Keaton Plasse

Watching the two as she spoke, Keaton noted the initial suspicion both first regarded her with. It made sense, considering the damage people around them could do, but she was glad that both of them seemed to relax quickly. Getting on peoples’ bad side was one thing she wasn’t planning on doing anytime soon.

“Nice to meet you both, and yeah, something of the sort. I got it back and cleaned it, but trying to wear something after someone vomited on it is a little… ” Keaton trailed off. “But whatever. I’m just glad I came out in one piece,” she said, shrugging.

At Lynn’s question, Keaton flashed her a sheepish smile. “I saw that dude,[” she said, indicating Archie, “carrying flowers and decided to follow him. Been trying to meet people now that I’m in a floating aquarium, but I promise I’m not this creepy most of the time.”

She paused, taking a moment to see how her reasoning had gone over. When neither of her audience seemed particularly bothered, she continued.

“I lost track of him after he went into the hospital, but I saw you two trying to sneak out so I thought I’d help with the lady at the front desk. Imagine my surprise when Freaky-D skated by right after,” she said laughing. “I think I’ve seen or met just about everyone from my first day now. As for the people I haven’t seen yet, well, I can go without seeing them for longer.”

She paused, looking between the two, then the four. “You guys all friends though? I wouldn’t have thought you guys were friends after the first day. Too many scrapes and stuff, but I guess my past friendships have been on the tamer side.”

Archie

"I think we should look out for each other from now on. Help each other stay under control and stuff."

Archie smiled at this, and let Natalie's hands go. He felt the weight lift off his chest knowing that for the most part everything was okay now. He liked what Natalie insinuated, though. That they would look out for one another. The promise of not letting him go too far. It was sweeter, and 'If you go too far, I'll kick your ass' didn't have the same ring to it.

He looked over to the other two, three now. It seemed that the club had gained a new member. A new friend that he could make. He caught Lynn's eyes on him for a moment and frowned when he noticed her glare. She sharply looked away and continued conversation naturally. A part of Archie wasn't sure what to make of that other than she was upset at him for something. He looked back at Natalie and gave her an apologetic smile. "Why dont you go on ahead. I'll catch up."

When Natalie had nodded and given him at the beautiful quaint smile of hers, Archie had absconded off of the sidewalk, intent on getting her and Amelia flowers as well. It dropped off into a decline for around eight or so feet before leveling off and transitioning into pines and conifers. The forest floor was dotted with ferns and other low underbrush- but Archie was looking for wildflowers again. He didn't have any particular type in mind, just some sort of flowering plant. Hell, he'd bring Natalie a pine cone back if he thought she'd get a kick out of it.

The dirt was becoming progressively more loam, and he could hear the sound of flowing water. The smell alone brought back fond memories of home, and without much thought he allowed himself to travel deeper. The trees were becoming thinner now, and he found himself by the river that traveled around the length of the ring. He looked to his left and followed the easy arch as the water, land, the small orange lights of a campground of all things, and buildings sloped easily and faded into the darkness of the sky above. He looked directly upwards and found himself trying to discern between the lights of still-lit rooms and the stars in the night. Eventually he realizes that he's still breathing— his lungs are protesting and his chest feeling as empty as ever, but it's nothing he can't handle. Archie opens his eyes (when did he close them?) and looks back up at the sky, the stars—they had known all his secrets, once upon a time. The night sky stays as silent as ever. He listens to the sound of insects and frogs croaking away along the river. It's funny- perhaps this tin can in space wasn't so unlike his home after all.

He turned to his right and followed the river a few more paces in search of a flowering plant- and eventually found one. He knelt down, humming to himself, and gathered a few more flowers with the intent of giving them to Natalie and Amelia.

Then, he saw it. Less than ten feet from him. A shape had washed ashore and was shifting ever so slowly with the flow of the river. Archie didn't realize he was moving until he was almost upon it- but stopped short as soon as realized what it was. It was a body.

The man was horribly broken- collapsed chest, the leg was bent in all the wrong ways, missing fingernails, missing fingers. Archie skidded to a halt, falling flat on his ass no more than a few feet from the body. He was screaming, a part of him realized. In surprise, and in fear. He hadn't even realized that he had started screaming until he had stopped. His chest pounded, and with shaking fingers he placed his hand across his chest—

And there it is, the familiar thump, thump, thump of his heart, now far stronger than it normally was. His chest burned and for the first time in days he felt the call of the other guy. He was scared, terrified even. He turned over and threw up, but whipped around as soon as he was finished as if the body was going to come alive at any moment. This didn't happen here. The Promise had zero deaths in history and here he was, faced with a literal corpse. Someone had been killed and recently, too. The body was in the early stages of decay and his rapidly sharpening senses could now detect the horrid odor of rotting flesh. He seized, his clothes tightening on his body, but he fought the transformation. He didn't need to turn- he rationalized. He wasn't in any immediate danger. He was okay. He was okay.

He felt his body physically relax without his say, as if he were an observer and no longer in control. He felt the heat and tightness in his chest fade, but he was still paralyzed in shock by the body in front of him. He pushed himself away from the corpse- further away from the water, unable to take his eyes off of it. The others must've heard him. They'd be here any moment now. They would follow his gaze and see it too.

What the hell were they to do?

Promise Security HQ. Shortly after D’s capture.

D was seated in a little metal chair. His hands were cuffed together behind his back. His helmet was still very much broken, attempting to display his default face, but ending up as a mess of colors and cracks. He sat in the cold grey interrogation chamber while three guards waited outside, his more-caring-than-would-be-expected captor Radvi included. After some moments of silence, another man entered the room. Middle-eastern, somewhat average build and height, short hair and a well trimmed beard.

The Promise’s own Head of Security, Gennedy Hardin.

“Jacob.” He said to Radvi in greeting, before turning towards the interrogation chamber. He took one look at D through the glass window and said, “Why’s his helmet still on?”

“We couldn’t get it off.” Radvi replied, “It’s sealed around his head somehow. Rest of his clothes are, too. The medical team tried to give him trauma care but-”

“Forget it, forget it. I don’t need details.” Gennedy said, “I’m gonna talk to him, you stay put.”

Radvi nodded. Gennedy went to the door leading into the interrogation chamber and stepped inside. D very slightly turned his head in his direction, though all the Head of Security saw were broken pixels and cracked screen. He grimaced somewhat as he rounded the table. There was a second chair available, but he decided to stand.

“A whole week.” Gennedy calmly began, “Impressive, staying on the station that long. Dodging us the whole time. Leaving your… ‘tags’ everywhere.”

D didn’t respond.

“Had to come to an end at some point.” Gennedy continued, “And better it turned out to be sooner rather than later. Because trespassing and vandalism are both mild crimes, sure, but that stunt you pulled last week? During orientation? The first thing you did was over the goddamn line. Kicking that kid’s face and setting him off, making him turn into that monster, putting other students’ and my own men at risk.”

Still no response.

“If your goal here was to just have a laugh, you convinced me otherwise with what you did.” Gennedy said as he planted both of his hands on the surface of the table, leaning forward. “I would get a crowbar and pry that ridiculous helmet right off your head no matter how well it’s sealed on there, and then beat you into a bloody smear with it, but frankly… I could not care less who you actually are. Because I am not going to entertain your foolishness on this station anymore. You are out.”

And yet still, no response. It wasn’t clear if he wouldn’t or couldn’t, but D was remaining silent in this man’s presence. Gennedy stood back upright, giving D one more look of utter disdain, and at the same time, dismissal. He stepped out of the interrogation chamber and stood before his men.

“Take him to an airlock.” He said, “Space him.”

“Wh-” Radvi began, “Sir, is that… really necessary?”

“As far as I am concerned, he is directly responsible for last week’s mess.” Gennedy replied, pointing at D through the glass. “He is a danger to the Promise, hiding behind that jokester disguise. And if we can save the authorities down on Earth from having to deal with him, I consider that a bonus.”

“Sir, I honestly don’t think-”

“Jacob, I don’t fucking care what you think.” Gennedy retorted, “He’s getting spaced and that is final. We’ll tell Dunbar that we put him on a shuttle and handed him over to the right people planetside, and as far as she’ll be concerned, that’ll be the end of it. And no one will explain to her otherwise, or there will be consequences - severe. Consequences. Is that clear?”

Radvi didn’t respond right away. He knew full well that attempting to argue with this man would likely result in nothing good happening to him. So he yielded and said, “Yes… sir. I understand.”

Gennedy nodded and left the room without another word. The other two guards moved to secure D and begin escorting him to his demise.

Radvi hesitated. All his good will was for nought, it seemed.

Lynn

There were a lot of things about Amelia that pissed Lynn off. Chief among them was that this bitch was insufferably sharp. Lynn did not like that one iota. Now, she was completely off the mark with her two-timing comment - as if Lynn would even have a sliver of feelings for Archie was ridiculous - but Lynn did not like how observant she was.

"Yeah," Lynn said neutrally. "Molotov." That worked or whatever. Lynn pulled out a cigarette from the pocket of her jeans and put it between her lips, the tip beginning to smoke without the use of a lighter. Lynn was by no means perfect (end sentence), least of all in the art of concealing her emotions. In Lynn's experience, however, the more someone knew you was the more they could use against you. Lynn did not like what that nickname made her remember, but she was going to be damned if the Hollister anarchist saw her squirm. Especially -

Lynn blinked and looked back at her, genuine surprise splashed across her feelings. "Tagging?" She cocked her head and looked at Amelia, trying to figure out the colors of her outfit. "Who...who did you run with?" That certainly hadn't tracked. This girl had no tattoos. Maybe she was...no, Lynn could truly think of no gang that would take Amelia as she was. Maybe she screwed her way in, Lynn thought, which was among the lower echelons of respect one could occupy in Lynn's mind. Although something in her admitted that seemed unlikely, tempting an idea to indulge in as it was. Before Lynn could interrogate her further about her criminal history, she'd commented on her and Archie. Lynn began to bristle at that, but Denim had approached, and for once Lynn saw no reason to add fuel to the fire. She's testing you, Lynn thought. She's trying to size you up. She must be rattled. If she didn't see what happened to Archie she saw the footage. Or saw the fucking hole in the cafeteria wall. No need for them to know how many gallons of oil were involved. Still, Lynn didn't like this shit one bit. She had Amelia trying to needle her apart and figure out what made her tick over here, Archie and Natalie skulking over in the shadows, and Denim showing up a little too unprompted.

