"Haha! There we go! Without that Koffing, Jeebs ability is in full play!" Skylar smirked. These guys already weren't doing a ton of damage to his stronger team members, but now that Friend Guard was up? Oh man, that was good. He did wince a little at the three Pokemon on his team being poisoned, but to be honest he was going to go to the Pokemon Center after this anyway. Not much else to do in here after he wipes the floor with these fools.

"Alright, now for his friend, Mac!"
- Double Kick on the Lillipup for the win. Mac is so good.

"JoJo, with that Light Screen you can't do a ton of damage, so play on the supportive side! Go with a Lucky Chant!"
"Rallallall~!"
- Ralts has pitiful stats already, to be honest, and a Light Screen doesn't help this at all. A Lucky Chant to keep the team from being critted is probably one of the better plays going on! Side note, Trace should activate? I dunno what ability it'd copy though, so...

"Royal, Quick Attack! Take Rufflet out!"
- Yup.

"Keep it up, Paradise! Razor Leaf everything but the Foongus and Bellsprout!"
- We're going for the triple hit here. With any luck, Razor Leaf should take out anything that isn't already taken out, leaving the rest of the foes as the Foongus and Bellsprout. That being said, we do still have two Pokemon to work with on Skylar, and the three that the new girl has. Should be fine.

"Seabreeze, finish off the Foongus! Wing Attack!"
- Yessir.

"Struggle Bug again, Jeebs! The Bellsprout and Foongus are good targets!"
- I love Jeebs. I didn't think Jeebs would be super well off in this fight, but Jeebs is really helping with the stat drops and spread damage, and now that we have Friend Guard? Oh boy!

"Think you can take out the rest?" Skylar looked over to the girl with his plan. Sandile should be able to wipe up the Bellsprout and Foongus, if they're still up, while the other two should hopefully be able to clear something else out of the way. Hopefully, with everything and a little luck, Skylar would pull out of this after this round.

"If that's correct then we need to scale a mountain. Better than the shore walls at least." He said as he looked behind him as the crashing waves crashed against the cliff side. Yeah, if they tried to go down there right now they were just dead, but still, traversing a mountain is certainly no joke. He looked at the map again to get a better understanding of where exactly the mountain range was so that they could plan accordingly.

There appeared to be a city not far from it. "Rainrock City seems to be at the base of the mountain. While I'm definitely eager to go right now, I think it would be best make preparations and stock up on supplies so we minimize as much of the danger as possible. We don't know how high up we need to go so it's better to be safe." Anise probably was more familiar with the mountain than he was, but he could only imagine how strong the Pokemon were going to be the higher the climbed. It was better to proceed with caution for any exploration. That and he needed to give his feet a rest after hiking for this long, but he kept that to himself.

Speaking up steps, Basil had almost forgotten about the egg! He had not even checked on it once ever since he left Pureplain City so now as good as any. Basil pulled out the egg to see how it was doing though he wasn't expecting much since he had just received it today.

@Gardevoiran

Mac Double Kicked the Lillipup! Lillipup fainted! Yeah, not much surprise there.

Seabreeze Wing Attacked Foongus! That was too much for the mushroom. Foongus fainted!

Royal Quick Attacked Rufflet! Rufflet wiggled in the air a bit, before diving and hitting the ground kinda close to Skylar’s right. Rufflet fainted!

Jeebs shot Struggle Bug at Espurr and Bellsprout! With Light Screen up, it didn’t do a lot, but Espurr and Bellsprout’s Special Attack fell! Espurr used Confusion on him back, but with Special Attack halved, it didn’t do a lot!

The girl sent Sandile to Bite Espurr! Espurr took SIGNIFICANT damage, and is barely holding on! This is when Paradise Razor Leaves all that isn’t Bellsprout, and that’s just Espurr! Espurr fainted!

JoJo Lucky Chants! The enemy can no longer Critical Hit them! JoJo also used Trace to copy the ability of the closest un-fainted enemy Pokémon closest to him. JoJo traced Swarm!

Bellsprout realized maybe this Sandile was way more dangerous than the weak not-water thing. Bellsprout Vine Whipped the Sandile for HEAVY Super-Effective damage, but Sandile held on!

Azurill was sent to Charm Bellsprout, punishing it for not fainting it by sharply lowering its attack! Spritzee shot a Fairy Wind at Bellsprout… which didn’t do a lot due to Light Screen and Bellsprout’s poison secondary type!

Seabreeze, JoJo and Paradise took some poison damage. They did last turn, too, even if I didn’t write about it.

With all that, only Bellsprout wasn’t fainted. The grunts were looking a mix of frustrated and panicking, glancing back at their officer, who was holding his arms crossed as he stared unsatisfied at the scene.

‘I-I think I should be able to handle one Bellsprout, yes!’ the girl said, albeit she’d actually have some trouble because all Azurill and Spritzee could produce were ineffective special-based water and fairy-type moves, and Sandile was about to faint to Vine Whip, but she’d probably handle the lone grass-type eventually.

