"I recently discussed with an intelligent and well-disposed man the threat of another war, which in my opinion would seriously endanger the existence of mankind, and I remarked that only a supra-national organization would offer protection from that danger. Thereupon my visitor, very calmly and coolly, said to me: 'Why are you so deeply opposed to the disappearance of the human race?'"
- Albert Einstein, 1949

“A man sets out to draw the world. As the years go by, he peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, instruments, stars, horses, and individuals. A short time before he dies, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the lineaments of his own face.”
― Jorge Luis Borges, The Aleph and Other Stories

The year is 1955, but it is not our 1955. A generation ago the world was warped by the most violent of wars to patronize the human race. In the agonizing nations of Europe the warped alliances and stressed lurching and gnarled warping of the old competitive powers of the world finally broke 1914. A shot in Sarajevo sends the world careening into an abyss as an old empire buckles and breaks in anger. One after another, the nations of Europe and her colonies throw human life at each other in an industrialized slaughter not before seen. The flower of Europe is scorched and frayed on the fields of France, in Africa, in the Middle East, and in Asia as colonies and world spanning Empires converge upon Europe to fight under the clear unbroken sky in a violence more naked and more clear than any earlier soldier would have dreamed from the old world-spanning wars of Europe's rivalries. The smoke that scours the battlefield springs not from cannons or from rifles, but from the chemical death that rolls out from artillery as white hot smoke rolls over spider-webbed trenches to snuff out or drive out the enemy. Up until 1927 the Central and Allied powers thrust into each other seeking weakness, grinding up the flower of their youth, of generations, to attain some upper hand to the glory; though it may be said and wisely, that even by then the great giants of Europe bled themselves weak on the field and withheld their sabers for a time before.

And why is it for a full thirteen years Europe swung and shot at each other, up-ending age old traditions and customs and annihilating themselves? With the two histories of our world and theirs overlain, the fraying of the thread becomes clear. For all the devilish machinations neutrality in America is maintained! Do you see it there? And what happens in Russia? The czar retreats, wise to the plots of reformers and radicals and pulling back to put them under. Germany is relieved, the powers can refocus. The landscape shifts and come into new focus. And the war drags.

Summoned from Asia, summoned from Africa! The colonial askaris come to fight on Europe's shores and ask, “why?”

During and after: revolution, the war ends and it's bitter. Little changes, but nothing can be won. Only things can be lost. The world over changes and as the old European giants collapse into their sick beds to heal their wounds others come scrambling to claim their roost. Has this been settled? It has not. The politics change, the market has changed. The bullet remains chambered in its rifle.

Intro

Welcome to Precipice of War, you may have heard the name. Precipice of War is an old brand of Roleplay, tracing its legacy several forums ago where it was born on the old Spore forums. It changed over time as it migrated, and has been rebooted and retconned now and then. And again it's being rebooted for you. So you might be asking and for clarity's sake: what is the premise of this RP?

As a Nation RP you take on the roll of a country, its politics, and its characters. Though this has not always been the case in PoW, and we have accepted single character applications and even applications for non-government organizations. The world is set in an alternate history, where instead of a single clear and unique winner in the First World War, there is no discernible victor. Instead the war drags on excruciatingly long and then ends without a confirmed “winner” one way or the other. Ceasefires were written in 1921, but the final 1927 peace is merely a means by which to end open hostilities, containing within what minimum is needed to ensure as much. Though unilateral treaties between hostile parties are not out of the question.

For this to happen the US maintained neutrality in the war, and the Russian Empire withdrew early to quell the fermenting revolution. But for the later the price it had to pay for that was dear and despite the wise move was still eroded from within. Over the ensuing decades it became less and less capable and transformed into a pariah of itself.

Now in 1955 we pick up, and the future there is up to you. Because of World War 2 as well, it is taken as fact that the war-time developments that occurred during that war and arose from it do not exist in this RP and the world is technologically stunted. Sorry folks: no jet airplanes and no nuclear weapons for you!

