I got a concept mostly fleshed out, made a lot of notes and I'll properly write it all out tomorrow after some sleep. Had to make some tweaks 'cause of the starter, but it'll work out just fine. :) Can't wait to see everyone's characters!
I've got a few ideas kicking around, we'll see what I can come up with, but if you get a bunch of sheets in and would rather start the vetting process you don't have to wait for me to get one in, no worries.
Heya! Stumbled across the interest check and wound up here! Thought I'd throw my hat in the ring as well- I love the idea of a Sinnoh Gym Challenge and wanted to make a character for it. :D Let me know if I can change anything about him.
”You don’t know what’s out there. You haven’t seen what I have.”
Name: Oriole Aquilo Nicknames: Oreo Age: 16 Gender: Male Origin: Canalave City Appearance: With his body toned from years of hiking, sailing, and climbing during his parents’ research excursions, Oreo definitely resembles an agile alpinist rather than a researcher or a newbie trainer (both of which are far more accurate titles). Dark, brooding eyebrows dominate his glares, and he often messily ties up faded white hair. He stands at 5 “9 and clocks in at about 160 pounds. Personality: Particularly eccentric youth and general xenophiles might be familiar with Oreo’s podcast, “Weird Sinnoh,” in which he rambles for hours about ancient ruins, mythological pokemon sightings, and whether or not Jynx have feet. As the only son of travelling researchers, Oreo knows many odd facts and theories on Sinnoh and the pokemon that live there. When he’s not travelling with his parents, he can be found combing the Canalave Library’s Archives or subduing wild pokemon to take samples.
It takes a certain kind of one-track mindedness to create a podcast on the strange and sinister when they’re thirteen years old- and another kind of determination to actually maintain and meticulously care for a personal brand. Luckily, Oreo was both, and loved it. As his podcast burst in popularity, he had regular Q&A’s with viewers, debates with other content creators, and even a few product placement sponsorships to help support his mission.
Oreo’s entire life is built around his single goal, and he’s willing to do anything and everything to meet it. Short Biography: Fans of his podcasts will note Oreo’s scatter-minded nature and, more prominently, his hatred of dragon pokemon. A self-declared drago-phobe, any longtime listener would know that the podcaster has hated any and all dragon pokemon since the Mystery Giant sighting. A few years back, ferry passengers mere miles from Canalave harbor faced death, or near death, when a giant, unidentified creature rose from the depths of the sea and caused the ship to capsize.
Though the incident would later be chalked up to mass hysteria, Oreo’s parents, esteemed researchers onboard the ferry, published an official statement on the incident, citing a yet-unidentified dragon pokemon as the culprit- and got their credentials revoked.
They eventually began to work at the library full time and gradually moved on with their lives- but scarred by the public humiliation of his family and the trauma of almost drowning, Oreo did not.
He delved fully into his research, scouring texts ancient and modern, local and foreign, looking for something- anything, that would help him prove the existence of the mystery dragon. He never fully sleeps without dreaming of that stormy night, those glowing eyes, or the terrible, sulfuric stench. The officials called it “mass hysteria”, his parents called it a “mystery pokemon”, but Oreo couldn’t begin to put what he saw that night into words.
His obsession encroached onto every aspect of his life- everything became part of his hunt for the truth.
As an independent researcher, Oreo trained a few pokemon to fight off the wild ones he’d encounter on the field, sometimes uploading battle videos onto his website. This got the attention of a new type of fan, since a lifetime’s worth of study translated rather nicely into pokemon battles. But, he insisted to some very persistent fans, he was no trainer- he was a pioneer! And the sea monster was his great frontier to be blazed! His pokemon weren’t trained for sport, they were to fend off beasts of the wild- and to one day slay the greatest beast of all.
But eventually his show got the attention of some esteemed trainers, ones who helped run the Annual Gym Challenge. Ones that probably thought he could help them tap into a wholly different demographic than the usual sports fans. Although initially reluctant, seeing as how chasing after legends and myths doesn’t pay the bills, and an ocean expedition would cost money. And if he happened across the creature on his journey across Sinnoh? Well, he wouldn’t fail to get it on tape. Pokemon:
Name: Floppy Species: Snubbull Gender: Male Ability: Intimidate Personality: Strangely aggressive, even for a member of its species. Desperate for affection. Move Set: -Ice Fang -Bite -Scary Face
Summary: Drago-phobe researcher and internet personality with a massive vendetta. Other: Nothing yet.
