November is coming closer, which means NaNoWriMo will start soon.

For those who don't know yet: NaNoWriMo is the National Novel Writing Month, an international writing event in which the goal is to write 50.000 words during November. If you reach this goal, you will be a NaNoWriMo winner! There are rules in place: it has to be a new story and it has to be (fan)fiction. Unless you decide to be a rebel and do your own thing, that is allowed as well.

October is the month for the planners to finish their outline, for the plantser to somewhat know what they are going to do and maybe write a bit of an outline, and for the pantsers to look forward to start writing.

In this thread the NaNoWriMos of Roleplayers guild can get together and talk about their project, encourage each other and enjoy the event together.

Also, announcing your project in this thread will allow you to claim the Tell The World badge!

I will join NaNoWriMo this year as a plantser and an Old-School Wrimo.

My project will be a supernaturel/fantasy story about three people cursed by eternal life and I've been wanting to write this story since September, but when I realised it would be novel-length I decided to keep it for NaNoWriMo instead.

I've never heard of this before. From my research that's ~2;000 words a day, or 4 pages a day approximately. I think that's doable.

I'm going to give it a try, I have a story about a young boy who gets trapped in a world where emotion becomes a physical manifestation.

@Maglar 1.667 words a day according to their tool. I did NaNoWriMo for the first time in 2018 and I won with 62k words. Last year I didn't have a project, but this year I'm ready for it!

The goal is to write every day, but if you have an off-day and then write 3000 words the next that's still good of course. It can be though, some people drop out because 50.000 words in a month is not an easy feat. But it is doable. Especially if you have support around you.

Also, the goal is not producing a perfect story, but to complete your first draft. So while you can edit while you write, the suggestion is to move the story forward every day and keep the editing for after NaNoWriMo. You won't upload the story on their website, just add the word-count of it in their tool. And if you manage to get the 50.000 you will be a NaNoWriMo winner!

For some people it helps to join regional groups, because in those people get together for virtual write-in, sprints, and just general support from others who live in the same area as you do.

And this thread is of course for everyone on this site to cheer for each other :)

@Calle So on the first does it open a section to allow you write directly into the website or do you upload your writing? My project says, "Prepping" so far and I cannot see anywhere that seems the appropriate spot to wrote

@Maglar You don't write or post on their website, you just keep track of your wordcount. They provide the tools to help you reach the goal, but you have to use your own preferred software, or pen and paper if you wish, to write your story.

On the 1sth you can change your story from 'prepping' to 'in progress' and the option to add your wordcount should be accessible.
If you update daily you can claim badges, there is a badge for updating the wordcount for 30 days in a row.

I'm certainly participating in NaNoWriMo this year, but I've never been good at discussing my stories until they're completed. I think I'll try it though and I'll try and be available to help others as well!

You don't have to share anything you don't want to. In this thread we can just get together and encourage each other to get that goal of 50000 words and win.

My NaNoWriMo project summary is:
This Dutch story will be about three men who are cursed in Roman times with eternal life. In this story we will explore how they will deal with the ever-changing times, how they handle seeing people come back in their lives without remembering them from a previous life, seeing loved ones die again and again. All that while trying to stay hidden from scientists and governments.

The goal for the story is to start in Roman times, then highlight some events in medieval times, current times and 150 years in the future. Then I will jump to 2000 years in the future when wars and another ice age happened and people are basically back to hunter-gatherer societies like in the palaeolithic times.

@Calle

That's clever, offers a timeless perspective on world events. People change so much so fast it's easy to forget what life was like even 50 years ago and to mention 500 years ago.

So what format do you like to do your writing on? Do you open up a Google Doc or do you like Microsoft word?

I prefer Microsoft Word, I've used it since Office 97 and while I used Openoffice for a while I moved back to MS Word within the year. I've recently started using Google Docs for documents I want to be able to share, but I noticed it gets a bit laggy when the document gets too long.

My grimdark fantasy novel is going to be about a group of outcasts and how they end up as what I'm calling "The Black Band." The group is comprised of six members.

  • Rhaak Bin Hakeem: A brutal pitfighter, an ex-thief, and an ex-slave.
  • Veera Nol'dorese: A disgraced dark elf princess who will do anything to gain power and regain her throne.
  • Ghearden Blackdagger: A dark dwarf assassin who will kill anyone for enough money, out for vengeance.
  • Tyn Davencourt: The 3rd best thief in Gallowsgate, ostracized from the Chimera Cartel, a Thieves Guild.
  • Sron: A Gnoll Bounty Hunter who eats what he kills, bringing back only the heads for the bounty.
  • Brimston Verenge: A scorned necromancer with a vendetta.

I sort of wanted to make an anti-hero/morally grey story with a band of morally questionable/bad people who learn to trust one another, committing crimes and unwittingly saving the day on occasion. The first book is about them all meeting, one after the other in a bizarre series of events that throws clues into why two maritime city states are about to go to war. They find out how, and they find out this conspiracy is also why each of them have been fucked over, and they solve the problem and form a group out of petty revenge.

I tend to write on a guild PM I made a few years ago. There's probably 100,000 words on it by now. I then copy/paste it to a word doc to edit and revise. Idk, I like the guild's format.

I love the idea for that story and the characters are intriguing; It'll be interesting to see how they will interact and do their things. It's definitely a story I'd read.

The discord of our guild also has a NaNoWriMo chat now, for those who prefer discord. But this thread will definitely stay open during this month as well. Questions/updates/general NaNoWriMo talk can be done in both.

I got my first 500 words written and the story wants to come out, so thus far it's going well for me.

I've got my brief notes done!

My story follows several different narrators as they navigate through their fantasy world through a time of war and of apocalyptic events, centered around a missing Sorceress.

I'm hoping to include action, romance, and a lot of drama to my novel! If I can get a first draft done by the end of the month... Oh my goodness, I would be thrilled.

416 words in :)

EDIT: Calling it a day on 1847 words. Super pleased with myself.
