Alyona

@Dezuel

The lance managed to land true, but it didn't seem to affect the boy at all. 'Some kind of immunity? I didn't feel anything absorbed from the hit...' Alyona's mind raced. 'Water control and magical immunity? Which spirit did his harlot of a mother please to get all of these-' Her train of thought was interrupted when he sent her lance right back towards her.

'-gifts?!' Alyona dodged out of surprise more than anything: Her lances were extensions of her in some way that she didn't fully understand; they seemed to be unable to harm her in any way, and she had tried... Extensively. She could grasp them, and even stand upon them, use them to play with her own hair, or twirl them in her hands, yet if they were thrown straight upwards in the air and landed back on her they simply were reabsorbed by her body or aura. It was something that her mentor remarked as a wonderful upside to her power, which had always irked Aly. It was a silver lining in the most trivial of ways; normal people couldn't grasp the lances anyway, and if a particularly gifted individual managed to, they'd be suffusing their hands with curses the entire time.

She didn't let the reminiscence distract her as she readied another wave of knives, but before the first arrived the boy had simply popped out of existence. She didn't see him duck behind any nearby cover - he had disappeared entirely. 'He's gone? Did the gods agree with me?' Alyona didn't understand what happened, but she turned to run - and the youth was back, this time blocking her escape route.

"[Teleporting too?! Your whore mother certainly got around-!]" Was all Alyona managed to say in Yekaterinan before being grabbed by the vortex. Being thrashed about was one thing, and being submerged in icy water against her will was another, but even a proud maiden of Yekaterina such as Alyona hadn't experienced both at once. As she held her breath and tried to keep herself from getting whiplash, she half-consciously, half-unconsciously began drawing out lances, the bolts of negative energy being whipped around and launched out of the vortex by the motion of the water. It wasn't any kind of plan in her mind - if they landed on someone, somewhere, she may gain precious seconds of consciousness. As if the lances were extensions of her own spirit, they lashed out in every direction, seeking for a way out - or at least another living thing to inflict the same pain she felt.

Alexandria

Alex unpacked Michael's lunch. The feeling of guilt for taking up his lunch was overpowered by her hunger, and she already had taken up enough time wandering the halls and encountering strange foreign students. She opened up the case, nearly spilling its contents in the process.

"Huh...?" The plastic case contained a colorful lunch salad with white chicken meat as the protein and a light dressing. In other words, it was a perfect salad for a growing student. It looked just like the meals they showed for her health class.

'I-Is this what Michael eats every day?!' Alex's jaw nearly dropped. 'Where are the chips?! Or the chicken nuggets?! What is this!?' Taking the fork, she hesitantly speared some of the salad. Her stomach growled. She didn't have a choice - and Michael was nice enough to give it to her. She took a deep breath and took a bite.

Alex somehow managed to eat the lunch salad Michael gave her, though the experience somewhat changed her view of Michael. 'Is Michael undergoing some kind of intense training? I need to make sure he's not hurting himself with these radical dieting measures...' She thought over how she'd bring it up to him naturally as she gathered up her things in the classroom.

She didn't really think of a good way to bring it up, even as she walked through the hallways of St. Laurel's to meet her counselor. Her train of thought was somewhat hindered by a feeling of worry about the future: What her counselor might say, perhaps, but more importantly... Her meeting with Wolf.

Alex nearly stumbled out of the office, exhausted. It was clear that her counselor thought she was present for the Midnight incident, and was trying to make it clear that there would be serious issues if Alex ever did something like that again. Alex didn't really feel like the lecture was necessary - she was scarred enough from the experience as is. Of course, there were the standard papers Alex was to bring to her parents, which would never get filled out, and ignored entirely.

She pushed those thoughts out of her mind. The exit to Laurels lay just beyond her. She had to keep up a brisk pace, but she had a good amount of time to get to Clausewitz before the grounds were completely deserted. Worst case scenario, she would have to ask around to see if anyone knew where Wolf was.