‘Oh?’ The voice of the Team Virtue officer was heard from over there. ‘Leave the rest to her, so that you can focus on something else, then?’ His free hand, the one not holding a spear, swung off somewhere and came back holding two Pokéballs between three fingers, in addition to the Clauncher on his shoulder.

‘Do you want to win through strength in numbers, or are you going to take me on like a proper Pokémon Trainer in a proper Pokémon battle?’ he asked, his eyes scanning over Skylar’s amassed Pokémon. A little smirk emerged. ‘I don’t know which option would be worse for you. You’re going to lose badly either way.’

What does Skylar do?

__________________________

@hatakekuro

‘Er. I don’t think it’s ON the mountain, either, or people would have seen it from above, they fly there all the time,’ Anise said about the “scaling” of Mt. Strength, which sounded like outside. ‘High up on Mt. Strength there’s some form of “magnetic platform” which flying Pokémon or people riding flying Pokémon can land on. For really strong Pokémon Trainers, it’s a place they have reason to go to, apparently. Hector told me. We at the Fighting-type Gym tend to go inside Mt. Strength to train, occasionally. There’s a LOT of Fighting-types in there,’ Anise told.

‘The higher you get, the higher level the Pokémon get. But, like, maybe they wanted their shrines to be level with one another? In any case, if the shrine is in the west side of the mountain, there’s actually two entrances. There’s the main entrance of Mt. Strength from Route 4, east from Route 3 and then eventually north, and you’re at the middle of the mountain. From there, we could try to follow the tunnels west… depending on how good our senses of direction are. If it’s a place nobody has found before, how would we know?’ she said, sounding a bit worried.

‘The second entrance is in Rainrock City, actually,’ Anise said. ‘They tend to be called the Rainrock Caves, not connected to the caves just called Mt. Strength. It’s said an ancient population lived inside the Rainrock Caves, for it’s built a little like an underground village, complete with ancient writing and graffiti of things and Pokémon… but it’s a dead end, scientists have already charted the whole place, so if we’d go look there we’d have to find something they missed. There, too,’ she said.

Then, Basil pulled up an egg, and Anise had to take a moment because she, too, got curious as to what this was. Sure, she knew it was an egg, but seeing things up close was still interesting…

It appears to move occasionally. It may be close to hatching.

In any case, that covered, were they heading somewhere, then?

"Sorry it might be rough, I really thought it'd be lower." Skylar apologized to the girl before turning to the boss of this pontoon of grunts.

‘Do you want to win through strength in numbers, or are you going to take me on like a proper Pokémon Trainer in a proper Pokémon battle? I don’t know which option would be worse for you. You’re going to lose badly either way.’
Grump

"I wouldn't count on that. I trust in my team to take you on." Skylar returned all of his Pokemon to his Pokeballs for once. He didn't want the Poison hurting any particular team member while he waited to send them in for this bout.

"Bring it on, Grump!"

‘Hmpf. Good choice,’ the officer said, and then deposited one of those two Pokéballs back into his clothes. He held forth the other one at Skylar, while still holding his spear at the ready as his grunts scattered.

‘I am Anton, Elite of Team Virtue! You will know the consequences of facing us!’

Team Virtue Elite Anton would like to battle!

‘… KLINK!’ Anton calls as he sends out his first Pokémon, which materializes into a floating pair of cogs in front of him, spinning while fixing their eyes on the target ahead of them, which was currently Skylar.

Pokédex Entry #599 – Klink, the Gear Pokémon. Two minigears mesh together and are then joined for life, their magnetic charge will rebound other gears. The two gears are constantly spinning against one another, producing the needed energy for it to survive.

He then spun his spear a bit until he could hold his arms crossed while the spear stuck out to his right in the midst of the cross, Clauncher still perched on his shoulder.

‘Go ahead. Make your predictable choice,’ Anton told Skylar, clearly believing himself to have utterly outsmarted the boy already.

Skylar smirked, grabbing one of the Pokeballs from his waist and preparing it. "Bring it on, Anton!"

Bird Tamer Skylar accepted the challenge!

The comment about making a predictable choice was a little worrisome, but Skylar knew exactly who was coming out to handle this fight. Sure, again, might've been a little predictable, but he knew the stakes. "Mac, you're up first buddy!"

His Pokeball let loose a bright flash of red light, and out came the Combusken. "ComBUSKENNN!" He was fired up!

"That's fine, my team can deal with Fighting-types." Talk about great timing with catching his new Hawlucha just before going into a place crawling with Fighting-types. It wouldn't be helpful if they had to go high up since the wild Pokemon would become stronger so hopefully the shrine was hidden around the lower levels. It definitely piqued his interest that there was that strange platform high in the mountains, but at the level he was it would be suicide so he'll settle for challenging that way further down the line in his career as a trainer. For now, he needed to think on what they needed to do.

If they took the regular entrance to the mountain then they would have to traverse snaking tunnels with no certain way of knowing if they were going the right direction or they could try the entrance by Rainrock, but it's already a known dead end so as Anise said, they would have to find something that scientists had missed. "Logically speaking, no matter how complex a path is someone should have accidentally stumbled upon the shrine by sheer luck unless they needed the mirror for something. The same thing could be said about the other entrance by Rainrock; if the mirror is the key." He said thinking aloud, but continued on. "The safer first option would be to explore the entrance by the city first. If we're lucky, there will be some archaeologists that we can enlist the help of." That seemed like the more reasonable option. If there was nothing there then they would have to just go through the main entrance.