Something clicked in Lynn's mind. Amelia went after that steel toed boot guy. She went running after him. He'd been the one to set Archie off, interrupt the headmaster, and cause this whole ruckus. Lynn did not for one minute believe he was operating independently of the Promise's authority. No, this was a chance for them to...to what? Their security forces had looked like a total joke, they'd been out of place. It'd been up to her and Natalie -

Lynn stared away, zoning out of the conversation for a moment. Her cigarette was half consumed.

It was a fucking hit. On me and Spoons. And if we took out Archie in the process, all the better.

So simple. They'd spared her the needle to make her an example for all the goody-two-shoes who grew up at private schools with mommy and daddy. Lynn's hair began to turn white, her blue eyes flecked with white dots as well. Well, it only took me a week to figure out your scheme, Lynn thought. And I turned it pretty well on its ass.

Then Denim had to go and mention the flowers. Was she trying to test her too? Lynn was sick of this shit. "Didn't have them when he came to me," Lynn said quickly. "I - " then this girl mentioned Freaky D coming by her. Yeah, that was the tap dancer's name. Lynn really did not know what to think now. Had Lynn ever sat down to play Clue, she would've felt very much like the player with the fewest clues a turn before the game ends. I do not like this one bit. Why does he come by her? How does Amelia know this prick? And what in the name of fuck are those two still talking about? Lynn did not possess anything bordering emotional intelligence. She didn't know exactly what she felt about Natalie and Archie plotting. Not betrayal, because Lynn wasn't dumb enough to get betrayed, but - well, she had expected a basic level of camaraderie between them, given recent events, and this was a quick turnaround. That wasn't getting betrayed, which only happened to idiots, that was just expecting someone to not be a complete douchebag. Lynn had sobered quickly to the quality of people on the Promise. You try to give people a chance to be decent and this is what they do. Jesus.

Lynn turned back to Keaton. Fuck this skull and dagger crap. "We're not all really friends," Lynn said. "Don't really know each other." This one was older, and Lynn didn't think she was here under the needle either. Gears whirled in her head. The fact was that everyone here was a threat in the way everyday people hadn't been back home, but trying to figure out how they were a threat was the challenge. Could they throw her through the airlock door like Spoons, or could they screw with her mind and make her terrified of stuff that wasn't there? Lynn briefly considered the idea there were telepaths on this space station. I don't care about probation, I'm whipping their ass if I find them.

"Yeah, I - " Lynn froze as Archie screamed. The cigarette between her teeth charred to ash in a moment and her short hair sparked like aluminum foil in a microwave before glowing yellow, her eyes matching. A faint smell of smoke curled up off her, but not enough to singe her clothes. "Oh if I have to kill that motherfucking lizard again," Lynn said, moving towards the woods. Her hands were curled up into fists. Your back is to those two. Not that it matters with the teleporter. You don't know what the other one can do, but there's no getting around that. Maybe she can only talk to squirrels or something. Spoons is to the right - she's not going to throw the first punch, she's scared. You need to hit whatever it is fast before Archie roids out again, and before anyone -

Lynn came over to Archie and saw the corpse. Lynn immediately looked around for what caused it, but she knew it was in vain. This body wasn't fresh. There was nothing in the trees and nothing in the water she could see. Curiosity pulled her a half step closer. White. Brown hair. Blue eyes. No tattoos. A staff uniform. His face was all kinds of fucked up. This body was ditched here. Lynn noted. The body didn't bother the sixteen year old. She'd seen them before. Like this? Carved up and tortured in the face? Some part of her felt nauseous, but it was the faraway part, the part that didn't know what to think about flowers or couldn't sleep at night sometimes. That part that was easy to tell to shut the fuck up when her hair was glowing and her knuckles close to splitting. Somebody wanted this guy to suffer.

Lynn was no one's fool. Archie finds this body as Denim approaches? As Amelia follows the tap dancer?

"Archie," Lynn said, grabbing his arm and pulling him backward. Her fingers were warm, on the verge of being hot, but not painfully so. Not yet. "Get the fuck out of here. Did you touch him? Did you leave prints? Hair?" She took her free hand and pulled her own hood up. Inside her hood jumped some dozen degrees as she did this, and Lynn forced her temperature back down to keep from charring the inside of her sweatshirt. They are not pinning this shit on me. Lynn glanced around again. They're always watching, she realized. All it takes is that AI fabricating some voice recordings and I'm out the airlock. Damn them. Damn them.

A part of Lynn pieced something together. She didn't think any of these, excluding potentially Spoons - but she really didn't think so - had seen some real, real shit. Or done real shit. Cesar, Lynn thought briefly, intrusively, before forcing that out, with the part of her that was trying to think of how painful it was to have your face carved like that. What she was thinking was that they weren't realizing what she was. This wasn't a dealer who went to the wrong street corner or a drunk moron who slapped the wrong girl's ass. This guy had made somebody real, real mad, and she was willing to bet that uniform was put on them as a sign.

The people who did that kind of thing were fine killing kids. Only kids who saw too much. If her Freaky D as a false flag theory was right, this was the Ruby to the Oswald. "Get the fuck up. Get up and walk away. C'mon." Lynn's tone was hard and serious. Lynn kept her hand on Archie's arm, trying to feel if it was getting bigger, but that was hard to tell, given that her small hands couldn't fit around his arm to begin with. Lynn turned back to the others. One of them had to be involved. Who? Spoons was waiting here at the river, as was Amelia. But Denim had known exactly where to find them.

She looked back down at Archie.

And all that assumes, she realized, He really can't control his little lizard problem.

Lynn kept her hand on his arm like a vise. One should keep friends close and enemies closer. Cordelia Lynn Holmes had only the latter.

Amelia

Amelia grinned as Keaton explained that she had made a Freaky D sighting in the hospital. "Oh, really, huh? You ran into Freaky D? Don't suppose you know where he's storing all of his spray paint, do you? I still need to get my hands on some to do my own tagging." At Lynn's comment, she gave a look of confusion. "Run....with? I mean, I don't know what you're talking about, but I was by myself." Amelia flipped her sketchbook around, showing Lynn a series of planned 'improvements' to the decor. "Just good old fashioned street art. Stuff in alleys, on walls. I admit to putting the occasionally dick on a billboard of a politician. Low class, I know. Buuuuuuuuuut it's still funny."

Amelia was enjoying her time with this little band of misfits. I mean, they had all the archetypes right here. The bad boy, the denim chick, the shy weirdo, the girl who doesn't take shit from anyone. And her, the tagging anarchist, filled out the ranks. It might be harder to cause trouble, but she was certainly in the right group for it. She made a noise of amusement at Lynn's comment how they weren't friends. "Yeah, sure. Whatever makes you feel better Lynn. But let it be known. By the end of the month. You. Me. If not friends, at the very least tolerable acquaintances. Calling it now."

Amelia's enjoyment of the evening died as she shot up, instincts on high alert as Archie screamed. Archie. Screaming. Archie she thought to herself. Shit must be serious. Amelia let the others take the lead, out of practice of course, before suddenly teleporting to the front of the back once she was behind them all.

She arrived just as Lynn was pulling Archie away. Amelia, ever the curious sort, moved past them to get a look. And then she froze. All of the color went from her face right then and there as she froze in shock.

Amelia had seen this man before. When he was alive.

Amelia SCREAMED.

She fell back on her ass, rapidly scrambling away from the body as rapidly as a floundering fish. "Oh god, its him its him its HIM. Why is he here, why is he here?!?! Amelia scrambled to her feet, spinning around in desperation, practiced eyes trying to catch sight of the woman who she knew was responsible. "Fuck fuck FUCK. She's following me, why is she following me!?!? Amelia froze with indecision for a few moments, not sure what to do. And then well practiced instinct kicked in.

Amelia BOLTED for the tree line. She wanted to break line of sight, she needed to break line of sight to escape the woman she was sure had left this here for her.

Natalie Ellis

When Archie had gone off, Natalie respected his wished and started to return to the group, before watching Archie head into the forest. He had told her to go on ahead and go back to the others, but what was he up to in the forest? After some thinking, she decided not to follow him, and return to the group. If he'd wanted her to go with him, he'd have said so. Natalie started to walk back, but didn't join the group properly. They were fully in the throes of a conversation and she didn't want to interrupt that by forcing herself.

That's when she heard a scream. A terrified, male scream. Flashbacks started playing in her head, her eyes went wide, her pupils dilated. She braced herself against a wall and started counting backwards from fifty. A little trick that calmed her down. Even though it prevented her from snapping, she was anything but calm right now. The other girl had ran off ahead of them, and she followed. She heard another scream, this one from one of the girls, and started to sprint.

When Natalie arrived, she saw the group all standing, nobody was hurt, but they were panicky., As she got closer she saw the body, and froze. It wasn't just dead. It was mutilated. The chest was caved in. It was just like...just like...

Natalie, naked, turned from the carnage she had just created in the operating theatre and crashed through the door. She could see the fear in the eyes of the scientists and security outside. She saw one of them going for his assault rifle. He was going to shoot her! She was in danger! She silently ran at him before he could raise it, and...

The group would see Natalie turn from the body, run right up to a nearby tree, punch her fist straight through it, and tear it in half with an animal-like ferocity. She kept low, as if dodging gunfire, and then scarpered along the ground to another tree, which she grabbed and pulled, ripping it clean out of the ground, roots and all. It was then that a branch hit her in the face and she dropped it, now standing straight and stock still, before collapsing to her knees and lowering her head.

Both guards were dead. She was still holding the disembodied torso of one of them. She glared at the scientists. They had tortured her for two years. Finally, she had the power. She had the power and all they could do was run and scream. Natalie turned to them and started to...leaves? Why could she feel leaves on her face?

She was in the woods. She had been holding a tree. It was over. Project Lion was over. She took a deep gasping breath, and collapsed to her knees. She couldn't turn around. She couldn't stand to look at that body again. She was scared to even move. She noticed after a few seconds that her body was shaking, and tears were streaming down her face.

