When people talk about cracks in the system, they're talking about Cordelia Lynn Holmes. Cordelia was named as such because she was the youngest of several girls received at the facility she was left at as a child, and, ironically, the sweetest. She quickly became someone bounced around in the system. Lynn didn't do well in school and stayed with several different foster families, all of whom struggled to tame her. Some thought that having a parahuman as a foster child would be a tremendous opportunity, but none were up to the task. Lynn was difficult to handle from a young age, prone to outbursts, and had a penchant for mischief. This created something of a feedback loop - as she wore down one family, she became increasingly convinced she just couldn't make family work, and was wasting her time trying. Lynn's time in the foster system wasn't easy, and her only semi-stable relationships were some friends she made with a few other girls in the system. Lynn was shifted through schools and classes due to her misbehavior and struggled to form any lasting bonds there. Most of her teachers, perhaps incorrectly, perhaps correctly, assumed Lynn was a failed case.

At a certain point, Lynn ran away. She got involved in petty crime and hung out with a few less than savory characters. This period lasted for a few years, starting when she was around 13. Lynn would occasionally come back to her foster family, occasionally not. She became involved with some less than entirely reputable individuals, who seemed quite welcoming, and did not do much to put her on the right path. Lynn picked up a few skills and was in a state of semi-homelessness for a while. She would crash on couches or return home when she couldn't find anyone else. Lynn was scared, a lot of the time, but learned to suppress that. Lynn attended school sporadically, but she was in a district with abysmal funding and not much in the way of resources to help support her. She did a brief stint in juvy, with the hope of hammering out her bad behavior, but at that point Lynn was pretty committed to her life path.

Lynn's powers had been both a blessing and a hindrance for her. Without them, it is unlikely Lynn would have been able to fare as well with the lifestyle she had - a small girl alone on the streets does not tend to do well. With her powers, she was able to defend herself, and become something of an asset for a few of the groups she ran with. At the same time, it did prompt a degree of alienation, and Lynn was an easy scapegoat when the police came around - as a parahuman, the natural paranoia and mistrust made her an easy target, and drew unwanted attention after a certain point. A short time after juvy, she was approached by the Promise, who confronted her with an ultimatum that even Lynn couldn't really budge from. If she continued on her path, she would likely be spending the rest of her life in a federal prison, and as a parahuman, she'd probably be kindly ask to hold still while they put the needle in her arm.

Or, she could try this stupid Academy.

Lynn had never once been on a plane, but she got to ride a rocket ship.

Freaky-D - true identity unknown - is an emerging subject of public notoriety down planetside, primarily within the western coast of the United States of America. Appearing out of seemingly nowhere around five months ago, Freaky-D quickly began earning a level of infamy on various social media outlets through a combination of vigilante acts, publicity stunts, and vandalism in the form of large-scale graffiti, mostly involving his facial visage and moniker.

In regards to the acts of vigilantism, Freaky-D has been recorded in the act of intervening in multiple crimes in progress, ranging from small-scale store robberies to full-on bank heists, some of which have involved parahuman criminals (albeit on the lower end of the power scale). The majority of these events have ended in the offending parties' efforts being thwarted, but not all. Still, Freaky-D’s attempts have been met with both praise and ridicule - from the civilian public and local authorities, respectively.

As for the publicity stunts - dance routines, flash mobs, brief animations played on hacked public screens, those sorts of things.

All attempts to track and identify Freaky-D have ended in failure. At any point in time, he seems capable of disappearing off the grid entirely. He has not displayed anything in the way of parahuman abilities, as his strength, speed, agility, etc. all appear to be within human limitations, if on the high end. Therefore, attempts to pin him down are not necessarily regarded as urgent in the grand scheme of things.

About a week ago, Freaky-D went silent. No public appearances, no activity on social media, nothing. Questions and guesses as to his whereabouts have arisen, yet no one has divined the real answer.

He’s headed to space. More specifically, the Promise.

JUNE 23, 2016 - Formally enrolled at the Richmond Police Training Academy.

MARCH 3, 2017 - Beginning of police work in Richmond, Virginia.

FEBRUARY 9, 2019 - Johanna Radvi is born to Jacob Radvi and Lillian Boucard (significant other at the time, unmarried).

JUNE 6, 2022 - Married to Lillian Boucard.

