Blood Drive

Discord HERE

Premise

You are just another student at Aomori Gakuen, located in Jitsuryoku-jima, a fictional island situated somewhere in Japan. Unbeknownst to you and the majority of its populace, this island has served as the setting for numerous supernatural happenings through its history and, to this day, is still considered as a point of interest by a good part of the factions present within the occult-side of the world. One day, Jitsuryoku-jima experiences a 'mysterious earthquake' and is soon swallowed whole, diving headfirst into a different dimension.

A desolate wasteland for the most part, its original inhabitants appear to be monstrous creatures who'll try to kill you on sight. With scarce resources, little clues and the clear weakness inherent to all human beings, you'll be thrown into a constant struggle for survival as you do your best to uncover the mystery behind the tragedy that brought you there, learning more and more about the RP's setting as you progress. Your decisions will affect not just your fate, but that of other survivors as well.

This Roleplay Contains

  • Elements that draw inspiration from Type-Moon works, but possess their own original touch to keep them fresh.
  • Challenging enemies and a realistic combat system that will require you to be crafty in battle at all times. Bear in mind that some serious injuries sustained by characters may be permanent.
  • Eventual 'class upgrades' that will allow you to improve your characters, several of which can unlock and employ supernatural powers and/or tools. Expect their use to be limited, so as to keep the difficulty high. Remaining a normal human will also be rewarded.
  • A relationship system that will mark how close you are to NPCs and dictates the way they'll act towards you in moments of crisis. Working in groups will be mandatory in a world where going solo might as well be suicide.
  • Sanity and Drive to Live represented as attributes that you'll have to manage in order to earn temporary and dramatic power-ups or avoid an immediate game-over regardless of your physical health.
  • Going in blind: More that you'll be learning as you progress through the game, as opposed as knowing how everything works beforehand.
  • May obviously include violence, sugestive themes and strong language.
  • A player-base that should be between five and nine players.

System Overview

Survivor Attributes, Weaknesses and Advantages

While it is true that some people are more gifted than others, Blood Drive intends to put players on a similar scale when it comes to physical and mental skills one expects from a normal person. In that sense, do not expect to go kicking through walls or withstanding bullets, or moving at unreasonable speeds any time soon. At least not without the use of supernatural powers. Expect to be, in most cases, as frail and weak as the average human being (Well, maybe a little tougher since we're anime, but you get what I mean). Let's take a look at the five main attributes and what they mean:

Strength: Represents your physical might. How much you can lift, how hard you can swing and, occasionally, how well you can deal with mundane bindings.
Vitality: The talent to endure harm. On its own will not reduce damage much, but will help the user resist negative effects that may derive from it such as status effects or the loss of consciousness.
Mobility: How fast and how well one can move. Though it affects evasion rate somewhat, it has more to do with the ability to perform feats that require one to be swift and flexible while minding one’s balance. Improves the success rate of agility-based stunts as well as stealth.
Intelligence: An attribute that reflects knowledge and creativity being put to practice. Rewards a clever approach by improving the success of plans and tactics that revolve around exploiting a particular weakness or using the environment to one’s advantage.
Supernatural: The measure of one’s supernatural potential, which can be tapped to perform actions usually outside the scope of what’s considered normal. An initially dormant and limited resource, it cannot be abused without consequence.

At the start of the roleplay, you’ll be given the chance to either leave all your attributes at average level or pick one you are gifted in and another which will suffer from a lower performance in return. This ties in the with the Advantage and Weakness System that will be implemented. Through actions, items and abilities, a character can influence their attributes to obtain what is called an advantage, a small yet notorious gap in ability that must be bridged somehow by the one on the receiving end if they intend to keep up the pace. An advantage does not necessarily need to be ‘cancelled out’ by another, as clever actions can help mitigate their effects but, at the same time, they can’t be no-sold without a solid argument. To put an example, in a foot race, someone with an advantage in mobility would normally emerge victorious against someone who lacks it, however, the latter could use the environment to create an obstacle to slow down the opponent, and win, provided he does it in a way that would catch the other by surprise.

If you choose to pick one of your attributes as your forte, then all actions related to that attribute will be advantageous. In other words, you get a free advantage others need to figure how to overcome if they want to match you on that field. To compensate, however, another attribute will receive a weakness, which always puts you on a tough spot when dealing with actions that have to do with it. Through actions, items and abilities you may be able to raise this attribute to average level, but no higher than that.