D was on his merry way. To meet his end. Couldn’t you see how excited he was?

The two guards were dragging him by his arms. His legs dragged on the ground as if he were passed out. Radvi led them through the Promise’s inner workings - the cold, metal hallways that most students would never see. Nary a soul was around to watch them as they went to commit a blatant murder. But even if they were, who would object?

Gennedy’s orders. Get this fool off the station.

As they went, D’s helmet sounded some, making a few low whirs and static noises. After a bit of that, he went silent again. Moments later…

“A long, long time ago…
I can still remember how that,
Music used to make me smile…”

“Oh for-” One of the guards dragging him said, “I thought his helmet was broken?”

“And I knew if I had my chance,
That I could make those people dance and,
Maybe they’d be happy, for a while…”

“Quiet!” The guard said angrily, proceeding to hit D’s helmet several times in an attempt to kill the music. The other guard dragging the other arm interrupted him and said, “Hey, hey, c’mon. At least this is a good song.”

“Fuck’s sake…” The first guard said in defeat, ceasing his beating of D’s helmet.

Radvi didn’t say anything. All he noticed was that the music didn’t sound like it was coming from D’s helmet, but his chest rather. A secondary sound system? How’d he even activate it without the use of his hands? Questions he wouldn’t be getting any answers to, it seemed. No point in further interrogating someone who had already been condemned to a cold, airless death.

“But February made me shiver,
With every paper I delivered,
Bad news on the doorstep,
I couldn’t take, one more step…”

They rounded a corner.

“I can’t remember if I cried when I,
Read about his widowed bride…
But something touched me deep inside,
The day…
The music~, died…”

They were approaching the airlock at the end of the hallway.

“So bye, bye, Miss American Pie,
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry…
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye,
Singin’ ‘this’ll be the day that I die’...”

They opened the airlock.

“This’ll be the day that I, die…”

They forced him into the chamber. The moment he was free of their hold, he shot right back up as the song kicked into its beat, straight back to his merry self from a mere hour ago, seemingly free of injuries. And then, he danced.

“Did you write the book of love?
And do you have faith in God above?
If the bible tells you so?”

D pointed upwards with both of his hands as the airlock door closed. He then proceeded to begin playing an air guitar.

“Ah, do you believe in rock n’ roll?
Can music - save your mortal soul, and,
Can you teach me, how to dance, real~ slow~?”

Radvi and one of the other guards simply watched the fool dance as the third guard rested his hand on the ‘VENT AIRLOCK’ button. And unamused at the idea of listening any further, he went ahead and pressed it.

“Well I-”

The outside door quickly opened, interrupting D in the middle of his jig and releasing him out into the great dark nothingness of space, aimed away from both the station and Earth proper. His body would float forever in that direction, never to be found. The three guards watched for only a moment before the airlock’s outside door closed back up. And with their assigned task seen to, they elected to leave. Radvi, of course, hesitated. He thought of how this could have all been handled better, but… it seemed pointless to dwell on, ultimately.

And so he left too.

Some minutes after they had all left, and the coast was well and clear…

Oh, as the players tried to take the field…

An air vent on the ceiling swung open, hanging on its hinges. And from it, down dropped D. A new D, still onboard the Promise, while his predecessor continued to float out into the emptiness of space. His lights all slowly went out, while his successor’s were bright and alive.

The marching band refused to yield…

D - the new one - stood and saluted the airlock door.

Do you recall what was revealed,
The day…
The music~ died~?

Keaton Plasse

Amelia’s comments on Freaky-D placed her as one of his fans, though more on the admirer side than a die-hard fan. Just like Amelia, though, Keaton found herself confused by Lynn’s comments, unable to connect one thought to the next to understand Lynn’s flow of thought. Still, Lynn’s statement that the group weren’t friends was realistic, if not a bit mean-spirited. It marked her as a realist and as someone who wasn’t afraid to cut ties, which confused Keaton. Looking purely at her actions, Keaton had placed her as a more caring individual, so was this all a harsh front?

A scream cut Lynn’s next sentence off, causing her to bolt away for the sound. Keaton quickly followed, Amelia hanging back for some reason. At the scene, Lynn’s reaction pointed out where Keaton should look, and the second it took for her brain to register what she was seeing was a second it took to start answering questions. Man, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, probably squeezed by some extraordinary force. Broken legs but not arms, to prevent running but not begging. Fingernails and fingers removed, pliers and shears, or at least something with similar applications.

Keaton stumbled back, her hand shooting up to clutch her mouth as the sour taste of vomit started, her stomach heaving. With her power’s relative autonomy came its tendency to turn itself on, and though she’d managed high school biology’s dissections alright, looking at the broken body now, the smell of rotting flesh indicating at least half a day of decay, she took another few steps back, fighting the tingling need to heave out her stomach contents.

Vaguely registering Amelia’s presence, Keaton inhaled and exhaled through her sleeve, trying to get air without the stench of death. As she calmed, she looked around for the others, who’d by now scattered to various corners of the park. Lynn was with the boy, who thankfully hadn’t transformed into a lizard. More control now? Uncertain, but there were the caring actions from Lynn again despite her statement that the group weren’t friends. Was it self-preservation, considering the boy’s lizard problem, or something more?

Whatever the case, Amelia’s scream cut through Keaton’s thoughts as her brain latched onto the girl’s babbling statements. She knew the man, knew him from Earth? The ship? Either way, she knew she had the possibility of being followed but hadn’t thought herself that big of a mark. She was wrong, or so she thought she was. Someone on the ship was torturing people to extract information, torturing people and dumping bodies without a care for whether they’d be found.

A new bout of sickness washed over Keaton, this time due to dread. She’d approached these people thinking they’d be just another crowd, but now she’d just associated herself with a girl who might be a walking target. If the killer was anywhere as ruthless in her hunting as she was with her killing, Keaton was involved now, like it or not. She was now a target.

Lynn's voice broke him out of his stupor and he was yanked backwards and away by his arm. She was warm, borderline hot and was a jolting contrast from the cooling night air. She was questioning him now, trying to find out if he had touched the body, or done anything to it. "No, no. God-" he just about choked out, trying to find his words. "I was going to look for flowers for Natalie and Amelia to apologize and I saw-" his eyes flashed over to the body again. Lynn seemed to sense this, or at least he thought she did. Archie was pulled again, this time to his feet away away. His arm hurt from the heat of her hands and from how tight she was holding him. He looked away from the body and at Lynn. Archie's eyes were stark white and were producing a sort of bioluminescence, just like they had when he had gone under last time.

"Get the fuck up. Get up and walk away. C'mon." Lynn's tone was commanding, and he followed her instructions. She had gotten to him a little late and her smaller stature might've play into her not immediately noticing the signs, but he stood easily six inches taller than he normally did. Or maybe she did, and this was simply her way of trying to calm him down before he made a mess. She forced him to face the tree line, away from the body. He caught sight of Natalie who was destroying trees in what could have been frustration? Anger? He knew how that felt. Amelia screamed and the high pitched fear reverberated painfully in his head. He groaned and brought his hands up to his ears, just about lifting Lynn off the ground as he did so. He could sense that there was a new person here from the scent of bile in her throat. All the more reason not to turn, Archie thought. He didn't want to sour any more relations. He had been lucky that Lynn and Natalie had been so forgiving. This new person might now.

Not again. Archie thought. He wasn't going to turn again and make them do what they had to do on the first day. Not after he had just promised them that he wouldn't hurt them again. He had stopped the transformation as it was, having successfully convinced himself that he wasn't being bodily threatened. He felt his muscles relax again, and he winced as his spine audibly cracked back into place in a few locations and his height reduced.

"I'm- I'm okay. I promise." he said, putting his hand around Lynn's arm in an attempt to get her to loosen her grip. His eyes were still bright white, but he was coming down and that's what mattered. His senses were still in hyperdrive though, and he heard Amelia coming from behind before he saw her. She was cursing to herself, about how someone was following her. Once again he felt like he was a passenger in his own body as he centered himself on instinct. He leveraged his and Lynn's (admittedly low contribution to their) weight so that when the free arm shot out on its own accord and snatched Amelia just about out of the air as she passed, they barely moved. Amelia's momentum was instantly stopped and she was put down on her ass again, this time by Archie. He held onto her with an iron grip, not so much so that it hurt her but enough so that his hand did not move.

Archie felt his control return and he relaxed, instantly releasing Amelia's arm. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Are you oka-" He caught himself, processing what she had been yelling about. It's him? She's following her?

"Who is following you? What do you mean it's him?" he asked earnestly, concern written into his features. They were far enough away from the river bank that he was afforded enough clarity that he could force himself to ignore the body that less than a hundred feet from them. He didn't remember Amelia leaving on the first day, but Lynn and Natalie might. How was Amelia related to this body?

Lynn

Lynn was pissed. Amelia had implicated herself in all the shit that was going down - you brought all this to me, I was going to keep my fucking head down, but you brought this - and immediately tried to run off to narc to whoever her handler was. Spoons had found some large, tree-shaped spoons to bend, which was doing wonders for keeping whoever did this from noticing there were witnesses. Archie had grown a foot, which as previously mentioned, really only increased the already insurmountable height advantage most people had on Lynn, but it had the unfortunate effect of making her feet dangle a few inches off the ground. This undercut any pretense of authority Lynn previously possessed. Historically speaking, most had realized that it was unwise to point this out to her. Last but not least there was Denim, who was hyperventilating but covering her face up, standing still. Before Archie had started to grow bigger he'd mentioned picking flowers, which made Lynn's eyes narrow further and the temperature of her body jump up a few more degrees. That graffiti-spraying idiot was right, Lynn fumed (literally). She knew Archie wasn't as dumb as he looked. Cesar would be proud.

Lynn looked around at this clownfuckery. All of them were acting like it was the first time they'd seen a dead body. Jesus. Any one of them was going to bring the heat down on all of them, which notably meant also bringing the heat down on Lynn, who did not fancy getting assigned Spoons' old necklace. Spoons was making enough chaos to alert the cops back on Earth, Amelia couldn't have looked more guilty if she was running away in a white Bronco at ten miles per hour, and Archie was about to kill them all. To Denim's credit, she was at least standing still and quiet, although she looked too scared to move. You're all acting like a bunch of children, Lynn wanted to scream.