I guess this is the closest we'll get to a Sinnoh remake, eh? ouo
Appearance: At 5'7", Rachel's meek 118 pounds lend her a lanky, almost frail physique, that is further accentuated by her whispy mannerisms and shut-off posture. Her hair is a desaturated copper, a remnant of what was a proper red during her childhood, and the origin of her nickname. Despite taking care of herself, and dressing remarkably well, Roux is often described as "seeming" disheveled; perhaps due to her cautious and distanced disposition. She can be most often seen sporting cozy sweaters or hoodies in a variety of rustic, autumnal colours, with matching skinny jeans or corduroy skirts.
Personality: One-track-minded and pessimistic, Rachel is quick to make a poor first impression, sometimes even coming across as a little haughty; She tends to dismiss things that are in opposition to her own goals, devoting the entirety of her time and emotional capacity to her own pursuits. Though once an approachable and loving girl, Roux has developed a more negative disposition and even a bit of an obsession with developing strength lest she misses opportunities to make things right, as a result of her childhood. Regardless of what attributes people tend to ascribe to her, she avoids conflicts, confining her animosity to the ocassional cutting remark before withdrawing from the situation. Almost devoid of pride, Roux carries herself with a bit of a defeatist attitude, a trait that usually difuses alterations on its own.
Beyond her personal values in life, her fascination with strength extends to her philosophy as a trainer; Roux is in love with raw, brutal strength. She admires trainers who have formed a strong bond with feriocious Pokemon such as Tyranitar, and greatly dislikes trainers who choose their partners only for their cuteness.
Despite her quiet and sometimes difficult personality, Roux is not anti-social, and in fact is quite well-connected. In her formative years, she has become aquainted with the Kids Grid, a relationship she maintains to this very day. Roux is highly curious and studious, soaking up information and stories from all around the world, as she did in countless hours spent in the Canalave Library, and is genuinely interested in the experiences of others should they be in any shape or form connected to her own situation. She also deeply loves her family and is a proud resident of Canalave City, feeling rooted and protective of her hometown.
Short Biography: The lone child of a sailor and an apothecary-turned-stay-at-home mom, Rachel lived an unremarkable but happy life as a young girl. Though her father was often away, he would return with little gifts and treasures for the two women in his life, including rarities like Moon Stones and Genius Feathers. Rachel was obsessed with his stories as to how he acquired the treasures, what kind of people and Pokemon he'd met aboard the latest cruise, and what places he'd seen. With her mother, who had coined her nickname due to Rachel's much more vibrant childhood hair, Rachel would spent countless afternoons in the library, reading through the myths of Sinnho, learn about how her mother's Pokemon helped with medical aid, researching the places her father had told them about, and burst with recited information on their way back home. With her sheer endless thirst for stories, her mother, a trainer originally from Orre, introduced her to the Kids Grid, who'd turned into a much more accessible network these days, and Rachel quickly became friends with the kids abroad.
It was her mother, a specialist with poison and grass-types, who gave Roux her first Pokemon; a tiny Venonat, whom Roux loved dearly and named Cookie, and trained it along her mother's own Venomoth. Though she never had intentions of letting her partner get hurt in real battles, she considered contests a possible path, and wanted her friend to be the best it could possible be.
However, things turned for the worse shortly after Roux's 14th birthday. After returning home from a little adventure on Route 218, Cookie had disappeared, not reacting to her trainer's desperate calls. She combed through the route to the best of her ability, returning home to tell her mother of what had happened. Soon, her mother had set out to search the city with her own Pokemon, while Roux called her friends in Orre, asking if they had any of their satellites in Sinnoh. And though this wasn't the case, her foreign friends told her of a rumor they had heard, that Pokemon poachers had recently been sighted all-throughout the chilly region. When her mother returned without Cookie, a heavy air of tragedy hung around the house, and not even her father's return could lift the gloom.
