Or the sophomore whose father was sent to jail for embezzlement? How about the junior who was allegedly in a relationship with one of her teachers? ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Freya's reputation in Ritman High seemed as though it had a life of its own, growing beyond her control as the rumor mill churned out endless claims about her life, her family, and her relationships. Within the year they relocated from New York to Delton, her family had become a frequent source of gossip and scandal in the otherwise peaceful town. Not that she was blameless in all this; Freya, caring little about what people thought, neither confirmed nor denied any of the rumors' validity, which only served to exacerbate their wildfire spread. For the most part, Freya had simply allowed herself to be swept away by the tempestuous tide of high school life. It didn't matter to her what she did or with whom, so long as she would be surrounded by people that can distract from the much more turbulent deluge that was her home life. Turned out that the popular clique was easiest to breach and preserve—wealth impressed them, simple as that. Freya let them throw as many parties as they wanted in her family's pseudo-mansion and that was more than enough to hold together their brittle friendship, if it can be called that. Even with her increasingly bad reputation, she was never directly ostracized by her chosen circle, although she supposed they all talked about her behind her back anyway. The number of students who knew truth from rumor remained the small handful that she truly considered friends. Although she often hung around her elitist clique for the mindless distraction, she shared more intimate moments with unlikely friends, finding solace in their pointed lack of interest in her supposed scandals. One of her biggest regrets has been not keeping in touch with them. When she had to suddenly move back to New York, her mother had forbidden her to contact anyone outside the family. They packed their things and left within a day, just a week before her graduation. |
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ power Almost like the world is conspiring against her, Freya has gained the power of telepathy. Generally speaking, she can project, read, and manipulate the thoughts of anyone within a certain range. This ability has many applications, most of which require her utmost focus or she runs the risk of getting overloaded. Its easiest and most straightforward use is to send or receive the thoughts (and sometimes emotions) of those around her. This is not limited to a single target, and in fact, more focus and effort is required to single out an individual's thoughts. With enough practice, Freya can tune this so she can also share the senses one mind is experiencing with herself or someone else. Manipulating thoughts is vastly more difficult and takes a toll on her physically and mentally. With a lot of strain and concentration, Freya can induce hallucinations into a single target's mind. It lasts for as long as she can withstand the headache it causes, or until her concentration is broken. There are limits to what she can project—mainly, it has to be something she can clearly envision herself—and these hallucinations' effects are entirely dependent on how the target handles them. Lastly, Freya can also implant suggestions or commands in the mind of others, although doing so is even more demanding to her body. It doesn't work like regular mind control, where she simply wills someone to perform an action and they succumb to it, at least not yet. It's more like having a mini-Freya standing on your shoulder, whispering in your ear, coaxing you to do her a favor. | ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ▼ s t r e n g t h s ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ► Getting in the head of her opponent can be incredibly advantageous, provided she has the means to utilize the knowledge she obtains. Works best in tandem with others, where she can supplement their abilities with precious intel. ▼ w e a k n e s s e s► Messing with an aggressor's mind can lead to clouded judgment, lowered composure, or distraction, generally leaving them in a debilitated state. ► Can provide secure and reliable long-distance communication. ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ► Perhaps the biggest drawback from her ability is that the switch starts on, so to speak. Freya has to actively stop from listening in, and still needs to learn how to ignore or silence the voices. If she's surrounded by too many people, their thoughts could overwhelm and incapacitate her. If even a single person who has very strong convictions, their thoughts come across as loud, unwavering yells. The more intense the thought, the louder it is. -In addition to the toll exerted on mind and body, thought manipulation also demands absolute focus. Even the slightest distraction can unravel a hallucination or a suggestion. And obviously, Freya has no means of physical defense. She's as strong as your average twenty-something-year old. |
