Still working on mine, kinda dealing with some physical health issues atm

I completely understand. Heath should be your first priority! And thank you for the update. PM if you have any questions or need help with your characters sheet!

Tired as I am, I'm still finding progress on my character to be fairly smooth. As long as I don't push it, he should come together well.

On the earlier ideas. These are my thoughts.

I agree with the general range of options and variety available. However, there's a couple things that I wanted to bring up that came to mind.

- With less large scale fishing per ocean area, the fish population will have exploded and super schools with millions of fish could easily be a thing.

- Larger fish could likely be more comfortable closer to the surface than previously known as well as being far more numerous.

- Glaciers and partially flooded caverns, sub-oceanic ones, could also make for discovery events that spark interest. Glaciers would be a source of isolated and preserved fresh water, high quality at that. Partially flooded cave systems could be home to species of crustacean that are difficult to find with current technology in the open ocean due to their preferred depth. Also, crabs would have returned to their pre-harvesting sizes. That means full scale king crab.

- The possibility also exists for illegal slave traders who execute swift night raids on settlements and slip away in the night to sell their catch elsewhere. (This would tie into my prospective character's backstory, if I manage to get organized enough to officially join.)

- Also, shark leather armor would be fairly common among those who work in rougher occupations. The tiny teeth on the outer surface would discourage creatures from latching on and the toughness of the leather would make for decent armor anyway, especially if it's backed with layers of something thinner and cheaper.

- I recommend, as a starting scene, having everyone in the docks on a day when more business is done than usual. The business justifies their presence while also getting everyone in sight of the harbor for the arrival of something notable, a ship of some kind that usually means something important. Possibly a ship flying the flag of a known group of famous cartographers and explorers. This provides factors that unify the scene and keep all the characters thinking about the same general kinds of things. It could also be used to spark conversation and further plot development.

How are your Character sheets coming along? I am super excited to read them. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to bat some ideas off me feel free to PM me. I know two of you have said you’re interested in joining but have to see how your schedules work out, and that’s totally fine. Feel free to make a CS and hop into the IC later.

Hello, again. Sorry for the earlier silence. I'm willing to join if you will have me, and I've made a basic character concept that I hope will be of some delight.

I’ve started watching Gargantia on Netflix, and it’s a bit cringey at times but most anime is let’s be honest. Kinda enjoying it though, I like the setting.

I was also thinking about some other bits and bobs that might be fun to relate to this RP; anyone ever play the game SOMA? It’s a sci-fi horror game that takes place at the bottom of the sea, stuff happens but it’s starts with a base in a trench doing science or whatever, which was something I’d immediately started thinking of adapting for the RP. Underwater settles could face so very many problems but if there’s not one rapture reference what’s the point??? Oh and Subnautica. If we can mars base we can ocean base, also the ocean is literally right there and if rich peeps had enough advance warning to build a Dominus they very well could have done the same thing underwater as above- or even underground; make your doomsday bunker airtight and self sustaining, maybe some access to pull fresh air from a much more elevated point... you get the idea.

Also AI, are those a thing yet? Could they be a thing like say on the Syans or from Mars? What about new species of critter? I know my ambiguous venomous white serpent went down without comment, and while I vaguely based it on actual sea snakes I didn’t research it at all, and there are sea monster esque images on the Pinterest board, anything else like that around?

I wanted to ask about NPCs too, like who plays them and what does adoptable even mean really? Like is that somebody taking them on as a main character or as a minor secondary character?

And since I was chatting about Netflix I have a recommendation for everyone because Kipo is an amazing little show that just came out and it’s so good!

@Ceta de Cloyes

As far as the inspiration I got from Gargantia, it was the ships they are living on, and how they collect rain. Things like that. The mecha robot things are a no go for this RP.

I've never play SOMA, base on the google images, it looks like an underwater settlement horror? As for settlements underwater for this RP, that could totally be a thing, but I am kind of hesitant because there is already a lot going on as far as places.

I don't really know what you mean by rapture reference. The great flood and natural/man made disasters that covered the earth would have been considered biblical or "gods wrath" by those who were religious at the time.

AI more then Siri or an Amazon Alexa was not established before the end. They could have been created on the Mars colony, but it was not shared on earth. So the people that crash landed form Mars would have knowledge of it, but they wouldn't actually have the tech.

There are new creatures of the deep, scary sea creatures, new fishes, and gigantic animals that once were small, like turtles or something.