JULY 13, 2022 - First documented display of Johanna Radvi's parahuman abilities. Identified as small-scale floral manipulation, mainly used on house plants to make them grow at an increased rate. Processing and public awareness alert performed without issue. Jacob Radvi's reputation among fellow officers is somewhat damaged, though gradually improved.

AUGUST 8, 2024 - Date of the ‘Welles Incident’. Killings planned by Darren Welles (male, parahuman, age 20 at time of death), believed to be out of personal anti-authoritative views. Multiple officers’ families killed during the night of the incident, via severe external and internal lacerations generated by way of Welles’ parahuman abilities. Lillian and Johanna Radvi are included among the list of deceased. Jacob and multiple other officers band together and ultimately terminate Welles later that night. Four officers are killed, Jacob and five others survive.

NOVEMBER 16, 2024 - Offer is sent to Jacob to join the CPER program (clarification - the Counter-Parahuman Emergency Reserves program is a small organization based in multiple parts of the United States, geared towards training non-nullifier humans in methods to combat, incapacitate, capture, and neutralize low-to-mid-threat level parahumans in the event that one becomes rampant and no specialized forces are available for whatever reason). Offer is accepted.

NOVEMBER 21, 2026 - CPER training is formally completed with notedly high marks. Name is selected by Chief Gennedy, along with several others, to be offered positions within the Promise Security force. Offer is accepted.

Agent Radvi has remained within service of Promise Security to this day.

Amelia was born to a family of privilege and connections with the government. Her family had a nice home in a nice neighborhood. Your standard neighborhood culdesac with other families of similar standing, wealth, and propriety, who's children all went to a fancy prep school. Friends of the family were expecting little Amelia to be a prim and proper daughter to be groomed for a similar lifestyle. To the family's disappointment, that was not at all what they got. Amelia had a tendency to ask hard questions even as a child. Why did her family have lots of nice things when others didn't? Why did we have to be mean to the Parahumans? As Amelia grew older and smarter, the answers she got became increasingly....unsatisfactory. And when finally her parents defaulted to "that's just the way it is", Amelia flipped.

At the start of high school, Amelia went from child asking the hard questions to public menace. She defaced public property with activist graffiti art. She began to associate with "the wrong crowd". Alcohol, drugs, and other activities to instigate became increasingly common. And this all came to a head when Amelia's parahuman abilities came into her life.

In early sophomore year, Amelia was about to be cornered by the cops after her latest stunt. Hidden in an alley, she wished that she wasn't here, and was at home in bed, and was suddenly surprised to find that was exactly the case seconds later. Suddenly intoxicated with power, Amelia began to step up her game, causing more trouble and getting away with it. But she made one major mistake. She got careless. It didn't take to long before the government was banging on the door wanted to test Amelia for parahuman abilities. While Amelia could ditch the cops no problem at this point, government agents was another story.

Given her family's pull, Amelia was faced with a quite generous choice. She could either tone down the vandalism, play nice with the government for a year, and be sent to the latest and greatest academy for parahumans for her junior year, or she could be treated as a criminal. Amelia was rebellious, but she wasn't stupid. She chose the former.

Archie hails from Collington Island, a small landmass just off the coast of North Carolina. Known for its fishing industries and picturesque long white sandy beaches. He has spent most of his life on the water and assisting his father with commercial long line fishing. At some point, a large bridge was built to further connect the island to the mainland, which caused the fish to migrate to more hospitable waters. Money became tight, and life became stressful. As he aged his mother left for the mainland, and his father passed away responding to an accident having collided with the bridge. He was then illegally adopted by his father's boss- whom didn't like pens, didn't like paper, and sure as shit did not trust the system. He lived pretty comfortably in a gutted ship that had been brought ashore and onto the Boss' home property. The island was warm, and he had never really grown up with air conditioning. All things considered he was a happy kid, he had his own space, worked for his caregivers company for pocket change on the days he wasn't walking or biking to school, and had plenty of coastal hillbilly friends to spend time with.