Lynn paused.

She took a deep, deep breath. Lucy. The oldest sister at the Johnsons. First house. What was the sort of thing Lucy would always do when shit like this was happening?

Lynn forced her glow to dimmer down, the air temperature immediately around her and Archie dropping back to normal and Lynn's hair settling to a faintly pulsing red. She kept her tone steady and sharp but tried to keep from shouting, which was difficult, because any one of them, namely Amelia's conspiratorial ass, was going to get her killed. Lucy always kept her voice calm and didn't try to yell over them. Her logic was it just made everybody yell more. Lynn hoped the same principle applied to de-escalating superpowered teenagers.

"All of you - " she started, biting her tongue. She was planning on saying Stop acting like you're in first class and see the South Tower on the horizon but decided that was most decidedly not what Lucy would have said to the other girls. "Look - you - " she bit her lip and forced herself not to absolutely lose her shit on these kids. They're kids. Treat them like kids. They're just Clarita and Megan. "Spoons, keep crying and sitting there. You're gonna be fine." Lynn realizing the callousness of this statement seemed unlikely. "Archie, I want you to sit down and sit on your hands. Sit on them. Right now." She had no idea what the fuck that would accomplish but it seemed like it would occupy his non-lizard brain for a minute, and buy her a half second of time if he snapped. She turned over to Denim. Keat? Keats? Ketty? Was Ketty a name? "Denim," Lynn said. "You are the star fucking pupil of the day. Stay there. Keep breathing. Try not to throw up on your second jacket." Lynn let go of Archie - notably not when he tried to pry her off, because Lynn did not do things because people wanted her to do them, and would not brook any insinuations she did - and moved over to Amelia, grabbing her by the other wrist. Lynn let enough heat to serve as a pleasant reminder come back into her hand. "If any of you would like a cigarette, I suggest you get one." she pulled out her pack with her free hand and threw it to the ground, apparently forgetting no one else could light them with a literal snap of their fingers.

Lynn did not like this one bit. If she had free rein, she would've been looking through Amelia's teeth for some kind of dental forensics that might point to some answers. Unfortunately, Lynn figured violence was just going to make any of the others lose their minds, and there was a one in three chance that doing so resulted in getting her ass beat by a giant lizard. This left the girl who could throw a tree at Lynn's head at the speed of sound and the mystery girl who shows up as soon as they find the corpse. These were not what Lynn considered ideal possible outcomes. At least, Lynn thought, You tried. She was not exactly succeeding at being the older sister figure. Well, Lucy got pregnant like four years later anyway. For a brief, bewildering moment, Lynn realized Lucy was younger when she got knocked up than she was at this present moment. That startled her, but she pushed it aside for the moment. She tried to force herself to see them all as about ten years younger, which made their behavior more excusable. Denim's older than me, Lynn thought. Why's she even nauseous? That wasn't that bad. Just make it go away. That was what Che had taught them, after all. You just made it go away and you could do anything.

However, there were too many coincidences here for Lynn to fully believe what her better judgment - which sounded increasingly and suspiciously like her court-ordered therapist - was saying, that their behavior was excusable. Amelia, at least, had information, and while they were far too close to the scene of the crime for Lynn's liking, she wasn't going to give the teleporter a chance to weasel away. Lynn figured at least they were all dying that way.

"I too," Lynn said, not breaking eye contact with Amelia, "Have questions." Lynn figured she had a chance of tanking a hit from the lizard or Spoons. Denim, who the hell knew. But if Amelia decided to blink the both of them into outer space, kick Lynn towards the nearest black hole, and blink back inside, she was going to make sure she was reading her copy of Snitches Weekly in Braille for the rest of her life. Lynn forced her tone to stay steady. This was such a mess. Either she didn't find out why this girl knew so much about the corpse, and they put her under the needle for breaking probation by being involved with a murder on her first week, or she got the straight truth a fist at a time and Archie and Spoons turned her into a well-cooked mound of bloody paste. Archie was still a good eight inches too tall for Lynn's liking. Spoons was probably one bloody nose away from snapping again, but she seemed to have collapsed, so she was probably fine for a while. Amelia certainly wasn't running with any gangs. "And would love to hear some answers. None of us are going anywhere until you tell us what's up, and also importantly, none of us are going to say shit about this dead body when we do leave here." Lynn glanced around briefly. "Which should be soon. Start talking."

Amelia

If anyone thought Amelia couldn't freak out more then she already was, they'd quickly be proven wrong as Archie reached out and grabbed her. She frantically kicked at his chest as she was picked up, aiming for something, anything that would force him back and her out of his grip. Unfortunately, there was only so much she could do before she was pinned to the ground. Her look of panic didn't break, even as Archie released her, and she instinctively teleported back against one of the trees, pressed up against it.

Amelia had a look of animalistic fear in her eyes as Archie and Lynn interrogated her, and glanced around looking for a way to bail. Unfortunately for Amelia's instinct to just flee from her problems, there seemed to be no way she was breaking line of sight successfully. Without being free from the eyes of an observer, Amelia could only go a few yards, and that was not worth the minimal gain here. Amelia took a few deep breaths, trying to recall her experience in getting out of shitty situations. Her best bet here would probably be to talk. Besides, they might all be targets now anyway.

"I....on the first day, when everything went to shit. I didn't know that Archie here would go full Godzilla after the kick, so I went running after Freaky D. I...I'm kind of a fan of his work. His street art has inspired quite a bit of my own tags back on Earth. So I figured I tried to bail him out, get him away from the staff."

Amelia cleared her throat, her eyes beginning to fill with the first of tears. "We had a close call in the bathroom, so I figured I'd try and get us some breathing room by teleporting to random classrooms." She thought hard for a minute. "It was.....it was A.P. Bio I think. I warped us into the closet there, and we fell into the room and...and..." The tears were starting to stream now. Amelia clenched her fists hard and bit down on her lip, drawing blood. "And we saw that guy back there tied to a chair and bloody, and this other woman standing over him. She wasn't wearing the staff uniform. He was. I think...I think she was torturing him." Amelia bit back a sob. "At that point, D jumped out the window, and I dove back in the closet and teleported back to the cafeteria where the end of that shit was going on. Since then I've tried to keep my head down and stay away from her if I saw her, but now his body is here, right when I decide to hang out around here, and there's no way that's a coincidence!"

Natalie Ellis

Natalie stood up. The initial emotional shock, the trigger of seeing a mutilated corpse was subsiding, and it was being replaced by Natalie's sharp survival instincts. As she listened in on the Amelia's story, she realized that there was a malicious killer on this station with them, hiding in the shadows. Natalie didn't believe this body was a message for Amelia. She, nor any of the group, would had found it had Archie not gone into the forest to pick apology flowers. No, it had been disposed. It may have wound up in this river by accident. It may have been stored for a week and then put here for anybody to find.

Natalie took her new phone out of her pocket and pressed the Cara app. She lifted it to her mouth and spoke, quietly as if Lynn heard her, Natalie got the feeling she'd want to hush this up, and that would just cause suspicion. None of them had done anything wrong. And Natalie was not used to having the advantage of not being the guilty party so she was sure going to make the most of it. They had ways to test for this stuff, and even if the group were suspected, Archie clearly hadn't transformed so given the body's injuries, Natalie would be the only suspect. The others had nothing to worry about.

"Cara? It's Natalie. There's a dead body in the river at the edge of the forest. Uhh. Is that not specific enough? Can you trace my phone?"

"Your phone has been traced and Security and Medical staff are both on route to your location. Thank you for bringing this to my attention."

Natalie put her phone back in her pocket and returned to the group. She figured she should let them know, lest Lynn think she's a snitch, or...whatever Lynn would think.

"Guys, I let Cara know about this, but didn't tell her there was a group of us. If anybody wants to leave, I suggest you do it now and carry on talking somewhere else. I'm gonna stay here. To be honest, my advice is we all stay and wait for staff but I thought you should make your own minds up."

Keaton Plasse

Keaton stared as Lynn as she maneuvered around the scene, struck by how used the girl was to the situation. Though she’d changed her new definition of normal many times the past week, nothing about this situation was part of what she thought she had to factor in. Still, Lynn was the most stable of the group at this point, considering the state of the others. While Keaton’s eyes kept getting drawn to Archie, who looked like he was on the edge of transforming despite her gut telling her differently. Her trust in her powers had been unconscious for most of her life, but after learning about it, the possibility of error seemed to loom above her. Though her power was knowing what was correct, and though she’d never been wrong before, who was to say she couldn’t be? Relying on confirmations without clear reasoning was a lot scarier now that she was aware of it, and though she defaulted to trust, she couldn’t help but think of the ways that trust could lead her to injury, or worse.

Archie and Lynn seemed to have stopped Amelia in her tracks, and Lynn was now questioning her, demanding that she start talking. As she did, Keaton straightened shakily, trying to focus on Amelia’s words. She was telling the truth about the first day, but she went after Freaky-D? That was news to Keaton. She confirmed that she was a fan of the helmet, as Keaton had deduced earlier, and she thought her powers were good for escaping. Her powers were related to movement. What kind of movement though? Was that why she’d caught up to Keaton so quickly?

Amelia continued, though, with her story. AP Bio—that said little. Just an empty class, a convenient place, most likely. ‘Warp’—so she was a warper, a teleporter. She’d seen the man before he’d died, the exact man, or so she thought. According to her story, she’d gotten away. Everything lined up. Except her last statement—it was a coincidence. Keaton knew that from earlier, knew that from the fact that the body had been dumped in the river like some getaway murderer off a crime show. The water removed evidence, destroyed evidence, and it had nothing to do with Amelia.

“It’s a coincidence,” Keaton said, interrupting. She looked around at the group, meeting their eyes. “My power—I think things, guess things. And I know when I’m right. And that body, it was dumped in the river for easy disposal, not for you to find.”

She paused, mostly because it felt right. This was the first time she’d told someone about her powers willingly. Usually it was just the doctors or scientists, the forms and papers, but here, with a dead body not twenty feet away, she’d given it away. Did it matter? Not to them, probably, but to her, it was new. At first it’d been an intrinsic, unnamed part of her, then a secret she didn’t know what to do with. Now it was known, and she felt oddly light.