He didn't know if Anise actually caught what he said since she was looking at his egg. "Oh, um... You know Jacques of the Elite Four? His friend was selling Pokemon not native to Isson and gave me this egg from Galar. I just became a trainer so he gave me something he thought I could handle." Wait, it sounded like he was bragging. It really sounded like he was bragging. "S-sorry. I really sound full of myself." Basil smiled sheepishly. The egg was getting close to hatching, but it wasn't there yet. Back into the bag it went for another day and he stood back up. It was time for them to get going to Rainrock.

‘The mirror…’ Anise muttered as she picked up said mirror and looked at it, as Basil said that part about it being the key. ‘It’s worth a shot,’ she said, invested in this thing now. Also that thing about finding someone to help them out.

Anise listened to what Basil said about the egg, looking a bit surprised when Jacques was mentioned. ‘Huh. You have some friends,’ Anise commented, and then shook her head at the “being full of himself” line. ‘No, don’t worry about it. You were just explaining. Alright, then we go to Rainrock City. There should be plenty of archaeologists at the academy or library there,’ Anise said, and then they were off.

Skipping a fair bit of travelling through the forest again…

Eventually, they got back to Route 3. Been a little while.

Connected areas:
Rainrock City. Across the route, north.
Route 4. Head east just before Rainrock.
Silent Shrine. Head west just before Highhill, through the forest.
Highhill Town. Just south.
North Silent Forest. If you jump off the road west.
Route 14. If you went onto the water to the east.

From there, they could head a bit north. Finally, after a decently steep climb, they arrived.

So, what does Basil do now?

Basil arched his brow at Anise calling Jacques his friend. Yeah, that was definitely a bit of a stretch. "It's less that he is a friend, but more like he just appears whenever he wants." He stated as he followed her back in and out of the rainy forest once again where they found themselves on Route 3 again. If there was anything he wanted to do there, he'd simply just do it later. Right now, he had a clear goal and that was to get to Rainrock City, which really wasn't that far of a hike.

"What a peaceful city." He mused to himself as they crossed the bridge into it. It was far more quiet than the bustling energy of Worldedge. If it were not for the fact that they had a specific goal for coming to Rainrock, Basil would have found himself finding a dry spot away from the rain and begin to sketch their surroundings. "How about we try our luck with the academy? Seems like a good place to start for searching for intellectuals."

They went to Rainrock Academy. It’s an impressive, rocky building that is mostly frequented by young adults and adults, given its higher education purposes and intentions of research. However, besides that, it had an unnaturally large foyer for the purpose of Pokémon battles, for it doubled as the Rainrock City Pokémon Gym. The sign in front said as much in very clear terms.

Rainrock Pokémon Gym - Major League
Leader: Clement
“The Genius Geologist!”

… As probably evident, Basil wasn’t here to challenge the Major League Gym of Rainrock City, he was here looking for someone to possibly show him the way inside the Rainrock Caves. Let’s assume he asked someone for a bit of guidance, a student or so. Like this older Lass here.

‘Hm? Someone to ask about the Rainrock Caves? Oh, I’d recommend either Professor Paulie or Professor Clement. Paulie’s an archeologist that researches the ancient population in Rainrock Caves, while Clement’s a geologist that could tell you everything about the composition of the caves themselves. Depending on what you’re looking for, both could serve you well! If, uh. If they decide to help you, which I must say Paulie’s more likely to. Our dear Gym Leader is brilliant, but often too busy to be friendly…’

That would be. What will Basil do?

Connected areas:
Route 3. To the south, the route around the mountain, leading to Route 4 or Highhill Town. A wet woodland.
Route 11. A semi-populated road west under heavy rainfall, starting with a descent down towards Redcoast City. Abandoned buildings on the south side facing Silent Forest.

So, Skylar’s team got a bunch of experience throughout all that.

Seabreeze grew to level 19! Seabreeze learned Quick Attack!
Paradise grew to level 19!
Jonathan grew to level 18!
Mac grew to level 18!
Jeebs grew to level 17! Jeebs learned Psybeam!
Royal grew to level 17! Royal learned Nuzzle! Royal learned Pursuit!

That said, they’re all fainted right now, so.

‘… We have different definitions of the “deep end”,’ Anton eventually started calmly replying. ‘As long as they aren’t intentionally hurting people or trying to displace the government, I’ve got no reason to leave them behind. Look at these idiots,’ Anton said, gesturing to his grunts, who looked a combination of appalled and confused.

‘Hey, you,’ he told one.

‘Wh-what?’

‘Don’t mention this conversation to anyone. Regardless of how I think, as long as I fight for Team Virtue I’m an asset to the justice of this world. If you reported me and I was thrown out of the team, it’d be a blow to the forces of justice hunting Team Amethyst. Isn’t that right?’ Anton declared to them.