Handy Timeline of Events

POW Timeline (1910-1950)

Russia: The Pariah of the North

One of the unique aspects of Precipice since the beginning was the dissolution of and destruction of Russia. As the history goes, it has devolved into a pariah of itself. While the global community recognizes the Russian Empire as existing as a single entity in respect to its borders, internally control of the country is under competition between the numerous officials and generals of the Empire while the Czar continues to rule from Saint Petersburg, having no real authority over the country. And for the intent of the RP, we are not allowing anyone to take command of the Czar, or no single person. That is why when it comes to Russia we have written a “Czar Bible” to differ to when your story archs pass through the Empire of the Rus.

As of 1955 Russia is ruled in name by Czarina Kira Kirillovna of the house of Romanov. Kira finds herself on the throne. Enthroned based on a series of bad luck events, Kira is broadly considered illegitimate by the Old Guard of Russia and is rumored to be a lesbian because of her inability to so far sire any heirs. She however has adopted a strict state machinery which has alienated the New Guard of Russian politics which has distanced themselves from her as well. Having alienated either camp, what semblance of a state she has is incredibly weak and it is necessary for her to be propped up from outside to prevent a total collapse of Europe.

Because of this, and her not being allowed to be player controlled the following is true:

- Things the Tsar would never do no matter what (and would never give any ground on for these issues):
Kira is absolutely an Anti-Communist and will not accept communist proposals or communists in government.

- Things the Tsar would only do under great pressure and even then reluctantly
Kira is incredibly reluctant to give up her absolute authority and, only being forced to give up power to The Duma under great duress and pressure, but will jump at taking back powers from The Duma.

- Things the Tsar would feel indifferent about and leave to others to sort out
Distribution of Russian territory to foreign adventurers on the pretense they are there to quell the imperial unrest

- Things the Tsar would feel is none of her business and avoid making a choice about
Kira is internationally indifferent, if anything just leaving international affairs to vacationing.

- Things the Tsar would support
Kira would support fellow Absolutists and particularly generals that support the Czar

- Things the Tsar would vehemently defend, to the death if need be
The Orthodox Church

Addition to the Bible will be made by player consensus as the RP progresses. If a new situation arises that is not addressed by the Bible, we will discuss what the most likely course of action she will take and add it to the Bible. The hopes being as things move along an organic and consistent-enough NPC character will develop as everyone fucks around with Russian internal politics. Otherwise: players are free to play as their own autonomous or independent rebellious groups within Russia itself as they are outside of it.

The Map and Nation Claim

(the map may include nations filled in for lore reasons specific to a particular player, but does not mean any of these nations are ran by the player who requested them filled out in any way, shape, or form)

Already claimed Nations:
Federal Republic of China (blue) – AaronMk
Germany (brown) – Yam I Am
Mexico (Green) – EvanTheCat
Argentina (Tourqouis) – Wyrm

The basic application format if you're actually committed is:

Nation: (Or name, or name of organization if you are playing as an individual or a non-state based organization

Map: (Or location of residence for the character, or where the organization is headquartered)

History:

And while I am loath to give out a Discord link this early, for any planning purposes since many of us have finished applications already, and we'd love to work you in, or you work us in. Whatever agreement is reached.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

"It's called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it."

HISTORY
Once the Great War finally ended, the United States of America was in the midst of a growing labor movement. President Wilson, an anti-labor, began drifting plans to crush the movement before it grew out of control. And then, the Industrial Workers of the World announced a general strike, where all the workers united to get their demands met. Wilson immediately got to work in crushing the strike with help from police departments and the military. Then, Presidents Harding and Coolidge began chipping away unions and labor rights.

President Herbert Hoover won the 1929 election with plans on doing the same things, angering the pro-labor movement again. However, he was forced to maintain the European aid mission and subsidies to farmers pushed by his predecessors causing the booms of the twenties. But then, the crash of 1929 happened followed by the Dust Bowl. With those factors, Hoover put an end to the aid mission while attempted to raise agricultural tariffs, but led to the signing of the Tariff Act of 1930. But, he still didn't want the government to be involved enough since he believed in laissez-faire. Many experts expected Hoover to lose his 1932 reelection campaign.

