Basically what the cover says.

I don't know much about it other than that he's dying and will be dead soon.
Are people happy or sad about the news?

I know a lot of the atheist community (That I'm active in) is celebrating, and want's to protest at the funeral same way the Baptist do to others.
Me personally? That's just stirring the pot and making it worse, I'd rather we just leave the church alone to grief for their lost leader.

That will honestly teach them more than any amount of hostile retaliation from us will do anyways.
I'm not even happy about the death, I'd rather just see them stop being so hateful. :/

I can understand that people want to picket his funeral to show those assholes how it feels, unfortunately they simply will not get the picture. It will not have an effect on them and they (the church) will continue to protest funerals in the future.

Other than that, I hope Fred enjoys hell. Rest in undeserved peace.

I don't think people should protest his funeral. The whole reason the WBC does what they do is to get attention. They think everyone is going to hell including them so they want everyone to know about it, and the only way they can is by being horrible people. If people were to protest Fred Phelps' funeral it would get them even more attention and add fuel to the fire. There is no way to go about it that won't make everything worse than it already is.

And that's the mentality. Things are going to get worse either way, so they may as well.

I'd rather not celebrate the death of anyone, but it's good that there's going to be less awful in the world.

It's kind of a shame; he used to be one of the best civil rights lawyer in the Southern States that staunchly represented and fought for black people when very few other white people would. I can't help but wonder what happened, what went wrong. How can a guy who used to have a lot of compassion and empathy become such a hateful asshole?

Me and much of the baptist community will be very happy once this organization either changes its name or dies.
However, I don't think protesting his funeral would be a good idea. Just be glad he's gone, and then move on.
Actually, I'm not sure if his death really means anything worth celebrating. I don't know much about the inner workings of Westboro, but I don't think his death will cause that much trouble.

Apparently we was ex-communicated recently as well.
No idea why, but the church even seems to not like him now.

But for all I know, maybe they did it cause he was dying.
It being a sign from God, or simply out of fear of actually having to be at the receiving end of a funeral riot for once.

His daughter is the one who I think really runs the show now. So I don't imagine we'll see much of a change. It's just losing a symbolic head then a functional one.

If I remember correctly, the family members seemed to be glad when someone died in their community, and they forgot one of their daughters existed after she broke away from their stupid little cult. I am personally glad that he will rot in the pits of hell that he spawned from, I know the family will be glad he is dead.

Ironically, God does not take pleasure in the death of the wicked. Unlike Fred Phelps.

I hope he finds the real God who's really there for him before he dies, so he doesn't go to the Hell he condemns so many people unfairly for.

I remember the daughter incident...
Sadly the Westboro baptists is not the only Religion that does that.
Just the one that's probably the most hateful and get's the most media attention over it.

Westboro is, unfortunately, not the most hateful religious organization by a long shot. Sure, they'll verbally harass people and deface funerals in order to subvert the legal system so that they can own money. However, they're still not quite as evil as the KKK...and the KKK is still downright tolerant compared to groups like the Taliban, who murder homosexuals with construction equipment.

Of course, if Westboro was much eviler, the police would be at their doorstep by now. Right now, they're just sort of skirting the principles of what society is willing to tolerate. I believe this will lead to their ultimate downfall: One of these days they're going to picket the wrong funeral, and some half-unstable grieving person will snap and open fire.
