This isn't RP's you'd like to see more of on site(since some are not obscure ideas), but what are some obscure genres, ideas, plots, fandoms, etc. you'd personally love to RP?

For me, it's Cold War anything really. I've seen plenty of Cold War era RP's, but nothing that directly dealt with the Cold War itself. It's usually Vietnam War, slice of life stories about hippies, etc. I want something that deals with the political turmoil and intrigue itself. McCarthyism, subversion within the Eastern Bloc, espionage, etc. Heck, even slice of life stuff dealing with the challenges associated with living under an authoritarian communist regime(I love dystopian fiction and this is pretty close).

Fandom-wise, I also think a RP set in the universe of The Man in the High Castle would be fun. Plenty of potential for all sorts of different types of plots there.

I think period pieces in general. Even if the idea is mundane enough, it seems if you add "1960s" or "1980s" onto it it suddenly makes that mundane idea into a niche, obscure one. People are too afraid to research or deepen an idea with period flavor.

This is sadly pretty accurate. I think a lot of people genuinely do fear any historical RP's because it requires doing research. There's no harm in researching things. I mean, I just had to look up SS and Gestapo ranks for a RP I'm doing on another site that is set in Nazi Germany. It was actually kind of fun just for the sake of learning some things I hadn't known before.

That's actually the first time I've heard of Biopunk, so I can agree on it being obscure.

The idea is basically instead of technology progressing towards mechanical Biopunk prefers to use Genetical modification and from what I heard creatures that seem out of the SCP the flesh that hates

One of the stranger ones that is seldom mentioned is "savage fantasy", something of the more traditional sword and sorcery variety that is grounded more in the nature of the world itself being mythic and massive, with the characters being comparatively small in the scheme of things. The narrative is more primal and earthly, with the mysteries and mysticism, the magic itself, not being elaborated upon or explained, rather a known factor but too ethereal and distant for most to master. Many monsters and creatures themselves are based upon those living beasts historic yet drummed up to exceptional levels of power and scale, almost a sort of Stone Age fantasy but bearing obvious tropes toward traditional fantasy - noble savages, heroic barbarians, useless peasants, mad wizards and the like.

The entire genre with an overtone of "wolves at the door" niche is not often found or paid much mind. It tends to be gritty and simple individually, really only larger in its scope due to the seemingly boundless nature of the world; the exact type of thing a "sandbox narrative" aims to be. Unfortunately, given high fantasy or its derivatives et all tend to be much more popular, especially from an individual character standpoint - more interesting to write for when each person seeks different outcomes and different forms of power - this subset is almost never seen.

Honestly, it depends what I'm looking for. Oftentimes just grabbing the first thing to pop up on Google or Wikipedia will suffice.

If they're anything like most racing games I can see why.

However in saying that the movie Drive wasn't so much about the cars but more about the conflicts between people who wanted money. The main character being a race driver is only a setup for why he's got some value to his skills

I've got a racing 1x1 that's been going on for about... 5-6 years?

It's way, way harder to do in groups because you're gonna have to determine things with dice rolls and people have egos and don't like it when their characters lose.

I can understand that. With one person you do have a bit more free roam without stepping on toes. Never thought about doing dice rolls, but I suppose that would work well if you were in a group.

Still, you probably wouldn't want more than maybe 4 players I'm guessing.

I've always wanted to run a historical mystery/detective role play. Something akin to Name of the Rose, a locked room mystery set in a single local, where the players have to figure out who killed a particular NPC. Or alternatively something where everyone plays as a medieval peasant trying to find out who's responsible for acts of witchcraft taking place in their village.

The first one seems interesting enough although detective RP sounds more like something of a duo rather than a group now the second one I smell gasoline on the air on that because i know how people will generally react but who knows maybe it doesn't go so south...

What if...

What if there was a roleplay about people roleplaying...

Like the characters themselves are roleplayers, and the story is about them doing roleplays--

An RP plot that follows a group of friends playing a DND campaign. But the GM is evil and if you die in the game you die in real life.