Normally, Advantages/Disadvantages do not stack (although certain classes may allow you to do so). In addition, if both characters have an advantage on the same field, their effects cancel each other out, meaning they would be evenly matched.

Drive to Live & Raise the Heat // Sanity and Madness

Drive to Live is a sub-attribute which is given a starting numeric value that ranges from 15 to 30. It represents your desire to survive, the force that pushes you to keep going even when the odds are stacked against you and there is seemingly no hope in sight. Through various actions, decisions and encounters, the Will attribute will fluctuate. If it happens to drop to zero, the character will lose all motivation to go on and won’t be able to perform any defensive or offensive actions. This normally leads to a game over if one doesn’t have someone nearby to rekindle the flame of life. On the other hand, should it rise high enough, it might be possible to gain temporary buffs by triggering ‘Raise the Heat’.

Raise the Heat is a special ‘mode’ that activates when a character meets two specific conditions: 1. Be on a life threatening situation or one where one’s own beliefs must be proven no matter what. and 2. Have a Drive to Live score superior to a certain threshold defined by one’s own Class. Average Humans have it easier when it comes to triggering Raise the Heat, however, the resulting buff they get from it pales in comparison to that of Supernatural Classes. Raise the Heat is temporary and can only be used once per scene. Its strength tends to vary depending on how often it is used overall. So save it for scenes where you really need to shine!

Sanity is the second sub-attribute and is also given a starting numeric value that ranges from 80 to 100. Sanity reflects how separated you are from the idea of a normal life and how much past experiences have affected your psyche. The lower your Sanity, the more removed you’ll become from society. While there is no real benefit to reaching a high Sanity score, you’ll permanently lose control of your character once it reaches zero, as the character loses all sense of self and gives in to ‘Madness’.

Madness marks a point of no return for the character. It has already been explained what happens when it drops to zero, but that’s not all there is to it. As soon as the character’s sanity drops to fifteen or less, they’ll be given a permanent affliction to go with the traumas they’ve experienced up until that point. An affliction is a passive and often negative compulsion that the character will feel the urge to pursue. The more they remain in a low threshold, the more chances they have of being given an affliction, and be aware that this isn’t limited to just one. Even if the character somehow manages to restore their sanity to an acceptable level, those afflictions will remain, albeit their effects will be reduced somewhat. This serves as evidence that Madness always leaves a scar.

Character Rules & Expectations

  • We'll be using anime/manga Face Claims for this Roleplay. Thus, the use of Faceclaims that do not stick to this style is prohibited.
  • The CS I provide is there merely as a guide. I am pretty bad at it, so feel free to fix it or make it look pretty. In short, You can modify it as you wish so long as your version still provides the basic information I need.
  • Understand that we are in this together and we're in this to have fun. Though the campaign itself may feel challenging at times, I am here to watch and support you, not to get yourself killed the first chance I get. Be cooperative with me, as well as the rest of the players, and that alone should get you far.
  • Avoid the creation of characters that are conveniently suited for a 'zombie apocalypse' situation. Generally speaking, skills like gunsmanship, survivalism, and other talents outside the range of a high-school student will be frowned upon if they lack a pretty solid explanation. Try to go with skills that suit your character's personality and backstory even if they may seem lack-luster or seemingly useless. You will be rewarded for doing so.
  • Be aware that this game will require you to work as a group, and not being able to keep up with the pace of the game will not be tolerated. At the very least, one should have a post ready one week after their respective update, although being able to post faster will make the plot move forward rapidly as well.
  • Unless asked otherwise, please do not post more than once per round. Post once and then sit patiently and wait for a GM update.
  • This list is subject to change at any time. Should it happen, you'll be notified in the OOC thread. Keep yourself updated.

Class Information

At the beginning of the game, you'll be treated as a normal human being, but other classes will become available as you progress. Some will allow you to remain as you are, while others will come at the cost of a part of your humanity. Their information will be added here as their advantages and weaknesses are revealed in-game.

Average Human
Those who are unaware of the supernatural side of the world. They might have read or heard about the occult, they may or might not believe in it, but the truth is that they never have seen it with their own eyes, and that’s likely to remain the same for the rest of their lives. Their lives are devoted to a mundane routine filled with hardships but hardly any danger, however, it seems that is what allows them to treasure it the most.