‘I-I… I can’t say you’re wrong…’ a very conflicted-looking Team Virtue grunt replied.

‘You see? They are harmless. Irritating, but harmless,’ Anton said, shrugging and sighing as he turned around. ‘… But Team Amethyst did do SOMETHING in this cave. They were looking for something. They may even have found it. This much we do know, even if we don’t know what it was. I’d keep my wits around here if I were you,’ he said, a tone of caution.

‘… I’ll win next time,’ he finished, before he walked off into the cavern, confused and unsure grunts following after him into the darkness…

‘A-are they gone?’

Turns out the girl didn’t flee the cave. She was hiding around the corner.

‘I-I know you told me to run, but, uh, grandpa said there’s no running from a trainer fight… and you were in a trainer fight… so…’ she peeked out unsure, her surviving Spritzee floating out to glow a bit pink on the scene. ‘… You saved me. Thank you. I was ready to try to save you after, I, uh, I have one more Pokémon that I only show if it’s absolutely necessary…’

In any case. Looks like Team Virtue had their own little mining operation going on here. It didn’t seem like they cared about the vast majority of what they dug out, despite there potentially being a bunch of valuable materials in what they’d been digging out. But, there was something lying on the floor of that tiny collapsed hole that the girl had come out of…?

"It was just a thought, and I wouldn't be so sure of a victory next time." Skylar smirked. "This is just the beginning." And off Anton and his goons went, into the darkness of the cave... and once they were gone, Skylar sighed to himself. "Phew, barely made it out of that one."

Then the girl came out of hiding, and Skylar looked genuinely surprised that she didn't run after the grunt battle. Moreso, she thanked Skylar for saving her, which just struck him as a little odd. "Eh, no worries. I tend to gravitate towards helping people when they need it." He glanced down at the Crystals of Emotion on his wrist before looking back up. "I do appreciate you sticking around. That was dicey near the end, and if I failed you might've had to try and clear out the rest of that fight."

Skylar turned back to the battlefield, just thinking about how close that fight was, when he noticed a little shine of a gray blob in his vision. Odd, what was that about...?

"All that aside, though, I don't think we got properly introduced." Skylar mentioned as he stepped over to the shiny object on the ground, picking it up. "I'm Skylar, future Flying Type Champion of IssooooOOAHAHA!" Skylar completely broke character as he realized what he picked up. "They didn't even take this Old Amber! Gosh, with how rare Aerodactyl is you'd think Anton might want a team member like it! Ah well, looks like I've got another buddy for my team!" He quickly pocketed the Old Amber and turned back around.

"Sorry. Skylar. I'd introduce my whole team, but they're... not in the best state. Means I'll have to use my cane again..." As Skylar waited for the girl's response, he reached onto the side of his bag and pulled off his cane.

What a grand building. He felt completely out of place in being in such a place of higher education, but he one day he knew he would have to go there if he wished to defeat the major league as well. Definitely a great place to start looking for help, but where do they begin? Thankfully, there were plenty of students and staff walking around and found himself asking an older lass on who would be the best to help them.

So it was either get someone who knows his way around an ancient civilization or someone that could lead them through the caves? One could possibly help make connections with any possible myths related to the shrine and the other could tell them everything about the composition of the caves. Basil hemmed and hawed with what they should do, but it seemed like there really was only one sensible option. "Sounds like Professor Paulie may be our best bet then. It is more of a archaeological matter than a geological one. Do you have time to show us to where he would be right now?"

If Anton had actually noticed the Old Amber, he’d have been interested. It was, however, a grunt that unearthed that particular pocket, who didn’t know what it was, and the fact this girl had stumbled out at the same time as that part of the wall crumbled was rather distracting.

The girl looked at Skylar’s reaction finding the Old Amber with curiosity, though then quickly returned to speaking. ‘I’m Florrie, assistant of Professor Dunstan at the Raremine Research Lab…’ … and her eyes widened as Skylar took out his cane. ‘Oh, god. You’re actually… I did wonder, but those glasses are actually because you…’ she swallowed a bit, and then was quick to walk to Skylar’s side.

‘Let me help you back to town. It’s the least I can do. There’s… there’s nothing to find down here, anyway,’ she said, with a slight bit of regret in her tone, in a way that definitely sounded like she knew this for a fact.

In any case, she could take Skylar back to Raremine Town, if he wished! Would assume so, since he has no Pokémon currently. She’d lead him to the door of the Pokémon Center. After which…

‘I should go back to the lab. You… seem dependable. You saved me, so. If you’d like to… uh, if you’d like to help us with a thing, the reason I was in that cave and what they were likely looking for, you could come to Dunstan’s office at some point.’ Triggered by just going there at any time. ‘You don’t have to, of course, if so, good luck on your journey!’ Florrie said, before running off. Note, this is just the opening for that particular side quest that Dawkin’s already on, but Eklispe hasn’t posted in a while, so, eh. Not sure. Oh, well. Thought I’d leave it open for all players anyway.

So, what will Skylar do now?

He can prevent Florrie from leaving if he feels like, or head on. It’s probably late right now.

