Video Start
A young woman appears on-screen, sitting in a chair in a room that must have been cleared out for this occasion. Hardwood floors, a yoga mat rolled up just barely in frame. Natural lighting is coming from her left, a leafy potted plant to her right. An empty glass sits within a few inches of the wooden chair she sits in.
As for the girl, dirty blonde hair contrast gunmetal gray eyes, a powerful gaze on an otherwise small person. Her skin is tan, and from what can be gathered from sight she has the physique of an athlete. There is a headband keeping her hair tight back and she wears her favorite competition outfit: custom black and white training shorts and shirt with a black leotard underneath, and a bold pink stripe crossing the shorts and shirt. She is poised, ready to answer any questions that come her way.
An official-sounding voice speaks from off-screen, likely the online application interviewer.
"Good morning, Miss Weyland."
Cheyenne inhales sharply and her shoulders push back so her chest is puffed out. "Good morning, sir!"
"Let's start with the basics. Please state your name, age, and alias if you have one."
With a slight nod in understanding she says, "Of course. My name is Cheyenne Weyland. I am 18, turning 19 in June. I've, uhh, adopted the name Murmur. For my alias." Her hands are crossed on her lap, though her fingertips fidget a little. She remains still otherwise.
"Good. Where are you from?"
"Hawaii. Born and raised."
"What can you tell me about yourself?"
"I am a student. Not just academically, but I would say in life, too. The moment I stop learning is when I take my last breath." Her eyes shift to the floor as she seems to adjust herself mentally. A scoff escapes her lips, followed by a shaking of her head and a smile. "I mean, we can always improve. Our soft skills, our hard skills. I want to always improve. That's why I have taken up martial arts, American Sign Language, cooking. Anything that lets me become a better person."
"Inspiring. Why would you choose New York Bay University?"
"Well, it's obvious right?" Her expression and body language soften, giving a small shrug. "Nobody outside myself can train me better than NYBU can. The programs are state-of-the-art, the teachers are pro heroes, there's freedom in being a student there."
"Thank you for your confidence and admiration. Why are you interested in becoming a hero?"
Cheyenne stares at the lens, her fingers quietly pulling at the ends of her shorts. "To help people? I mean, it's--" She seems frustrated, as though she rehearsed her answers but wants to say something else. "We need more heroes, now more than ever. I want to do what I can because I know I can succeed. I can save people." A pause lulls in the air, the girl clearly waiting for a response or if she should continue. "I'm interested because someone is hurt everyday. And I -- I want to stop as much pain as I can."
The interviewer finally speaks again. "Alright. Time to talk about your quirk. What is it called? And can you demonstrate here?"
The young woman nods and bends over in her chair to reach the glass filled with nothing but air. She closes her eyes and states clearly, "My Quirk is called Hush." Her eyes open slowly as she lifts the glass high above her head, over the hardwood floor. "I can create zones of silence either with me at the source or at a remote location for a limited time. Any frequency that attempts to flow through these zones are instantly dissipated and anybody inside will be unable to hear anything. No sound can be produced inside, either. I can also affect objects or people that I tap so that they produce no noise for a limited time as well." Still holding the glass up high, she taps the side of it with one of her fingers and allows it to slip from her hand. It falls quickly to the hardwood floor and shatters -- without a single pop of noise. Her hand returns to her lap calmly and she just barely visibly bites her lip.
"Well done!" To this, Cheyenne fights back a smile. "Next, can you tell me your personal strengths or weaknesses?"
"Well, one of my strengths is physical. I practice martial arts, yoga, and weight lifting every day. I'm not enhanced by my Quirk but I'm actually in the next weight class up for sparring. I have placed top five in Quirkless competitions consistently ever since I began when I was eight. Mentally, I'd say I am very focused. I like to plan out my days and follow a schedule, coordinating with others. I'm very organized! Cheyenne folds her hands but her right foot taps a few times, her training shoes making just enough noise for her to take notice and quit. "People tell me they like my energy. Like, I'm a good partner for projects, missions, or even just friendships!"
"And your weaknesses?"
"Oh! Umm, well I might get too focused. Tunnel vision, my dad's told me. I also get ahead of myself a lot and assume everyone is always up to the challenges I am." Her gaze drifts away as she considers. "I say I try to improve and take constructive criticism well, but I take it personally. Sometimes really hard. Like I failed."
"I see. How about hobbies or interests?"
With a giggle and a quick shake of her head, she smiles at the lens. "Mostly what I've already gone over. Martial arts, fighting, running. I also like hiking, rock climbing. Going to the movies is fun, too! But mostly I like to move and exert myself. It's better if I have someone to compete with."
"Active lifestyle. Do you have any family you would like to mention?"
"Yes! My dad, Cid, and my mom, Charlene. I have an older brother who works in security in New Mexico, Chance, and a younger sister in middle school, Cat. Catherine. I'm gonna miss them when I make it there to New York." She flashes a grin.
"Great! Well this part of your application comes to a close with that. Any questions before we end it here?"
Cheyenne's eyes wander the room for a second. "Are there any ponies at the school?"
"I'm not obligated to disclose that. Thank you for your application!"