He lived with his illegal guardian for several years, turning 17 years old before his powers first manifested. At first, it he felt like he was sleep walking, because he would wake up in the woods ass naked instead of in his boat-flat. This issue progressed for a month or two, turning maybe once or twice a week, until news began being spread around the island of a monster prowling the streets raiding fisheries and killing pets. What used to a relaxed town turned hostile to the unknown fairly quick. Eventually, some of the more daring began setting traps in the night. This resulted in his first capture- and he was shot, multiple times by multiple people. Up until this point, due to the low desire for food and low sensory input his bestial state had been fairly placid and avoided human contact where it could, but upon being shot its attitude quickly changed- gravely injuring several in his escape.

He was tracked down, and found upon transforming back to his human state. With little recollection of the events of the evening he had no idea what to make of the angry mob that had surrounded him in the woods. He was captured once again, although treated better now that he was human- but his true nature was quickly identified, and officials were not far behind.

Archie was taken into custody by the North American Parahuman Rehabilitation program and placed in a temporary holding facility as he had no legal guardian so the nature of his abilities could be documented and observed. He is technically the first Man vs Self type metahuman to have nonconstant abilities that manifest as a result of external factors resulting in a full body transformation and thus he is being relocated to The Promise for further study and training for future applications of his ability.

Born and raised by a single father in sunny Los Angeles, Keaton went through almost the entirety of the public school track without realizing anything was amiss. After all, apart from lacking a mother and having to stop by a secondhand store every now and then, there wasn’t too much to differentiate her from her peers. The colorful spectrum of the large city left lots of room for her to find her niche, and she made a small group of close friends to whom she was known to be “clever and often correct.” From there, she flitted around, exploring the options available to her until she settled down with an interest in art. A few years experimenting in different mediums saw her tend towards sketching, and eventually her natural talent at replicating and expanding upon existing environments and the structures they held led her to fall in love with architecture, which seemed to come naturally to a girl who had an inexplicable way of knowing what would stand and what wouldn’t.

With her decent grades, Keaton moved easily into community college, transferring into a four-year institution her second year. It was around this time that Keaton first realized that perhaps the ease at which she worked with concepts so difficult for others was unnatural. In her classes, a good design needed calculations and proofs that the structure would hold up under its material weight, but Keaton could forego all the math and work on instinct alone. Unlike her peers who designed and redesigned after painstakingly calculating and mapping out every meter, Keaton never trashed a design, instead operating on a gut feeling that never failed her, never sent her trashing a sketch because the math didn’t add up. Realizing that what she’d always thought of as practiced aptitude was, in reality, perhaps the manifestation of a subtle power was jarring, to say the least. She did her best to go on as if nothing was different, as if no major realization about herself was now causing her to doubt every thought she had and action she took, and she lasted all of two months before she finally broke down and called home, hoping to confide in her father. One call was all it took for her to tell her father, and one hour was all it took for people in uniforms to show up at her door.

Natalie was born with extremely strong bones. These had little to no impact in her life except for possibly making her more reckless and adventurous as a kid. Of course, that was until other children started to find out and she became something of an outcast as a child. She would go out of her way to find other children who also had these 'powers' as she innocently called them. Due to this, most of, of not all of her friends, were online and she developed something of a shut-in life.

Natalie's story could have ended there, but for the evil of men. Many powerful men, some of whom criminals, did not have these superpowers, and wanted them. The amounts of blood money poured into the illegal research of superpowers and how to grant powers to those who would otherwise never have them. And they needed test subjects. Police knew this, and if a child was ever born with, or developed any ind of advanced healing capabilities, they were watched very closely, if not outright detained for their own protection. Natalie's power slipped the notice of suck people. But it didn't slip the notice of Project Lion.

One day when she was sixteen, she was walking hone from school. It's still not known where to this day, but she was kidnapped in broad daylight. Not much is known about what happened to her during the next two years, or about Project Lion, but one day Police raided their facility to find the scientists there had been slaughtered. Some were ripped apart, some had their chests or faces caved in. It was a bloodbath. Twenty miles away, Natalie was found unconscious at the side of the road, covered in blood that tests revealed to belong to the scientists. After being detained, the authorities noted that she now had superhuman strength, and was prone to snapping. When she snapped, at least one bone was broken per attempt by staff to restrain her. However, when she didn't snap, she was observed to be a quiet, polite and kind girl who'd always inquire into the wellbeing of people she hurt with genuine concern. It was decided that the facilities were inadequate to hold her for questioning. Besides, it was fairly obvious what had happened. The decision was made to send her to The Promise.

