Six Months Ago:

Steve Rogers had seen the end of a lot of battles, having served through most of World War II. And yet, standing in the ruins of New York City, Steve couldn’t help but despair. Among the destroyed streets of Brooklyn, Steve walked slowly. Even though a lot had changed since the 1940s, Steve could still recall the neighborhood in which he grew up.

As he turned the corner, Steve passed by where the barber shop he used to frequent once stood. It was a testament to the destructive power of Hydra, as many major cities around the world were just as ruined. The fall of SHIELD had led to great heartache, as civilians walked among their ruined homes, still visibly shaken from the battle that had ended a mere day ago.

Eventually Steve Rogers reached his destination. In front of him was a small apartment building. It was mostly intact, save a collapsed wall on its west side. Steve couldn’t help but remember those propaganda posters he had seen during the war, what would happen to their homes if the Nazis reached America.

And yet the Neo-Nazis of Hydra had reached America, infiltrating its government and controlling global events. While this deception had been revealed, it came at great cost. From where Steve was standing, he could still see the SHIELD Helicarrier, crashed into the bay just outside of the city. But that wasn’t as bad to him as seeing the building in front of him. It was once Steve’s childhood home.

“I’m sorry,” said someone from behind Steve.

The man known as Captain America didn’t need to turn to know it was Nick Fury. The former head of SHIELD had been a constant part of Steve’s life since awakening in modern day, having been instrumental in forming the Avengers.

“Nick, how could we let this happen?” Steve asked.

“We were blindsided Rogers, too secure in our own power,” replied Nick Fury.

The one-eyed spy master took a step next to Steve Rogers, “New York seems to have caught the worst of it.”

“It’s bad all over,” stated Steve.

“I only saw the beginning of it before Hydra shot down my Quinjet over the Northern Atlantic.”

“And I assume that means you’re dead.”

“Not just Nick Fury, but SHIELD as a whole is dead. The world would never trust us again.”

“Then what? We let AIM, Zodiac, and countless alien invaders have their way with the planet?”

“No. Someone needs to step up. The Avengers must step up.”

“Even with the Avengers and all the other hero teams, we barely defeated Hydra.”

“Look, the Avengers are already called Earth’s mightiest heroes. Would it be a stretch to make them Earth’s greatest defense organization.”

“Do you mean that the Avengers replace SHIELD?”

“No, I mean that the Avengers become better than SHIELD ever was.”

“Nick, people don’t want this happening ever again.”

“No they don’t. But they also love the Avengers. Your online ratings are at an all time high.”

“So you want us to step up?”

“Only if you want to,” Nick Fury then began to walk away, “Just an idea to think about.”

Soon, Steve Rogers was left alone in front of the damaged building he had once called home. Seeing the destruction and the plight of the civilians made him angry. But he knew that he had to use that anger in a productive way. He never wanted this to happen again, and perhaps he could prevent it if he stepped up, if he led the Avengers into a new, different frontier.

THE TORCH

Current Day:

It had been almost eighty years since Jim Hammond had last lived in New York City. Created in the lab of Dr. Phineas Horton, New York was all that Jim had known for the first year of his existence. But sure had it changed from the nineteen-forties to the twenty-twenties. It had gotten just so, tall.

But height didn’t matter to Jim as he was able to soar through the air, a bright fireball streaking the modern skyline of Manhattan. The man once known as the Human Torch lived up to the name, brightening up the sky. Of course he had now dropped the Human part from his name as another more well known hero was using the name the Human Torch. Plus, Jim wasn’t exactly human.

Born a synthetic person, Jim was a marvel of science, his exact creation methods still mostly unknown. Yet why his powers worked, didn’t matter so much to Jim, just the fact that they worked. So he rose over the tops of the skyscrapers, his flames flickering a little bit in the part of the sky with thinner oxygen. Not wishing to risk it, Jim dove back down through the clouds.

Only to encounter a news helicopter right in front of him. The fiery android had to make a quick maneuver to dodge the blue helicopter. As he readjusted himself in air, Jim spotted what the helicopter was following.

On the streets below was a squad of police cars following a black van. Even from up in the sky, Jim could hear the rattle of gunfire. Wanting to help, Jim swooped down, launching a torrent of flames. The intense heat of the flames melted the back wheels of the fleeing vehicle, causing it to skid out and crash into a pole.

Jim then landed next to the crashed vehicle, raising his flaming hands as the thieves exited the vehicle. Clearly not wanting to deal with someone seemingly made of fire, the criminals raised their hands into the air.

As the police arrived, one went up to Jim, “Thanks for the help, Human Torch,”

“Actually I’m the Torch, no Human,” replied Jim as the cop walked away.

