Wow. Best of luck, man. I don't know many people who are aware that war even happened. I don't know enough about the time period to feel confident playing in it but I would love to chat with you some time.

@Oak7ree That's awesome. I hope we can do this justice.
Talked to Cabbage emperor, and I think we'll be waiting a bit longer to see if we can get a 5th player.

@Mitzi421 If you or anyone else needs help with correct terms, ranks or the Defence Forces slang, I'd be glad to help. I am not an expert on every matter, but I'd have experience on basic infantry tactics.

I have been reading military history for almost 45 years and watched Talvisota (The Winter War) in the early 1990s. I'll have to rewatch this movie. I own a copy on VHS. The Russians were definitely over confident and the Finns were desperately fighting for their lives. Trench warfare was very much in style during this fight. I'll take a swing.

Here is a Youtube video I particularly enjoy Fire and Ice: The Winter War of Finland and Russia.

In this scenario, the Russians are the Northerners of House Stark and the Finns are the Wildlings. LOL

EDIT: I started work on a 20 year old private in the infantry. What title would use for Private? Jääkäri or Sotamies? I see there are two words for Light infantry, which do the Finns use: Sissi or Jäger? My guess is Sissi as there were numerous Sissi battalions that fought the Russians in 39-40. The word Jäger is German for hunter which is also used for Light Infantry.

@Gunther Sotamies would be correct, as jääkäri is a branch specific rank. The rank jääkäri was adopted from the German Jäger, as Finnish volunteers were given soldier training in Germany during the First World War. And sissi is a term for a soldier, who uses guerrilla-like tactics, like ambushes, infiltration and such things. There's also a slang term "sissijäynä" (sissi prank) for booby traps.

I'll write more thoroughly, when I get home, as I have only a phone at the moment.

I spent 21 years in the US Army. How you describe the Sissi above, that is what the US Army Rangers do. Rangers are considered the masters of patrolling. Combat Patrols include Ambushes and Raids. They use infiltration as a method for moving into the enemy rear areas routinely. The movie, "The Great Raid" exemplifies what Rangers do. Your definition of the Sissi is quite similar. I couldn't comment on the élan of the Sissi, but if they are anything like Rangers, they are bad ass.

A soldier in the infantry, would be in what type unit in the Finnish language? Would the terms Sissi and Jäger be used to identify a type of unit?

Most Finnish infantry would be trained as Jägers. I'm not an expert on the military organisation during the wars. I'd recommend taking a look at the life of Lauri Törni, as he served in Finnish, German and American armies.

I took a bit deeper look at the Finnish Army. Most of their infantry units were referred to as Jäger battalions.

More than likely, a Finnish Infantry Division (Jäger) consisted of three or four Regiments from various regions of the country. Each regiment would consist of three battalions. There may have been a brigade of Artillery with whatever systems that were available; maybe 2 - 4 battalions in the Division Artillery Brigade. Their supply and maintenance systems could have been piece-mealed from both military organizations and civilian volunteers close to the front. I'm watching the movie now. I see plenty of civilians bringing food and supplies to the front lines.

I read about the Sausage war last night. The Russians infiltrated behind the Finnish lines when they found a gap created by casualties. The officers thought this was wonderful and pushed their men through the gap. When the Russian foot soldiers smelled the sausages cooking in the field kitchen, their individual desire to eat; because they were starving took over. The Finnish soldiers took advantage of this and picked off all the Russians who went for the kitchens. They massacred them simply because they were desperate to eat a meal.

They had so many studies and so much research because of the World War period, and most of that was thrown out because it didn't relate to ever single scenario and most war was believed to be similar at the time. I think you would find interest in a youtuber called "lindybeige" specially if you like stories and studies.

Hey, thanks for sharing youtube links and other pieces of knowledge! Although I'm excited to learn about everything and hopefully do a decent job in portrayals, I also have comparatively minimal understanding on this particular subject. So I'm glad to see other people knowing what they're talking about- definitely would suggest one of you cohosting instead!

Not a problem @DeadDrop. Taking a class with a ridiculous amount of group busy work at the moment, so weekly and no slower than biweekly is where I'm sitting.

Not sure about once a month though, would need to check with @Cabbage emperor. Would it be easier if the posts weren't so frequently lengthy? I'd really love to include you, just trying to figure out what kind of character it would make sense for to dip in and out like that.