Born in Surrey, Canada, Syed's mother refused to raise a parahuman child and wished to give him up to the government right away, but her sister, Ayda, argued against it. His father was conflicted, but eventually bowed to a compromise; Ayda would be the one to raise Syed instead.

In his early life Syed grew up with frequent visits from his father, and scarce visits from his mother, which marked his childhood as one that was tense and full of conflict. Eventually something outside his knowledge came to a head and the visits from both stopped, his parents deciding not to be part of his life anymore. He was summarily adopted by his aunt and pulled from public school, and began being tutored by his aunt's boyfriend of the time, a man named Wyatt.

While it was known that Syed had powers, it took some time for them to be revealed, and even then there was a lot of dubious confusion on the part of his government visitors. Ayda was required to inform them of any odd events, no matter how seemingly childish or insignificant, so when she reported Syed as talking to himself for extended periods of time, he was tested. The massive headache that resulted was a whole fiasco; Syed could not explain the conversations he held with 'the lights', nor could said 'lights' be detected. Feeling as if he'd done something wrong, Syed tried to behave normally from then on, but despite his caution the tests came again, and again, and again. He stopped speaking to the lights, and to the animals, and the computers, and soon he found he could not talk to people either, his tongue turning to stone at the idea of messing up and being tested again. He could do nothing right, even after it was determined his powers had more to do with energy flow than communication.

Syed became so uncomfortable in his own home he escaped the only way he knew how; retreat, retreat, retreat. He studied until he began testing higher than his public school counterparts, finishing the curriculum well ahead of his age range. Other forms of inward focus came first in meditation, then in yoga, occasionally interspersed with various self-taught athletic techniques from martial arts or gymnastics he picked up online.

His powers were not an escape however, simply a distraction he was reluctant to exercise, no matter how intrigued his government visitors were in ascertaining what exactly he could do. Inevitably, one day they pushed too far and Syed pushed back; his eyes went black, and then pale and cloudy, and an electric shock discharged from his body. It was relatively harmless all thing considered, the doctor responsible was stunned, but unharmed, merely spending half an hour feeling as if he'd been drugged, and the electrical equipment suffered errors and crashes but eventually returned to working order - meanwhile Syed's heart was pounding so hard he gave himself a nose bleed and a panic attack. Afterwards the tests became less frequent.

For a very brief stretch of time things were calm and normal, and then he and his aunt were in a car accident and she was due to spend time recovering for much longer than a minor could be left alone. Not too keen on emancipating a parahuman teenager, Syed was offered The Promise. He accepted.

Griffin Aparo is the son of CEO, Nullifier, and Bounty Hunter Arthur Aparo and his wife Phoebe Aparo. He was born into a world that had been rocked by numerous wars with humans that had powers, humans that were shunned and ostracized by 'normal' people. But instead of fear, disgust, and shame that came with other parents that found that their child had these powers, Griffin was celebrated and paraded as the next Aparo to boast the gift. He became the heir of the Aparo name and from his second day being born was worth more than many small countries.

Some would think that being born into such a family meant that he would have an easy ride, that he would be spoiled and want for nothing. Well, those people would be wrong. Griffin was thrown into 'training' the moment he turned four years old. He was sent tutors and specialists whose job it was to turn him into a deadly weapon. He was trained in martial arts, boxing, wrestling, and weapons four days out of seven. Two were spent with school work, and one was spent learning the skills he'd need to be an heir that the family needed.

This routine continued for his entire pre-teen, and teenage life and while physically he became a machine that could shoot, wield martial weapons, and held four black-belts in various martial arts he was a sunken mess of inner emotions. The only human interaction he had were with strict instructors and fun was simply a word that never existed. He has known only strict structures for his entire life.

Naturally, this made him a natural at following orders and when he was sixteen he was sent out into the world alongside a hit squad. The ASF separated its units into three distinct groups, Subjugation, Elimination, and Liquidation. Griffin, as someone still learning was sent as the Subjugator and was taught in a combat environment how to utilize his powers to subdue and completely nullify a hostile Parahumans abilities. After the target was Subjugated the Elimination team inserted themselves, cleared the area, and depending on if the target was wanted dead or alive would execute the required action. And then finally, the Liquidators. They were the best of the best and were sent to quite simply, eliminate a high-value target(s) through any means possible, regardless of collateral damage. They were walking executioners and many had abilities of their own, finding that they were treated better and fairer than their own communities.

