifty-eight hundred hours the pilot turned onto west fifth street and was stopped by a Shaker using metal wire. The First Guard soldiers that were already in the area shifted over to take down the Shaker, though communication has stopped when they were about fifty yards from her." The situation was spelled out with perfect enunciation by the voice in Dart's earpiece. It was almost calming. Almost.

"Alright squad listen up." Dart said, her voice pitched lower than normal to grab their attention. "We've got a Shaker who is manipulating what seems to be metal wire. The Shaker took a helicopter out of the air, so they’re a serious threat. Come with me,” her tone made it very much an order and not a suggestion, ”We're gonna try to get to the roof to be transported by helicopter. I should get more information on the way." As she finished, she took note of her own expression. Dart was almost scowling, but that didn't quite match her mood. She was feeling frustrated at the Director for his shitty patrol routes, and wanted to talk to him. This distraction was all too sudden, it hadn’t quite changed her mood.

Calvin Ball took a moment to flick on her own earbud when she saw Dart do it, listening intently to what she was saying while also doing her best to seem as professional as possible. Helicopter down, pilot hostage, public sight also seemed to be very on the situation. Nodding along she silently began to bargain with her power, body automatically falling in step behind Dart barely a foot behind her elbow as she did. “Alright, today is the day, we need good powers that are not going to get anyone blown up, killed, or cause massive destruction to everyone around us. Got it?” she mentally begged her power. Of course there was no response from the passenger, she had never heard of anyone getting a response if she were being honest with herself, but it was something to do as the sound of heavy boots made their way upward to the waiting helicopter. Then two things crossed her mind and she piped up.

“Do we know the range of the shaker? If we arrive in another helicopter they might just grab us out of the air like they nabbed the last one.”

She also wanted to ask what everyone did so that maybe they could form a sort of gameplan. Or at the very least they wouldn’t be stepping on one another’s toes. But she had already spoken out of turn, maybe it would be better to just ride out the reaction to that without sticking her hand further into possible danger. She hoped that there wasn’t going to be a very long silent treatment because as they approached the roof there was the thunderous sound of the helicopter rotors even from inside. There wasn’t going to be much talking once they were inside.

Dart took the steps two at a time, and listened to further intel. Again she was interrupted, this time by Calvin, but it was near the end of her briefing. ”Effective range is at least three hundred yards, or nine hundred feet. They used a lot of resources in getting the first helicopter out of the air, and we’re taking a black hawk. They won’t be able to take us out of the air.” Dart responded as they took the steps to the top floor. That range was honestly terrifying, but there had to be a catch right? What did that much range cost Spindle? Dart tried to turn it over in her head, that question. The other thing that was bothering her was how nonsensical the demand was. The First Guard wouldn’t just turn over its belly to be killed.

Dart’s description of the Shaker’s capabilities replaced a fair portion of Werelight’s enthusiasm with apprehension. A cape powerful enough to stop a helicopter in its tracks, with a range of over a quarter mile? Werelight had only encountered a handful of exceptionally strong capes before, and unless there was some aspect to her power that he was missing, this Shaker would easily count as one of them.

“What do you mean by resources?” Werelight asked Dart. “Does she have a limited amount of material to draw from?
“And by the way, are you familiar with how my powers work? I know I’ve met you before, briefly, but I don’t think we’ve worked together at all.”

"She’s controlling metal wires, but she hasn't generated any more yet. The villain has a lot of wires, but they are rather close to her, relatively speaking. I've seen your power, a month ago I think. All of you can give me a rundown on the helicopter. Also, everyone, put your communicator in and activate it ASAP." As Dart finished speaking they crested the top floor. Dart knew the Final Guard squad would be arriving soon, owing to 4Sight. She quickly pushed open the door, causing wind to rush in and spiral down the stairway. The Black Hawk had the illusion of barely touching the helipad, dust sweeping out and off the helipad and blanketing the air around them. It was a steely gray, with the insignia of the First Guard on the back half of the vehicle, currently covered by the door-which was already slid ajar.

There were seven seats visible from this side, small plastic things that seemed supremely uncomfortable. Two were facing them directly, with three facing towards the pilot's cabin at a 90 degree angle from the first two. Two more were flush against the wall of the pilot's cabin on either side of an entrance to the actual cabin, and an assumed two on the other side of the helicopter to remain symmetrical. There were two Leather straps laying near flush against their sides, with half circular metal buckles centered along the strap. Dart jogged quickly to the vehicle, taking the seat closest to the door against the pilot's cabin. As her squad members climbed into the helicopter she would hand out aviation headsets and instruct them on buckling themselves in. Once they were all in, the pilot immediately lifted off and Dart had one final instruction.

”Don’t fuck this up. We’re a team, and you follow my orders. I’d rather none of you die today.”

Through the whole meeting with Matthew, SWAT hid his disappointment at not being made squad leader. However, he knew his time would come. For now he would support 4Sight in whatever decisions he made. Whether they were wise or otherwise.

SWAT nodded at 4Sight and replied, "I understand." Then he took a quick inventory of his gear. He would need his weapons which were in his locker. Speed was of the essence. When dismissed Judah immediately embarked on claiming the rest of his items; Mp5, nonlethal rounds, lethal rounds, sidearm, communicator, and his combat knife.

This is what he had been waiting for. The reason he joined the Guard in the first place; to subdue those who would disturb this new world's peace. Earth Bet had been embroiled in the chaos of Gold Morning and was no more. Judah would live to keep that same chaos from ruling in Samekh.

Imperfect though it was, Serastol had a lot of good going for it. Not all parahumans were power-crazed maniacs. The public needed a good show of what Samekh heroes were capable of. If everything went as planned, the public would soon be lining up for their autographs. Having a man like Matthew in charge of PR was key, or so Judah surmised.

Who Ordered the Nazis?

Ana flinched as she heard Manifold snap her fingers. ”Ah wha-... Nazis in tanks?... Nazis in tanks!? Shit, let me go get Kendall! I don’t think she’d want to miss this!” Ana smash down the last of her beer and bolted out of the house bottle still in hand. When she got outside she looked out over the fields to see if Kendall was out there somewhere, not finding any signs of the girl Ana hurled her bottle at the barn.

”Kendall! We got Nazis in fucking tanks! Get your ass ready to go!” With that said Ana sprinted off into the shed and started fiddling with her keys. hmm what guns to bring… They got tanks so maybe Marta would be a good idea. Though I haven’t punched a tank in ages…

As if on cue, Kendall emerged from around the corner of the house and held their hands over their ears. ”Sheesh, you’re loud! I could hear you from the other side of the house!” They ran towards Ana with a smile after uncovering their ears, looking down at Roscoe while they moved. ”You gotta stay here, bud. This isn’t anything a good boy like you should be involved with.”

The dog, of course, tilted his head for a moment, leading Kendall to sigh and command him. ”Go watch the sheep!” With an affirmative nod, the dog turned around and went all the way back to the sheep pen, Kendall still running straight towards the shed where Ana was at.

”I’m sorry, by the way, but you said something about NAZIS IN TANKS?!” Kendall enthused, inquiring further from Ana. ”What kind of Nazis are we talking about?! White supremacists or like, actual frickin’ Nazis?”

Ana looked over her shoulder at Kendall and shrugged. ”All I know is that they’re nazis. Go ask L if you wanna know more.” Finally finding the right key Ana opened up the shed and went inside. ” Hey Kendall wanna try a gun!?” Ana asked as she browsed over her weaponry collection, pulling her 50 cal off the wall and smiling a little. ”God you’re beautiful.”

”I-I’m alright!” Kendall nervously answered as they pushed the offer away. ”I’d prefer to not kill, even if the victims are Nazis.” they said as they looked at all of Ana’s guns. Sheesh, you’d think that she’d never get half of these guns, but here they are in any case.