Even known faith in Hoover was long gone, Americans were still hopeful that a Republican President would undo the damage. Their trust went to one person in particular: Henry Wallace. A farmer from Iowa, Wallace campaigned on the promise of major agricultural reforms and an answer to the anti-labor Democrats. And he won the 1932 election in a landslide. That caused wealthy businessmen and several Democrats to be concerned. So, after Election Day, in the act of desperation, they gathered, discussed, and followed through with a plan that eventually led to the incident became known as The Business Plot.

General Douglas MacArthur marched into Washington D.C. and arrested Wallace without reason. On Inauguration Day, Americans watched in surprise as MacArthur was sworn into a temporary presidency. Nearly every member of the Congress and Senate remained silent on the matter. Left-wing third-parties organized widespread protests in response. Those that remained vocal in the legislative branch still received no responses from MacArthur. Meanwhile, a committee was formed with the task of finding a suitable replacement for the presidency.

After two weeks of discussion, the committee put forward Everett McKee, a right-wing political figure from Oklahoma. The Republican Party denounced the choice and called for a general strike across the nation. But, there were supporters, like Charles Lindbergh and William Pelley, that backed the new president. Infighting occurred in Washington D.C., lasting for three days until the Silver Legion of America (led by William) arrived to establish control. Fearful of arrest and harm, several Republicans, Democrats, and third-party officials fled the city and went into hiding. Their fears were correct when the headquarters of the Socialist Party of America brunt to the ground while their members either perished in the fire or were arrested shortly after. Fortunately, most of the members (including the party's leadership) fled the night before. Now in control, President McKee invited Pelley to be his vice president after his performance in D.C. Then, he outlawed third parties in the country, focusing on the SPA and the IWW.

Vice President Pelley incorporated the Silver Shirts and the Black Guard (known as the Black Legion, a popular militia part of the Klan) into the U.S. military. Several military generals were concerned about the indications, including Major General Smedley Butler. Two months after the coup d'état, Butler attempted to assassinate President McKee and Vice President Pelley and free Wallace from prison. The week-long coup d'état failed horribly, resulting in the deaths of Butler and Wallace along with the purge of the military afterward.

The entire purge, known as The Great Cleansing, lasted from 1933 to 1936, which targeted military officials from the army to the air force. And it gave more power and influence to the Silver Legion and the Klan throughout the country, especially in the South. When the 1936 election happened, Long won by a long shot to his Democratic and Republican opponents across the country. Although, some suspected that imitation and voter suppression played a major role in his victory. For the second term, President McKee sought to dismantle antitrust laws and empower capitalist politics to combat the Great Depression.

Then, in 1939, a third and final coup d'état was organized by the resistance group using the name "Sons of Liberty." Unlike Butler's Revolt, this coup dealt a devastating blow with McKee's death and Pelley's serious injury. Thought, it ended with the resistance fighters killed or arrested by Brigadier General Charles Lindbergh and General Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur offered to maintain the presidency until the 1940 election, which was only a few months away. Everyone hesitated to allow MacArthur to run the county; however, once Lindbergh backed the idea, all of them agreed.

The Republican Party sought out Lindbergh and asked him to be the replacement Republican nominee after learning of Pelley's injuries. Lindbergh accepted the nomination with Gerald Smith becoming the vice present nominee shortly after. Being the first pilot to make a nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, he was already an icon to the world—including Americans. But his actions during the Savannah Spring only made him more popular with the American people. And the live broadcast of the trials and executions of the Sons of Liberty members boosted that popularity.

And once the dust had settled, President Lindbergh and Vice President Gerald Smith managed to secure enough votes to win the 1940 election (rumors surfaced that they also used imitation and voter suppression). Their first action was to layout the foundations of a new government program with the ultimate goal of ensuring that every American had work. However, the program remained in the drafts because of the potential constitutional issues it faced.

Fifteen years passed; the year is 1955, where Lindbergh and Smith have achieved the longest presidential term in the country's history. And yet, they are still changing the United States. The newly created Federal Security and Intelligence Agency has essentially become a secret police with influence from the Legion and Klan. Some argued that FSI was unconstitutional, while the majority, including Lindbergh, established that it wasn't only constitutional but necessary to deal with threats to American values. And it's director, J. Edgar Hoover refuses to testify in the Senate with the support of the Lindbergh.