Griffin, however, was only getting started on his journey. After his fill of watching combat from close up, he was to be sent to the orbiting station called 'The Promise' to serve on the Security team while also continuing his schooling. It was a move to get him used to various environments and see how he would fare on his 'own' instead of the close confines of a stifling family and certain schedule. To no one but himself, he has admitted that it would be time to see just how people act and is taking it with an open mind.

Eli Marie Wessex was given the first name of her grandmother and the middle name of her mother. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona to two loving parents and had a pretty normal, happy childhood. Most of her happiest memories come from the summer that she turned 12, even though that summer was the time when everything changed. She doesn't remember exactly when her powers manifested, but slowly throughout the year she began to notice things about herself. Things that she could do to those around her. She was too young at the time to comprehend what exactly was going on, but her parents began to take note.

As Eli continued on in blissful ignorance of what she was and slowly discovered more about her powers, her parents began to fight. First it only occurred when Eli would do it around them, but then it became a daily battle between the two. They loved their daughter, with all of their hearts, but the two had different opinions on the government's reactions to people like Eli. Her father knew the dangers of keeping Eli's abilities a secret from the government and he always made a point that Eli could eventually put others in danger too. This enraged her mother, who secretly had a grandmother that had hidden her ability for all of her life. (The exact grandmother Eli was named after.) Her mother believed that Eli's best chance at survival in this world was to hide, and she would do anything she could to ensure that.

So, the fights continued, lasting a year past Eli's 12th birthday. During this time Eli spent her evenings at home with her mother, where she was safe from watchful eyes. This didn't bother Eli too much. They went on plenty of vacations into the mountains, so Eli was used to being alone with her parents. Unfortunately spending time at home meant that Eli could hear the muffled arguments of her parents through her bedroom door, and when Eli began to ask to have sleepovers with her friends the arguments only became worse. So, Eli stopped asking and began to withdraw from her friends at school.

Flashing forwards to the year of her 13th birthday, Eli was given a fond, yet tense farewell from her parents as she was sent to her last day of school. She'd been looking forward to the summer all year long; her family was going to take a month long vacation to the Grand Canyon in their camper. She was going to spend her 13th birthday under the stars, and this gave her enough hope to make it through her last day of 8th grade. The past year had been a challenge for her. She'd become an outcast, deemed a weirdo for having controlling parents and an odd characteristic about her. They'd begun to bully her, and she was sure that this would be the last day she would have to deal with their taunts. Even though she had made a few friends, ones who never asked her about her personal life or never noticed the odd things that seemed to surround Eli, Eli's parents had promised her a fresh start at an academy nearby when she returned to school in the fall. Little did she know that school would be starting much sooner for her than she expected.

During Eli's last class of the day, gym, a group of students surrounded Eli on the running track outside and began to taunt her. Eli stood still, upset by the taunts but not bothered enough to do anything about it. She'd grown a thick skin against verbal insults. It was only when the lead bully, Patricia Wells, began to push Eli that something within her snapped. From what the other students explained to the teacher, one moment Patricia Wells was perfectly fine, and then the next moment she was on the ground, screaming her head off about spiders and crawling away from Eli. The teacher knew immediately what to do, and as he reached for his phone he also looked for Eli on the field. Eli was nowhere to be found.

Instead, Eli had run straight home from school still dressed in her gym clothes. When her mother looked up from what was soon going to be dinner she was shocked to see Eli standing before her, streaks of tears running down her face. After a bit of time and efforts to soothe Eli, the story finally came tumbling out in between sobs. Eli regretted what she had done, and deep down she knew that everything was going to change now that she had revealed her secrets to her classmates. It was right at that moment that her father stepped through the door, and right behind him followed two men in black suits.

Eli spent the rest of the evening under scrutinizing eye of the two government officials. Her parents were sent to the dining room for quesitoning while Eli's finger was pricked to test for the parahuman gene. Her mother was terrified that they would take her away immediately, but to the relief of the entire family Eli was only put on watch. At the end of the summer, Eli would also be sent to The Promise. As her mother and father sadly explained to her, they had already agreed to notify the government after their vacation and send her there for her high school years. Eli was hurt by this news, but she knew it was for the best.