@hatakekuro

The Lass showed them the way through the campus towards the offices of the professors, up to a door clearly labeled with Paulie’s name, and then departed for her own business. Inside the door, after knocking a bit the voice of an older gentleman called out ‘Come in!’ they were free to enter.

Paulie is, without question nor doubt, a Ruin Maniac, and there’s no reason to give him any other appearance or trainer class.

He was currently on his knees with a fully packed bag checking on the lowest level of his shelf with a magnifying glass.

‘I swear, I put it somewhere here…’ he muttered for himself before shrugging and standing up, stretching his back a little. ‘Eh, it can wait. Hello!’ He said, turning towards Basil with a friendly smile. ‘What can I help you with?’

Yup, this was the man they were looking for. "We're sorry to disturb you. I'm Basil Rivens, employee of Professor Kalmia, and this is Anise, disciple of the Redcoast gym leader." He motioned towards the red head. We came here for your help. You see, we were tasked by the gym leader of Highhill to uncover the mystery of the never ending rain and have reason to believe that." Well, hopefully this man was far more open to the idea that this constant meteorological anomaly was completely unnatural.

"You are more than likely aware of the three shrines: the Silent, the Abandoned, and the Deepforest Shrine, which is the latter is known as the Shrine of the Center. However, we have reason to believe that there is a fourth shrine hidden within Mt. Strength. Anise, can you hand me the map?" Basil asked. It was a crude map, but it helped them get their point across. He placed the map on Paulie's desk and traced his finger along the three shrines. "As you can see, the three currently known shrines form an obtuse triangle, but if you extend the triangle to the point that its three sides are equilateral, the next point is shown to be on Mt. Strength and the Shrine of the Center is in the center of the new triangle." Basil picked up the map and folded it up before handing it back to Anise. Somehow, she was relegated to the role of assistant.

"But if it were that clear cut then we wouldn't be asking for your help. While we can guess that the shrine is the western part of the mountain, we do not know which entrance to proceed with. Mt. Strength has various twists and turns, and then there is the cave with the remains of the ancient civilization, which leads us to here now. Anise, can you place the mirror on the desk?" He asked kindly, trying to pull out all the stops to convince the professor of their discovery. "This relic is what the Abandoned Shrine is dedicated to and is the key to the mystery, but we lack knowledge and expertise. We would like to ask for your help to lead us through Rainrock cave and teach us what you know about the ruins. "

"That'd be... pretty helpful, not gonna lie. Normally I have Seabreeze perched on my head, but... well... that Dragon Pulse knocked him clean out." Skylar pat the floor with his cane as he started walking back to town, Florrie at his side. "Truth be told, I'm not completely blind, but if you asked me to read anything that wasn't two inches in front of my face, glasses or not I wouldn't be able to." Skylar chuckled. "My vision is that blurry."

The walk back to town was... uneventful. Skylar knew roughly where to head, judging from the lights in the distance, but he did appreciate Florrie helping him back to town.

As she brought up how she and Dunstan could use some help with something, Skylar nodded and offered a smile. "I was already planning on it. I happen to be a photographer of sorts, and the pictures I've taken on this journey might be of some interest to Dunstan. That, plus now I need to go resurrect another fossil." That Old Amber might turn into quite a pretty reliable team member. "I'm gonna heal up my team then I'll be right there." He offered a small wave before stepping into the Pokemon Center and healing his team back up from... basically nothing.

Once everyone was healed, Skylar quickly let everyone out when he exited the Pokecenter.

"Wingull? Seabreeze wasted no time perching back onto Skylar's head.
"..." Paradise was calm and quiet. Not especially unusual.
"Ral?" Mac climbed onto Paradise's back and waited for Skylar to speak.
"Combusken! Comb! Usken!" Mac was practically dancing in satisfaction from that last battle.
"Vivillon...? Vivillon!" Jeebs practically joined in moments after assessment.
"Emu!" Royal offered a cocky smirk, like it was nothing.

"Alright, quick debriefing. I know you guys probably still need a bit to rest up from that, so I won't keep you waiting." Skylar started to his group, sitting on the dusty ground and calling his little pow-wow. "While yeah, that wasn't the cleanest victory, we still pulled through with our heads held high! Every single one of you should be proud of yourselves!" He praised the lot of his group, everyone's spirits raising a little more. "All we can go from here is up, and with team members like you kids, I'm confident we can keep moving." Skylar patted everyone on the head, and one by one the group... purred. Weird to think about a bird purring, but Seabreeze certainly did.

"Mac, Seabreeze, do you mind staying out of your Pokeballs? I promise, no more training until morning if I can help it."

"Combusken!" "Gull!"

"That's what I like to hear. Alright guys, get a good rest. I'll let you guys out before I go to bed tonight." he called back his other four Pokemon before standing back up, Mac running to Skylar's side and bouncing on his claws. "Back to the lab again. Let's see about another potential friend..."

And thusly, the crew went back to the lab.