A little miffed, Jim decided to not stick around. But before he could lift off back into the air, a beeping came from inside his suit pocket. Extinguishing his flames, Jim pulled the Avengers ID Card he was issued out of the pocket of his red fireproof suit. The image of Steve Rogers, director of the Avengers, appeared in the corner of the card.

“This is Director Rogers calling all members of the New York branch,” stated the card, “Please report to Avengers Mansion for a mission briefing.”

Once the image disappeared, Jim put the card away. This would be his first actual mission as an Avenger, only joining them after Steve put him high on the list for Project: Unlimited recruits. Jim immediately joined, glad to be working with his former comrade again.

Jim then lifted off the ground and began heading towards Avengers Mansion, the original home of the Avengers. Within a few minutes, Jim landed in front of the building. As he got close, a whole array of sensors scanned him, confirming his identity.

“Welcome, the Torch, to Avengers Mansion,” said a robotic voice.

The doors then swung open, letting the synthetic man inside. Jim briskly walked through the entrance hall, coming upon the elevator at the end. Once inside, another voice asked him for his destination.

“Briefing room please,” Jim stated.

The elevator then began to descend almost effortlessly. There was no noise as the elevator traversed the large tunnels built beneath the mansion. Within thirty seconds, Jim had arrived.

Taking a step into the briefing room, Jim saw that the walls were completely lined with monitors, and that there was a massive table in the center of the room, easily sitting twenty plus people. Seeing that no one else had arrived yet, Jim decided to take the seat nearest to the elevator.

Once sitting firmly in the comfy office chair, Jim relaxed and began to wait. Truth be told, he wasn’t entirely sure what the final line up of the New York branch had ended up being, so this meeting would be a good chance to get to know his teammates.

Kate woke up screaming. Another nightmare, another memory of the fall of New York and her near death experience at the hands of Hydra and her own parents. It had been six months after and she still couldn't get over it. Sighing, she got up and got dressed. It was during her morning routine that she got a message in the mail. It was a card. An AVENGERS card. She blinked, astonished as a hologram of none other than Captain America.

“This is Director Rogers calling all members of the New York branch,” stated the card, “Please report to Avengers Mansion for a mission briefing.”

Huh, the Avengers are still around? I thought they disbanded?

Hours later, she was standing the Avengers tower lobby, presenting her card to the person at the desk.

"Briefing room please!"

And then, one Elevator ride later, she was right beside a man who looked like the Human Torch.

"Oh! Are you the Human Torch?"

Captian Marvel didn't bother with the front entrance, she just flew in through the roof. She didn't even need to ask where the briefing room was, she knew this tower inside and out, being an Avenger herself. As she walked, she remembered her failure. HEr failure of defending New York against the Hydra horde. They still won, but now even months later, New York was still recovering and Shield had disbanded. What was to come of the future?

Never mind that, she thought, there's a new mission to be had.

As she floated down, see two newcomers. A young girl that fancied herself "Hawkeye" no doubt, and another person that she mistook to be the Human Torch at first but at second glance realized he wasn't.

"Nice to know I am not the first to arrive." she said conversionally as she touched down.

NYC Streets

Peter swung from building to building, patrolling the streets for any criminals that needed an attitude adjustment. Standing on top of a corporate building, he took a moment to take in the sight of NYC. Even after all of these years of protecting the city, he was still amazed by how beautiful the city was even with such large skyscrapers. Scanning the area he noticed a bunch of suspicious men running from a bank into a black sedan. The web-slinger quickly shoots some webs on the adjourned building, swinging himself towards the moving vehicle. Swinging himself so his feet shattered the window of the passenger’s window, kicking one of the robbers in the head. “SHIT IT’S SPIDERMAN!!” One of the robbers in the passenger’s seat aimed his gun at the wall-crawler, Peter quickly grabbed the man by the hand, easily breaking his hand with a loud CRACK. Quickly looking at the driver, he shot a few webs to make his hands stuck to the wheel. “Keep your eyes on the road.” Quickly grabbing the robber he had previously kicked in the head, getting his arm wrapped around his neck. Now focus on the robber near the driver.

Shooting a small ball of webs to bounce off the ceiling of the car, hitting the robber in the head Essentially knocking him out cold. Looking over at the man whose hand he just broke, glaring at him underneath his mask. “Your move creep.” Tightening his grip on the neck of the robber, who probably was suffering from a concussion. Before he could react, Peter shot a couple of webs to pin his body to the car door. Knocking out his human shield, before turning his attention towards the driver. Poking his head from between the front seats, “Mind pulling over, this is my stop.” The sedan suddenly stopped with Peter getting out of the passenger’s door. Noticing the cops starting to swarm around the sedan, “Come out of the sedan with your hands up, and lay on your stomach with your hands behind your back.” One of the police officers yelled out, while the other officers finally noticed what had happened.