With a little moment of hesitation, Kendall looked to Ana to ask her a question. ”Do you think we’ll see Lillian and her girlfriend there, too?”

”All depends. If they are the ones who told L the nazis were coming then I’d assume so. Again you’ll have to go ask L.” Ana placed her sniper onto a bench and then went to remove her top. ”You can scoot now. Unless you want to watch me undress.”

”Y-yeah, I’m good. I’ll just chill outside for a second…” Without a second to lose, Kendall stepped outside to transform into their own personality, everything changing but their head and hair for the time being. The costume was made almost entirely out of their crimson brown colored tar, forming a tight bodysuit around their curves and everything. Features not immediately apparent if you compared the hero and the persona.

”Can I still get the voice?” They asked themself as they made a hushed tone, tuning their voice back into its standard sultry nature that accompanied the outlook of Mastar. ”There we go... gosh, it’s been a little while.”

They knocked on the door of the shed. ”Sheesh, c’mon slowpoke! Don’t make me come in there to help pretty you up~.”

There was a sharp snap from behind them as Manifold, in full gear, all but strutted towards them.

<<Hurry the fuck up. Lillian said she’s got something else to take care of, and my sensors picked up the movement of the tanks. Also, a broadcast on the damn Guard frequencies, looks like someone got one of their helicopters. Good on her, all I gotta say there.>> she signed quickly after she kicked open the door to the barn. <<We need to leave if we’re going to catch them before they get too close to the City.>>

Ana was just sticking on her helmet as Manifold kicked down the door. ”Fine jezz don’t blow a fuse.” Ana picked up her sniper and strapped the cannon onto her back before exiting the shed. ”So chatterbox which direction are the nazis coming from?”

<<Just drive the truck towards the city. Take that path through the fields and stay on the path, if you can. Rather not ruin the crop over some damn Nazis. We’ll intersect them by a minute or two and be able to set up.>>

”I’ll catch you all in the back seat.” Mastar’s hood flung out from her back and over her head as she quickly made her way towards the truck, entering her full-tar state to fly through it’s open window without shattering anything and reforming on the inside looking at the other two girls. ”Y’all comin? We’re wastin’ daylight, y’know!”

Ana turned to Manifold and nodded towards the driver seat. ”You drive. I might dip out of the car and try to take a few pot shots, soften them up before we engage head-on.” Ana then jumped into the passenger seat of the car and checked the safety on her sniper.

Manifold shrugged, slipping into the driver’s seat quickly, turning it on, and flooring it. Gravel and dirt sprayed behind the truck as they took off through the side entrance into the fields. Without even looking at the road, she pulled up a screen on her visor, tracking positioning and route based off of the information Lillian had given her.

With a heavy jostle the truck bounced over the edge of the field onto the dirt road and slid to a stop dead center.

<<We’re here. Three minutes. You’ll be able to hear them yourself before then.>> She grabbed the top of the truck, pulling herself up effortlessly as her other hand started to whirl audibly. Once she was standing on top it opened up to reveal what almost looked like a miniature cannon barrel. Placing her other hand on her shoulder, she crouched down and took aim for the bend five hundred meters down the road.

Ana nodded and hopped out of the car, flipping the safety off and folding out the bibod. Ana smirked and rested her sniper on the roof of the car. ”Mines bigger.” She said as she glanced at Manifold’s cannon arm.

”You cuties and your size contests. It’s quite adorable~.” Mastar snarked as she watched behind the two, quickly dipping into a pile of tar amongst the field the moment she heard tank treads. Right now, her target was to glob up any tank turrets she could, hopefully causing them to self destruct. Alas, she had another minute possibly, so she decided to just wait and see what would go down with the two gunners.

Manifold rolled her eyes, casually flipping off Ana as she motioned for her to take the first shot. Even without signing it was obvious what she was saying.

Mines bigger in action.

Ana simply smirked and looked through her scope, flipping up her helmets visor so she could aim properly.

FLASHBACK

&

A Lunch to Remember.

Kendall sat at the restaurant with their eyes traced on the small coffee mug in front of them, the mug having been filled with hot chocolate before half of it had been downed by them. They’d been waiting for about twenty minutes in this little cafe, dressed up in a proper sundress for once, looking out the window for the person they were meeting there. Kendall was a bit scared, honestly. This was the first time in a decently long while that they had really sat down to chat, and last time it had happened things seemed a lot more different. Less intense and definitely not in Serstol, that’s for sure.

Still, hopefully they wouldn’t take too much longer. Kendall wanted them to at least give her the small little gift they had bought a few days earlier. Even if they couldn’t stay, they at least wanted them to get the gift so they didn’t have to keep the thoughts in their head lingering much longer.

Lillian walked in slowly, her pink sneakers standing out against her white skirt and dark green hoodie. Her hair, tipped in a neon pink, stuck out from the hood that was up around her head. Her hands stuck in the hoodie pocket as she slipped into the booth across from Kendall, her eyes shining out from beneath the hood warily.

”Hey,” she said quietly as the waitress placed a water in front of her before Lillian waved her off. ”L said you wanted to meet in, ah, a calmer setting?”

”Y-Yeah. It’s been a while and all that since we’ve had a proper conversation, you know? You’ve flown under the radar and all that, so I wanted to make sure you were doing okay, not as you know who, but as Lillian.” Kendall awkwardly covered their scars as they looked at Lillian with an odd glance. ”Um… why the hood indoors? Is there… uh… something really big that keeps you from having to reveal your real face?”

Lillian glanced up at the hood in her vision before letting out a quiet laugh. ”Oh, this? Naw, it’s just kinda my aesthetic now. It’s kinda punk, and I like the way the colors bounce off each other this way.”

She sighed, looking out a nearby window at the traffic passing by. ”And yeah. I went under after everything that happened. It was too much for a kid and I just wanted to be with the person who made me happy. Took me a bit to do it, but I found her. Spent years together, me supporting her until all that mess happened and Alessa finally listened to me and left the Protectorate. Then….It’s been hard. Easier to just do what I can to help where I can than to face people as myself anymore.”

”I know how you feel, Lilly.” Kendall offered a reassuring smile before looking down at their cup and telling their story. ”Behemoth came and took all I had, then everything came back and wrought more havoc. I had a boyfriend and a family going into that day, then it all just… left.” Kendall unknowingly let it hang in the air for a moment before shaking their head. ”It’s a scar, but it’s going to heal, Lilly. Trust me.”

Kendall looked down at the little package beside them and contemplated for a moment, looking back up afterwards. Now wasn’t the time to give packages.

Lillian let out a dark chuckle at that. ”Yeah. I lost my parents and Ev went crazy and disappeared while Alessa was shipped off to fuck knew where. Such a disaster.”

She breathed out slowly against the window, lightly tracing a series of seemingly random symbols against the fog before it disappeared. Shaking her head, she leaned back and looked at the ceiling. ”But things are alright, honestly. I do a lot of scouting, gathering info. Point out attacks before they happen from those fucking Nazis that set up shop. Led an expedition into the mountains a few weeks ago. Bloody disaster. Some of the animals out there are scarier than I am, can you believe it? I roared at one and the fucker just roared back and charged.”

”It’s probably to assert dominance, though I’m also pretty sure you’re much scarier as a girl than a dinosaur when you’re mad, heh. You honestly scared me a lot back in Denver when things went south quick.” It wasn’t that hard to just be out with it, right? You could just say it and get it over with, since she’s probably going to reject you in any situation you try to put her in right now. Still, Kendall’s hand scratched against the surface of the booth they were sitting in as they danced back and forth on the idea of the confession.

Lillian smirked, flipping a switchblade out and back into her pocket in the blink of an eye, giving a wink as she twirled a strand of hair idly. ”Easier to be scary always than to just be scary in one or the other. Especially in this world. I don’t know what’s worse, the Fallen, the Nazis, or the bloody government. Bunch of posers.”