Skylar's immediate first reaction was to head back to the guy who handled his fossil before. With any hope, he could maybe resurrect two at a time for the trainer...? "Hey, so I know I might be acting like a burden, but is there any way you could take another fossil for me and resurrect it as well?" Skylar held up his Old Amber. "It'd be totally fine if you couldn't, we can just do a trade-off tomorrow morning when I come back for the Plume Fossil."

Regardless of anything that happened, Skylar and co. would be facing Dunstan's office in a few minutes at most.

"Hello? Professor Dunstan?" the trainer knocked a few times. "Uh, mind if I come in? I have a few pictures to show you!"

Amelia listened to the three trainers as they all gave their testimonies and then presented their pokemon and possessions. By the testimonies and the previous conversation between them alone, it seemed unlikely that either one of the three trainers had taken the Water Stone. Regardless, when presented with the items, she carefully sorted through them, taking particularly long with the pile of pretty stones incase the Stone in question had somehow been mixed up in it.

When she finished with that task, she moved onto the pokemon. Most of them seemed to be damaged from obvious battle, with the Surskit and Ledyba looking especially rough. She felt bad for the two bug-types and hoped that they would be treated soon. The Murkrow was rather suspicious and she remembered Joshua telling her to be careful with anything shiny when around them. They liked to nab such things and hoard them according to him, especially with a Honchkrow was nearby and giving orders. This one belonged to a trainer though, so there likely wasn't a Honchrow involved. Still, out of all of them, it seemed to be the most likely to try and steal the Water Stone.

Straightening herself up again, Amelia took a few seconds to gather her thoughts before a question occurred to her. So, she turned to face Eric before speaking.
"You said there was an earthquake at some point that that caused Palpitoad to leave the stone right? When that happened, did any of you have your pokemon out? Did you take your eyes off them at any point that they might've gone off and done something without you noticing?" She asked the group.

Cyril Desrosiers

"Aye aye Missy! Buneary, return," Cyril gave a wry grin as he retrieved her Pokéball and gave it a click before chucking it in the air. Red energy enveloped the Buneary as static coursed around her body as she warped back into the ball. As Velvet was returning into the soaring Pokéball, Cyril did a pirouette as Aster stood up on his partner's shoulder, looking to balance himself.

"And now, looks like it's your time to shine," he exclaimed as he held one of his arms out as Aster began dashing down it, albeit somewhat wobbly as a result of not being too used to the brisk whirl of his partner. The moment he reached the end of his hand was when Cyril finished spinning as Aster crouched on the back of his hand. With a combination of the Budew's small jump and the momentum of his hand, he sent Aster flying through the air with... some success.

"FWEEEEEEEEEEE!" Aster could only cry out in surprise, anticipation, fear, but most of all, he sounded plenty excited. While him flipping through the air wasn't exactly his idea, the Budew just did his best to play it off as well as he could since it would look extremely cool for the dashing Phantom Thief!

Just ignore the fact that his tiny legs were wriggling frantically in a panic as he soared through the air. Of course, while he was about to stick the landing in a couple of seconds, there was also the Pokéball Velvet was stored in began tumbling downwards, back to the loamy earth. Cyril was on top of things as he stuck an arm up, hand wide open to catch the ball.

Of course, due to being totally stylish, it descended straight into the palm of his hand. Hah, just as expected~. Clicking the ball open, he held it towards his shoulder as a red glow began to envelop one of his shoulders as a somewhat roughed up Velvet found herself sitting there, wincing a little as static coursed around her. She couldn't help but give Cyril a slight glare before her visage soften the moment he gently patted and scritched her head.

"Good work out there; you gave us quite the glamorous performance," he softly smiled at her before she gave a light tap to his face with one of her ears. It was somewhat slow, albeit jittery but it did give him a little static shock, causing him to flinch a little. "Ayckphth," he reacted a little in surprise, which elicited a small giggle from Velvet and a fake, annoyed pout from Cyril...

... whose facade faded away almost instantly before coming back to the battlefield.

While he was doing that, it appeared Aster had stuck the landing! Well, more or less. Looked a bit roughed up and teetering a little, attempting to re-balance himself, but for the most part, he did it. The moment he was properly on his own two feet again, he puffed his little chest, giving a victorious little "Budeeeeee," with Mimi giggling and giving Aster a little encouraging cheer, "Hap, hapi!"

The little Bud spun his body and shone a smile at her before turning to face their opponents. Alright, now what did Cyril want him to do?

Clicking his tongue, he gave a cheerful little smirk as he snapped his fingers as Cation pawed at his legs, attempting to get Velvet's attention, "Excellent work Missy," he praised the girl before shifting his eyes back to the field.

"While he's going to keep rolling until that move ends, it perfectly sets us up for our next lesson," if he could recall, the fact that it was paralyzed would slow it down its move. Holding his arm out, Cyril rolled his fingers before snapping his fingers.

"Budew, run directly at the Grimer, Missy have Growlithe follow behind Budew," he bellowed out with a large smile on his face, "trust me on this, we should be able to kill two Pidgeys with one Rock Tomb."