Meanwhile, the mysterious government program is set to finally be revealed on the White House lawn. With the 1956 election getting closer, rumors are spreading that both major politicians are starting to worry that Lindbergh will seek out a sixth term. But, those in power either only care about themselves or have become too scared to speak up. However, there are rumors of resistance fighters hiding throughout the country, waiting for the day to strike and bring back democracy.

It's a Poland. Mostly along the borders drawn up for Yam's German History under the Treaty of Minsk, the treaty that the Russians signed with the Germans to get out of the war. Final borders can change, since there's still a chance for stuff between now and then and I think he'll be fine with changes to Poland. There'll probably be details when he posts his application.

Otherwise during the whole planning phase he had put together a time-line of events that I have to get off my ass and post

@Dinh AaronMk Just to ask, out of curiosity at least, has anyone claimed the Ottomans or Ottoman lands?

Nope. They're free. If because during planning I was trying to push more for Europe's representation over the ME.

@Dinh AaronMk Noted! But to ask out of curiosity...would you mind a Byzantine/Greek rebellion that 'restores' the old Byzantine Empire and took some stuff from the Ottomans? Like a historical "what if", taking the Ottomans at their lowest and basically pulling a "Greco-Rome Returns"? Or maybe it was during the war or...er, something. It is a fun idea to me, but i want to ask to get your thoughts on it! :O

Using Greece after WW2 as a model, it went through an insane period of revolution and counter-revolution and coup and counter-coup. It wouldn't be unusual in PoW for Greece to spring up during the war and pry some land from the Turks. And after the war, even without the Byzantine trim do all the Byzantine politics, lol

THE REPUBLIC OF ARGENTINA

"A revolution is not a bed of roses. A revolution is a struggle between the future and the past."

HISTORY
Argentina tangoed through the Great War more or less unscathed, maintaining close ties with their ancestral homeland and reaping the benefits of the near impossible rise of Spanish power on the world stage.

In 1928, current president Hipólito Yrigoyen wins the national election; running on promises of extensive reforms to labor rights. His victory agitates the fractured conservative factions in Argentina, who began plotting to overthrow a sitting president for the first time since the Argentine Constitution of 1853.

Buoyed by their close ties with Spain, the Argentines let the good times roll. The flamenco was alive and well, guitars had never been so popular. The sturdy matron of the hacienda began to give way to the devastating beauty of the sassy señorita. Football was exploding on a national stage and no weekend was complete without at least one car getting torched by a victorious mob.

Eager to capitalize on the nations energy, and after months of plotting, a pro-fascist coup lead by army general José Félix Uriburu was launched against the Yrigoyen government in 1930. However, the plot was swiftly detected and Uriburus efforts quickly thwarted. After such a humiliating failure, the Argentine military was quick to dissociate all ties with Uriburu. In the end he, and a dozen officers supportive of the coup, were summarily executed to much fanfare.

Yrigoyen, now paranoid about further plots, established a repressive regime that included for the first time the systematic use of torture against political opponents, particularly anarchists, communists, and radical Uriburuionists, using the Sector of Public Order of the Capital Police, with Leopoldo Lugones, Jr. at the helm. Yrigoyen declared martial law and secretly executed anarchist militants such as Severino Di Giovanni, Gregorio Galeano, José Gatti, Joaquín Penina, Paulino Scarfó and Jorge Tamayo Gavilán.

Yrigoyen became bolder by 1935 and imprisoned several political leaders, censured news publications; and took over the nation's universities, eliminating the autonomy and co-government that they had enjoyed since the University Reform of 1918. The only institution that remained largely unchanged was the Argentine Military; still considered a scared institution by the people.

In 1936, in an effort to maintain power without angering powerful military generals, Yrigoyen officially raised his own personal militia and began to wield them against the population. His actions and lust for power would eventually lead to war with Paraguay in 1937. This war, fought largely by the militia loyal to Yrigoyen, dragged on for nearly ten years. Over half of Paraguays population would end up killed or missing before their surrender in 1946.