That was when Natalie arrived with news that she’d informed the authorities. Keaton stared at her, momentarily stunned. That’d always been an option, but usually the people that called in got investigated first. Plus, the man was wearing a Promise uniform. If the ship authorities weren’t safe from the woman, what made her think alerting them would be a good idea?

Lynn

Lynn's anger at Amelia simmered off into something closer to disgust. Unsurprisingly, Amelia just wanted to play at being criminal. The guy kicked a kid in the face with a steel-toed boot and you went chasing for his autograph, Lynn wanted to scream at her. That was decidedly un-Lucy of her, but it was there. Lynn wanted to ask if she'd ever been kicked with a steel-toed boot, or if she'd care to experience, but -

But that would not help. Lynn closed her eyes and grinded her teeth with the sort of intensity that normally reduced enamel to dust. She had to focus. She would have time to customize an ass-beating for each one of them later but right now they needed to focus, get their story straight, and get clear. Lynn did not have high hopes that any of them would manage to keep quiet and avoid narc'ing for much longer than a few days, but that was a few days to come up with alibis and whatnot. Maybe somebody else would get pinned for it in the meantime and they'd be in the clear.

Lynn wanted to laugh at that.

Lynn also, as a sign of how serious the situation was, neglected to comment on Amelia diving back into the closet, although the temptation did occur to her. Lynn searched her instincts about Amelia. She knew there was something fishy about some of these fuckers, but she couldn't pin down what. Amelia's story seemed to check out. If she was involved in all this, why would she make running away so obvious? Beyond that, Lynn didn't think Amelia had the stomach for it. She was taking the love scratches on the cadaver a little seriously. Everyone was, but she had to admit that Amelia's reaction - of sprinting away before remembering she could teleport, seemingly (Lynn, unsurprisingly, not having the tightest grasp on the quantum mechanics behind Amelia's abilities) - didn't really track with someone who was in on this conspiracy. Her gut instinct on meeting Amelia had been that this girl had not ever seen any real shit. Lynn's standards for real shit were, also unsurprisingly, pretty specific to whatever Lynn herself had personally endured, but this was tracking. She's a weak link, Lynn thought, And I think fifteen minutes in a police room would get a confession out of her, but I don't think she's in on this. There was always the chance Lynn was wrong. Lynn was very willing to assume there were errors in her logic so long as it allowed her to continue her suspicions of someone. So she wasn't clearing Amelia, per se, but she loosened up her grip on Amelia and stood up. "What'd this Jigsaw bitch look like?" Lynn asked, her tone still sharp and clear. Keep channeling Lucy, Lucy always knew what to do. Lynn, by virtue of a number of tough scrapes, had a knack for keeping cool in crisis situations. People who froze up in a street fight or panicked and ran when there were gunshots did not tend to have the opportunity to improve their skills in future encounters.

Of course, the debilitating drawback was that Lynn could never really turn it off. When she slept. When she walked around. When a car honked suddenly or someone shouted out of nowhere.

Lynn stood, her mind whirring. Smoke drifted out of her ears absentmindedly, so faint as to be barely perceptible to someone without augmented vision. Torturing this guy? That made sense, Lynn supposed. No law enforcement up here, and no real way of getting contact down to earth. Between the Big Brother AI and whatever system they had to get internet and stuff here, Lynn figured they had a pretty ironclad system of censorship on communications. Lynn had figured this was the next base thing to a FEMA camp when they'd strapped her into the shuttle, but Lynn had not been blessed with a myriad of options for her life at that point. Add in a bunch of kids and no lawyers and no protection and -

Lynn was shaking. She was going to tear that AP Bio bitch's throat out. They could make kids go missing even easier than this poor fucker. Little girls. Foster kids. Juvy kids. Kids with no moms or dads or case workers or -

Keaton spoke and Lynn blinked. She was back in the woods with the others. "I - the fuck?" Lynn said, staring at Keaton. Denim had those Dustin Hoffman powers from that movie. She stared at her, bewildered. Lynn had no idea you could even have powers like that. Everybody she'd known back on Earth had had, like, directly applicable shit. There was a guy who could move things with his mind, just barely, who got his ass beat by casino staff for fudging die rolls. Another guy could make enough electricity to tase you, but it left him in a coma for the rest of the day. But this mind stuff? Lynn wondered what Denim could tell about her from just looking at her. Did she know anything about Lynn? Lynn felt naked in front of her, like they'd tied that hospital gown back around her, flimsy in the cool breeze. Regardless, it explained how she'd found them out here, Lynn guessed, and that might be useful figuring out what was going on here - although Lynn wanted to know more about what she could do with that. There was a non-zero chance Keaton didn't have these powers, and was just saying this to go along with the narrative. That would track. Maybe she and Amelia are both in on this. I hadn't considered that. They both bounced as soon as Archie started to get scaly. Maybe they knew.

Lynn glanced back at Amelia. It was possible. But not particularly likely, she was forced to admit.

"Okay, what we need to - " Lynn stopped as Natalie spoke. Her words almost didn't register. There was a ringing in her ears from somewhere. Lynn's hair was blazing, short-cropped and ragged though it was in the week since Archie's freakout. Lynn was ten feet closer to Natalie before she had processed what the girl had said. There was no way to make the words in her head coalesce into something that could come out of her mouth, she could only grab her and make her understand the magnitude of what the fuck she had done, Christ, she was stupid, so stupid, to have even gotten into this situation with Dipshit Flower Boy and the others, hadn't she learned?

Lynn stopped, standing in place. Heat roiled off of her, the few inches around her hot as an oven. Lynn's eyes glowed like charcoals someone had dowsed in lighter fluid as she looked up at Natalie, still about ten more feet away. There was some faraway part of her that was keeping her foot rooted in place by telling her that if Lynn stayed here to roast this bitch like a Thanksgiving turkey, they would for sure get her, and they would get her for the dead body too, and she'd be strapped to a chair with a needle in her arm by the end of the week. Archie would flip out. They could pin this all on her. That was what they wanted. They wanted this scapegoat. The psychic had said they dumped it here. There was still a chance. There was still a tiny chance to walk away but -

Fuck that. I'm not a little bitch. Who does this overgrown Linkin Park album think she is? None of them get it. Not a single fucking one. And she doesn't think twice before calling the feds right to us? Right fucking to us? Like they won't be able to track the rest of us down? They're gonna put a cleaver in all their heads and put my prints on the knife. I've been here one week and she thinks she can do this to me. Fuck me over to get ahead. I should've known. I should've blown out that kitchen with her in it, I should've - Lynn could feel a throbbing pain in her right kneecap, like it was splitting open, and the sound of sirens. Lynn was shaking, visibly, from the anger. She was so close. She was on the right path. She wasn't getting caught up in any stupid shit. She was trying to keep her head down. Then Spoons has to ruin everything. Spoons. Spoons was the pain in her kneecap and the way that silver collar around her neck felt and the bloody Promise uniform on that dead body. Spoons was having to spend in a week in the hospital when everybody else got to walk away after two days. Spoons was all of that. Spoons was fucking dead.

"Natalie," she said. "You - " Lynn forced her mouth shut. She could feel her heart beating itself against her thin chest, like it wanted to get out and strangle her too. Witnesses. Three of them. You can melt her eyes like candle wax and one of the other three will get you down. Amelia will get away and get the cops. Natalie can punch you into the stratosphere if you do this. Archie will grab you from behind. Her face was cherry red, a literal vein pulsing on her forehead. Think logically through your actions, she could hear the counselor saying, When these moments of emotional stress come. We hold onto our anger because it makes us feel powerful in situations we cannot control. If Lynn stayed, she was confident she could kill Natalie. She might die. She'd definitely be arrested. And they'd kill her for breaking her probation terms. They might torture her. They might lock her up somewhere in this place and filet her like that man on the river. And all that might happen and there was the chance she might not get to kill Natalie first. That meant it wouldn't be worth it. That meant she would get the needle for nothing. Lynn was not a bitch, and Natalie had made them all look like bitches, but Lynn was not trying to die today.

"Natalie," Lynn said, a hairsbreadth more control measured in her voice. Her eyes were wide and not particularly focused on the other girl. "I am getting out of here, because I am not a complete fucking narc, and I do not want to die." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "If they ask you who else was here when you found the human cutting board, you think about what the cafeteria looked like when you walked out of the fucking freezer before you answer. You think real fuckin' hard." She stared up at Natalie, every single ounce of her desire to break her in half pouring into her glare. I was so close. You people are fucking ruining this for me. You're going to get me killed. You're going to get me arrested and killed because it's all a fucking game to you rich pricks. This is the same thing as before. Sons of bitches like you always do this. Always. A part of her felt cold and small, curled up beside a singed, sixty-five pound bag of potatoes in a musty storeroom. I saved you people. Lynn didn't care how strong she was. She didn't care if Natalie ripped her in half. She would get her. She would get her for this. All of my life you people have been trying to fuck me over and not a single one of you has gotten me in the dirt yet.

Lynn bit her tongue as hard she could, salt and iron filling her mouth. It gave her something to focus on. "Those of you who don't want to wind up like the river rat, you leave. I don't care if you come with me or not, but you don't fucking mention I was here." Lynn felt like explaining to them the specific ramifications of that course of actions, but stopped herself. She opened her mouth, closed it, and turned and walked away from Natalie at a quick but controlled pace. Her anger was there, oh it was there and it wanted to burn this forest down and let the feds try to figure out whose teeth were whose, but Lynn was walking and her more composed response to crises was coming back. You never ran. Running was what got you caught. Lynn kept her arms folded across her hoodie so she could get them up quickly if Natalie tried to jump her from behind like the coward snitch she was. There would be no fingerprints from Cordelia Lynn Holmes at the scene. She kept her hair burning to keep any of her hair from drifting out.

Lynn's list of people who needed a thorough and immediate ass-beating had expanded. There was whoever this Biology lady was, and there was Spoons.

With the morally negative business of sending that fool Freaky-D forward unto the infinite vastness of space, Radvi was sent back to doing late hour patrols along the Promise concourse. He was on his tri-wheel ATV once more, lower towards the brush but still somewhere along the walkways, just slowly cruising by and observing the goings on. He could honestly do without anymore trouble popping out of nowhere for the re-

”Agent Radvi?”