The entire walk had her wracked with worry, imagining the different ways Wolf might react to her. Would he be as cold as Vera? Each time the thought crossed her mind, she wanted to stop in her tracks. 'I-I just want this to happen already so I can stop worrying about it!' Alex thought to herself, rubbing her temples. 'Wolf, you better not be the type to go home the second the bell rings!'

After what felt like an eternity of being holed up in her own head as she walked, Alex found herself at the gates of Clausewitz's Academy. There were a few stern-faced students walking out, as she expected, but she didn't immediately recognize Wolf. Not that she expected to find him within moments of arriving... But she secretly had hoped so. "W-Well... I got here, but now what...?" Alex felt like she stood out with Laurels' clean white uniform compared to the Clausewitz students, and suddenly realized that she may be crossing some kinds of rivalry-related turf without realizing it.

'W-Wolf! Just show up so I don't have to talk to these scary people!!' Alex silently prayed to herself - an event that was becoming more common as of late.

Wolf couldn't say he was terribly surprised by Zephyr's response. With the way he acted, all that was missing was a timer ticking down atop his head until the day came he made the wrong person mad and retribution was brought down upon him. Then again, sometimes the most successful people were also the worst people. Perhaps karma would remain blind to him for a long time yet.

"It's fine..." Wolf replied to Melissa, quite used to screaming and shouting -- especially from a woman. He considered asking how he could help, but she seemed to have that part under control at least. He recognized her, though only vaguely. He knew she was on the student council, specifically part of the disciplinary committee.

Unsurprisingly, Zephyr seemed above discipline. Money, power, and an all but, if not total, total disregard for authority made for a difficult to touch combo. All the more reason Wolf wanted nothing to do with him.

"Not your first time dealing with him I imagine." Wolf said to Melissa. "He's pretty much infamous for this, yet nothing seems to change. I get why you'd be frustrated."

Orpheuz

It had come as a surprise to the military clad young man, that the girl which he was now engaged in fighting was fighting against him so fiercely. Those strange daggerlike projectiles were flying out of his vortex of water, and he still didn't know if his gifts would protect him from them or not. He couldn't risk it and as such he made a quick sidestep to the side, which was more like a dodge. But alas the universal forces were playing tricks on him, as his feet landed on some discarded cardboard on the ground, causing him to slip. In doing so he reactively moved his hands to try catch himself, but in doing so it caused his watery vortex to violently slam itself into the nearby building wall, together with Alyona.

"Tch.. why now of all times?" He muttered in a agitated manner to his slipping, but he couldn't spend time on the ground. It was not graceful nor was it due for someone of his caliber to lie on the ground. That was benefitting only for the weak of will and body. While it had certainly been a time since he had felt weak, that time was over. His ruthless father had forged him into a force of destruction, even if his late father had not reached his ultimate goal. A small time thug-quest. That's what it had been.

'Become the head of a school. Such a pointless ambition. The world doesn't need to be divided into camps, it needs to be merged. Perhaps if all the schools could merge, then perhaps your meager dream would had some worth. Father.' The young man mused in his head as he cautiously approached his downed opponent, which was covered in black water. While it didn't stick to her like ink would, it had soaked the girl's entire attire.

'Now time to see what illgotten gains this lowlife robber have in their inventory.' Orpheuz leaned down and carefully moved the girl's both arms above her head, holding the arms in place with a firm grip at the wrist while his other hand searched for her wallet.

"Hm? What the-?" He said aloud as he found out that she had no more money on her. His facial expression which had a moment of surprise mixed with irritation changed to one of pity and compassion.

'No wonder she tried to mug me, she's poor. Hmm. So her unlawful behaviour is a result of misfortune and not something of prefered choice. Understandable but inexcusable nontheless. Order must be maintained, but the Rhea I knew had flawed order. Not like the other nations are much better. The law should be made by those of high morals, unwavering rightiousness and willingness to subdue the world for the greater good. Someone like me.' The thoughts came to him like a breath of fresh air.