psyche INTJ. ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔With her signature wry smile and calculating gaze, it would seem as though nothing fazes Freya. Not the rumors that trailed her around most of her life, nor the insurmountable expectations her mother demanded of her. Instead, she is flippant when put under pressure, seemingly in control of whatever situation she's in, even when she's very clearly out of her element. Freya will pursue any and all endeavors as though there is a 100% success rate. And if she fails, well, then she'll just make it seem like she did it on purpose. Her poise is often misconstrued as the cocksureness of someone too young and privileged to have known any hardships, and while there is some truth to that sentiment, it isn't entirely accurate. The trick Freya learned at a very early age—had to learn lest she succumb to the toxicity surrounding her—was to drown out the noise and let her inner voice ring loudest. If she seems entirely self-assured, it's because she tells herself that she is and ignores everyone else telling her otherwise. Freya had been so afraid of getting hurt that she erected wall after wall around her, keeping any detractors from getting close. Unfortunately, without realizing, she had not only shut out the bad, but the good as well. She distanced herself from her friends and family, even her true self—she had put on this self-assured, blasé persona for so long that she's worried her world will come crumbling down if she sheds it. The truth is, beneath all the pretense is a bleeding heart that gets attached too quickly and too deeply. Nothing scares Freya more than baring her soul, because she knows that if she lets someone in, there is no questioning her devotion. She will kill for you, die for you, tear herself apart for you. |

Thank god it was Delton though, there are plenty worse places to get financially stranded. They were one family out of the thousands of classic immigrant stories, arriving with nothing but their luggage and barely applicable Chinglish. A father and a mother, a daughter and a son. The town received them generously but that wasn't grounds for getting complacent. The Zhous worked themselves to the bone as repayment. Sara, bright as she was, sure as hell wasn't spectacular, not in the way that would get her into an Ivy League school. Not the way she knew her parents secretly wished, as stubbornly mute as they were about their children's future. But Sara was a Zhou through and through, and she was determined to prove it. High school was an academic breeze and Sara rode high on the winds. She had a reputation for knowing everything and everyone. Science decathlon, student council, soccer team. People respected her because of her work ethic but they liked her because she was a reliable friend. Very reliable, almost worryingly so. Of course, being a high school, there were some detractors. Rumors of her being a secret lesbian, citing her laissez-faire fashion sense and apparent lack of romantic interest in boys. Calling her a narc, a goody-two shoes. Man, she was totally overloading. How does she cram all the shit she has to do in a single week? She was gonna burn out so hard. They were wrong. The fire never flickered. It was extinguished. It was a senseless, excruciating thing. Her father always insisted on providing their driving lessons himself, to cut down the costs. Her brother had been the one at the wheel. Willard never forgave himself, skipping town four months afterwards in a car bought with his own money. Couldn't use the one he totalled on the highway. They were only halfway through the school year then. There was no moral. No lesson to be taken from this. Sara graduated, numb as frostbite. Exemplary grades, outstanding extracurriculars. And for what? She returned to Delton after a single semester of college and hasn't set foot outside ever since. |
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ power Short range time manipulation. Pretty straightforward stuff. By pressing her hands to a target, organic or non-organic, she can ramp up the passage of time affecting it. Her maximum output currently sits around five years per minute. Both hands must be used for this. Sara cannot de-age a target, nor can she use her ability on herself. There are severe consequences if she uses her ability to much in a short amount of time, sensations akin to sparks and spasms running up her arms until she can no longer move them at all. Thankfully, this cooldown period is temporary, but with every occurrence of this seeming longer than the last, Sara is unsure if she wants to keep testing her limits. | ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ▼ s t r e n g t h s ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ Her ability can be extremely restorative and destructive, provided she can think up applications for it. ► Restoratively, her power can be paired with her first aid knowledge to essentially amount to an insta-fix, provided the procedure is done right. This cooldown period can last from hours to days, depending on the degree of excessive usage. ► Because Sara cannot de-age her targets (yet), her effects are permanent. ► Still has her normal, human weaknesses. Her power does not work on herself. ► The specifity of the ability can also be its handicap. Its application is limited to Sara's improvisational capacity. ► A significant mental and emotional block is in place when it comes to using her ability on living beings. The Consul (ESFJ) archetype. A confident speaker, cool under pressure, dry of wit, the rock amongst her many, many, fr-- ...acquaintances. Need an extra planner for the fair? Need a substitute for your volleyball team? Need someone to deadlift all the orchestra equipment? Sara was up for the job. Not only that, she'd do it pretty damn well. There was an unnatural level of perseverence in every action she took, topped off with a grit smirk as she conquered everything in her path. Seven years since graduation, Sara has remained sturdy as ever, albeit with a more noticeable sense of