As exists in many legends and folk tales across different cultures, there is another realm that exists alongside our own: that of Faerie, the realm of the fae. It is a place of magic and myth, and the times that it bleeds into our world (or ours into it) has been the inspiration of fairy tales and legends throughout history. Many types of magical creatures exist there, not only limited to those resembling European myth. In modern times, these creatures- anything sentient and humanoid but distinctly non-human- have come to call themselves fae, to differentiate them from humans. However, these creatures take many, many forms, not just limited to that of a classic "fairy" type creature, though those do exist as well. Creatures such as kitsune, merfolk, and dragons would refer to themselves as fae as well. Some types of fae were once human, changed by magical curses or blessings or other forms of magic, or by mixed parentage. Vampires, lycans, and windigos are examples of some half-fae beings.

Humans exist in Faerie as well, whether natively or populations built up from individuals that were "stolen away" by the fae. Because Faerie is eternally caught in a medieval, fairy-tale like time period and culture, humans from Faerie are culturally (and sometimes physically) quite a bit different from modern humans from our world, sometimes having a little bit of their own magic in their blood. Any human who is able to use magic (usually those from Faerie, though due to travel between realms and cross-breeding, humans from Earth may rarely be born with the ability to use magic) is referred to as a witch regardless of gender. Similarly, regular humans with no innate ability who learn how to use magical artifacts (but with no inherent magic of their own) are called wizards, regardless of gender.

There are a great number of different kinds of fae, some of which may not even have a specific name for their species, or who are almost entirely unique. Often times, these creatures will still try to find some rough equivalent of creature in Earth lore to call themselves, if for no other reason than to have a name to tell people when they inevitably ask what they are.

Fairygate Academy is a school set up for those who wish to travel and live in a realm different from the one where they were born: that is, humans from Earth who wish to live in Faerie, and fae (and Faerie-born humans) who wish to live on Earth. There are generally more of the latter than the former. The existence of Faerie is secret on Earth, and kept that way carefully, and for that reason, very few humans are even aware of its existence, let alone wanting to immigrate to it. Secondly, the existence of Earth (while not necessarily common knowledge amongst all mortal communities) is not strictly secretive in Faerie, and so slightly less care needs to be taken to make sure that humans from Earth are able to blend in, thus requiring less schooling.

The Academy exists in a sort of in-between space between the realms; a bubble dimension, if you will. It appears as being a sprawling castle in a forest, surrounded by tall gray mountains. However, one may never actually reach the mountains, as traveling through the forest will only lead one to somehow circle back to the school grounds. The only way out of the dimension, except through the manifestation of extremely powerful and volatile magics that are forbidden at the school, is through the Fairy Gate at the edge of the campus. These gates are always guarded by gargoyles, and students may only travel to locations they have a Gatecard for. All students, by default, have Gatecards for their home locations on their home world, but additional cards can only be gained when a student is either considered ready to travel to the other world, or occasionally for field trips (these cards typically expire after a certain amount of time). It is possible to use the Fairy Gate without a Gatecard, but it is very, very difficult to control where you end up, with a great margin of error depending on the experience and mental discipline of the user, even so far as to end up on the completely wrong world.

The Academy does act as a boarding school, though students are not required to live on campus and may very well go home each day. However, excessive use of the Fairy Gate can lead to mild sickness- mainly nausea, headaches, and exhaustion, but extreme use can have even greater health impacts- and so most students do choose to live on campus at least part time. As a general rule, it is not recommended to use the Gate more than twice a day.

The classes at Fairygate Academy primarily serve to teach its students about life in the other world. For Earth-native humans looking to travel to Faerie, classes range from culture and history classes to politics, swordplay, fae types and behaviors, survival, and any other topics and skills they may need to navigate the fantasy-esque landscape of Faerie. Many of these classes, besides the ones regarding background knowledge of the world, focus on survival, defense, and crafting. After all, Faerie is a far wilder land than Earth, and most modern Earth-born humans lack the necessary survival skills.

Fae and Faerie-born humans must also learn culture and history for Earth, but rather than wilderness survival and combat, they must hone skills like city navigation and technology. Some may also need to take classes on magic repression, to be able to better control and hide their powers while on Earth, and disguise themselves on human. Fae and Faerie-born humans will also create a false identity for themselves which to use on Earth- essentially an entire alter ego. Depending on where they are planning to travel, what they are planning to do, and how long they intend to stay, the necessary classes may vary quite a bit.

The school is not particularly large, usually only consisting of a handful of teachers and perhaps a few dozen students, most of whom graduate after a year or two.

This is meant to be a fairly lighthearted anime-style roleplay which follows students and teachers at the Fairygate Academy. Characters may be students or teachers (though, obviously, there should be more students than teachers) and may be fae, Faerie-born human, or Earth-born human. Fae may pretty much be any type of monster, though as a general rule, you should stick to folklore style mythical creatures (things like dragons or vampires) as opposed to modern pop-culture monsters (like Frankenstein's monster, or Godzilla). There are only a few rules that apply, and outside of that, feel free to get creative!

1. You should be consistent with whatever lore has already been established in the roleplay (so for example, if someone makes a dragon character and establishes some dragon lore as canon in this world, you would need to use the same lore for your own dragon character, though you can certainly add to). That said, there can also be variations of similar creatures, but if you are going to make variations of similar creature types (for example, multiple kinds of dragons), make sure to utilize at least some of the established lore to demonstrate how the two species are at least related.