God damn it.

Radvi sighed, pulled his ATV to a complete stop, raised his hand to his communications earpiece, and responded to Cara’s request for his attention. “Copy, Cara, what is it?”

“I just received a distress call from a student, Ms. Natalie Ellis. Dr. Coleman has been found.”

That got his attention alright. “Wh-” He replied, stammering a bit, “Jesus Christ, where!?”

“About a quarter mile, left from the clinic by the river. I’m pinning her call location for you right now. Medical staff have also been alerted. Be prepared for relative hysterics- Dr. Coleman has allegedly expired.”

“Fuck!” Radvi blurted out, dropping comms and putting his ATV to speed, heading for the location showing up on the curved screen dashboard. Coleman had been missing for a whole week, ever since the orientation incident. No one could find any trace of him, and now he turns up dead in the river? And a student had found him before anyone else. Hardin - hell, pretty much all of the higher ups - weren’t going to be pleased with that development. He had to find this Natalie Ellis and ask her what all she saw.

Radvi didn’t want to admit it, but he felt it was true. This station was going to hell.

Archie

As soon as Lynn had released him, Archie had forgotten her instruction to sit on his hands almost immediately, instead bringing them up to his ears in an effort to drown out all the yelling as he came down. He blinked, trying to focus his eyes as the shine slowly died down. It was an odd feeling, for the darkness of the forest to return and for the colors to wash away into the shadows of the night. It dawned upon him that he had color night vision. He shook his head, trying to clear his senses and go back to his normal state now that he could no longer taste and smell the corpse a ways from them. He could focus again, and he was able to tune back into the conversations that were being held around him.

"...so I went running after Freaky D..."

So that's where Amelia had run off too. He hadn't seen her on the tapes and given the situation they were currently in he could understand her fear. He would feel this way, too if he had seen what she saw and then saw... this. He cast a glance over to the body, which hadn't moved much from its current spot. The new girl he had seen earlier spoke up that it was certainly a coincidence- that her power allowed her to know truths if she guessed them correctly. Useful he thought. A part of him was glad she was here instead of down on earth stealing social security numbers.

"Guys, I let Cara know about this..."

Now, this jolted Archie some. Primarily because it was the first thing that had happened since he came into the woods that made sense. Given everything that's happened, calling the police or whatever the equivalent was on this space ship was probably a good idea. It would at least clear their names from immediate suspicion. That was a good thing, right? Well, evidently not based on Lynn's reaction. Archie had pushed here and there to try and get closer to Lynn a few times now with little progress. She seemed to be warming up to him, and he was thankful for the baby steps they had made if anything. He could accept her honesty, and her compassion that she so desperately tried to pretend she didn't have. He had been on the receiving end of it twice now, after all. But it was becoming more and more obvious even to him how paranoid she was. Maybe it was justified, he was not and never would be a judgmental person so he couldn't for a second claim to know if it was or not, but it was hard to stomach sometimes. Especially now, given that Natalie had only been trying to help. They had just found a body for god's sake! This likely hadn't happened to any of them before.

Unless it had. Archie glanced between the aggressively postured Natalie and Lynn and briefly questioned whether either of them had seen dead people. He also considered getting between them, but decided against it. They had successfully stopped him before, and if the other guy had gone down to their combined might it was likely a better idea to not give them a common enemy. Lynn looked just about ready to explode when she threatened Natalie. Archie felt monumentally awkward in that moment, his mouth opening and closing like a fish when he tried to interject, but ultimately being unable to find the breath. Then Lynn announced that she was leaving, and told others to do so too, before stalking off herself.

Lynn had raised a solid point, he felt. Archie didn't want to end up like that man in the river. He had gathered that Lynn had it rougher than him. That much was certain, but despite his apprehension all that he could think about was what Natalie had said to him earlier that very evening. I think we should look out for each other from now on.

Archie gulped. He was a man of his word. He looked onto Lynn's retreating form, now a dim light in the trees that was fading rapidly as she booked it out of forest. He turned back to Natalie, who was facing him now that Lynn had departed. He cleared his throat.

"I'm staying," he began, more to himself than anyone else. He steeled himself for whatever was to come. He knew she wouldn't rat Lynn out, but she had left before Amelia had even told her about what this AP Bio murderer even looked like, so he decided that he would find her again once he knew more even if she'd kill him for it. His eyes met Natalie's and he finished his earlier words. "We should look out for each other."

Keaton Plasse

However surprised Keaton was at Natalie’s statement, Lynn was all that and more, and Keaton quickly backed up when the temperature started rising. Though she had a working theory that Lynn cared about the people around her despite her words pointing to the contrary, she didn’t put it past the girl to blow up again. She’d done it once, and—considering her temper—she could do it again.

Thankfully, Lynn managed to rein herself. How, Keaton wasn’t sure, but she wasn’t about to question it either. Her tone spooked Keaton since though they came from the thin girl who’d just been in the hospital for a week, said girl had blown up a cafeteria without taking too much of a long-term dent. Still, the prospect of sticking around and finding out how fast the police were compared to the killer wasn’t appealing in the slightest. At best, the killer had no ties to the staff other than an urge to strap them to chairs and beat the living hell out of them; at worst, she had access to information, which would explain her confidence in her ability to move around in the system and pull off murder. Keaton needed no gut feeling to tell her that a killer operating somewhere like The Promise had something up their sleeves, and she wasn’t looking to find out what that something was.

After sparing another glance at Natalie and the boy who’d sided with her, Keaton followed after Lynn’s surprisingly fast pace. Leaving the scene was the correct choice, as she was currently telling herself. Worst-case scenario, she gets brought in as a suspect because she walked away from a crime scene, and the police somehow end up twisting her arm into a confession. But, on a ship with so many superpowers, Keaton figured the chance that the staff hadn’t employed at least one mind-reader was slim to none, so if they still ended up convicting her despite her being innocent, she probably wasn’t going to last long on the ship anyway. Best-case, though, walking away meant she was getting herself out of the picture altogether, and this was the scenario she chose to focus on, hoping that forcing herself to dwell on the possible upsides would help calm her down. One week ago, her biggest problem was settling in on The Promise, but now it was trying not to get herself put on some likely-superpowered killer’s hit list.

Natalie Ellis

Natalie knew Lynn wouldn't take it well. She wasn't prepared for how crazy Lynn's eyes were. Natalie felt in danger as the air began to get hotter in the decreasing space betwwen them until Lynn was standing mere inches from Natalie. The tension was palpable, and Natalie's own eyes were starting to look like that of a cornered animal. Not just fear, but that spark. You could tell that they were about to hiss, or growl, or swipe, or charge, or do whatever else it took to survive. Here they were. Two incredibly dangerous girls, both of their hearts were beating fast, both glaring wildly at the other. The tension was palpable.

"Please," Natalie muttered incredibly quietly in the silence. "Please don't." She didn't know if she could control herself. If Lynn so much as slapped Natalie right now, one of them was going to die. Natalie was trying her best to stay calm, stay in control. Focus on her heart. Its rhythm. Focus on her breathing. Count her breaths. Please, Lynn, just take my advice and stay here or walk away. Just don't attack me. Please. I will try to kill you.

Natalie breathed a huge sigh of relief when Lynn finally declared that she was leaving. Of course she had to get another threat in. Not that Natalie was going to tell anybody about them. It was their choice whether they stayed or left and if they wanted to pretend this never happened that was also their decision. That's what she'd tell security if she got asked why she didn't tell them about the others. Because it's not her decision. It was theirs.

Amelia and the other girl left straight after, leaving just Natalie and Archie. Natalie was very grateful that Archie was staying, and when he parroted her own earlier words back to her, that she should look out for each other, her heart skipped and she cocked her head at started at Archie like even she wasn't sure what she had just heard. Then she smiled genuinely, steeled herself and nodded. "Right. Thank you for staying. It means a lot. Plus...if you left and anyone else had heard you scream, I'd have had a really hard time covering for you without namedropping you. So thanks. The others all left, and Lynn was so angry. It's like they're all thinking I've made a mistake. But I haven't." she said aloud, mostly telling herself. "Informing Cara is exactly what a completely innocent student would do if they weren't paranoid or stupid."

Radvi had descended the most compact route of ramps and walkways to make it down to the brush as quickly as he could. He headed along the river pathway, keeping his guard up as he went. With everything that was happening on the Promise, he was beginning to feel rather uneasy, no matter what the present circumstances might have been. The fact that someone had gone missing for a whole week was enough to unsettle a lot of personnel. Searching all that time and having no leads come up, only for a body to suddenly make the scene… there was just nothing good about any of this.

Radvi saw his destination up ahead. An ambulatory vehicle with its lights flashing had reached the spot before he had. Several medics were standing by, two closer to the river, where Coleman’s body supposedly was. The only other people present were two students - a boy and a girl. Girl must’ve been the one who made the call, one Natalie Ellis. The boy…

Oh, no. The one from last week’s mess during orientation. Archie Anderson.

Did he... no, no, no, it’d be irresponsible to jump to that kind of conclusion when Radvi had only just arrived. He pulled up to the scene on his ATV and dismounted it. He walked by the two students, doing his best to keep any sense of unease, undetectable. “Stay right there.” He said to the both of them. He’d have to question them later.

Radvi headed towards the river, where the two medics were examining the body. The moment they noticed him, one of them looked up at Radvi and just… shook his head. No words had to be spoken. The gesture itself wasn’t even necessary - he could see how damaged Coleman’s body was from a few yards away. Bent legs, chest caved in… good lord. He turned his head and sighed, anticipating yet still feeling very unnerved by how this whole thing had unfolded.

Oh, well. Had to act on it.

“Cara.” Radvi said, connecting to the AI through his earpiece, “Coleman confirmed dead. Get a team of the closest agents here. Need to set up a perimeter and get him out of sight.”

“Will do, Agent Radvi.”

With that, he returned to where the students had been. With the situation as it was now, some proceedings had to be taken care of before questioning could be done. So for tonight, these two were off the hook.

“You two will get brought to the station in the morning for questioning.” Radvi said to them, “Head back to your quarters for the night. If anyone stops you, tell them to contact Radvi.”