“Oh Spiderman, Thanks for stopping these guys.” One of the cops said while the others noted what happened to the robbers in the car. “No problem, it’s a nice break from stopping a crazy in a rhino costume. How’s George?” Peter had not seen George Stacy for a couple of months now, he had been so busy with being a superhero and trying to take care of Maybelle. He had not had time to visit him, he wondered if the old man was angry at him for not catching up with him. “He’s good, been kinda keeping to himself lately. Wonder if he’s gonna be okay.” This only confirmed to Peter that he should check up on George. God knows he’s feeling alone ever since his wife recently passed away, “Come on Pete, you gotta go see George he’s all alone. No daughter and now no wife to keep him company.” His mind was racing with what he would do next. “Well I gotta go, but I’m sure you guys can book the three stooges over here.” Peter pointed his thumb towards the sedan, hearing the groans of the criminals inside. After saying goodbye to the police officers, he swung around the corner of the street, deciding to give George Stacy a quick visit.

While he was making his way to Stacy’s house, he could hear his Avengers ID going offf. “Damn it, not now.” Swinging towards the top of a building, he checked his watch telling him to go to the Avenger’s Mansion for a mission. He could not ignore a call from the Avengers to visit a lonely old man. “Sorry George, I promise I will see you later tonight.” Stating to swing towards the mansion, using as many of the shortcuts as he knew to get there quickly.

Avenger’s Mansion, Situation Room.

Walking through the front door he knew the place in and out even with Fury changing the layout during the last few decades. The A.I. in the mansion buzzed to life, “Welcome Mr.Parker, Mr. Rogers and Mr.Fury have not arrived just yet to the mansion. Would you like to go somewhere to pass the time?” Peter smiled underneath his mask, “I’ll just be in the gym, let me know when it’s time to head to the situation room.” And with that, he took the elevator to the gym underneath the first floor. Not bothering to change, and keeping his costume on. Even with his day of fighting crime, he still felt he needed to burn some of this aggression on the punching bag. Finding it oddly soothing to punch the crap out of the sandbag for a couple of hours. “Mr.Parker, you are needed in the situation room.” And with that Peter left the gymnasium, taking the elevator to the situation room.

As he walked into the room he noticed Jim Hammond, “Hi Jim. Long time no see. How ya been?” He waved his hand towards the Human Torch. Jim like Captain America and Bucky were heroes that he looked up to as a child. Being told stories by his Uncle Ben, who had been a soldier during WW2. Taking a seat across from The Human Torch, waiting for Cap or Fury to show up and start explaining their mission. Although he was quite hesitant ever at first, since the revelation that Hydra was controlling S.H.I.E.L.D. But Cap had assured him that they would be working for the greater good, and they would be more vigilant of Hydra trying to gain control of the Avengers. A memory came into his head of when he was first starting out as a hero, sitting in the situation room with the many great heroes. Hoping to make a good impression, and have them accept him as an Avenger. By now he had earned his place as an Avenger, even though he felt he doesn’t deserve it.

Sleepwalker

Avenger’s Mansion, Situation Room.

Alexandra was fast asleep, resting her head on the table of the situation room. Having travelled from New York to the mansion was quite exhausting. This would be her first mission with the Avengers, but she was not looking forward to interacting with the others. Especially the two other mutants. She didn’t really have a good relationship with other mutants like herself. The voice in her head was telling her to ignore those bad thoughts, and to just do the job that was given by Human Torch. The only person she really knew was Spiderman, but even they barely knew each other.

She mostly lived by herself in that cramped apartment in Sugar Hill. She doesn’t really have many friends, mostly business associates when it comes to her painting career. She was fast asleep, in a dreamland currently. Speaking with a version of the other Avengers in her head. Waiting to be woken up for the mission briefing.

Wiccan and Speed

Billy couldn’t believe it. Ever since his encounter with Wanda that day, his life had changed drastically. Now he was here playing Video Games in the Avengers Mansion like it was nothing. Now he was summoned to a mission by Captain America, and he would be working with actual superheroes that he idolized ever since he was a child. He wanted to thank the Scarlet Witch for everything she had done for him, but she suddenly went MIA…

He entered the situation room excitedly. So far, only a few other heroes had arrived. Billy recognized two of them right away, and immediately ran ahead to greet them. “Oh my gosh! I’m actually face to face with Spider-Man! Wow! This is so cool. Not as cool as meeting Scarlet Witch, but this is pretty high up there. I don’t care what the Bugle says. I still think you’re awesome!” Billy smiled nervously, unsure if that was the right thing to say…

The other superhero Billy recognized was Captain Marvel. He ran to her next. “Oh my gosh! Captain Marvel! You’re really cool too! “Sooo… my name is Billy… I mean Wiccan. Are we supposed to use our other names here or not? What’s it like being a super hero? You got any advice for an up and comer like me?”