”Protectorate wasn’t much better, though. I only stayed to help train new Wards. If it wasn’t for them, I’d have jumped ship with you and the sisters.” They smiled softly at the memories of the young Wards they helped. ”Dude, those kids were awesome, but that’s besides the point… and what’re you gonna do? Stab me? That’s not gonna do much, y’know.”

”It’s more for the others. Never know who you might run into anymore, eh? Don’t always want to give up the game.”

”Thank gosh I don’t have to carry a knife around to defend myself with. I can psych ‘em out with some old face melting… shoot, did I ever show you that? It’s pretty dope.”

”Maybe not in public. Some of us, at least, still have identities to worry about.”

”True. I’ll have to show you next time we’re at work… or whenever you come to the farm next, if you even do.” Kendall looked down at the box beside them and lifted it up, placing it on the table and sliding it over to Lillian. In a very sarcastic tone, Kendall followed up with a ”Whoops,” before looking out the window, occasionally glancing over to look at Lillian.

Lillian looked at it quizzically before rolling her eyes and opening it.

Inside was a small music box. A bit of an antique one, in a little bit of a beaten up shape, but still perfectly functionable and still very sturdy.

”Uhm. Thanks?”

”... sorry that you don’t like it. There’s not… uh… much in the ways of gifts around here that I’d thought you’d like. I-I figured maybe you’d just like something to help ease things off sometimes, even if that’s not exactly what you might be expecting.” Kendall put their head down in a movement that could only be described as a ‘flomp’. There went any hopes they had of this working out.

”I just don’t understand.”

”W-what don’t you understand? It’s just a gift I wanted you to have.”

”Why?”

Kendall finally sighed. ”... i-it’s because I like you.”

”Well, yeah, we’ve been friends for ages.”

”No… not like that.”

”....Oh.”

”I have since before that charity event. I never wanted to screw with what you and Alessa had going on, so I never found the courage to tell you. I’m not saying this because… uh… she’s gone; I’m saying it to get it off my chest.” Kendall’s cheeks were redder than a cherry at this point as they kept talking. ”... I-I’m not her, though, and I don’t know if I can help fill that hole in your heart where she was.”

Lillian turned to look out the window again, several minutes passing before she responded in any way. With a single finger she pushed the box back towards Kendall, a guilty look on her face.

”I, uh, I’m actually seeing someone right now. She helped me get back on me feet and things kinda just happened. I’m sorry, Kendall. I didn’t realize you felt that way, and I’m sorry that I can’t give you the feelings you deserve.” She paused for a moment before continuing. ”I hope that, ah, this won’t hurt our friendship. I get it if it does, though.”

”...” Kendall stayed silent at first, unwilling to speak. They definitely had been slammed by the rejection, but they took a moment to breathe before they recollected themself. ”I… It’s gonna be okay… if you’re happy, then you’re happy, and honestly, that’s good for me.” Kendall answered with a soft smile, definitely hiding back their negativity as usual. ”Though, you better take that box. A gift is a gift, regardless of intent.”

"Yeah, sure. I just didn't want to take it if it meant….y'know? Claire means a lot to me. Maybe we can all get together for lunch out at the farm?"

”I’d like that.” Kendall said softly. ”Though, not sure if L would actually care to join us or not. You know her.”

"Yeah. I only really see her for work anymore. She at least responds to texts."

”... shit, what time is it?” Kendall swore as they checked their watch. ”... crap, Ana’s gonna kill me. I’ve gotta help her try and get L outside today, and I’m gonna be late unless I go.”

Lillian smiled lightly, waving a hand casually towards the door. "Go, she could use it. Hit me up about lunch."

”Don’t worry, I will!” Kendall smiled as they rushed out of the store, running down the block a fair ways. Then they began to slow down, ever more and more, until they slunk into an alleyway and began to lean against its wall, looking at the ground before the same black tar that they were made of began to come out in overwhelming amounts.

”S-she did that… she made us hurt again…”

More tar began to slog out of Kendall’s mouth, rocketing against the ground and splashing all over as they tried to hold it back, their efforts proving futile with more and more tar coming out every second.

”Things weren’t supposed to go this way. Things were going to be different…”

They couldn’t control it. For the longest time, Kendall had come to terms with their powers and cape persona, but sometimes they just couldn’t keep the tar from staying all back.

”W-why must she make us hurt?!”

Kendall sat against the wall, knowing good and well their dress was ruined, but still uncaring as they did so. Walking through town at this point was a no-go, unless they wanted to risk running into any anti-cape advocates on a bad day. That, and they certainly didn’t want to attract attention to Mastar’s true grand appearance in Serstol.

With a moment of hesitation, Kendall pulled their phone out and shot at text to Ana.

<<having an incident, need you to come grab me.>>

Immediately after, they lurched forward again, and continued to spew behind the dumpster they were next to.

The Great Heist

A City Awakens

As Ragtag escaped, the Guard stared at the graffiti on the building with an almost sad look upon his face.

“Kids these days…”

Several blocks away, Ragtag was still dashing through alleys and shortcuts towards the portal hub...

Final Guard and Junior Guard

The Shaker

Wire shifted and churned, dragging the pilot out of the helicopter and dangling him over the city. A deadman's switch, to ensure her livelihood. It was a stopgap, crude and barbaric. Slowly, and carefully she weaved wires under the man's clothes into a harness. The command issued, she turned her attention to the crowd below. Cars had started to clear out from the street beneath, more parking or leaving than transiting. People stared up in awe and confusion, some even videotaping her. That actually made her smile, the plan coming together in this stage at least. The smile faded when she felt some of her wire move without her consent. Quickly she turned around on the tightrope, walking to one side to lean over. Some First Guard soldiers were being dragged out of the entrance of a nearby building, with wire pinning their arms to their body. Coiled around their guns was more wire, in opportune spots to disable the ability to fire if wielded. Rats rooted out of their nest, tsk tsk tsk. Again she raised the megaphone, speaking with a newfound enthusiasm.

"I have five hostages now. If you try to sneak up on me again, I'll start taking people hostage from the nearby office buildings."

Sighing, she moved back to the center of her tightrope. More work began as Spindle focused on the jungle of wire suspending the helicopter. There was a lot of wire that wasn't helping to keep the helicopter airborne, and she slowly unwrapped that wire. It took all of her focus to tie it to the wire she was balancing on, eyes glazing over slightly with the effort of controlling a hundred wires at once.

Out of the corner of his eye, 4Sight could see Presidio preparing forcefields and a twinge of jealousy emerged. He didn't know how good she was at using her power yet, but if 4Sight had it, he could do wonderful things. She asked about briefing, and 4Sight decided to answer the newbie. "I'll brief you enroute and now." SWAT had hurried off to grab equipment, obviously not being fully prepared for the mission at a moment's notice. Slingshot was finally waking up, dragged into the waking world by an emergency that demanded his full attention. Dart was separating herself from the groups to listen in on her comm.

Matthew was separating himself too, but it wasn't physical. He was taking everything in, and while 4Sight could understand space and distance in moments, Matthew could read people. Genuinely, he would understand someone's wants within a few words. Reading their goals, reading their hopes. He had done it in promising the Junior Guard. Matthew had promised them a career as a cape, a dream for their generation. The next generation's dream would be decided by what they did today, and in the coming weeks. It was easy to imagine, gaining powers being a blackmark, a plague. The baby tossed over the spartan cliffs, but for being too strong this time. That was how Matthew had convinced 4Sight to join, he who was tired of war, tired of fighting, and tired of death. Matthew had promised that they could prevent that future from coming to pass.