As for NPC, they are basically Characters that are around that no one is officially claimed or are playing as their own, so we as players can use them as we wish in our IC writing. For instance I would write as Iris walking around the Docks, and can converse with an NPC who is selling wares or something. Adoptable means that if someone wants to take the NPC and make an official CS for them, then they are claiming that NPC as an official Character of their own to play. It is basically someone taking them on as a main character.

Rapture is a reference to a game set in an underwater... failed attempt at one man's utopia. The games set there were in the Bioshock series. Big theme there was wild genetic manipulation... nasty and extreme stuff.

Okay okay, thanks for the answers!

I’m not suggesting you add more settlements or anything, just that maybe in the future it could be an interesting find for our chars that no one saw coming. I mean who would live on the bottom of the ocean right?

SOMA is spooky shizz and deffo worth a look at. Rapture is the underwater city from Bioshock.

Lowkey I want murlocs lmao.

I would love to see some completed Character Sheets!!!! I would also really love to start up the IC this week, so as soon as two more characters are accepted, that will be happening. Though I will still leave the RP open for new players. I don't want to rush people, but its almost been 2 weeks since the OOC was created.

Usually I have no problem bashing out a CS in a day or two but for this RP it took me like a week. Maybe it's because the world is so in-depth and different and it took me a while to figure out how to make everything fit? What's everyone else's most difficult part of character creation so far, I wanna compare notes!

(The most difficult part of this guy... was figuring out where he had been. He's so much older than anybody else that I had to factor in the years of travel. At present, the uncontested old man of the group...)

Name: Darse Finlure

Age: 38

Race: Blue-Blood

Occupation: Bone Crafter/Tanner/Fisherman

Personality: Steady, patient, tenacious, when a choice is made it should be followed through properly. Life is like a powerful current. It's hard if you fight it, easy if you follow it, and it will smash you against rocks when it chooses. A man should be gentle with friends, careful with strangers, and ruthless with enemies.

Religion: Agnostic

Skills:
-Komunaj: Speaking, Reading and Writing
-Engrae: Speaking
-Arithmetic
-Fishing with nets and spears
-Universal familiarity with knives
-Capable with a harpoon
-Bone/Teeth carving/working
-Tanning (aquatic creatures)
-Black Bone Blade Forging
-Cooking
-Fish Processing
-Ocean Product Processing
-Sea legs mastery (He's very sure footed on deck, regardless of weather or surf)
-Navigation (Astral, compass, chart)
-Simple boat repair
-Swimming
-Water Fighting (surface or submerged)
-Reading intent

Weapons: Black Bone Blade long knife (11" blade), BBB spear (6' long, aluminum rod with BBB spearhead)

Items:
-Bushel Bucket of shark teeth & small bones
-Slim drag nets x3 for small-average fish
-Tangle nets x2 for sharks and other large prey
-Hanging net for storing bone fish hooks and decorative pieces made from bone or tooth, 16 pieces ready for sale
-13 tanned shark leather
-Box of simple repair tools: Hammer, pry bar, brushes, sealing tar, etc.
-Leather lined box of mysterious jars (Materials for BBB forging)
-Spare work leather outfit and several simple undergarments

Boat/Home: Darse inherited his master's ship, an unnamed raft/boat that he later called "Memoria". It resembles a raft in the shape of a ray with two aluminum sails that resemble parachutes in shape, standing on poles with a small cabin between them. The deck is well treated shark leather placed with the rough side up and firmly anchored to the metal frame that is welded to the four hulls below. (Do not walk on it barefoot, you'll end up with bloody feet.) It has four strong but narrow hull sections placed evenly in parallel from one side to the other. There are concealed compartments for cargo with water-tight doors in various places on the deck.

Description: Tanned and hardened by years of exposure to the elements, Darse stands at 5'7 and weighs 160lbs. Neither bulky nor thin, his lithe muscle shows its worth in the efficient movements of his well proportioned limbs. His dark hair is crudely cut, shows signs of long exposure to salt and wind and hangs no longer than his jaw which is most comfortable closed. His eyes are a deep brown, nearly black to a casual glance, and are usually shadowed by his thick black eyebrows and long eyelashes. His face is weathered and, along with his worn hands, makes him look older than he is while his movements make one think that he's younger. For clothing, he wears simple and cheap cloth undergarments of whatever fabric was cheap enough at the time with soft shark leather boots, leggings, vest, and bracers. The leather comes from fairly common sharks and has no pattern beyond slight shading, shifting from pale gray to a deep blue-grey.