Since the events, Roux became more and more reclusive, spending her days elsewhere. She didn't eagerly await her father's stories upon his return, and she didn't ask her mother to to spend time at the library anymore. She did not catch Pokemon, either, seemingly turning her back to the trainer life. It wasn't until a year ago, when a package arrived with her name on it. Inside were an envelope, a little card, and a Pokeball. Surprised, Roux took the card, and read it. "Your friends at the Grid told me about you a while back. I know some people in Hoenn, who know some people in Sinnoh; it works out. You should try to go your own path. Maybe an old friend comes along. For now, please make new friends, like this one."
With her endorsement for the next challenge in hand, and an Eevee pushing its head into her leg, Roux knew there was a path for her. If only she could get through this, and become strong enough, maybe there was a way to make things right.
Will there be any sort of gimmicks in this? What I mean is, is there mega evolution, or maybe dynamaxing? If not that's alright, I'd just thought I'd ask lol.
I was going to have my character be from Canalave at first, but then I noticed everyone else was already from there.
I'll fancy my CS up a bit later on; it's late and I wanted to get this up today.
"Observe, analyse, solve. Every problem has a solution and every situation is a problem from the right perspective."
Name: Tobias White
Nicknames: N/A
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Origin: Sunyshore City
Appearance: 6’ 1” | 131lbs
Personality: Meticulous and careful in everything he does, Tobias is someone who likes to take his time with things and think through a course of action. He doesn’t like to even make a start at something unless he has all of the steps thought out ahead of time, so that he can complete things thoroughly and on the first try. This gives him a high rate of success in the things he tries but at the same time he has a problem with over-planning above and beyond what is needed.
Despite his outwardly calm appearance he is someone who is driven to do his best and can be surprisingly stubborn and passionate about things. While this spurs him on to give his best effort he can sometimes become fixated on a goal of it is something he is having difficulty with; as such he is someone who at times has difficulty letting things go.
In interactions with others he is best described as reserved and cool; he is not outwardly emotive or expressive which makes it hard for people to tell what he is feeling most of the time. At the same time his manner of speaking sometimes comes across as short or abrupt, even rude, but this is not to say he is unkind or uncaring; he just doesn’t often show his kinder side to those he has just met.
Short Biography: The son of an engineer and a teacher, an only child, Tobias grew up in the coastal city of Sunyshore. His parents were often busy with their respective professions, either working long hours or bringing their work home with them respectively, but always made sure that at least one of them was free to spend time with him when he was young. Usually this was his mother, the teacher, who was home more often than her husband even if she sometimes had to work even then; as a result Tobias was closer to her than his father.
Often she would read to him, or teach him things, and as he grew older he would be the one reading or they would read together. She instilled in him a love of books and of learning and even when his parents weren’t around he was usually reading by himself rather than playing with children his own age. His father meanwhile, when he was around, taught Tobias how to think; how to rationalise, how to break problems down and solve them piece by piece, how to tackle unknown situations; it might have been different from what most fathers taught their sons, but he gave Tobias an engineer’s mind-set to go along with his love of learning.
During Gym Challenge season he would also spend time at the Sunyshore gym, mostly out of a lack of anything else to do and also because like any kid he had an interest in Pokémon. He didn’t have any aspirations of becoming a Pokémon trainer at this point but he enjoyed the spectacle of the battles and he enjoyed cheering for his hometown’s gym leader all the same. However over time he started watching the battles more closely, paying attention to the strategies involved more than the showiness of it all; he began to notice things. Each trainer had their own way of doing things, their own approach and their own plan; some succeeded and others didn’t, some were too weak and others strong enough, some he could see adapt and adjust their plans when things went wrong and others he saw stick to their plans and fail.
Pokémon battles were a lot more complicated than he had first thought. They were a complex and dynamic puzzle as much as they were a test of strength, probably more so.
From the moment of this realisation onwards Tobias was set on becoming a trainer. He couldn’t even say why exactly, but it was like a fire had been lit under him and it was something that he had to do. At age fifteen he obtained his first Pokémon, a Magnemite given to him by his father, and he began training in earnest. At age seventeen he approached the Sunyshore gym leader and asked him for a recommendation.
"Don’t fall behind me here. Or do, this is a competition after all."
Name:Roxxane “Carmen” Rowe
Nicknames:Carmen, Roxy
Age:18
Gender:Female
Origin:Hearthhome City
Appearance: Standing at an average height of 5’8” and weighing roughly 144 lbs, Roxxane often goes towards the eccentric when it comes to looks. She has to constantly dye her hair to maintain that vibrant red look, and her stunning yellow eyes are thanks to contacts, which cover up the normal hazel underneath. Her skin is lightly tanned thanks to training out in the sun, and she does her best to make sure her clothing is spotless and clean.