4Sight switched on his communicator, and placed it into his ear. A small confirmation noise sounded, signalling the connection to their network. "Alpha four leader, 4Sight. Your second in command for this mission is SWAT. At zero-six-three hundred hours a report was given by an agent working under the First Guard. A Little Bird was dispatched, with Delta squad onboard to respond to the possible threat. At zero-six-five-eight hours the pilot turned onto west fifth street after dropping off his soldiers. The helicopter was stopped in mid air by a high threat shaker, calling herself Spindle. The First Guard soldiers that were already in the area shifted over to take down the Shaker, and they are now hostages as well. Spindle's range is at least three hundred yards, though she has a limited amount of wire." Nodding along, 4Sight looked over his team as he listened. Their communicators wouldn't be playing this, instead they would get radio silence until he briefed them.

Reaching up, he pressed the button on the flat of the communicator to switch to speaking mode, hoping SWAT would have his earpiece in. "A shaker calling herself Spindle captured a First Guard Little Bird, and is suspending it with metal wire. She has a limited amount of wire, but her range is at least three hundred yards. Spindle has multiple hostages, so we've got to hurry to make sure there's no casualties. Everybody put a hand on me, we've got to leave ASAP. I can move us there if you do." 4Sight would finish speaking around the time SWAT arrived again. Slingshot approached first, placing a hand on 4Sight's shoulder. 4Sight wasn't actually watching his team, having closed his eyes, his body becoming slightly translucent.

He could see the helicopter pad, could even hear Dart opening the door. She was rushing to get into the Black Bird, her squad close in tow. There was never a visible indicator that he was watching. After all his squad member placed hands on him, he would open his eyes and they would all appear on the helipad. It seemed to knock the wind out of 4Sight momentarily, as he leaned over and tried to catch his breath. When he had recovered, he would yell over the helicopter blades. "Get in, I'll show you how to strap yourself in. Put on the hearing protection on your seat, and we can leave."

The Fallen

The Hunt

As Edith darted away from the twisting, breaking wreckage of the helicopter, five trucks roared into the streets of Serstol proper. The few civilians around looked up in confusion before they took cover. Multiple vehicles full of people, most of them with guns and several wearing what was clearly cape outfits?

Right after that noise across town?

Even a fool knew trouble when they saw it.

"There's some kinda thing going on downtown, Guard mobilizing for that. Jackie says she saw someone matching the description of our missing person running away from it, so we're gonna come in from multiple angles. Comms on, I'm going to go scout," Transcendent called over from the center of the group as they slowed to a crawl.

As the rest of the Fallen nodded and were otherwise in quiet agreement, the five vehicles split up slowly, taking side roads and alleys as they slowly diverged. Before they all separated, however, they could see Transcendent stand up, jump into the air, and shift into their breaker state. An alien form that seemed to have tongues trailing after it covered in mouths, they landed on the pavement behind the first vehicle and leapt forward, far higher than they had any right to be able to reach, before they started bouncing off of buildings as if they were made of air. Within moments they were out of sight, heading straight towards the last known location of their target.

Across town, a young woman approached Edith slowly.

“Miss? Are you okay? Is someone after you?” she asked slowly, concern coloring her voice.

Red Eye

The Bank

"The. Bag." Percy enunciated carefully, the anger of dealing with an incompetent filling his voice. With hand still raised, Vanish approached the guard who had fired, and put her foot on his pistol. He wasn't reaching for it, too preoccupied by the glass embedded in his stomach. Crouching down, she wrapped her hand around the grip, the sensation surprising her in its implications. More than anything, it made Vanish uncomfortable. A flex of her power, and she raised herself off the ground with empty hands. Percy was watching the teller carefully, not concerned with the dwindling crowd or the other guard who was similarly incapacitated. That guard didn't have a gun, though he did have plenty to say about his injured leg. Mostly expletives.

"Heads up." Percy called out right before the door began opening again. He was looking at it now, frowning deeply. Something to do with his power? Vanish turned, finding a colossal crocodile man to meet her gaze. He spoke, voice sounding slightly inhuman to her ears. Cliche? She thought, biting her tongue.

Vanish wanted to respond, but she knew if she did, she'd talk over Percy. To his credit, Percy said something a bit more clever than she would have. "You're one to talk, Creature from the Black Lagoon." He said, eyes back on the teller who was filling a plastic bag. Vanish spoke next, giving it a moment.

"We have at least two hostages. If you move closer, we'll have one hostage." She said, keeping her eyes on the 'man' with hand raised towards the guard bleeding from his stomach. After a thought, she raised her hand and fired a brick at an empty part of the room, letting it shatter against a wall. Vanish renewed the threat with one hand pointed toward the guard.

Exiled

Not with a Bang...

Right on time the slow rumble that the trio could hear became louder and louder until two tanks rounded the corner. They appeared nearly identical to old models, if one was familiar with them, but given the Tinker who built them...It would be unwise to assume they were anything close to ordinary.

Manifold smirked at the sight, he arm beginning to glow slightly before both tanks fired. Immediately her arm discharged twice, and two explosions erupted between the two sides. Seconds later the explosions seemed to go in reverse by something ...dark, tinted with an orange color. Barely a second later and the phenomenon was gone, and the tanks slowly advanced ever onward towards the trio.

In the distance, they could hear a louder rumbling coming closer, the sound so deep it was making the windows of the truck rattle even from this distance.

Edith

Edith flinched a little when she heard someone walking towards her, quickly looking up Edith saw that the someone was a concerned looking young woman. Aside from showing concern, the woman didn't look extraordinary, although the wording of the woman's question did make Edith a little suspicious. Ok Edith, deep breaths... Edith tried to relax her posture but the possibility of this woman was actually a member of the fallen ensure that Edith remained a little stiff. Edith needed to continue moving, standing around like a headless chook was just going to get her caught. Though Edith needed to deal with this person first. "N-no, there was a crash. A h-helicopter! I'm just getting as far from that a-as possible, I want no part in things like that. That's the Guards business."

Edith shifted slightly looking over her shoulder back in the direction of the crash. She looked for a few seconds before turning back to the young woman. "I'll not hold you up any longer." Edith said before awkwardly trying to walk around the young woman and head off down the street.

The woman smiled warmly, stepping sideways to stay in front of Edith. "Now, dear, you look like you need a good meal at the least. I won't invite you home, so don't think that's on the table, but there's a nice little food stand just around the corner that I'd be happy to buy you something from."

Edith gnashed her teeth, what was with all these nosy people today? "I-..." Edith went to speak before taking a moment to think. She had no reason to trust this stranger, but if Edith played it smart she could possibly use this woman as a cover. The fallen would be looking for Edith on her own right?... But again, there was still no reason to trust this stranger. "I'm really not worth your time."

"Nonsense. I have nothing but time anymore since...Well, since the world ended," the woman said a little sadly.

Persistent... "I assure you, this will just be a waste of your time."

"I disagree. No one gets to decide what wastes my time but me."

This wasn't working, this woman just wouldn't back down. "Fine. If you insist." The sooner that Edith appeased this woman's irritating need to supply food, the sooner Edith could get back on the move. And at the very least Edith would be able to test if this two-person cover thing would help her blend in a little more. Or find out that this woman was a fallen spy...

Lantern Jack

___
_|__|_
)(A...A)(

While all this was going down, Lantern Jack was sitting on a bench, sipping coffee from a Thermos flask and reading a newspaper. Lots of boring local news, generally alarmist nonsense complaining about the various ways different Parahuman groups made everything worse. If the newspaper wouldn't have been rather left-leaning, it would've probably also complained about the influx of interdimensional immigrants.

Lantern Jack paused his reading after finishing the local part, quickly letting his eyes dart all over the street. A teenager was running away from him, but other than that, none of the random citizens seemed to care.