The family still went on their month long vacation to the Grand Canyon, and Eli was glad to notice that her parents barely fought at all now. Things seemed easier now that she and the government were aware of her parahuman quality. The day of her 14th birthday, her parents let her choose what they would do for the day. She decided to go on a hike, have a huge dinner at a nearby IHOP, and then finish out the night sitting around a campfire. Their last vacation together for years was almost over.

A week before Eli was to be sent to the Promise, she awoke to the sounds of a car door slamming outside. She crawled out of bed, slipped on her shoes, and went outside to see what was going on. Her mother immediately told her to get in the car, while her father continued to beg her mother not to leave. It seemed that her mother intended to run away with her, so that she didn't have to go. Eli felt her heart fill with hope as she considered running away too, but she reluctantly took her dad's hand. She knew it was easier this way, even if it meant breaking her mother's heart. The next day, Eli said her goodbyes and headed off to The Promise.

The next four years of her life were spent aboard The Promise. The first year was rough for her as she adjusted to the new life. It was hard to be without her parents, but she eventually made friends. Friends that she didn't have to hide from. She began to enjoy her life on the space boat. She was excelling at class, training to use and control her abilities, and getting into mischief for fun. Sure, punishments ensued whenever she was caught, but the practical implications of creating illusions meant that Eli got away with most of it.

Contact with home occurred as much as possible, but after her parent's divorce it became less frequent. Her mother checked on her at least once a week, but her father began a new life and started another family. A normal family. This ultimately lead Eli to decide to remain on The Promise for college. She actually graduated high school a year early, but she is currently on a gap year to figure herself out. Deep down, a part of her believes that the government would rather keep her aboard The Promise for the rest of her life. With her ability and her record, she believes that they think of her as a flight risk and a danger to others, like all of the other parahumans aboard. For now she will play their game, continue training and revealing more about her ability, but in the future she will see exactly what The Promise intends for her.

Eli currently lives on her own now that she has moved out of the high school dorms. She works at a nearby clothing retailer as an associate.

Why did Teruo throw him away like that? Why? Gen knew the reason – he was inferior, he was unwanted - but the frustration still clawed at him with every night in this damned cell. Was it not enough to be the first son? The pure-blooded Houjou heir, the one that had never been ‘at risk’? Gen had nothing for his half-brother that wasn’t already the older boy’s birthright, and yet he…

He still…

Typical of both of them. Father didn’t visit even once before it was time to go up. And no matter how much Gen expected it, the disappointment still stung like an open wound.

The men strapped him in, and the engines shook every cell in his being, and Gen felt his head drop back like a ton of bricks.

“Just four years,” he cursed through grit teeth.

When US Army Sergeant Nathan Adair was thirty-three years old, he and his wife, Avery, had a son named Nicholas. It was around this time, due to the perspective and pride accumulated over his career, he grew resentful toward the parahumans of the United States because they did not serve in the military. Retiring at the age of thirty-eight, he took his family and moved into a quiet corner of Nebraska in which he formed his own militia, with expectations of privacy so stringent that it bordered on cultism. The objective was to keep an eye on parahumans, even more meticulously than the federal and state programs. As for whether that was actually the result was inconclusive and complicated, to say the least.

When Nathan became aware of Nicholas' parahuman status, he bribed the relevant physicians to falsify his documentation so that he was legally considered well within the spectrum of biological normalcy. At that, they ran some tests and discovered that his eight year old son was biologically predisposed to become the ultimate surveillance asset, thanks to his inherent ability to piggyback the eyeballs of other people. Nic was then trained as the first junior private in Nathan's militia, being run through the equivalent of basic training and then some, all before he ever hit his double digits.

In spite of the pedigree for action, he was mostly deployed on missions to somewhat-literally "get eyes on" various parahumans in the area without the targets even becoming aware. Nicholas complied and always succeeded. No one ever demonstrated an understanding of his true function and seemingly few ever seemed to have noticed his antennae. Periodically Nathan and his fourteen man platoon would assassinate a parahuman they suspected of being disrupted or being particularly menacing. Nicholas watched all of it, participating and broadcasting the shared eyesight to the entire militia at times. He occasionally saw parahumans beaten down as though he were doing it with his own hands. Around the time that he was twelve, Nicholas had become complicit in several parahuman abductions, the victims of which were housed and restrained in the militia's recently annexed holding facility.