Just then, a green blur dashed into the room, before the blur turned into a white haired boy, who . “Yeah, I got advice for ya. Quit acting like a dork! You’re gonna embarass yourself and everyone else!” He then turned to the rest of the group. “The name’s Speed. I’m sure you can guess why…”

He then zipped into a chair, and started fidgeting and snapping his fingers. “Can we hurry along please?! Let’s go! What’s taking so long to get this shit started?! I’ve got things to do and places to be!”

Quicksilver

Battery Park! It was just as thrilling as Pietro, Piers if you knew him well enough, remembered. Vague memories of the first time he and Wanda visited drifted through his mind. The Statue of Liberty loomed in the background, watching over the city like… it was pretty creepy if he thought enough about it, so he tried not to. “What building is that?” Wanda had asked excitedly, pointing to yet another Skyscraper. “What bridge is that?” To Piers, they all looked the same, so he made up random names that Wanda eagerly believed.

The first time that the twins visited the park, he mistakenly called it Central Park, because there were no batteries or electrical outlets he could find. Piers stopped briefly to watch some buskers, and bought a hot dog from an older looking man with a cart, adding both ketchup and mustard because there simply was no finer combination. He turned around, half expecting to see his sister chastising him for always eating, though truth be told, she made sure to pack plenty of snacks when they were together. He missed that. He missed them just being them. He didn’t care how it sounded - which was a lie - he’d never say it outloud, of course, not to anyone but Wanda, but this was definitely was not what he planned or hoped for. Sure, Wanda would disappear now and again. He was no stranger to wanderlust himself, and less of a stranger to needing some time and distance. The thought helped him sleep at night at least, at least until the alarm went off.

Beep Beep Beep – he snapped out of his stupor, and he involuntarily scowled. “Jebiga,” he swore under his breath, pulling the card from his pocket. Rogers wants a meeting? That elicited a curious eyebrow quirk. At least that would keep his mind occupied. He started to speed off, stopping only momentarily to offer what he considered a sexy lopsided grin at two pretty women in the park. His smile faded as he backed into a corner mail bin, near sending him sprawling. It elicited a laugh from the two women, which he’d be comfortable thinking was a flirty gesture back when it replayed in his head weeks from now as he tried to sleep. He sheepishly took a few steps back and spinning on his heels, took a cleansing breath before sprinting to the Avengers Mansion on 5th. He’d be there in a blink.

Piers stopped short in the situation room, quickly assessing the uh… situation. “Torch. Fury. Cap, he said, nodding in greeting. “Arrow Kid, Kid I don’t know, Cat napper, holy crap, other Cap,” he smiled at Captain Marvel, impressed. “Kid who…” he stopped mid sentence. Kid who looked like him, wait, what? He did a double take, eyeing the other speedster with the silvery hair, both his eyebrows raised. No, noooooo…. He inwardly chuckled. He was careful, always, and if he didn’t have anything on him, he could be to a bodega and back in a blink with a full pack. He narrowed his blue eyes to get a better look. “Quick… Silver…” he introduced himself to the room, in case there was anyone he hadn’t yet met. He was bad with names. And faces. And made up heroey names, and most plotlines of novels he had to read when going to night school, but that was a different story for a different time. For now he had to focus. Concentrate. Breathe.

Dagger

Tandy stood in the front of the mirror in her room, feet in Croisé, like the woman instructing on her phone. Sure, New York was teeming with dance studios, but at 19, she was far too old to start en pointe training, and besides, who had time for any of that? This was New York, there was always something happening somewhere. Some sort of trafficking that needed to be dealt with, some big baddie strolling up like he owned the place. Besides, Ballet was mostly a form of meditation, a workout like no other, and she liked her feet too much to spend hours ruining them.

“Plié ….. Plié ….” the woman droned in a French accent. “Grande Jeté…” Tandy lept to the side, just as the card in her pocket sounded.

“Captain Rogers in the situation room….” She hastily swapped pulled a pair of pants over the leotard, rolling them at the waist. And pulled her hair out of the bun, tousling it for good measure. “Assemblé” she chuckled to herself, sliding into a pair of running shoes.

Tandy wouldn’t say she loved New York, but then again, she didn’t hate it either, better or worse it was home, and home was something else she didn’t take for granted. Kate was already in the situation room with Torch and some others. She resisted the urge to ask what was the sitch, cursing the late nights she and Cloak would spend watching Kim Possible down at the shelter. This wasn’t for play, not with Captain Marvel there, and with an emergency meeting called, she took her place with the others.