Jack skipped the international news, going straight for interdimensional ones. Gimels currency was rising in value. The newspaper credited their myriad of Thinkers, drawing attention to 'The monstrous mass murderer Harbinger', 'The dangerous Warlord Tattletale' and 'The Serial Kidnapper known as the Bogeyman'. Jack was rather certain that Harbinger had died decades ago.
A Bet-based Monster cape was taking credit for snuffing out some gang who had gone by 'the Roadcrashes' and gotten flak due to impacting supply lines and endangering traveling refugees. The paper painted this as vigilante justice.
A few pieces about corner worlds, most of them being stuff he had picked up on months before by looking over his sister's shoulder. Dalet was reporting troubles with broken troubles. Shin was being Shin. Zayin was still lost.

"Interessant," he muttered. More to the benefit of a potentially unseen audience than anything.

He folded the paper and took another sip of coffee.

Still one and a half hours until that job...

Jack tucked the paper beneath his arm, turned into an orb and groggily drifted away. An impressive speed of 5 meters per second. He was headed towards the Memorial, where his client would be waiting.

Presidio
Activating her communicator as she saw 4Sight doing so, Kari awaited his debriefing with bated breath. Her forcefields continued to be generated low to the ground, shifting into complex mechanisms which began to float into place, building from her feet upwards, forming the beginnings of what might be armor. Kari’s attention split as 4Sight’s voice came through her comms, her expression going serious as their team leader mentioned the hostages. That was going to make this whole situation incredibly difficult. Nonetheless she took in a deep breath and squared her shoulders, a determined look coming onto her features. With a thought the forcefields worked into her crenellated tiara and the rest of her facial mask slid into place, giving her visage a faint blue tint. Similarly the growing construction of her armor--something she had practiced before and was always building on--had crept all the way up to her hips, where it slowed. Her entire lower body was covered in a complex array of interlocking translucent forcefields, which shifted soundlessly with each microadjustment of her posture. She barely felt them, in fact her awareness of them came more through her power than through their contact with her person.

Very slowly she began locking in most of the forcefields, particularly those on the outer two layers. As she did so, 4Sight bid them to make contact so he could transport them. Nodding she took a step closer and put her arm out, making sure that all her forcefields were physically in contact with her body, before she laid her hand on his arm. Anxiety had become excitement and it lifted her lips in a faint smile even as their surroundings changed in an instant. Her eyes widened and a small surprised laugh fell from her lips.

Her gaze fell on 4Sight’s face and she patted him on the arm while he recovered, disengaging. Still she found herself flinching against the noise of the helicopter. Orienting herself she took a few shaky steps and then took a breath, changing gears and then approaching the helicopter. Forcefields had begun forming again as she walked, narrow almost flat sheets draping themselves over the trailing cloth of her costume. More formed, latching into aspects of the thin pieces, which all played back into the forcefield armor that was creeping slowly up her lower abdomen. She made sure to keep breathing, ensuring enough room for her to do so once the shields locked into place. While everyone else’s clothes were whipped uncontrollably backwards by the harsh winds created by the helicopter, Presidio’s clothes seemed subdued in their movement, flowing in a disconnected way back from her person.

‘At this rate I’ll have time for more than just the armor before we arrive,‘ she noted internally as, covering her ears, she entered the helicopter and donned the protective gear, strapping herself into one of the seats loosely at first. She picked one facing towards the outer wall and at a corner with another seat to her right, that one packed between the wall behind them and on to its right as well. This gave her some room to generate and arrange her forcefields while they headed into the field.

She made sure to keep her forcefields close to her person or at the ceiling of the helicopter, making sure they stayed out of everyone’s way. She closed her eyes, contemplating how to deal with the threat without significantly endangering the hostages. First, she’d need to know the position of everything, after that...well, she’d need time. A thought struck her and she spoke into comms, asking a question “I’ve worked with 4Sight before, but what about the others. Shouldn’t we confer regarding our powers. It might help us deal with the situation if we can work together efficiently.”

She kept her eyes closed, hoping that everyone would collaborate without issue. She didn’t expect them to be an effective team right off, but if they knew eachother’s capabilities it would be a step in the right direction...she hoped.
Exactly
It had been a normal day, he’d gone to the bank to get a bit of money out for the week, and then things had just had to go completely wrong. His heart beating only a tad faster than normal, Kelly got down on his hands and knees and covered his head. Or, well, that was partially true. Technically, three of him got to their hands and knees, though only one was apparent. You see, the villains had gotten one thing wrong. They’d carelessly swept their gazes across the crowd, over and past him, more than once since their somewhat dramatic entrance. He kept the two images overlapped with his person for long enough for another cape to make an appearance. He glanced to the side, still on the ground, and looked them over. A smile lit his eyes and stretched his mouth wide. With the entrance of the crocodile man, he now had four duplicates. The one he walked around with all the time, the one generated by the two bank robbers, and another for the man. Fantastic.

He rose to his feet, but only one of the duplicates followed the motion, while another kept an eye on things from ground level. The one that had risen up was only visible to Basilisk and it raised a single finger to its lips, implying the man not mention anything. The invisible image approached a central point, putting itself roughly equidistant from both the villains. Then, it just stood there, totally motionless. Eventually it would become visible to them, but it would take some time.

He had plenty of time.

Glancing around he found his smile growing. Changing tact, he walked straight up behind one of the two villains (Vanish) and bent down. Gently he wrapped his fingers around the guard’s baton and then unclasped it and drew it out. The item was out of sight and as he drew it his power draped itself around and through the item, rendering it just as impossible to perceive as he was. Three duplicates had basically rendered him non-existent. Rising to his feet, baton in hand he regarded the back of the woman’s head. He considered bashing the baton across her temple and almost laughed as a result, barely stifling it. If he made too much noise they’d perceive him and that would quite swiftly put any hostages in danger.

While the man behind the counter addressed the monstrous cape, Kelly made his way to one of the other civilians that had stayed. No one was paying them any mind, but that was perfect. Kneeling down in front of them he tapped them on the shoulder. Immediately he felt his power open up and he used it, creating a fourth duplicate. Quietly, he spoke to the man through the duplicate and instructed him to remove his jacket and scarf. He did, very slowly all the while with Kelly making contact with both making them harder to notice. It took several seconds, but when done Kelly took the pieces of clothing from the man and bid him to stay there.

Donning the black jacket and wrapped the scarf around his neck and lower face he made himself a makeshift mask, with the hood of the jacket pulled up over his head, hiding his hair as well. Jogging over to the other guard--who could not see or hear him in the least, just like everyone else in the room--Exactly drew the man’s baton with his other hand and then strode away, the man not noticing in the least. Now equipped with two batons and a hidden identity he debated on who to target.

His grin became a smirk and then he commanded the duplicate that only the monster man could perceive “They can’t hear or see me. I’m going to distract the little lady. You should take the man. We can switch if it’s a bad match-up. Nod if you understand.” The duplicate shrugged.

Kelly, yet undetected, approached Vanish.

A loud rasping sound, repetitive and lacking the mirth a normal man’s laughter might have carried, began to fill the room. The couple of bank robbers seemed to have mistaken him for one of the heroes, someone who would hesitate in the presence of hostages. Movements casual Basilisk extended his tail back towards the door, pulling it open with the appendage then reaching back to grasp it with one hand. “I don’t think you’re understanding me. What you rookies have is two meat shields that have given me a hard time and harassed me every time I’ve walked into this bank. And each one of them that is killed, well the heroes won’t mind if I just go that much harder on you.” His grip on the door tightened to the point where the glass cracked and he began to pull. The hinges creaked in protest as the metal was slowly torn free of the frame, leaving the reptilian man holding a twisted piece of the brass door.