Personality:
Roxxane is a naturally curious individual who would gladly embrace a challenge with open arms and a smug smile. She’s, by all means, a very driven and hardworking individual that holds herself in high regard to the point where it may come off as egotistical or narcissistic, but that’s not the case, she simply believes in her own worth. This pride drives her a bit too much and is often a sure way to get on her nerves if tormented on it. Of course, she won’t show that it’s getting to her immediately, preferring to smile and making note of who’s wronged her for later.
When it comes to interacting with others, she does her best to be approachable with an outstretched arm and a pat on the back. She likes getting to know other people, but chances are most people don’t like her sarcastic, teasing nature. This often gets her into trouble, as she often will say what’s on her mind before apologizing if she realizes she messed up. If pushed too hard away by someone who doesn’t want her company, she’ll back off for the moment and give the person some space. If pushed to her breaking point, however, she’ll likely drop the nice guy act in the heat of the moment and get fired up with them. And in battle, she drops the smile for a cocky smirk and toys with the opponent in an attempt to get their guard down so she can take advantage of it. She doesn’t mean any harm by it, but if put into a desperate situation she may say something she’ll regret later.
This duality often comes into play with her style in battle; Roxxane is all about playing it safe early on in order to fully exploit the opponent’s weaknesses later with hyper-aggressive maneuvers. Which is to say, she’s on the defensive at first to understand the opponent, and then the offense when she notices their flaws. Adding onto this she has a fiery competitive spirit with a no-lose mentality, so don’t expect any pity. She also can’t keep her mouth shut in battle either in an attempt to distract her opponent.
Short Biography: Roxxane is the middle child of a family of four, born and raised right in Hearthhome City to a father who was a popular coordinator and a mom who helped run a bakery that specializes in poffins. It was easy for her to be unnoticed by her parents who are active and not always at home, so naturally, she took every opportunity to watch them at work. When she was younger, she often followed her mother in the bakery, endlessly watching her hard at work and constantly being scolded when Roxxane attempted to “help”. She would make special batches for her father, and Roxxane often had the pleasure of delivering them to the contest hall to her father.
The perks of delivering poffins to a coordinator, you get to watch them in action when they’re busy. It was at the contest hall that Roxxane was able to see a myriad of Pokemon and styles. In a contest, she realized it was more than just looking pretty, and her father was able to display immense strength and power while also impressing the judges with dazzling displays of what Roxxane could only call art. She felt a calling here, and when she felt he was old enough, she asked her father to train her.
But by then, her father was too busy to deal with his daughter, opting to have one of his friends show Roxxane the ropes. Roxxane’s mentor was a fiery, passionate, manipulative woman who was a surprisingly excellent teacher and famous coordinator. It was this woman that told Roxxane she needed to change her style, and even gave her a stage name Carmen so that she wouldn’t be compared to her father. Eager to learn, Roxxane absorbed all that her mentor had to offer over the years, earning herself a name in the contest industry for her unique team combinations and riling up her opponents to get them to slip up. Even so, she often struggled to think of interesting displays to impress the judges in the first rounds, but if she could manage that, she’d sweep the competition in the battles that came.
It was because of this that her career began to stagnate. She realized she loved the battling more than she did the art, but was unsure as to how to change or what she should do. She didn’t want to give up on her fans or her ego, and she had gained quite the fan base by now. Her mentor, who had retired and become a judge instead, noticed this change and how Roxxane had begun to slip up in the competitions. If she kept it up her career would be ruined. So one day after she lost another contest, her mentor made a deal.
She was influential enough to get Roxxane an endorsement in the gym challenge, and her mentor knew Roxxane had what it took to compete with her battle prowess. It was a way out of being a coordinator, but more than that, it was a way to keep her fans and have them support her in a different manner. She could shine brighter than before, and now she had the proper stage to do so.
Pokemon:
Name:Pele Species:Houdour Gender:Female Ability:Flash Fire Personality:Loyal, obedient, playful, aggressive. Move Set:Ember, Fire Spin, Smog, Bite.
Summary:A candid, sly coordinator who wants a change of pace from contest life. Other: None atm.