Buoyed by the success of the Argentine economy and their links with Spain, the Argentinian middle class began to grow and expand, investing heavily in neighbouring countries until the likes of Chile and Uruguay found themselves facing nearly fifty percent ownership by Argentinian firms. Even Brazil, long a powerhouse, found itself sliding into the shadow of Argentina as several small naval "incidents" resulted in the sinking of most of Brazils Navy and a semi-permanent Naval blockade enacted by the military leadership.

Over the next eight years, Yrigoyen would antagonize his neighbours and even the Spanish who, fed up with his rash actions and blatant cruelty, quietly let it be known in military circles that they would support his removal. For many army generals the very idea is out of the question but to the young, it is a challenge.

As the mid-1950's dawn there is no in doubt in anyones mind that something big is coming. Yrigoyen balances on a knifes edge as he plots his next move. To arrest military officers is to invite retaliation, but the rumours of a possible coup cannot be ignored and so he must act.

Speaking of the timeline, here it is if you want to learn more about the rough idea of what happened before 1955. It's subject to change, but it's solid for the most part.

L'Union Indochinoise

The Indochinese Union (French Indochina)

History:
Following the formal expulsion of the Japanese from Vietnam and their surrender, as well as its transfer to France in 1944, tensions immediately began to surface in the region as fears began to grow of the restoration of a French presence in Southeast Asia. France, though technically only occupying Vietnam again under a tentative agreement, immediately began to restore a heavy military presence in the region.

Following Japanese invasion of Indochina, the area had given rise to significant communist militias under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, founder of the Indochinese Communist Party. Ho had intentions of creating an independent Vietnam following the expulsion of the Japanese, however his efforts were being hampered by the restoration of French administration over the region.

In 1945, the French formally abolished the Monarchy in place ruling their Protectorate, paving the way for more direct rule over Vietnam, a stepping stone to retaking lost territory. This prompted an immediate revolt, in which Ho Chi Minh to declare his own Democratic Republic of Vietnam, in opposition to French rule. But before September's end, a force of British, French, along with captured Japanese troops, restored French control. Ho Chi Minh was called in for negotiations for the end of the war, only to be arrested and publicly executed by French forces. The death of Ho created a power vacuum in the Communist, anti-French forces, as the formerly unified militia began to fragment as commanders vied for power and control, creating disorganized factions that were easily taken care of by the heavy French military presence. With the threat of a communist uprising nullified, the monarchy abolished, and no further threats present, the French began a further campaign to completely restore French rule over their former colony.

Following restoring complete control over Vietnam, the threat of communist insurgency was used as justification to transition the territories over to direct French rule, separating Vietnam into three distinct regions: Tonkin in the the north and Annam in the center, both placed under direct French rule, and a region of Champa, being made as an "autonomous state" for the Muslim Cham minority of southern Vietnam, relocating non-Muslim ethnic groups from Champa northward, scattering them across Annam and Tonkin in a series of deportations.

In May of 1947, the French began to make claims of remnants of the Communist militias being given shelter in the Kingdom of Cambodia, prompting the French to begin a military invasion of Cambodia, deposing the then King, and putting a new monarch on the throne, and forcing him to integrate Cambodia into a protectorate of France. The following year, the French made a similar offer to the King of Laos, suggesting that he voluntarily submit to operating as a French protectorate and allow them to root out Communist insurgents in the area, or face outright military invasion if he was suspected of harboring enemies of the French.

By 1950, the French formally abolished the monarchies of Cambodia and Laos, replacing them with "autonomous governors" who reported back to Paris directly. In an effort to take pressure off of their expansionist acquisitions of former colonial territory, the French announced that they would grant Indochina a special status as an "overseas territory" increasing autonomy for Indochina while having it ruled by a territorial government under France.

Entering into the 50s, Indochina has been increasingly unstable as the French make use of its resources, while nationalist sentiments began to increase. The powder keg has finally ignited in 1955, as a nationalist uprising has sprung up in Laos, seeking to restore the Monarchy. All the while, whispers of other nationalist movements, and a restored socialist sentiment, inspired by the current uprising in Laos, have caused the French to take action against insurgency in their colonial territories. At the moment, the unrest is being handled by the local government of Indochina, however, it may soon come that the Mainland French government themselves will need to get involved.