He could feel the bits of glass and the places where broken metal had stabbed into his palm left him dripping blood onto the floor around his feet, the droplets hitting the ground and instantly beginning to smoke and hiss. His thin lips curled back into a shard filled grin and he pointed the makeshift weapon at the man who had spoken. “So tough guy, what’s the plan now? More hollow threats? Or maybe you are going to show you have a brain cell rattling around in there and realize you need to give up before I crack your skull like an egg shell.” His attention on Percy and Vanish and not much else. Especially on a person who specialized in not being seen.

Vanish stayed very still at the threat, tilting her head, and firing another brick at the guard. It crumbled on impact with the ground in front of him, small pieces of the shattered stone ricocheting and cutting across the prone man’s face, eliciting a painful gasp. As she turned back to Basilisk she took a small step backwards.

That step back told Basilisk all he needed to know about this girl, she wasn’t committed enough to take that life. Laughing again the massive mutant rushed forward, feet pushing against the tile hard enough that tile cracked and his claws were needed to give him balance. Legs to long for a human and much stronger than they had any right to being thrust him forward and launched him into a vicious assault that had the door leading in wide swing that had him pulling it from left to right, intentionally passing over Vanish’s head so that he could hide the momentum of his real attack. The massive bullwhip of a tail swinging around with his hips, aimed to catch the young villain square in the diaphragm. Hopefully he had measured out his strength enough that he would only knock the wind out of her and not her lunch.

Calvin Ball was a bundle of excited nerves as she climbed up into the helicopter, taking the center seat and the helmet that was handed to her. The roar of the rotor blades above her making her bones rattle as she worked to adjust her mask and get the helmet on. It felt loose on her head but a few pulls on the straps got it in place enough that she could get the noise canceling headphones in place and flick on the communicator.

"This is a new shaker threat, so we're flying in blind. We need to stay mobile, and assume cover isn't as reliable as it seems. First plan of attack is going to be to talk the villain down, if you see a guaranteed opportunity to neutralize her without threatening the hostages, take it. Don't act without informing your other teammates. If you wanna communicate with the other squad, go through me unless it's an emergency. If it is an emergency, yell at them, or activate the button on the side of your communicator."

Talk her down or neutralize the threat, well maybe she could do one of those two things. There was a bubbling feeling in her fingertips as her power pushed to be used, reminding her of fizzy soda as she debated forming one of her balls. Quietly she murmured under her voice, the microphone on her helmet off as she made a request of her passenger. “Okay, we need something that can knock someone out, small range and powerful. I know we’ve never actually made something like that but it could be really cool if you could help me make a good impression with these guys.”

There was a moment where Calvin Ball could only hear the dull thud of the helicopter and the chatter of the other’s voices over the headset. Not a single hint of an answer from the passenger behind the tingling sensation, no change, and no sudden inspiration. Taking a deep breath she put her hands together and held them there, waiting until there was a target to try and form the first sphere. Hopefully it would be a good one.

SWAT traveled with 4Sight placing his hand on his shoulder until they were next to the helicopter. He got on without an issue, having been in multiple "choppers" in the past. SWAT checked and rechecked his weapons. Clearing the chambers, and adjusting his tinker tech eye. It would be very useful at spotting exactly what the kidnapper was doing. As well as recording the scene for future analysis.

Judah had extensive experience in the field of hostage negotiation. If he could communicate with the kidnapper, then he was confident he could strike a deal. Getting everyone out alive. No casualties. He thought. If he could get within range of using his powers, then it would be that much easier to have things go smoothly.

Teamwork was of the essence. Learning that the parahuman was a shaker with a range of at least 300 yards made that fact doubly so. SWAT couldn't simply get in close to use his emotional manipulation. He would get skewered before then. He glanced at the cape Presidio as she asked a question through the comms. They didn't have an extensive experience together, but they could sart to get to know one another's abilities. He then asked over the whir of heli-blades in their communicator, "Can you stop the parahuman's thread with your force fields? You're defense could prove invaluable for getting within range." If she could guarantee his safety, SWAT could get in close enough to start manipulating Spindle with his powers.

"Five now." Aesthetic repeated what she heard from Spindle up in the sky. This wasn't a situation that Aesthetic could help out with. Her powers weren't good for hostage situations like this, but then again, who had a good power for this situation? She wasn't exactly sure, outside of possibly someone with Master Qualities... or maybe someone with a similar powerset to Myrddin. There could be multiple ways this would work out, but for the time being, she was still going to stand there and watch.

Five lives are on the line, and no doubt more will be on the way soon, too.

Goddammit, where was the Final Guard? For a moment, Aesthetic thought that this was the reason for everyone hating capes. There were the villains that took people hostage, or rather in this case a radical that wanted a potentially good thing to be destroyed, and there were the heroes that never seemed to show up on time. Of course, the situation was more complicated than that, and she just kinda hated it. She hoped that her blog focusing on pro-cape politics was going to help things out. It wouldn't do much, but it'd at least help get the word out.

Regardless of anything, Aesthetic looked up to a larger building and raised her eyebrow. "I could probably get a bit better of a vantage point..." She stepped back a little bit, looking at the taller building in front of her, before she ran towards it. Near the end of the building, her legs extended out as she rose into the air, jumping up high before clinging onto the building, waiting for her legs to come back up to their normal size.

"Nice... now to climb." Her arms stretched out, reaching up to grab a ledge as she pulled herself higher, right up to the roof of the building. Once finally up, she stepped towards the main street that laid before the situation. She could see a lot more than the other building, though that certainly meant that Spindle could probably see Aesthetic now. Though, before she could react, Aesthetic raised her hands to a visible "not engaging" pose. She wasn't about to have a sixth life find its way onto the line.

It was starting to get down to the wire--where were the Guard capes?!

After following Dart, Werelight climbed into the helicopter, his thoughts overlaid with a mixture of worry and anticipation. This was his chance to accomplish something, to really start his career as a hero. He wasn't sure how useful his power would be in this situation, but a large part of him was hoping he'd get a chance to use his Master power to resolve the hostage situation. That would be risky, though. He'd have to be careful--and his power would have to listen to him.

Werelight took a moment to prod at his power experimentally. It was active, but not attempting to force its way out of him. That was a good sign.

Nearby, one of the other Junior Guard members, Calvin Ball, was mouthing something he couldn't make out. A prayer? He contemplated asking her for a couple of seconds, but decided against it--anything he said would be broadcast to everyone else in the helicopter, and if she wanted to keep quiet about it, that was fine with him.

As Audrie got closer, the mechanical banging and shouting got louder. Hostages huh? So she catches people: be on the lookout for traps. While two could normally play that game, one of us is fresh out of traps at the moment; fortunately she blew the element of surprise, but who knows what else she's doing. Audrie redoubled her usual habit of always lowering her gaze to the ground directly in front of her footfalls.

As much as the hallways, doors, and furniture in buildings could be booby-trapped in oh so many ways, shit flows down river and some high ground would be really useful. Having gotten what sounded like pretty close, Audrie stopped and glanced around, fishing through the center pocket of her hoodie for a crumpled-up flu mask she had dyed black, until she found a compromise in the form of the fire escape on one of those mixed buildings that had shops on the ground floor and apartments above, and put on her "backup costume". She climbed not all that carefully, awkwardly jimmying the ladder down and squeezing through in places, with more concern for checking the next flight of stairs and the buildings facing her than the hollow noises her power was dampening.

With a hop, Audrie ascended to the roof and finally caught sight of it: silvery cables like cobwebs or modern art, holding aloft a helicopter with its rotors shorn off like the wings picked off a fly, and six people. Only one of them didn't look supremely uncomfortable. Primary target acquired.

Audrie crouched down by the lip of the roof and took stock of her options. Spot's a good vantage point and is harder to sabotage. Getting up through choke points took time, so will any getting down or enemy assault; worse case scenario: just jump. King of the hill still applies. Could search and clear roof of traps, but risks setting them off and losing track of rest of battlefield. She looked around for other capes, and saw that biblical-looking one from earlier on the street below and a flickering pastel statue on another rooftop. Like moths to a flame.

