Name : Lottie "Firefly" Appearance/Description : Gender : Female // Race : Human // Age: 17
Personality : Lottie is a street child through and through. She'll always try to keep her guard up around others, lest she be stabbed in the back as a fact of her life growing up. It is a caution that has rewarded her well, and she sees no reason to change. Although she has never been given a serious reason to change, only painful lessons when she became a bit too trusting. Naturally the lack of any intimacy or trust has weighed on her considerable and while she'll never admit it, she yearns for a life where she doesn't have to keep one eye open in her sleep. She is ever the dreamer and hopeful that the day will come. Her ambitions are a manor being waited on hand and foot by others and the ones she can trust! Of course, she blames constant spells of bad luck...
Background : Her story is different every time someone asks her as she doesn't like telling it. She believes her past isn't interesting compared to what she wants to be. However, her stories all roughly align with the true story as she believes it. Her parents were deadbeats as she would call them, but they were probably never in a position to care for a child. She was given away sometime after being nursed by her true mother to a shady goods' dealer, Pops. She and the other orphan children under Pops never really knew him and he probably did not care much for them anyway.
All the children were put to work in the backroom of one of his shops to make handicrafts and to those that could, make cheap magical applications. Lottie remembers making almost everything she'd see at the stalls: toys, fake relics, dysfunctional machines, and everything else in between. Perhaps Pops might be praised for his genius, but it was cruel with how he pitted the children against each other rewarding the ones that managed the best craft sales from the month. Of course since the counts were based on the money raised, Pops was easily bribed by money from his own children. They always did get the best room or a full supper every night. Lottie never got the chance to win.
Pops was very short-sighted, however. He only cared about profits and when disease would finally take him early, his stores crumbled from neglect. He never trusted anyone let alone someone to marry or foster an heir in. With his death, a group of nineteen orphans found themselves suddenly with nothing. Instinct took over and the older children turned to the habits that rewarded them, stealing and scamming. The other children as part of the family were invited, of course, but some of that had to be the value of cheap manpower.
The Poppers might have started as a small inconvenience at first but soon grew into a real thorn eventually. From top-to-bottom every child had to earn their keep in the group. They were a family and while initially they were quite forgiving for each other, the harsh lessons of dwelling in the streets made them toughen up. They had to scrap for survival and skills learned by Lottie in this time were very roguish. She had never really been that good at anything, blaming her poor luck on everything. She was never one to give up, mind you, and it was her persistence and perhaps her "unluckiness" that had gifted her an opportunity that her siblings did not have.
By chance, she attempted to rob a magical scholar but was caught in the act by the man. Quite a generous person, he learned of Lottie's lot in life and offered to teach her magic. She was never quite good at being studious but was never into quitting believing magic would surely give her an edge in life, maybe wipe away the bad luck. However, because of her lack of ability to study, the scholar instead took a lesson out of the page of a magical system he had studied. The Nimble Runes system was something he had realized appealed to many uneducated people because they didn't have to learn anything other than hand signs. It was simple, and he could test this magical system out with an eager volunteer.
Lottie was given her choice on aspects to focus on. Manipulating luck was out of the question but she always thought that the shadows when stealing were always privy to luck. Having the guard pass you by without noticing you in the shadows or if you're unlucky, casting the light right into your direction... She believed it was related and chose those aspects. She received her first eight markings and was trained simply to start with.
Of course now she believes she has all the luck in the world and nothing could stop her.
Magic : Deft fingers make for deft magic, at least that is the belief some have. Nimble Runes is a bit of an underground magic craft where masters carve partial magical runes into each segment of their fingers. Then by manipulating the position of their fingers during a cast, they can activate those runes to cast spells. Each finger, aside from thumbs, can hold two partial runes and the thumbs can pick up an additional one each meaning that twenty partial runes are what a practitioner of this magical vein system is limited to. As a result there is a general focus on one or two aspects of magical manipulation for any user in Nimble Runes. However, the variety of ways you can position your fingers can create a considerable arsenal of spells within those aspects of control.
Lottie has focused on the aspects of light and dark. As a trainee, she only has a total of 8 runes carved on each of her fingers with nothing on her thumbs. It is important to start slow with this craft to make sure you don't overwhelm yourself with the number of finger positions and spells at the start.
Right now, Lottie has memorized the following:
Torchlight (Full extension of right ring and pinkie fingers), creates beam of light from her fingers
Snapflash (Full extension of right primary, ring, and pinkie fingers) creates sudden bright flash of light
Deluminate (Full extension of left primary and middle fingers) weakens any light source within an eight meter radius
Shadowmeld (Full extension of left middle, ring, and pinkie fingers) allows Lottie to meld into a strong shadow
Cat's Eye (Full extension of right pinkie and left pinkie fingers) enhances Lottie's vision to see through the dark
Equipment : Lottie does not have much. The clothes on her back, ragged as they are, have always been able to keep her warm on chilly nights. A collection of knives and shivs strapped to her person have always been useful. A lockpick, though she has never really been good at using one.