Griffin

It was quiet, but Griffin was beginning to find that most helicopters tended to be quiet. It was peaceful, being left alone with one's thoughts while the night sky of London started to give way to the sun in Imax three-d quality. Peace was a luxury that Griffin hadn't had recently, it was quite scarce. With a shift of his weight, Griffin brought his right hand up and adjusted the headphones around his ears, an instrument used to assist in hearing any of the other five people on board. Griffin doubted it would be needed, however, as his family wasn't really the talking type. At least, not the type to talk to him. His father, Arthur Aparo was busy tapping at his handheld, no doubt scheduling a meeting to discuss some business or the other after Griffin was dropped off. His mother? Powdering her nose while the wind was gone. If he were closer to his family he might have chuckled at the sight, as who in their right mind powdered a nose while riding in a Helicopter? And then there was Mikael, a tall and intimidatingly bald Serbian who was staring right at Griffin. The man always put Griffin on edge, being the one responsible for 'ensuring his greatness' and serving as a bodyguard to the Aparo family as a whole. Griffin shifted his gaze, not wanting to continue meeting the steel gray that seemed so lifeless, like a black hole of emotion. He knew that in the end that was what he himself was being trained to be, and his stomach flipped wondering how long it took Mikael to fall to that point. Was he born into a life he had no decisions over? Was he forced to give up his entire childhood for it?

It was a thought process for another time, as Griffin suddenly felt the Helicopter dip and the first voice Griffin had heard since they took off blasted into his ears. "Alright, wakey-wakey back there. We're setting down, and it looks like we have a welcoming party." The voice, belonging to the pilot of the chopper was right. A pitch-black sedan was idling next to the pad and men wearing black suits stood awaiting them. From inside, Griffin took a deep breath and gave a cursory glance around the interior of the Helicopter. His father was sighing and placed his handheld into his front pocket, while his mother finished up her make-up and started practicing her smile. Mikael, as always did nothing but stare at Griffin and the young man started wondering if the Serbian had a thing for him or something. The Helicopter landed and began to shut down which prompted Griffin to lean forward and begin to gather his bags. He didn't have much as he was told that he would have money to spend on the station when he arrived. As such his bags mostly contained his tailor-made clothing, such as sports coats and dress shirts.

As he leaned back up a breeze of warm arm caressed his face and he was suddenly blasted back into another Helicopter ride. It had been two years ago, one of the first operations that Griffin had inserted into. Around him, instead of his parents and bodyguard, were hardened soldiers, checking over weapons and going over a tactical map. The blades spinning in this chopper were louder and screams could be heard from outside the vehicle. When the door opened, a wave of heat, a tornado compared to the breeze that set him off took his breath away and left him gasping even as his body began to scream at him, asking him why the hell he had just jolted into a new environment so quickly. The others inside didn't seem to mind the sudden shift and had instantly exited the chopper with weapons drawn and raised. Griffin was barely able to register the fist that grasped at his vest but winced when the man who owned the fist leaned down into his ear and screamed.

"Get the FUCK up and move! None of these men are dying because of you." Griffin nodded as his reflex for following orders helped him in his shell-shocked moment. He slipped out of the door and scrunched up his face as the sun blinded him, and briefly remembered his sunglasses. He brought them down from his helmet and found that it did in fact help with the glaring light. He followed alongside the squad as they headed to a defensible position and upon arriving the team leader knelt to open a map. "Alright, the target is about a click and a half away. Native forces are in the loop on this one, so shouldn't be to much trouble, they're staging a raid on the village further down to cover our infil. Rapid exfil is available right outside the building our intelligence places the bastard. Goins, Radio, and Sparks you're with the kid on Subjugation. The rest is on me."

The flashback was over as quickly as it began and Griffin became aware of the voice in his ear telling him that it was safe to exit, that the blades had winded down. Robotically, Griffin exited the chopper, his legs feeling a bit like jelly whether it was from his flashback or from the lack of use during the morning. Either way, he was still able to reach the black-suited men and nodded to the one that seemed to be in charge. He received nothing in return, and Griffin figured that he would at least feel at home if everyone at the station acted like this. Griffin felt like he was missing something, so he ran through a mental list and a light-bulb dinged in his consciousness and he opened his sports coat to reveal a letter in the breast pocket. He handed it over to the suited man and watched as he opened it.

The man read it and nodded before turning towards the sedan and ushering Griffin towards it as well. Hesitation appeared for a split second but he got rid of it quickly. He gave another nod and made his way to the back of the sedan. He opened the door and took a final glance towards the Helicopter. Neither of his parents seemed to care enough to wave goodbye and it stung more than it should. Why would they wave him off? They never cared before, and a simple Helicopter ride wouldn't suddenly make them care enough to wave goodbye. In fact, hell would freeze over before either of the two adults waved to send anyone off. Instead, the last thing Griffin saw before climbing into the sedan was Mikael staring at him from outside the Helicopter. One day, Griffin promised himself, he was going to tear that man's eyes out...

Griffin was surprised to find two other young men in the backseat of the sedan and raised an eyebrow as the one on the far right chuckled and shook his head. "Whoa, where did they find you? Some modeling agency, are you the new face for The Promise? Cause you don't look like security." Griffin took a breath in and then nodded slightly, shrugging while giving a soft chuckle.

"All I was told was that I was chosen out of hundreds of applications. Not that I even knew I applied." He shrugged again and leaned back in the seat. He was nervous about being thrust into a social situation like this so fast. He had no idea what to do, or how to act and it was pretty apparent. His attempt at humor was more awkward and he didn't even attempt eye contact. It was a side effect of being deprived of real social interaction in his upbringing. When you only learn about how to oil weapons or kick things the rest of basic human functions were left to develop raw and Griffin was paying the price for it.

For a moment Griffin frowned. Perhaps he was making better progress at being the machine his parents wanted after all. The thought made him wince, and he took to staring out of the window as the Sedan sped around the airfield towards a waiting shuttle which was no doubt the ticket to the orbiting station. Luckily, or unluckily the conversation stopped with the awkward feeling still in the air which gave Griffin a chance to start breaking down the conversation to see where he could improve. He was a smart young man, and if he was going to experience things on his own, he for sure wanted to shore up places in his character that were lacking.

Griffin frowned when they got to the rocket launch pad which was a good few miles away from the airport. It was becoming a common practice to have a shuttle location near the major capitals of the world but just staring at the sleek design made Griffin's already nervous stomach start flipping again. He was going to die, going to snuff it before he was able to experience anything other than the carefully constructed life that his parents had put together. It was a bleak picture but Griffin's mind was an unwilling ally at best and a rioting activist at worst. The Sedan pulled off next to a command room that oversaw the launchpad and the two suited men exited the vehicle first. They opened either back seat door and then gestured towards the building. Griffin was tempted to say something in regards to robots but decided against it, no need to make a bad impression so quickly. Instead, he followed along like a good little soldier and raised an eyebrow as he was led to a room that contained a group of ten men. Six were sitting in what looked like school chairs while the rest stood at the front beside a projector.

Griffin was pointed to an empty seat. Once all the recruits were in their seats a holo-projection came up revealing a larger man wearing a scowl. After a moment the man began to speak, turning in the projection as he does. It was obvious it was a recording but Griffin leaned forward to listen intently regardless.

“Good evening. I hope this message finds you well.

My name is Gennedy Hardin. I am the department head of security for The Promise. After reviewing hundreds of applications, you have been chosen to come aboard. Either for your work ethic, your history, your skills, or all of the above.

Make your final arrangements, and be ready to take off. May god’s love be with you, and we’ll see you in the sky.”

Griffin raised an eyebrow while crossing his arms. That was it? A simple we'll see you in the sky didn't do anything to curb the acrobatic stomach that was currently competing for Olympic points. He didn't have time to complain however as he and the other new recruits were stood up and led to what looked to be an elevator. The recruits entered first, followed by two men wearing white suits. A button was pressed and the compartment doors closed. To quite a bit of surprise, the compartment started going backward instead of going up or down. Griffin realized what it was instantly, it was a direct ride to the rocket bay. As the full compartment continued backward, Griffin found himself sweating, bits of moisture making his dress shirt stick to his skin. He knew his breathing changed as well, and with a quick glance confirmed that at least two others were having the same issues.

Sudden metallic clanging signaled that they had arrived at their destination, and the compartment started slowing down while gears started moving them up. Griffin felt his heartbeat now, and wondered if anyone else could hear it? It was so loud, the rhythmic thumping that should have been relaxing but was instead causing fear to enter into his brain. He shook his head a bit and took a few deep breaths. He held them and released them five seconds later. This helped a bit but as a door opened, opposite the door they entered, Griffin saw the latch to the rocket and no amount of breathing was going to help him as his mind filled with at first panic and then restrained fear. It was strange because he didn't even know what he was afraid of. Perhaps it was the unknown factor of his life, perhaps it was the thought of burning to a crisp before leaving the atmosphere. He took a deep breath and then narrowed his eyes. He heard the pilots jokingly asked who wanted to be first, and before anyone could move Griffin pushed past them all.

The interior of the rocket was actually rather nice. Various control consoles could be seen attached to chromed over metal while blinking lights gave visual representation to the beeping around each console. Griffin's jaw dropped unconsciously as he stared and then he felt a push from behind which made him remember the rest of the recruits waiting for him. He muttered an apology and made his way further into the rocket. About halfway through he noticed a large circular room with steel chairs that had tough harnesses prepared for passengers. He took it as the correct location and made his way to one of the chairs. He started buckling himself in and found that his hands were trembling. It was all so surreal, all happening so fast. Luckily the pilots double checked all the harnesses and fixed some of the less than secure straps chuckling at them.

"Don't look so nervous, we do this all the time. Just a simple rocket thrust off-planet and we're sailing through the sky." The man chuckled again and made his back to the cockpit with his partner, leaving the recruits to just stare at each other. Griffin glanced to his left and nodded to a young man who looked to be about his age, maybe a bit older.

"Just a simple rocket launch, you know. Nothing could ever go wrong, not very reassuring if you ask me." His hands were gripping his harness hard and the man beside him laughed and nodded a few times.