All three capes looked like they were waiting for someone else to make the first move, which was fine by Audrie. Probably waiting for the heroes to show up. Her goal was simply information: see who the major players were, how they acted and interacted, maybe what their powers did --again, too bad she didn't have a scanner on her at the moment. If someone saw through her powered disguise, she'd try to convince them she was harmless or on their side, and then GTFO at the earliest opportunity.

Audrey settled in to watch the show. I wonder if the Final Guard are dumb enough to try another helicopter?

Ana remained scoped, not flinching from the tanks shots, she was too focused on deciding where to shoot. In the end she opted to punch a hole a little to the left of the main cannon. "Cover your ears girls!"

Ana squinted making sure her aim was precise before mumbling to herself. "Pew." The power behind Ana's shot shook the top of the car, and the sound would have probably blown out her ears if she didn't have her helmet on. Ana stayed looking through her scope just so she could see what kind of damage her shot would do. Sure her gun was strong, but tanks are well. Tanks. And from the looks of the firepower on these things, Ana didn't think these were your run of the mill tanks.

"Oh cr-" Mastar immediately went down into their full-tar form to suppress the crack of the rifle from blowing out their eardrums, though they certainly didn't stay put for very long as they started to move to their own location. These might've been some massive tanks, but Mastar wasn't necessarily completely out of any practical use here. Well... okay, maybe they were, but impracticality had a few paragraphs for Mastar.

The tarry mass moved through the grass fluidly, hardly disturbing it if at all. Their goal? Move as close as possible to the tanks, then wait for an ample moment to jump on. Of course, Mastar had to hope it wasn't about to turn and fire a bolt right into them if they were somehow detected, but they were confident. They certainly felt fast enough to keep the cannons aiming for a little bit.

Maybe long enough for Arson to shoot the barrels off and cripple the tanks...? That's not a terrible idea. Maybe Mastar will remember to tell it to Arson when they change forms.

Final Guard and Junior Guard

The small moment of comfort Presido offered meant a lot to 4Sight, and he smiled in appreciation. They boarded the helicopter as a group, and transit began. The sensation was always alien, acceleration seeming to come from nowhere lifting them into the sky. Slingshot had a white knuckle grip on his straps to match his paling face. Not used to flying then. 4Sight kicked his foot lightly, offering a sympathetic tight-lipped expression. The boy nodded, seeming equal parts comforted by the expression and uncomfortable with the environment. Presido spoke, asking about the squads powers. 4Sight took the initiative in answering the actual question for the currently muted Slingshot. "Slingshot can throw himself forward in a manner similar to Dart, but it's by changing his gravity. He can also do it to others if they're in range." He said, before glancing over to his right at Dart. The pilots announced to everyone that they'd be landing soon, and 4Sight took that in stride. SWAT asked about getting Presido's assistance in the upcoming fight, and 4Sight noted that mentally. Some sharp maneuvers brought Slingshot further to losing his sparse breakfast, the turbulence picking up as they started to lower into the actual city amongst the skyscrapers. 4Sight assumed it was coming from the wind the helicopter was pushing down reflecting off of the buildings, but he didn't know for sure.

They quickly landed, and the pilot announced over the comms that they were half a block away from Spindle, before giving them the go ahead to unstrap and evacuate the vehicle. 4Sight let Slingshot go ahead of him, following close behind him. The area they landed was an intersection, yellow tape surrounding it, with the 'normal' police redirecting traffic nearby. As they climbed out, an officer jogged over. He didn't try speaking over the helicopter, which was already beginning to take off again. Instead he just pointed down the street. The sight was a strange one, dark shadows interlacing around a small helicopter. 4Sight couldn't make out a person, or even the thicker wire intel had suggested she was sitting on. That couldn't last. 4Sight yelled over the helicopter blades. "I'll direct you guys as best I can, Slingshot will help me move towards the battlefield while I do recon." His voice was gritty, and straining at the volume.

4Sight had a strange relationship with his power. Most people had their powers for a year or two before they passed, the lucky ones gettings a decade. 4Sight had gotten two decades of normal time, but his power didn't actually get explained by that amount of usage. 4Sight closed his eyes, focusing on a point right above the helicopter. Slowly his eyes opened, taking in the scene, metal wire surrounding him. His physical body hadn't moved, and it took great effort to move said body while using his power. It became harder when he used the tertiary part of his power. 4Sight could see the woman now, walking a tightrope of wire. Her dress was being whipped by the wind, eyes squinted almost closed. She was crossing the wire to see better who had arrived via the helicopter. The wind slowed to a zephyr, and her eyes opened fully. Legitimate joy colored her expression, a grin with eyes wide. She seemed to be searching those present, watching the arrivals as if she were looking for someone in particular. After a bit of watching, she seemed not to have found who she was looking for. Seeming disappointed but not surprised, she made a hand motion and some wire fell to the street below her.

Seconds started to drag longer as 4Sight focused, drag and drag until every second for him became two. The wire was tumbling in mid air, and uncontrolled descent that was slowing for 4Sight alone. Then every second for him was four. It kept going until it took minutes for a second to pass, the wire almost frozen in mid air. Then 5 minutes, the wire now shifting almost imperceptibly. It took thirty seconds for 4Sight's power to slow his perception down to 1/100th the speed. That was more than slow enough, time to consider the situation. The battlefield was open, but that wasn't actually a good thing in all reality. The more Spindle could see, the more control she could exert over the battlefield. The street was around fifty feet wide, a commercial area like this demanding accomodations for the heavy traffic.

4Sight glanced down at the helicopter pilot, about ten feet from where 4Sight had placed his third eye. They were wrapped in wire, face warped in fear. They weren't talking, metal wire cutting into their mouth prevented them from doing that much. Spindle had dangled the man over the city street, the only thing preventing the fall being her good grace. That was why First Guard hadn't made more solid moves, they were too scared after their first assault's utter failure. 4Sight glanced over at that failure, the soldiers being wrapped in wire methodically, with one starting to be dragged up.

Spindle wasn't looking at the people she was wrapping up, which was a bit strange. Could she queue commands for her wire to that extent? A formidable enemy, even in the face of eight parahumans ready to fight her head on. Was it possible that they would lose this fight? How long would 4Sight have to drag this battle on before he could give them a perfect plan? Thinking back, 4Sight remembered the first time he had used his power, despite his attempts to stop it. They had been fighting a dug in insurgence for hours in an urban area. Unexpectedly, their enemies had begun firing mortars. 4Sight had made that last shell take three weeks to fall, spiraling towards the ground at a glacial. He and his AAR, Joel, had barely survived. Battered, bloody and shell shocked. 4Sight teleported them to a sort of safety. It had ruined the bond the two of them had been forming. Every time he looked at that man, he saw the faces’ of his squad slowly being torn apart by the shockwave, the heat burning their arms.

4Sight stumbled forward, almost falling to the ground in front of Slingshot. Thrown out of his power by losing concentration. He was so tired of war, tired of endless fighting. People like Spindle were the reason he couldn't sleep at night, the reason he had almost a century of power usage under his belt. He spoke into his comm now, voice sounding shaky. "Spindle seems to be able to control wire she isn't even looking at. Be very careful within these buildings, and out in the open. Do not make acts of aggression immediately, she has at least two hostages attached to a deadman's. Be careful. We've really gotta win this fight without any casualties, that is an order."

Dart meanwhile stepped forward eagerly as she looked up at the woman high above them. A hint of a smile crossed her face before she turned to the Junior Guard members.

”You heard 4Sight, no casualties and no acting suddenly. Take it slow. We want to keep this from becoming a fight.”