brusqueness. It became apparent the more distant she got from her old social circle. It wasn't loyalty to her colleagues. It was loyalty to a job well done. Her investment in others is questionable, as if their problems are mere checkboxes on a to-do list rather than something she wants to help with out of genuine concern. There's a peculiar engrossment she finds in other people. She doesn't always want to 'help', in the traditional sense. Sara sees the path to victory, to the completion of a task, and she gets it done. Whether this makes her come off as scheming, or even manipulative, means little to her. "Neat little factoid about sharks. If they stop moving, they die." Beyond it all, in the quieter moments when there's nothing she can keep herself busy with, it flakes away. She flinches when cars go too fast past the crossings. She pales at the sight of any blood. She wrings her hands as she stares into space, lips pressed into a vacant frown. It's dangerous to be alone with her thoughts. Some time P.J's usually does the trick. Something to plug the leak for a few hours. Every night she numbs her brain. And every morning, she wakes with a grimace. |

When anyone asked, he gave an appeasing answer and turned the tables back against them to see how their high school experiences were. ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔In his time at Ritman High, he was an interesting and popular student as both his peers and teachers would say, being a familiar face that people knew and talked to. This likability mostly came from his easy going and 'go with the flow' kind of attitude that made it easy for other people to talk to him as it seemingly didn't matter even if they were a upperclassmen or a underclassmen. He was likened to being a font of unrelenting cheerfulness that many people saw him as quite the bubbly and playful individual, often being described as someone who was 'intense' or 'aloof'. While not meaning much from Alex, he accepted it as something that he simply wore on his sleeve and that attitude itself made many people believe that he always lived in the moment, never seeming to care much for what happened afterward. As such, he had sporadic achievements around school without much focus and a whimsical nature that people knew he wouldn't commit to something long time, that was simply Alex. What he gave in return for people around him though was a true appreciation for the moment, most people didn't mind him because of that part of him as it was something seemingly older than someone like him should have. A person with wisdom beyond their years as people would say, even if they got themselves into trouble or had fun outings, he was always be the one responsible. It was something reliable about him that people saw and appreciated him for, leading him to always being at the fun end of a joke about everyone being his family. In truth, many people didn't know who Alex really was, most people didn't even have much of a clue about his life in general as he kept these private matters to himself. More correctly, he didn't open himself up to allow such personal things to be seen by other people, preferring to focus on other people and their problems rather than his own. As for Alex, he didn't have a tragic or difficult life, if anything at most it would be a complicated situation but how everything was received and interpreted on his end was quite poor that lead to this issues forming. This was a problem even before his time during Ritman High, being a person who could intuitively feel as someone who was left out, he sought to fix it himself. This turbulent time for him went mostly unnoticed because he never want anyone to worry about it, learning to acquire quite the poker face by looking at the people around him to see what they were doing that he wasn't. For his shortcomings and inadequacies, he incorporated elements of other people's personality into himself as a mask for himself to grow into and to be accepted. To this day, if anyone one were to notice a crack in the mask he puts on display for anyone, he'd quickly seal it up and ease any concerns that they may have as that was, again, how he simply worked. |
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ power Subliminal and Beauty Manipulation. The concept of what makes culture and beauty is a vague topic that is different depending on the person you ask and can entirely change depending on the society that is in question. There are some thing, however, that are universal within the world that can be said without being bound to things such as language, culture, or individual tastes, but that's perhaps that's a subjective opinion. It does, however, have a ring of truth as human interactions within the world are complex structures that are not easily navigated through. That is the ability which Alex possesses, being the ability to manipulate and create these phenomenons from the world around them. His ability to create objects that are beautiful usually are things such as gemstones, crystals, and light which are the main area of his focus. For something that already exists in the world with its own existence in place already, it is impossible for him to force his certain aspects of his ability onto them. He can, however, influence them as a investment of a long time process to imbue his desired concepts into them such as 'beauty' which can be found in the end result if there is no resistance. One could compare this ability to being something like reverse empathy where his emotions and intentions are the ones that are revealed to