"Exactly! Like, the fact they've never had a problem makes it worse. One in nine-thousand odds still means there is the one." Griffin found himself laughing as well, which caused the entire group to laugh which made the nerves disappear.

And then the engines started, and everything was drowned out by that noise. It was a noise that threw Griffin back into shock, back into a dry and hot middle eastern village. Explosions and yelling and Griffin attempting to subjugate a Meta-human who was wreaking havoc. He had failed, and two more mercenaries were killed as the metal bullets they fired stopped and went back to them. Griffin ran across the ground, diving and barely managed to get a hand around the Meta-human's ankle before three bullets slammed into the girl's form. She crumpled on top of Griffin and red blood covered his form...

"Hey! HEY! Hello, can you hear me? Yo man, you need to relax for a second." The ringing in his ears started dissipating, along with a gruff man's voice repeating 'ignore and override', and Griffin was brought back to the present. He was looking directly at the young man to his right who was peering back at him with genuine concern. Griffin shook his head a few times and knew his eyes were wide and dilated.

"How long was I out of it? Did er, anyone else notice?" In his still ringing ears Griffin could hear the phrase still, 'ignore and override kid' over and over again until finally, the ringing stopped completely. The other young man shook his head, his own eyes glancing around at the others who were straining to see as much space as possible. Not like they weren't going to get plenty of that view when they arrived at the station.

"Nah, but I was trying to talk to you for about ten minutes. Where did you go? I'm Crispin by the way, I was asking if you wanted to bunk together if we're allowed to choose partners or whatever." Griffin seemed shocked to see he had been gone for that long and just slowly nodded.

"Just was thinking about burning into a crisp ya know. But, um, Yeah, that would be great, er, Crispin. I'm Griffin, you can shorten it if you want, I don't care much. Do you think we'll actually get to choose?" Crispin opened his mouth to respond but was stopped before could. The sound of metal connecting to metal could be heard, followed by a short announcement from the pilots stating that they were arriving and starting docking procedures. Griffin smiled and leaned his head back, realizing that he wasn't actually dying in a ball of fire. It was a good feeling and Griffin looked over to Crispin who also seemed relieved.

Griffin got a better look at his first 'friend', realizing he had never really seen him. The young man seemed to be about 18 to 21 years old, with a shock of red hair, along with a freckled pale skin tone. He was still observing when the pilots came out and started unbuckling the harnesses. At all of their perplexed faces, the two started laughing again. "Don't worry, the ship docks itself. You're all good to gather your things and report back to the entrance hatch. Thanks for flying Rios and Sanchez's magic rocket, servicing all your transportation needs."

Griffin found himself smirking and clapping along with everyone else and started floating his way towards the exit hatch. A hissing sound followed by some more clanking signaled that docking was complete and a green light suddenly clicked on above. Another hiss and the hatch swung open to deposit the recruits into a processing Hangar for new employees. Desks were situated all around with seemingly bored attendants waiting with stacks of paper. Griffin found himself shuffling forward, almost falling as his body tried to get used to the new gravity on the station. Others from the ride were losing some of the breakfast they had that morning and Griffin was glad that his stomach had stopped its own revolt. As he reached one of the desks the attendant glanced up and tilted her head. Griffin hesitantly handed over an official-looking employment document and snuck some looks past the bay and into the station itself. It was a massive piece of human engineering and despite himself, Griffin felt quite impressed.

"Mr. Aparo, you're all settled. Wait on the other side of the desk for Security Sergeant Moore." Griffin shot his eyes back to the attendant, nodded, and gave a small smile before picking up his suitcase and moved past the desk. This gave him a better view of the interior but also a feeling of acceptance. He had arrived now, the trip was over and this station would be his new home for quite a stretch of time. He felt someone approaching behind him and looked over his shoulder to see Crispin stand beside him.

"Hey, I guess we're waiting on the-"

"Security recruits! ATTENTION!" The yell was easily heard by everyone inside the bay and probably outside of it as well and every recruit snapped into a stance of attention. Some had been still talking with the attendants, some were even in mid-step. All of them stopped, dropped what they were carrying, and became statues. The wielder of such impressive vocal projection stepped further into the hall wearing a crisp Blue and Black security uniform. Red 'sun'-glasses shielded his eyes and a sneer adorned his lined face. "When I release you! You will remain quiet, finish your paperwork and then line up in a double line formation in front of me! Those already done will start this line from left to right. Am I understood?!"

The resulting yell from every recruit shook the breakables in the bay. "YES SIR!!!"

Griffin himself had instantly bent down after being released from attention and rushed over to the Sergeant. He found that he had arrived first and took a spot five meters from the Sergeant's right, their left. He knew it wasn't expected but habit had him shift into a parade rest stance once arriving at his designated location and the Sergeant seemed to nod a bit. Griffin made sure to keep his eyes straight and forward and by the time the rest of the recruits had lined up it appeared that no one managed to get on the Sergeant's bad side. "By God, might be the best batch of recruit we've gotten in a while. Right, keep to the formation. Two lines with the far left man leading each. We won't be walking far, do keep up." With that the Sergeant pivoted on his left boot and Griffin was quick to start the first line, smirking to himself and Crispin who was leading the second line.

The recruits marched for some ten minutes before arriving at a busy building that had the Security Symbol and badge on the top. Then they continued marching until they arrived at a similar-looking meeting room, with similar-looking chairs. The Sergeant moved to stay at the front of the room and clasped his hands behind his back.

"Welcome, all of you to The Promise. I see within each of your eyes the same hesitancy and excitement I once had as well. Let me be the first to tell you, your decision to come up to the stars was one of the best you could have made. Our Security Officers that retire back to the planet have an employment rate of almost 99%. Now that you're here and even after you're considered a family, a brotherhood who answered the call of duty to protect and serve onboard one of the most potentially dangerous facilities possible. I'm proud to welcome you all. Now, we will pass around a bunk assignment list. This isn't a school, and you're all adults so there will be no assigned bunking until there is a problem. There are four beds to a bunk, so go ahead and get that done quickly. While you're working on that I will be passing pairing sheets. All new recruits will be assigned a training Officer for as long as I or the Captain sees fit."

As soon as the Sergeant stopped talking many hands started going for the clipboard but Griffin saw that Crispin managed to one of the first. Griffin nodded to him to add his name to the dorm with Crispin and then sat down while everyone else signed up as well. Griffin got a glancing look at the sheet as it passed his face and saw that he and Crispin were rooming with a Jensen Alexston, and Kairo Ahmedi. An interesting mix of people Griffin thought as he stretched his arms out. In a normal circumstance, the stretch might have been accompanied by a yawn but Griffin found that he wasn't tired in the slightest and instead kept darting his eyes all around the room. After some fifteen minutes Sergeant Moore returned with a box full of watches and earpieces. "Hope you're all settled with the bunk assignments. Now, this here is going to be your primary means of communication along with your phones which should now all be updated with your training officers name and badge numbers thanks to Cara, the AI in charge of the station."

Griffin glanced down at his phone in surprise and found that he did indeed have a message from the AI on the front.

Welcome to The Promise Training Officer Griffin Aparo! Your training officer will be Officer Radvi, I look forward to helping you serve on our great station!

Griffin just shook his head in wonder and typed back. Thanks Cara, I appreciate the welcome. He sent the message and then placed his phone back in his breast pocket, barely catching the Sergeant's last words.

"-forms will be waiting for you in your bunks after the orientation video. Understand you only have this video to familiarize yourself with the layout of the headquarters. No one will help you, you must learn to help yourselves. Now, I got real work to do. Once again it was a privilege to be the first to welcome you to the family. Keep your heads on a swivel and keep each other safe." With his last words spoken, the Sergeant left the room and the lights dimmed before a projector started a movie on the far left wall. The movie was simple, detailing the layout of the Headquarters and broke down the station into quadrants. Each Officer was given a number designation and a patrol team designation to make identifying voices on the radio easier, as well as assigned beats. Beyond that, radio etiquette was gone over, explanation on how to refrain from keying up when someone was using the same frequency until they were done. Emergency radio traffic, Sergeant overrides, and other extreme circumstances were all briefly gone over as well and a reminder that all of this would be in the handbook which awaited the recruits on their beds.

After two hours the movie ended itself and the recruits all filed out together and made their way to the bunk halls. It was quite simple to find and Griffin was surprised to find that each bunk room had twin-sized beds for each man. Better than what he had been expecting for sure. The rooms were nice overall, and as promised a dark blue uniform with black accents was waiting on his bed. The apparent signature red glasses, earpiece, shirt-stays, and a hat sat on top of the uniform and Griffin had a smile from ear to ear as he picked some of the gadgets up. Without waiting another moment, the young man stripped to his boxers and started pulling on the uniform. It fit perfectly, a little too perfectly and Griffin wondered how they had managed a perfect fit so quickly. He shrugged and decided he wouldn't think too much on it and situated his cap over his hair, activated his watch and put in his earpiece. A mirror was hanging from a blank spot on the wall and Griffin had to admit, he quite liked the uniform. Now fully dressed, he carefully folded his other clothes and hung them in the closet that was marked with his name before then leaving the room once more.

The next stop was the armory, where Griffin was outfitted with an under belt, belt clasps, a heavy tactical belt, two tactical pouches, a baton holster, a cuff pouch, and two cuff variants. After securing it all across his waist, and buckling the clasps he moved over to the quartermaster who was handing over stun batons. If Sergeant Moore had a permanent scowl, then the quartermaster had an ingrained scowl, and the muttering under his breath got louder and louder after each recruit. By the time it was Griffin's turn he could make out most of the words, which included some choice phrases about the new green boys that would no doubt break his equipment. Now sufficiently armed and uniformed the recruits made their way back to the conference room where they would wait for their training officer to come to pick them up. Griffin waited patiently, the excitement of being in a new uniform and being sent out on his first day making it easy to ignore the fact that he and Crispin were the last two waiting.

"Guess our Officers are pretty busy. Hopefully, that means we got the good ones. Griffin nodded and then chuckled, shrugging and answering back.

"That or they're always late and we got paired with the worst ones. Griffin chuckled again as Crispin grimaced and then leaned his head back to relax a bit while he continued waiting. Boy was it good to finally relax though.