The Shaker

A wire shifted inside the lining of Spindle's clothes. A moment passed, and a second wire shifted. Two people on buildings nearby then, capes if she were to guess. In the distance Spindle could hear another helicopter, quickly arriving. It was pretty far from her, in the opposite direction of the helicopter she trapped. After a moment it began to retreat, and a small smile crossed her lips. Were they going to bring him right to her? It had been years since they'd seen each other. After a moment she traversed her wire and looked down at the procession of capes. The wind forced her eyes shut, but it faded rather quickly to a gentle breeze. No civilians were with the Final Guard, so he wasn't present. The grin that formed on her face faded a bit, but she couldn't suppress that small smile.

Idly she tugged at the necklace of wire hidden by her dress, running her fingers underneath where it was scratching her skin. Sighing, she glanced down at the squadron being tied up. Spindle thought about it, then began actively participating in tying two of them up who weren't getting as much attention. A negatory movement came from her power, a wire shifting underneath her collar. Giggling audibly, she raised her hands in surrender, before looking around. Almost immediately she spotted a neon figure climbing a nearby building. Spindle let her eyes stay for only long enough to confirm, before letting them drift over the rest of her surroundings. Wire was slowly scaling the crevices of another building, detectable by her power but not her sight. That was where the other one was hiding, apparently more of a threat.

It had been so lonely. Being in a crowd, being the center of attention was a huge change of pace. The last couple of people she'd seen before this event were paid to see her. All but her other half. Spindle glanced down at the ground below, wondering where she was hiding herself. The warm night of holding each other was the last physical contact Spindle could remember, before that was at least a year long gap. Had she gone crazy? Had her other half? It was so so hard to tell, she didn't feel crazy. In fact she felt in control. Of everything, in fact: her faculties, her future, her surroundings.

Without waiting for the signal, she swept her arms out. Wires lifted off the ground, below her by the hundreds, large thick pieces and thin razor sharp pieces. In two motions, they swept across the recently evacuated street. The wire swept out towards a central point before slamming into the buildings on both sides. Glass shattered, metal even tore against metal as a piece of wire cut a third of the way through a car. The approaching heroes wouldn’t be close enough, and those who covered unexpected distance would find the wire avoiding them. Spindle let the wind calm before raising the megaphone and turning it on.

"Let's talk." Spindle demanded, before letting the megaphone fall to the ground around 150 feet below her.
The Fallen

The Hunt

As Edith follow the woman, who kindly led her to a small food stand ran by a rather harried looking gentleman who was gazing in the direction of the crash as more noises erupted, too far to make out distinctly.

“Look ladies, I was gonna pack up with those noises, but I’ll make you my last customers.”

“Two please, and thank you,” the woman replied with a smile.

As the man handed over two burgers, the woman digging through her pockets for money, Edith would have to take the food. Once the food was in her hands, the woman found her change and paid quickly, thanking the man again while he packed up and shut the stand. Moments later the back door opened and closed and the man hurried off.

“You know, it must be hard not being at home,” the woman said softly as she took one of the burgers from Edith. Casually she opened the wrapper, steam rising from within, as she looked on down the street with a wistful expression on her face. “Family means everything. I’m sure your family would be willing to help you with whatever is going on, dear.”

She looked on sideways at Edith as a small smile lifted her lips.

“Would you like to talk about it? What you’re running from?”

Red Eye

The Bank

The creature grabbed a door, pulling it off of its hinges. It turned towards her and started a bull rush. Vanish took another step back, but she couldn't move fast enough. The door zipped over her head, small pieces of glass falling off of it. Before she could react, she found herself on her ass, the tail whipping over her head. Under her heels was a metal box, it had tripped her before she'd seen the secondary attack, apparently thrown by Percy. "Get safe" Percy called, reminding Vanish to turn around and start fleeing. "Give me a gun." Percy added, and Vanish complied. A gun appeared in her grip, and she threw it underhand to him. The angle was too high, but Percy gracefully stepped onto the counter to grab it out of the air with his left hand. Without moving his eyes from the crocodile man, he fired a shot at the teller behind the counter. The sound was deafening in the enclosed space, and the young woman screamed in response. Before Vanish's ears recovered, Percy fired again, the shot ripping apart the incapacitated guard's shoulder. Blood sprayed onto the floor, and a guttural cry of pain filled the air. He flourished, tossing the gun over his head to his right hand without looking. He pointed it at the teller again.

"How many people do you want to die because you're fucking dense?" Percy asked, that tone of dealing with an incompetent back in full force.

Vanish for her part tried to hide the fact that she was shaking, both unsteady hands raised at the crocodile man.

Exiled

Not with a bang...

As Mastar shot off to the side the second tank almost immediately diverted from the path, crashing through the brush towards her as it’s canon turned to head her off. A moment later there was the sound of the tank firing as it shot a few dozen feet ahead of where Mastar was heading. She had a split second to react before the explosion would go off way too close for comfort. Back at the truck however, a deep blue glow was beginning to grow from Manifold’s arm-cannon.

Arson’s shot rang out for several moments after the bullet left the barrel before there was a mighty clang as the bullet connected with the front armor of the tank. Sparks flew but the tank continued onward. Seconds later it became apparent that the bullet had been unable to penetrate the armor, in fact it seemed the the armor was merely scratched.

A second later the tank fired again, Manifold herself firing off a volley of several shots herself. The truck rocked harder than when Ana shot this time, nearly tipping over before it all but slammed back down onto four wheels. This time when the shots collided this time there was no implosion or black hole, but a canister sized crackle of blue energy landed on the ground, burning a ring in the dirt of the road. Right in front of Mastar another one landed before igniting the grass around it.

Manifold reached down with her non-cannon arm and slapped the hood of the truck next to Ana’s head before gesturing at the tanks.. Her meaning would be clear to her sister. ‘You’re not going to win a shot fight and I can’t outlast them on ammo. Go.’ The gap between the trio and the two tanks was closing.

Arson

Nothing. No damage what so ever. fucking tinker tech Ana let out a sigh and looked at Manifold. "Yeah, yeah I know. Fucken thing barely got scratched by Marta. Looks like I'll be punching tanks after all." That said Ana put her gun into the back of the truck and gave Manifold a nod before sprinting off towards the tanks.

Each step carried Ana far further than they had any right to, though instead of making heading straight at them Ana ran off to the side so that the tanks would have to adjust their aim. These tanks were obviously the work of a tinker and while Ana was pretty confident in her durability she'd had enough run-ins with tinker weapons to know that it's not a great idea to just let this stuff hit you, especially when its a bloody tank. Though as Ana quickly closed the distance with the tanks she remembered the rumbling that was shaking the car, that was still a thing she would have to worry about later.

Ana's first priority was disabling the main turrets on the tanks, she hoped she was strong enough to bend the barrels. There was only one way to find out, and the tanks were in leaping distance now. Here goes nothing Ana thought as she jumped at whichever tank was closest, she shot towards the side of the tank like a rocket.

Edith

Edith hesitantly took the burgers from the stand owner and watched as the man hurried off. This was stupid she should have just ignored the woman and kept going on her way... Edith unwrapped her own burger and listened to the woman, though Edith was unable to suppress a flinch when the woman asked if Edith wanted to talk about what "What you're running from."

Edith lowered her burger and sighed a little. "My family is the problem..." Edith felt her temper taking hold a little. it seemed that everyone wanted to chime in and help her deal with her troubles. The weirdo saying how to blend in better, and now this nosey chick trying to tell Edith to trust her family. These people had no fucking idea what Edith was dealing with, and if they did they'd probably be trying to lock Edith up and not give her advice.

It amazing how a little bit of ignorance changes peoples perception of you. "I would honestly prefer if you minded your own business. It would be better for both of us if you did." There was a slight hint of aggression in Edith's voice, it was clear she wasn't going open up.
