It would be nice to hang out with another beer appreciator but unfortunately she finds it hard to look past the stereotypical popular white jock he was back then, even if he’s mellowed out now. She’s cordial to him and his wife at least when they pop by the store. Has made the mistake of asking if there were any kids on the way at least once.

Depends if she was one of Freya’s ‘unlikely friends’. Sara would have wanted to keep it under wraps, knowing how other people viewed her relationships as weirdly contractual. If anyone knew about it, Freya – or worse, other people – would likely just assume she was using the rich girl for popularity or a brief escape from middle class life.
If they weren’t friends then Sara wouldn’t take the initiative to talk to her. Freya would just be a face she’d note from the periphery of a party.

The bathroom encounters were an inevitability. Sara would have tried making an acerbic comeback before realizing there was no way she’d ever beat a mean girl in a competition of smack talk. She used a different bathroom for the rest of that school year.
The years have passed and Sara has let go of her grudge, chalking it down to it being a standard high school experience. Honestly, after the cheerleader drama, the thing that stands out the most about Hanna in her mind is her hypocrisy.

They probably were good friends. Decathlon buddies? Sara would have been openly jealous of his superior grades but also appreciative that there was another person who excelled through hard work rather than natural talent. Out of the cast, he’s the only one she would have tried staying in contact with after graduation, though that stopped after a measly few months.

If Genesis was the one chugging vodka on the table, Sara was the one wiping the shoeprints off afterwards. Sara secretly prided herself on knowing how to avoid trouble.

Jack @nodogs
A casual friend in high school likely. She would have tried recruiting Jack to the girl’s soccer team several times, until it became a running joke between them (from Sara’s perspective anyway). Though Sara would consciously avoid the Bistro, since they both stayed in Delton and weren’t actively hostile, there's a good chance Jack is the person Sara is most familiar with out of the cast currently.

Genesis would like chilling with Jack and playing hooky. Genesis hated school and often sat in the back of the class, maybe making sardonic comments to Jack under her breath or passing her notes? I think they'd have that kind of relationship built on similar mindsets - not quite friends, but they hung out with each other here and there nevertheless kinda thing.

I don't really see Lucas and Genesis being friends. If anything, Genesis was probably rude to Lucas on one or two occasions, not consistent enough for her to be a bully but enough that he probably doesn't have a very good opinion of her.

Genesis would be a frequenter at Freya's parties. I can even see them being friends, though Freya hanging around with the popular clique being a point of contention between the two as Genesis is one of those people who pride themselves on being "real".

It could be possible for Connor to be the one Genesis' vomited on at the party lmao. If that's the case, I can see Genesis often bickering and insulting Connor because of the embarrassment of the whole thing afterwards.

I can see Genesis being annoyed with Billy, especially if he dragged her into the limelight once or twice. She doesn't like attention, despite how much negative attention she usually gets, and it would really annoy her.

Obviously these are all just first thoughts and suggestions, I'd love to hear what you think as well, since of course you know your own characters better.

Mier: Billy would be decent to him, but probably didn't have a lot of interest or common ground to form any real friendship.

Sara: if she helped with theater or school talent shows, they would be well acquainted. If I'm reading her right, they both have a people pleasing streak that probably put them together on the same tasks a lot. If you're cool with it, maybe he asked her out once, got rebuffed and kept his distance since.

Hanna: Billy was well liked, but in high school that's not the same as popular, and for the most part they didn't really move in the same circles. They did, however, follow each other on Instagram, and actually still do(though, for his part Billy is only vaguely aware of the fact).

Genesis: I think they could easily have been "party friends." They'd go out and drink together, but not really because they liked each other. When sober they probably detested each other's company, so I think they'd have had a tempestuous relationship if they had any at all.

Lucas: Feel free to reject this, but I think they might have been close until they both abruptly moved out of their respective homes after graduation. Two not-quite-out queer teens gravitating toward each other over illicit smoke breaks.

Being frequently surrounded by snobs and gossips and clout chasers, Freya probably gravitated toward Jack (whenever she could find her around school, at least) when she needed a breather. To Freya, her indifference was like an oasis. They probably wouldn't talk about anything too deep, maybe sometimes would even just listen to music together? Whatever it is, Freya would have been relaxed around her.

Knew him to be a target of certain groups she hung out with. They probably had a couple of AP classes together, since Freya did pretty well academically? She knew how smart he was and probably quietly rooted for him to get through high school so he could properly bloom into his potential.

Ooh, yes, I’d like for her to be one of the unlikely friends! Maybe when Freya and her family first moved in, it was Sara who welcomed her? Freya could have known Willard too. Maybe they have a secret place they go to meet up and hang out, because Freya knew not to get anyone involved in the scandals that plagued her. Sara would have been a trusted confidant, and she opened up to her more than she normally would.

Freya would have regretted not keeping in contact with her after they moved back to New York without a word, mirroring what Willard did just months prior.

Hanna

Hanna definitely knows of Freya, somehow. Perhaps even after Delton? Seeing as both of them live in NY. I don't know where to start the connection, though. There is quite a few strings to use here, especially this one "Although she often hung around her elitist clique...". I'm thinking Hanna and her buddies belong to that title.

Yes, I would think that Hanna and her friends are part of the popular circles that Freya surrounded herself with! Freya always invited people over to her stereotypical rich girl house, so maybe they saw each other pretty often?

Freya would have only tolerated Jennifer and Madeleine at best, and she didn't care for any of their mean girl shenanigans. Hanna would have intrigued her more, mostly because of their conflicting worldviews. She often wondered how Hanna wasn't exhausted from putting so much stock on what other people thought of her.

How do you think they'd get along in NY? Freya is currently a creative director for a fashion magazine, so they’d have some overlap in that area? Her mom’s a socialite so they have connections galore.

Yep, that's what I think too! A lot of her other ‘friends’ don't like Genesis and some were downright afraid of her acerbic remarks and candor, but Freya admired her for it, however brutal it could be. Genny would have known which rumors about Freya were real, and they'd laugh at the more ridiculous ones.

Maybe there was a point where they started hanging out a lot, beyond the parties. Freya would have known Genny didn't like the other people she surrounded herself with, but she was too afraid to let them go. They'd been necessary in keeping her distracted from the drama at home. Her refusal to break ties with them could have led to them drifting apart?

Freya would have heard about the incident with his dating profile and maybe approached him to help him deal with being the subject of a rumor? She sympathized a lot with his plight, even though she knew their circumstances were completely different. Her life definitely didn't get upended like his over a rumor. It probably didn't help that she hung around the people that put him in that situation, though.

Hm, Freya’s family is pretty shady, so I’m wondering if her dad and his would have some sort of connection?

But yeah, like calls to like, and even if Freya and Ben might not have interacted too much, she would have seen him as a sort of kindred spirit. It's in the way he conducted himself, the perfectly manicured persona – it was all too familiar.

Think they would have been around the same circles? He was easy enough to get along with, so Freya liked him. Maybe she liked how he didn't fawn over her like some of the other boys did. She would have probably called him late at night so she could get away from her own home drama, maybe joined some of his nightly car rides.

I can see Billy being one of those she actually considered a true friend. Freya would have admired his strong sense of self. His music is not her usual cup of tea, but when she's had a few drinks, she loves it. Maybe she even sings along when he plays piano. She has a nice, sweet voice, but it’s not meant for pop punk lol

When he released his album, she bought it to support him, but found she likes to blast it on the speakers whenever she needs to be in the zone for work. If he ever had a show in New York, she would have gone to see it.