other people. For a more definite grasp on the mental capabilities of his powers, he's able of imbuing his words and actions with a kind of intensity and weight that is something akin to a mind manipulating ability on others. In truth, this is more of a side effect of him using his ability that invokes a response from such immense feelings coming from Alex or whatever he is doing. The control he has over their reactions is nonexistent as it is ultimately up to them with how they reacting, his ability may have them a few steps closer to his desired result but it cannot force them if they don't willingly want to. As a ability which only causes a response, the effects that his ability can manifest can greatly range but it is guaranteed to grab someone's attention like a magical enchantment from a fairy tale if someone is caught off guard. Its like a dream that befalls upon a person that enraptures for a moment them before disappearing upon entering the waking world once again. With an ability with a more esoteric and abstract applications, its evolution as Alex develops his abilities can only branch out to who knows. | ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ▼ s t r e n g t h s ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ► As such an understated power, the energy required to use Alex's ability is almost nonexistent, being something that is always active for him as a natural instinct. Alex's ability is in its strongest environment when dealing with social engagements or, simply put, more mundane matters in everyday life. It is an ability that is exceptional at persuasion, being capable of putting significant weight to words that people wouldn't doubt to be a lie or a significance to them that people wouldn't challenge. Due to its nature, it is a deceivingly powerful ability that can also flare up with its user's emotions, becoming stronger if the effects align with Alex's own emotions. ▼ w e a k n e s s e s▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ ► Due to the nature of Alex's powers, since it is a ability that is always on for him, any changes of his mood are extremely prone to affecting his powers in unpredictable ways. However, that is the least of his worries as his powers are dreadfully incompatible with combat which requires deliberate and tangible use of force when it is called for, possessing literally no inherent offensive capabilities for him to use. It will require him to be creative to get around the shortcomings of his powers as even defensive application of his powers are difficult to imagine or even use even if thought of. - |
psyche Personally, Alex has always seen himself as an introvert but repeatedly the idea has been rejected by people as he's seen as 'the popular one' or as 'someone who knew everyone'. This might of been a shallow observation from others, but Alex never had really close friends that he's let into his own life. Mostly having presented himself as a cheerful person who went along with anything lead many people finding him simply easy to talk to and befriend. ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔However, there is truly a difference between being truly a kind and compassionate individual or being kindhearted so that other people would like you. As for himself, he's always gauged himself to fall in the latter category as a phony, keeping himself under wraps as the outside world never managed to pierce through the veil he always placed up. That never meant he didn't truly interact with people genuinely but he's like a baby chick who never broke out of their shell, having never found a solid anchor for himself to establish on. As such, he always enjoyed the presence of others who he finds as better people than him, supporting them and wishing them the best over his own self. If he was to conduct his own test about his personality, he'd fall under the archetype of the Mediator, being quite the accurate description for him yet not without a few discrepancies. Same with the star sign of his birth being Cancer, it is also another aspect of him that he resonates with parts of the description yet does not fully describe him. Together with the two of them, he'd agree that he would be a prime example as he places his own emotional baggage onto the back burner while prioritizing others, being a behavior that he aptly does which align with the two classifications. In a sense, the protective and cautious aspect of his personality takes to the forefront, while his emotional side is truly evident in the care he provides for his friends that may surprise people. However, the mask that he placed on in high school didn't simply end when graduating, like any habit you'd continue with them until yourself or something pushes a change to say otherwise. In fact after Ritman High, with his maturity and wisdom gained, he's ability to fit into the mask that he design is like a natural instinct for him. Anything that is going on in the back of his mind builds up there until he eventually implodes in one way or another, whether it be today or next week, that is simply how his personality is and always been. If one were to gauge between his high school and graduated self, with age one could look back and say there was always a distance and feeling of distance that now has a stronger presence of melancholy if you caught Alex off his guard. Sometimes if you catch him at the end of his fuse, his emotional side may violently crack its way through the mask that he placed in front of him, but that's when a person should notice that it's really a red flag. |