Dang, smooth saying there Cyril, gotta write that down somewhere later as he waited for Chloe to issue the command to her own partner. Aster on the other hand decided to not look too bewildered and trusted his partner as he dashed directly towards the Grimer. "Budeee, fweeee," he cried triumphantly out as he felt his little heart beat into his head.

Assuming Growlithe follows directly behind Aster, Cyril was banking on leading the Spheal directly behind the duo instead of splitting them off. To him, the plan was to not only root their little spherical Spheal in place with the gooey glop of the Grimer, but to hurt the Grimer as well. Hopefully these two grunts didn't pick up on the plan too quickly, but hey, there were contingencies in case this failed.

But for now, he had to relay the next part of the plan as he leaned in close to Chloe and whispered, "Alright, on my mark, have Growlithe jump to the left." Looks like it was closing in soon. Whether or not the Grimer attacked Aster and managed to damage him, that just meant it was staying in place, but ideally it would end up attacking the Spheal as it barreled toward the group.

Should this strategy begin to bear fruit Cyril would then command, "Now Budew, jump to the right!" Aster would follow up with diving to the side and doing a little roll before tumbling back onto his little feet with hopefully Growlithe doing the same as the Spheal would potentially ram straight into the much slower Grimer.

Once that occurred, Cyril would place a hand on his hip while the other two's Pokémon were caught in a bit of a daze before issuing an attack, "Now, time for an all out attack on this Spheal, Aster, Absorb!"

‘Ah, Kalmia’s new assistant? It’s a pleasure to meet you! Has she decided what she wants to research, yet?’ Paulie asked with a lighthearted smirk. Then it was Anise’s turn to be introduced, and she nodded to him. ‘Ah, Hector’s disciple. I’ve heard the training is really hard! Can you keep up, lass?’

‘… Not always, Hector doesn’t really hold back, but one day,’ Anise told.

‘Haha. Hang in there!’ Paulie said, then turned to Basil… who said something quite interesting. Paulie frowned in interest, a little spark lighting in his older eyes. Anise unrolled the map at the cue, and Basil continued his explanation of the trip they’d taken so far. He started scratching his chin a little in interest as Anise placed the mirror on the table on the second cue, and he immediately leaned forward pulling forward his magnifying glass to inspect the mirror closely. Eventually Basil finished, and Paulie sat back in his office chair.

‘Hm. Hm. Hm, hm, hm,’ Paulie made several noises, poking his face as he thought it over. ‘Well! It’s worth a try, isn’t it!’ he called, spreading his arms out wide, grinning widely. ‘Come with me. There’s something I’d like to show you two. If it’s that or not, eh, we’ll see!’ he said, standing up, grabbing his backpack and being on his merry way. ‘You needed it right NOW, right? New discoveries waits for nobody!’

If Basil would prefer to stay in Rainrock City.

Route 11. A semi-populated road west under heavy rainfall, starting with a descent down towards Redcoast City. Abandoned buildings on the south side facing Silent Forest.

Otherwise, Paulie led them straight past the academy, through town, and in a very specific direction. The caves behind town. Straight for the opening, no hesitation.

‘Oh! A-alright, then! I’ll see you, there!’ Florrie said, hurrying away for now.

He eventually headed back to the resurrection researcher…

'What? Nope!’ Resurrection dude shook his head. 'One at a time per person! We don’t have an infinite amount of these machines! They’re not popcorn machines, popping out Pokémon in the hundreds from the fossils at once! You’ll have to wait until tomorrow!’ he said, crossing his arms, looking defiant. Trade-off tomorrow it is.

Skylar then headed off to Dunstan’s office instead. He knocked a couple of times, and said his line…

‘Ah, that… that’s him!’ he faintly heard Florrie’s voice on the other side. There was the noise of a chair in need of some oil being leaned back, and then a significantly calmer voice.

‘Alright, come in.’ With that, Skylar could open the door.

A dimly lit lab presented itself, one where a bunch of machines glowing with light green were orderly placed in squares with plenty of room in-between, many documents of research on varying tables as well. There were tubes of who knows what liquids, primarily green ones, that shone a bit and gave the whole place a green shine were placed to the side, along with flasks and vials of similarly green nature that made one ask what chemist was using only the same green fluid for all their experiments. Also inside this very same room, was a man sitting by his computer…

‘I heard you had something to show me?’ Dunstan asked, looking up at Skylar from where he was seated, letting Skylar speak. Florrie was standing next to Dunstan, looking exactly like a couple minutes ago.

What does Skylar do now?

As simple as that would have made the case, there was no Water Stone among Leila’s collection of rocks. There was a Fire and a Leaf stone, however.

>> Evidence updated: Fire and Leaf Stone.

‘Oh. Yeah, they were both out!’ Eric responded pretty quickly, smirking. ‘We’ve been making trips to and from the Pureplain Pokémon Center here to train! Then camping on top of it, because, yeah, why not? So, yes! They were both out at the time of the earthquake,’ he told. Then about taking his eyes off them. ‘Well, uh. I wasn’t training both of them at the same time. I was training them one by one, so I suppose one could have snook off while I was training the other… but you guys didn’t snitch the stone, did you?’ he asked, turning to his two Pokémon. Both the Ledyba and the Surskit shook their heads to the best of their ability.

