I've seen groups use discord for easier contact in a rp, and I've even seen groups migrate to using discord fully. Then again I've seen groups die in discord too.

1: What is your opinion on using discord alongside the site?

2: If a group based in a discord server was looking for people, would it be against site rules to post a lfg for it here? I cant seem to find the site rules page.

I think Discord is a nice tool to have for roleplays. It helps facilitate many aspects of the RP such as relations and plot details, and is a great spot to develop chemistry with your fellow players. However, it is also a double edged sword, and things are just as likely to go awry as they are to go well. Because it is a much easier and faster method of communication, it can be backfire and be a breeding ground for drama and all sorts of negativity. I've seen my fair share of drama, and it ain't fun a lot of the time. I find Discord RPs to be nice, but they're not a necessity for me. I'm totally fine with RPs having them and not having them. There's nothing wrong with doing things the old fashioned way nor is there anything wrong with using Discord.

I don't think posting about a discord-based RP here would be against the rules, but I would ask a mod to double check.

The death of roleplay groups, sadly, happens everywhere-- discord, here, another roleplay website, yadda yadda. It is a known phenomenon. I personally don't think the place has anything to do with it, but rather, mostly on the roleplayers' busy life schedules or loss of interest.

Site rules are here.

I prefer writing and reading longer posts, and the 2k character limit on discord is kind of annoying as someone who regularly drops 10K+ posts. But some people enjoy the rapid fire nature of discord for RPing, and more power to them. largely depends on your group and what you want.

Unfortunately the direct advertisement of Discord RPs is not something we allow as it actively takes members off the site and it opens up the opportunity for other communities to poach members. It does happen unfortunately.

The only exceptions are probably the 1x1s where it wouldn't matter if it's in PMs or on discord, or advertising Discord as an additional communication part for a site RP.

I call it "live" roleplaying, and I absolutely love it. Someone mentioned chemistry, which can migrate between posting qualities and ideally becoming associates or even friends in the RP realm. I have tried one Discord only game and it fell through(i.e., I was kicked out) but besides that I have found an additional Discord online game and it looks promising.

To reiterate, I like straight "live" roleplaying, and find it easy to make friends with others because you hang out in the Discord often times enough, and the level of responsibility to be an adult is a welcome aspect, but can lead to drama. All of it could. Same as the boards.

Discord is great for socialization with your RP members. Discord is fucking dreadful for any meaningful RP unless you like character limits.

Yeah, it would be great if there wasn't such bullshit like character limits. I swear to god, the amount of times I had to cut up a Discord post into several just because it was too long.....

Discord RPing is a bit of an abomination imo. Added to the character limits and all that, unless you really know how to use the markdown to make things pretty, you are limited to a very linear formatting. Now if you're just in it for the writing, then I guess it's cool or whatever, but for people like me who like equal parts writing and aesthetics, a forum coding -- even one as somewhat minimal as the Guild's -- is far superior than Discord's.

Discord RPing in itself is no different than its predecessors (MSN, Skype, AOL Instant Messenger). It can give you more content than a chatroom but less than a message board. There is nothing inherently bad about it and generally its a decent play-by-post system that interfaces a more casual environment. I've had dozens upon dozens of meaningful role-plays through MSN, AIM, and Skype so that argument doesn't hold a lot of water when you inspect it a little closer. That said, message board is the more detail-intuitive unless you are breaking up a post several times over.

I don't know man. I'm speaking from my own experiences and preferences and they all point me in the direction that Instant Messaging rps are wack. I can understand the appeal some have for it, though. To each their own and all that. It's just not my cup of tea is alls I'm saying.

Then, just like forum RPs, you had bad groups/partners. I don't know what to tell you.

Discord is very helpful for if you are doing Tabletop rpgs on sites like Roll20 so you can gather your friends abit more easily, but yes the character limit for text based can be a bit annoying.

However Discord has allowed me to stay in contact with a roleplay partner from rpg for the last 2 years despite alot of things going on in both our lives and we are still rping today thanks to Discord. They are the single best rp partner ive had when it comes to text / forum based, and she knows who she is.

It's a pretty epic win tool for communication. I could never write posts in Discord because 2000 character limits are wack but to each their own innit laddie?

Absolutely not.

Messaging services are not good. With the exception of Yahoo(YIM) that let users create their own private chat rooms any time, anywhere, messaging software is not good. Once you start using Discord with experienced players I think you will find good times once you are established with your community. I know I like it.

As someone who frequently roleplays on Discord in tabletop groups and has done other RPs on Discord, it's alright for quick bursts. If you want to post like you do on the forum, perhaps it'd be better to stay on the forum or in PMs if in the case of a PM RP because the 2K character limit is annoying for RP.

Regarding it being used alongside the site, I like using it. You'll generally find your partners online on Discord more than you would find them on RPG at least in my experience, so you can quickly hit them up and ask for posts or whatever. The price you pay, however, is your OOC being practically dead since OOC chatter would mainly happen on Discord.

1) Has it's pluses and minuses. Depends on taste.

2) Yes it is. That's considered advertising for a non-site RP. As Nutty said if the Discord has a Guild connection, it's fine. Otherwise...