CODE: "You eva' go 'ungry at night? Ain't fun innit?"
I guess Firefly here can come from any major city, but I was thinking of a city in Amber Grove? I didn't see any city names, though.
I also hope you are okay with the bit of liberty taken on making my own bit from the magic system.
The Amber Grove's are specifically a collection of cities/tribes that function under a council. The Kogan's have the Kogani city and the people of Gabaras have the city of Gabaras. So you're completely fine in that aspect!
I should also provide this image for anyone that isn't in the discord!
Toyomo is now Kogani, and Au'sara is now The Amber Groves. Anything outside of Somnius is considered the old world!
As for your actual sheet, it looks amazing! And worry not, the way you've described your magic is a perfect fit! Surprisingly everyone currently is in some manner leaning towards hand-focused mana-veins.
Description : A relatively young adult Half-Elf; Thalion maintains a lithe, if athletic physique. He has mana veins spreading from his chest to his arms, and from the crown of his head to the right side of his face. Due to circumstances, he makes a point to keep these, and his ears hidden as much as possible.
Gender : Male// Race :Half-Elf // Age: 20 Personality : Once upon a time, there was a Half-Elf, full of mirth and wanderlust. Of cheer and courage. He was full of hope and optimism. Then he was betrayed. And from that betrayal, the young man became conflicted. He does what he must to survive; to steal what he'd rather buy, to lie when he'd rather be honest, to hide when he'd rather welcome. But, the betrayal could not kill a hero's heart. One that bleeds for those who suffer, and burn with a sun's passion. One that seeks justice in a seemingly unjust world.
Background : Born to two Half-Elves, Thalion grew up among the Elves in the forests skirting Amber's Grove. For as long as he could remember, history and lore fascinated him. In particular, his favorite were the Nael’kerym, or Duskblades; warriors who blended spell and blade into a spectacle of fury. The training Thalion did recieve his village, though adequate, proved lacking. So, against his parent's wishes, he took the family sword and ventured to Amber's Grove.
There, he found a school that taught magic and combat, headed by an Elf who was said to know the old ways. Thalion proved an ambitious and disciplined student. And so, the master brought Thalion along for a special task. The Master told Thalion that the noble was corrupt, and by slaying him, he would help ensure peace in the world. But, it became obvious to Thalion this noble committed no crimes. Despite his attempts to interfere, the noble and his children were slain, and as punishment Thalion was left to take the blame.
In jail, said master came to visit Thalion. He explained many things, how he foresaw what lies ahead, if technology is allowed to spread as it has. How Gabaras was just a precursor of what's to come. How he had friends who understood things as he did. How murdering that noble would ensure their plans succeed. Those friends sat in high places, and they could make Thalion's "crime" go away. The master left Thalion a choice: "You'll be one of my friends. Or you'll be dead. You have until dusk to decide."
When the time came to make his decision, Thalion escaped. By luck, more than anything. But doing so made him a fugitive. He could tell the authorities, but who'd believe him? There was only one way to clear Thalion's name, and that was to capture his master and force him to confess. Except, the school was empty when he returned. Where could he have gone?
It all began with Gabaras' folly!
It was a hunch. A wild guess made from desperation. But, it was better than nothing. And so, Thalion changed his appearance as best he could, stole a sword and some supplies. His next stop, Gabaras.
Magic : Thalion's mana veins appear in two places; spreading from his chest to his abdomen and his arms, and from the crown of his head to his arms. Due to this, his spells are cast through somatic gestures, or by flourishing a weapon.
Bladedance Arcana
Elemental Blade: Channeling mana into a weapon, Thalion can embue a weapon with the power of: Fire, Water, Frost, Lightning, or Air.
Arcane Shot: By gesturing with his hands, Thalion can fire off a blast of pure arcane energy for a ranged attack.
Arcane Shield: By making a gesture with his hand, Thalion can conjure a spell circle expanding from his palm to a diameter of three feet. While able to block most attacks, a considerable amount of force can break the shield.
Moonlit Eyes: By closing his right eye and imagining the moon, Thalion can give himself night vision.
I especially like how you've described your magic and how their mana flows through their body. I should probably emphasize how mana veins affect magic but so far everyone's doing really cool stuff >:D
I just have a few questions, your character is a half-elf and 20 would most likely be like elven stages of infancy or childhood, but I'm not too certain since your character is HALF HALF elf-- ashdahdas, either way, there's not BIG problems here it's just a slight nitpick.
Other than that your character is good to go and can be thrown into the Character Bin!!! >:D
Another note--
Your character spells "Arcane Sense" is just a flavored Arcane Sense that every mage knows so if you want to replace that ability-- that's totally fine!
Well. I don't know how Half-Elves age, in comparison to full Elves and Humans. So, I went by D&D rules. As for the spell, I'll think over what to place instead. I might redo the list, because they feel a bit generic?