‘Yeah! Then I trust them!’

Was anything in that important enough to add to the testimony?

Also, may as well add the Earthquake Testimony to evidence.

>> Earthquake Testimony added to evidence.

Or she could leave.

‘Um, don’t you mean faint two poor Pidgeys with one Rock Tomb?’ Chloe asked, sounding like she didn’t like the idea of Pidgeys being Rock Tomb, and especially not to death. ‘Anyway, yes! I’m in! Growlithe, after!’ she turned back seriously towards the battle, and Growlithe turned to dash after Aster!

To they lined up in order to make Spheal crash into Grimer…

‘I see what you’re doing! I’m not going to have Spheal hit my ally again! Spheal, STOP!’ the white-haired shouted. Spheal started spinning violently in the other direction, kicking up dirt and creating a little crater as the round seel slowly came to a stop in front of Aster and Growlithe…

‘HAH! I did not hurt my own ally! Your plan has failed! What are you going to do now, huh!?’ white-haired sounded out, stupidly proud, crossing his arms. Chloe stared at him a bit, then…

‘I suppose we can beat you?’ she suggested.

‘Wha-’

‘Growlithe, Bite!’ Chloe commanded, unless Cyril had a better idea, and Growlithe jumped forward to bite at the suddenly immobile Spheal.

‘W-Water Gun!’ white-haired dude commanded, Spheal intending to shoot a Water Gun at Growlithe if it survived for it.

‘Poison Gas!’ the red-haired one commanded, and Grimer spewed out a Poison Gas towards Aster and Growlithe, and Spheal because it’s right next to Growlithe. Probably didn’t know Aster’s part poison-type.

Their strategies after this will probably exclusively be to have Spheal Water Gun or Powder Snow depending on effectiveness, and Grimer to Pound or Mud-Slap, because Grimer early moveset is not very good.

It only had just occurred to him that Kalmia never specifically told him what she studied. All that he knew that she was sending trainers out with Pokedexes to fill it out and get paid for it. "Uh, I don't really know." Was what he had said to the professor before he went on with his explanation. Was he being a bit too forceful in asking for his help? Was he overplaying his hand?

No, it turned out that Paulie was absolutely game to help them out, enthusiastically so. "O-okay!" And now he was being caught in the professor's pace. Preparations be damned.

Basil followed the professor through the rainy town straight to the cave. It was far more mapped out and well lit than he actually thought it would be, but not a lot to take in since he had no interest in archaeology.

"Huh, what now?" Basil looked down where he was about to step and noticed that the rock he was about to step on had eyes.

"Dude!" It shouted, startling the trainer who bowed in apology. "Dude, dude, dude." It muttered to itself as it shifted itself back in place in the dirt. There were other strange Pokemon, like those Roggernola following them or the Nosepass that were as still as a stone, no pun intended.

Paulie gave them a run down on what he could tell them about the civilization that once lived here, but that wouldn't help them a single bit. The fact that these two kids came in with a claim that there is a shrine that professional archaeologists somehow missed over many excavations would be completely utter nonsense and he had every right to turn them away if not for the fact that they had their own mystery on their hands.

"What could it be?" Basil asked. Well, the answer was soon revealed in the form of a massive mural that told a tale of some sort involving three creatures fighting off darkness.

What could the mural have anything to do with the legend of the Strong One? Anise told him that it was a beast of rain that rampaged until it was calmed somehow and that the beasts would revert to their original form when the Strong One was reflected, but from what he could see, the mural showed two creatures fighting an encroaching darkness while a larger third creature watched from above. She did also tell him that the story was altered after being orally told through many generations so its possible that this painting could fill in the missing pieces. Stranger was that this wall was impossibly impregnable, which could explain how this painting was able to be in perfect condition for centuries.

Basil remained silent when asked, his head tilted with his eyes closed as he kept trying to make sense of it all. A wall harder than any known material, the mirror, the Strong One, and a beast looking down upon two other creatures. He thought to himself, tapping his foot, slightly frustrated. His eyes shot wide open when the realization hit him like a baseball bat to the back of the head and turned to Alise. "We were both wrong. All this time we were thinking that the Strong One could only be a person, but what if it wasn't?"

"Anise, can you reflect mural in the mirror? If what I am thinking if correct, we may have found it." Basil took a very cautious step back away from the mural. Whatever would happen was completely up in the air.

As they stood there, Anise also inspected the mural, staying quiet as she inspected the three beasts and the mural, and with Basil making his observation, she looked to him.

Basil made his request, and Anise nodded to what it could mean. She took hold of the mirror, and lifted it, reflecting the mural as she did… and immediately, two things glowed. The eyes of the beast. Then, suddenly, it was like the reflection from the mirror punched a hole in the wall, as suddenly the rock vanished in a circular hole, showing a cave on the other side. The mural started to gradually vanish, starting immediately in front of the mirror, and then out towards the sides, until the wall had completely disappeared.

Before them, was a small cavern, shut away from the rest of the world. It had been completely dark in there, and yet…