Around this time, Nicholas grew to understand and became somewhat calloused before his nightmares began. In order to cope, he began binge drinking. This illuminated his special relationship with alcohol: It totally decimated the tissue that allowed him to transmit and receive visuals. This proved, obviously, problematic due to its neutering of the essential function of his father's unit as a whole. Therefore, he was severely reprimanded every time alcohol was found in his possession.

Though it had been legitimately clandestine and, most succinctly, extremely effective in its operations, the militia met its end around the time Nicholas had become fifteen years old. There was a raid on the compound and the majority of the militia was arrested and charged with domestic terrorism, presumably dropped in Guantanamo Bay or a similar facility. They had mercy on Nicholas, however, due to his young age and fragile state. He was entered into constant therapy, and occasionally dosed with alcohol to prevent him from redeveloping his abilities. After threatening to sue his caretakers when he came of age, his treatment was stopped.

Nicholas Adair has recently turned seventeen years old and has been sober for 593 days. His antennae are three inches long, less than half of what they were before he initially turned to alcohol at his peak, when he was thirteen, and he has been deposited onto The Promise in an effort to further his rehabilitation and enable him to be a contributing member of society.

Though he has not been diagnosed, he exhibits many symptoms of PTSD.

At Risk
The label hung over the Grímsdóttir family not long after they greeted their child into the world. Kas's parents had planned to name their child once they finally met them, but now that the risk that they might lose their child hung over their head they could not bring themselves to name their child. For much of Kas's first few years of life, they were called "my sweet", "my love", "little thing", and "Red" given the red head of hair they were born with. Only once the testing on Kas's genome was dialed back from weekly to monthly, from monthly to semi-annually, and then by "Red's" second year they were told they could come in yearly for observations. Finally, Kas's parents felt secure enough to name their child and finally they felt safe that their child would remain theirs.
Low Risk
Kas had a loving upbringing. A father that worked hard to play the stay-at-home father and contract artist, a mother who did.... Business things. Neither Kas or her father ever really got it, but whatever it was exactly Mom did, she was damn good at it. They had a comfortable lifestyle, one that afforded them some luxury in a country where living (if we ignore the frigid wasteland it was most of the year) was already fairly comfortable. Kas's father always encouraged them to try new things, to never be afraid to fail, and to follow their passions. This quickly turned into fighting people for exercise, making terrible art all the time, and trying to make clothes that would turn them red looking back on themselves.
Minimal Risk
With nearly 13 years without any sign of meta-development, the Grímsdóttir family was able to move to Ireland following a lucrative job opportunity for Kas's mother. In Ireland, Kas flourished and took advantage of the climate that was positively balmy compared to home. Making friends, even with their spotty English and even spottier Irish was a snap for a young and energetic Kas. What the lacked in words, they made up for with the energy they brought. Kas almost never said no to new experiences. Sure, they might have had a brief (read: the entirety of their high school career) period of hooliganism, but it was all in good fun. Kas snuck out for drinks at the local pub that aggressively did not card, they shuffled through boyfriends and girlfriends (often more than one at a time), they made bad art that they were beyond proud of, they wore ugly clothing that they made themselves, and they would put on enough makeup to make a clown blush. They lived like an idiot, but boy did they live.
False Flagged
Shortly before going off to uni, Kas was informed at the clinic they went to for testing that it was likely a false flag. Their genome may have matched with some at risk activators, but they were 18 years deep into a life without any parahuman experiences. They were normal. As normal as they could be anyway. They'd still be required to come in for testing on a bi-annual basis, but at this point it was clear. They were no parahuman. Kas took this as the best possible sign for things to come and went on to attend Uni on and off for a few years, taking semester gaps here and there to get a breather and refresh themselves creatively with personal projects to keep the flame alive that was getting treaded on a little more every time they had to take an art-history class. In their second to last semester they broke their leg in a kickboxing competition and shortly after developed a staph infection that left them stuck in a hospital when they should have been working on their finals. And then...

Kas's accent is a mess. The only language that sounds right when they speak it is Icelandic, and even that sometimes gets a little mix of the Irish accent they started to adopt after moving to the Emerald Isle as a teen. Their English is a battleground for their mother tongue and the Irish accent they learned English in.