+ Average Humans are the only class allotted a secondary experience pool. Unlike the primary experience pool, which only fills after taking direct involvement in combat, the secondary experience pool increases just by staying alive. The more meaningful events you live through during your survival, the more points that will be awarded. This allows the humans to level-up faster, based on their innate ability to adapt to hostile environments.
+ Under moments of great stress or where there are high risks at stake based one’s own beliefs, Average Humans can exchange unspent points in their secondary experience pool for a brief surge of power that translates into momentary advantage in any area, including Supernatural.
+ Average Humans are the only class allowed to ‘Class-Up’, keeping certain Class Advantages and Disadvantages, as well as gaining some of the new Classes’. However, an opportunity must present itself for them to do so. Only available if Supernatural isn’t chosen as a weakness at the start of the game.

- Being new to the other side of the world, average humans have a tough time dealing with the supernatural and extremely stressful situations, such as someone else’s death. The rate at which sanity is lost is increased.
- As an average human, even if you pick Supernatural as your Forte, it can’t really be accessed until one is given the chance to ‘Class-Up’.

At first I was eyeing this, but now I think I'm definitely hooked. Might not have something ready until late in the week though since it's exam week tho.

@heroic2019 Just to make sure but are character themes, a quote and an alias all things you feel are necessary or are they just extra info?

@RisqueBootsNice! Looking forward to it!

@Cu Chulainn Glad to see that you like it, I promise you won't be disappointed. Best of luck on your exams and don't worry, you have time.

For the most part, they should be extra info that you may ignore. Out of the three, I feel like a quote is the most important. It's by no means mandatory, but it would definitely help build the idea of a character, much like your Face Claim does.

I am not really good at it, but I managed to set up a discord, in case you want to talk, bounce ideas and what not. Click me!

@RisqueBootsi'll give it a second look once i get back from work, but it looks solid. With this, i have a good idea of what character you want to play. I hope you are ready to suffer! (?)

And here's a somewhat related question for those that have more experience withthe site. Once a player is allowed to post their character in the character tab, clwho has permission to edit it? Them only? The game master as well? Just the GM? I need to know in order to organize myself regarding character progression. Thanks in advance!

Okay, I've taken my time and read the finished sheets submitted thus far -actually, I did read unfinished profiles as well-, listened to their tracks and made a little relationship chart for myself. In short, it's time to pass judgment!

@RisqueBootsSimple and to the point, and I like the concept quite a bit. Looking forward to see how she fares/evolves once thrown into the depths of hell . Also, intelligence is my personal favorite among attributes, so glad to see someone went for it as a Forte. Anyways! You are good to go! Feel free to post your CS in the respective tab.

@SilverPawVery good and develped character; fits well into the current cast. Has potential and I hope he gets far enough to prove his worth. Likewise, you are approved. Go ahead and add him to the character tab!

Overall, I like what I see. Do I spot someone with a 'weak' label at supernatural? Brave!

Hit me up if one of the WIPs gets finished.

@heroic2019 I think my cs is ready to be reviewed. I didn't include any themes because I've never been good at figuring out what kinda mood those instrumentals were trying to portray, possibly because I'm autistic, and if I guessed wrong that would defeat their purpose

@KyuuzenNeat concept. You are aware that, with Supernatural as your Weakness, you won't be able to class-up, right? With that Faceclaim, I assume that's your intent, but I have to make sure. If so, welcome to hard mode, brave one! Don't worry, you'll still have other ways to develop your character. Although... In hindsight, everyone starts off as an average human. Does that mean the tutorial is actually a deathtrap...? You may add your profile to the characters tab.

@DuthguyHoh, a jack of all trades, master of none appears. Simple, but incorporates a surprisingly good amount of things I can use for the RP proper. Lack of soundtracks is not a problem. You are accepted.

As of now, and as it was to be expected, second year is rather popular. Looks like a good amount of players will also be classmates. On other news, Kou can't catch a break, as she's probably the one the poorest image among non player characters. How tense will this situation become, when everyone is thrown into a life-or-death scenario, I wonder?

Once we reach the five player mark (we should be at 4), we'll be ready to start. Naturally, we'll wait on everyone who has expressed enough interest to work on a CS (up to nine, cause I can't handle more players than that) before we kick off with the IC. Thanks for your support so far!