Everyone is good to post! I'll give it about a week and half until I stsrt pestering people to do their paaart, otherwise I'm just waiting on Wander to finish his details and we should be good to go! APPEARANCE Wend stands at a staggering 6”0, much shorter than the average for both Elves and Grescerae alike! With thick skin tinted the color of mint, the dark-green veins that run along his limbs are easier seen. Thus, whenever spotted outside of his work, this plant of a man has been described as the walking epitome of the color green. Our half-blood here sports an athletic and lean frame born out of necessity from his profession and speed through many a mile without needing to slow down (on a well-hydrated day).
PERSONALITY With a mind that races almost as fast as he does through dense thickets, he is referred to as anything but slow. Quick to think, quick to act. The world is an open book for Wender, and the man’s thirst to learn only continues to grow. Energetic, fully curious, and a little bit snarky, these are the reasons why he was chosen to embark on such a mission (aside from how nobody else wanted to).
BACKGROUND Born from a strange pairing between an Elvish father and a Gresceric mother, Wender was proof that love (and biology) knew no bounds.
Growing up, he was always seen with his face buried in storybooks. Being half-plant meant that he’d need as much rest as possible in order to grow strong and healthy, but alas, his inquisitive heart burned brighter than the sun that fuelled his limbs. His parents even joked that they’d given birth to the land’s up-and-coming Lore Master.
So when this young seedling turned the age of 40, he was set to be transplanted to a place much further away - a new island where his father’s people decided to settle down. The Amber Grove, of the Kingdom of Somnius, they called it. You see, it was customary for every Grescera to be escorted to a designated continent for any reason that promoted the health of the World. In this case, the kingdom in question was newly formed; a bud made to blossom. As such, the Elvish community that settled down alongside two others had requested an urgent fleet of Grescerae to provide them with suitable shelter for its people. Upon hearing this, without so much as a yelp and a great bear hug, he was already packed up and rearing to go. His parents had not done much to stop him, as dismayed as they were to see their only son go. After all, despite being only half, those with Gresceric blood required their own unique conditions to grow and be able to reach their fullest potential.
Wender arrived in time to bear witness to the dethroning of King Loriel, the now-former Ruler of The Groves. In his place, the elves were graced with the arrival of the thirteen council members who sought to “correctly” manage their land.
From then on, upon setting foot in the fairly new land, Wend put in the most effort to provide support to his team dubbed the “Second Growers”. Though they had not been the first, Wender and his comrades set out to help the Amber Groves flourish and blossom into the Kingdom it’s known to be this day.
When the Second Growers Guild turned into the Conservationists, Wend was more than happy to provide more of his services. In the Amber Groves, he could be seen darting between trees, securing a perimeter around the forest, and making sure that each Elf’s home got the nutrients it needed to stay strong. Should a tree begin to wane, the Conservationists along with the Elves’ magic were there to make sure that they were restored. In time, the Conversationists’ Guild grew and branched out to the rest of Somnius.
Before being recruited to the Gabaras effort, Wend had spent decades working alongside earthen mages to survey the land, prevent disasters and provide naturally-grown homes to the elven, orcish, and otheros communities alike.
However, for the longest time, he felt stuck. This standstill in his life urged him to seek a mission different from the one he’s been given - and that was when the fall of Gabaras rolled about, eagerly looking for those equally keen to join their ranks.
And so, he wrote a letter detailing his whereabouts to his parents, and bid his comrades a see-you-soon. Wender was off on a new mission-- and awfully late, at that...
"The earth has a lot to say, and it wants to remind you that it’s okay to shut up sometimes!”"
MAGIC Wender inherited magical capabilities from his father and the ability to tune into flora from his mother. Unlike a normal Grescera, his Elvish blood allows him to manipulate mana and weaponize the force of nature should he need to.
Through his work for the Conservationists’ Guild, he has learned how to focus his gift of mana towards his hands and ears. Hands for ease of flow between his body to the earth, and ears for greater hearing - plants do love to talk, after all.
USABLE SPELLS
《PLANT-WHISPERER》The act of listening, truly listening to one's surroundings can provide more information and perhaps even visions of memories past. Wender’s race shares a strong relation to these living beings, allowing them to communicate in hushed whispers should he spare them the time.
《GROW: PRETTY STRONG VINE》The gift of mana and plant manipulation go hand-in-hand to perform incredible feats! Such as growing a durable vine to climb, substitute for rope, or even entangle/ensnare enemies.
《GROW: ACCELERATION》Using mana and pouring it into the earth allows for the quick supply of nutrients to the natural flora in the surrounding area (limit: 5 sqft.)! Grows chosen flora rapidly.
《MANA: TRANSFER》By focusing well enough, Wend is able to transfer his mana to other mana-users to supply their own magic. Can only be used twice a day-- replenishes after rest.
《MANA: IMPROVED LISTENING》By channeling mana to his eardrums, Wend can increase his hearing range to about 50 feet, bolstering 《PLANT-WHISPERER》. Usually used when he is observing the Amber Groves and scouting for any flora in danger.