2. Some kinds of creatures (and individuals of species) are going to be objectively more powerful than others. That's fine, and you shouldn't strive to try to always make your character the most powerful or one-up other characters. This isn't a combat game and we're not here to win in fights, just make interesting characters and a fun story. Regardless of how physically, mentally, or magically strong your character is, please try to keep particular skills and limitations on your character. While magical powers will be very free-form and you are able to get unique with them, you should definitely have some rules in mind as to how your characters' powers work, and even the strongest magical creatures will have their limits. If your powers seem too vague, incredibly inconsistent, too powerful, or it seems like you are powerplaying with them, you may be asked to change your characters' abilities (or at least better define them).

3. In terms of character creation, a few things. This is an anime roleplay about monster people, so weird appearances are fine and encouraged! Fae can pretty much look however you want (though they should either be vaguely humanoid, or have the ability to take a more humanoid shape). Faerie-born humans must look completely human except that they may have unnatural hair & eye colors (like in a typical anime). Earth-born humans must have realistic (albeit anime) appearances, including natural hair and eye colors (though, obviously, they can dye their hair and such). Secondly, characters should never be any younger than 16 years old. While this is a school roleplay, the characters are adults seeking to move to another realm, so ages can range pretty much from 16 up. Some fae could even be quite, quite old if the species is long-lived or immortal. Feel free to have fun with this.

4. Use of fantasy, fairy tale, and anime tropes not required but recommended for maximum shenanigans. Feel free to use actual fairy tales as inspiration for characters as well (for example, if you wanted to play a Faerie-born human who is just anime Snow White, go for it). In this case, though, the same rule as above applies: try to use folk tales as inspiration rather than pop culture. So for example, Snow White = yes; Elsa from Frozen = no. As a note, the folk tales do not have to be European in origin, but do be respectful of the cultures from which you pull inspiration.

What's the verdict on pop culture adaptations of long-standing mythical creatures? Ex. I have in mind a style of pixie from a game, since the general concept of a pixie seems very broad and their characteristics seem to vary from what I've seen.

Also, thoughts on an Earth-born witch looking to cross into Faerie?

I would say that for things that have broad mythological definitions (like pixies as you mentioned, or things like vampires or dragons, etc) it's fine to narrow down your definition to characteristics that are present in a particular pop culture media to make it more defined, as long as that pop culture media isn't really, really heavily changing the folklore of the creature, if that makes sense. So using dragons as an example, it would be fine to pull from Skyrim or Eragon as a way to better define the type of dragon you mean and their general abilities and characteristics, but you shouldn't use things that are highly specific to that particular version of that creature (such as Shouts or eldunari, respectively).

As for the witch, that would be fine! I would imagine they would have a fairly limited understanding and ability to use their powers at the beginning (having to mostly hide them and probably not having a ton of guidance on how to use them, except maybe from a parent or something), but as a general concept, that's allowed. It wouldn't be necessary, might it would be encouraged to also give some backstory on why a witch was born on Earth (like, if a parent or grandparent was from Faerie). But that doesn't have to be information that's known by the character.

@The Goblin King Thanks! I was thinking that yeah, some relative was originally from Faerie and settled in the human world for whatever reason, and that the family kept their practices alive, albeit secret.

The concept I have now is a male witch who wants to travel to Faerie so he can study magic further, specifically for its medicinal applications (as he wants to be a doctor of some flavour) - though I might also make him a general scholar, not sure yet. I'm thinking that while he has a better grasp on magic than most earth-born witches since his family has taken pains to preserve their knowledge, they are in the end relying on the knowledge of only one original witch (and they probably weren't even a scholar of magic), so despite preserving this information, it is still limited. I figure his idea of what Faerie is like is probably either warped or unclear, since he'd be working only on stories passed down through his family (and we all know how stories can change as they're passed along). Does that sound okay?

As for pixies, I'm thinking of basing them on the pixies in Final Fantasy XIV. In that lore, they're said to be reincarnations of dead children, so they're eternally childlike and playful, enjoying playing tricks on mortals. They're also quite possessive, often to troublesome degrees as fae creatures tend to do xD In that lore they live by a simple yet rigid code of conduct and can also make pacts with mortals, though I don't think I'd be making use of that particular mechanic. My idea was to play a trio of pixies who essentially function as one character because they're inseparable, if that's okay.

Yeah the idea for the witch sounds great. As for the pixies, I would probably drop the part about being reincarnations of children, since that seems pretty specific (that's certainly something they could believe though, but it would probably be unconfirmed at best, in terms of the species as a whole). But the rest seems fine!

@The Goblin King oh yeah, I think even in the game's lore that's more of what's said about their origins than anything concretely confirmed. I prefer a vague approach myself ^^ thanks!

Edit: at any rate, I don't think pixies give much thought to the origins of their species anyway xD that's boring!

@Randomness Elmaia sounds like she'd get along with my pixies! Though, it's possible her colony might not like them xD How would you feel about Elmaia knowing of one of my pixie's clans? One of them lived in the mountains, so it's possible their clan interacted with Elmaia's colony from time to time, probably causing mischief, playing tricks and generally being giggling little nuisances xD

@Obscene Symphony

That sounds fun actually. As for them knowing each other, it’s possible, but I assume the mountains are big and numerous. Either way I’m down. I can imagine Elmaia’s neighbors telling her she’s just as bad as those pixies.

@Randomness Haha that's perfect!

Yeah, given that the mountains are big and pixies from the same clan tend to look alike, it's probable that they don't personally know each other, but that they recognize each other as belonging to that fairy colony in the tree/that annoying clan of pixies xD
