Fuck it, take two humans.

What are you? APPEARANCE ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ "We're going into the woods, not a ballroom." Magdalene stands at five feet seven inches, though often looks shorter due to the slight slouch she always stands at, giving an impression of timidity and paranoia. Her long dirty black hair is braided on either side, and is also grown out over the front, partially covering her exhausted, sleepless green eyes. She dresses in a mismatch of dark-colored brown clothing, most of it "borrowed" and in poor condition, covered in patches and poor stitches. She covers her head even further with a crude burlap hood, while wearing a looted leather tunic and pants. On her arms she wears thick cloves, and covers her legs with knee-high boots suited for travering rough and wet terrain. Around her neck rests an old emblem of her gang, two beads and a bird feather. All over her she wears crude paper talismans, though they provide no magical protection, instead being worn as good luck charms. CAPABILITIES ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ "I'll just have to make do, I guess..." Ever since her home was razed to the ground, Magdalene's lived as a woodsman, hunter, and bandit. While not much of a personal fighter, she's skilled at fighting with a crossbow, silently firing sharpened bolts from a distant hiding spot. Obviously she prefers to fight over a long range, running off from the fray, climbing trees, and crawling low to the ground, getting a surprise attack on an unaware target if possible. Worst case scenario, she can defend herself with her forest knife. Outside of the matters of violence, Magdalene is a proficient hunter and ranger, being skilled at tracking, hunting, foraging, and camping, practically any skill needed to survive off the land, even in a place as hostile and violent as deadwood. EQUIPMENT ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ "This is as heavy as I'll travel." Magdalene's weapon of choice is the crossbow she wields. Despite being a bit bulky, it's a reliable weapon and tool, capable of killing a bear with a well-placed shot. She's carrying twenty bolts for it, ones she better hope last. She also wields a large knife, though it has more use as a tool than a weapon, being used for skinning prey, cutting wood, and slitting purses. She also carries a pack of various survival essentials, including a canteen, two rolls of bandages, a flint for starting fires, and a bundle of rope. Covering her outfit are numerous talismans and scribed wards, functioning more as good luck charms than protection against spiritual entities. Finally, and perhaps most strikingly, she has a bird companion, Poe, that she's trained as a scout of sorts, tracking down prey and providing warning to any threats in the area. |

"I'm sick of all this. I can keep doing this until my hair's gray and it'll all be the same to me."
All Magdalene wants is to finally know peace; Tired of living out in the woods, surviving off of predators, and losing everything. Her main hope in joining an expedition to a place as dangerous as the Desolation is to be granted passage into Exusia, where she can toss aside her crossbow and live the rest of her life as a queen.

"Don't bother watching my back. If anything, keep an eye on your own."
Magdalene's a fearful and rugged young woman, the peace of a simple life being ripped away from her at a young age. Having lost everything twice, the only person she sticks to is herself, not being afraid to sell out or betray others if it means saving her own skin. She tends to avoid direct conflict, only fighting physically when she has a clear advantage, either range or surprise, only to quickly buckle and flee or surrender if confronted. Socially, she's extremely unpleasant, always the pessimist and being awful with words and etiquette.
Living most of her life as a woodsman and bandit, Magdalene's extremely simple and amoral, having killed over a night's meal before, and the only assistance she'd lend to a dying man on the side of the road would be making his pockets lighter. She has little care for luxuries or comfort, being perfectly willing to spend the night in a tree and laying under leaves and debris for hours in waiting.

Why are you?

"I'd start by saying I was born in Foliage, but you've probably never even heard of it."
Magdalene was born in Foliage, a small isolated settlement towards the southeastern region of Deadwood; While the beginning of her life was relatively peaceful, she was only ten when the Kaimerian Uprising broke out, and her home was one of hundreds destroyed by the Kaimerian invaders. While she was spared by the honorable wrath of the Kaimerians, her parents died in the initial attack, leaving her an estranged refugee along with the other few survivors of her village. As if their village being torched and their people being slaughtered wasn't awful enough, the survivors were forced to flee past Darington, where dozens more of the few refugees were captured by opportunistic kidnappers and dragged into the city to lives of unforgiving slavery.
The very few remaining survivors of her village took up the lives of woodsmen and nomadic hunters, living off of what little the savage wilderness of Deadwood had to offer. When ends needed to be met, they took the role of raiders and even slavers, attacking refugees just as vulnerable as themselves and trading with Darington, the same city that exploited them as they fled for their lives. Magdalene herself saw her uncle turn from a kindly neighbor to a cold and jaded outlaw, once even stabbing a traveler through the ribs when they were a few coins short of his demand. She herself was no stranger to what her people had become, learning to notch crossbows, skin prey, and loot bodies. Her people soon became feared among settlements and travelers in the region, becoming known as the Band of Wolves.
During the war between Orthos and the Kaimerians, the Band of Wolves were opportunistic scavengers, swooping in to raid battlefields, pulling the shirts off the backs of barely living men and leaving them to die in the bloodied soil. They struck a few soft blows of revenge against the Kaimerians, too, killing a few scouts, as payback for their home's destruction. Over the course of the war, however, the Band of Wolves was eventually destroyed, finally disbanding after being lured into a trap and massacred by the Knights of Orthos after one too many battlefield raids on their ravaged units. Though Magdalene and a few others managed to flee with their lives, the remnant was too small to reform, the survivors each going their separate ways after that.
Magdalene traveled northward, roaming around all on her own. She managed to find work on occasion as a fur-trader and huntress, but mostly lived as a lone traveler and petty robber. Eventually, during a trip into Orthos, she heard the news that Exusia was seeking warriors and explorers, for an expedition into the Desolation, and were willing to pay mountains of gold. Tired of constantly surviving and living out in the wilderness, Magdalene was in enough desperation to accept, and set off on her journey to Exusia.