'All hail, The Phantom Knight, your liberator. Once the threat to the worlds have been dealt with, I shall subdue this chaotic world and protect it. I'll be the shining beacon of justice, the flame which all the moths be drawn to. For the empress of shadows, I shall bend the heavens and plow the earth. In your image.' His inner monologue was briefly interupted as he realized he couldn't waste more time being in this alleyway, leaning over a would-be-robber all drenched in black water.

'Hmm.. now what to do with you? Your thieving ways must cease, yet I cannot offer you any wealth to redo your life. I cannot take you with me and school you on proper etiquette. The girl is way too fierce in temper, it would require much more time than I am willing to give. Right now I have more pressing matters to attend to. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learnt from this? Hmm. It would be cruel to take away her candy, for no doubt she must eat something. I am also not a thief.' He pondered abit further, while his eyes wandered over his opponent. She was still breathing right? She wasn't suffering from hypothermia right? While he had indeed fought her, it wasn't to cause her bodily harm. At least not much. It would be unbefitting of someone of his stature to simply just walk off without making sure that his thug-like opponent was in a state to not fall victim to some other thug.

It took the young man a few moments before he took his free hand and softly began to slap Alyona over the face. "Hey thief. Wake up. Do you hear me thief?" Orpheuz said in an irritated manner, he couldn't help but feel this girl was wasting his time by being out of it. Then again it had been he which had made it happen, although most surely it was her own fault. At least that's what he assured himself of. No doubt the girl would be unable to fight back now anyways, so perhaps she could tell him what she was thinking? That was a good idea.

"What were you thinking? Why are you not in an orphanage if you are poor? Kids like you should be off the street." He said in his usual arrogant and high-and-mighty tone.

Alyona

@Dezuel

Alyona had blacked out - a single frame of black separated her from drowning in the vortex and waking on the cold ground. For a brief moment she thought she might have died. Unfortunately, it was not so. Even worse, the idiot in question was towering over her, asking something inane.

Alyona spit up water, hoping to catch the boy with it, but not quite putting enough strength into the movement to do so. "Kids like me?" She scoffed. "Kids like you belong at the gallows." Venom dripped from her words. She struggled to her knees, her clothing dripping wet, and a chill already settling in. "Go ahead. Do whatever you came here to do." She spat once again in his direction.

She wasn't in a position to fight, but she wasn't going to beg for mercy either. The boy probably didn't know she spent all her money, nor that she never carried anything too valuable on her anyway. How could he know that everything she did invited disaster?

Hajime Sakaurazaki

Hajime Sakurazaki was new to Mephistos', but vowed to make new friends, or at least allies, among the students there while hiding his Ungifted status. Despite the confidence that the young warrior had gained over the past few years, he still knew that outing himself as an Ungifted was bad. So he went over to the nearest student and said, "Greetings. My name is Hajime and I am a new student. Can you show me around the school? I can pay if you want."

The Nitta Clan had funded his trip and associated expenses, after all.

The lanky, black haired teen he'd called out to turned to him with an annoyed frown. His bored eyes drifted up and down, looking, judging. But when their eyes met, a spark of interest flashed in the teen's eyes. After a brief pause, he spoke.
"You a freshman? Guess it's not too late to start now, but you're a bit late to the party." He said, a playful smile creeping onto his face. "Well, whatever. I don't really want to get wrapped up in this, but..."
He took a coin out of his pocket.
"Heads or tails?"

Hajime nodded and said, "I feel lucky. Tails."

He was already taking this teen's measure, asking, "What is your name?"

"Duke."
He flicked the coin into the air, catching it halfway down and slapping it onto the back of his hand. Lifting it slowly revealed...
"Tails. Guess you are lucky today." He said.
Duke turned away from the boy and began making his way down the hallway, calling to him as he did.
"Come on, and be quick about it. If your luck holds out, you'll make it out of this in one piece."

"I have a sword," Hajime said as he followed Duke, all the while holding his katana on his belt. "Your school does not restrict the carrying of weapons much, I noticed. Isn't your country strict about those?"

The teen shrugged.
"Mephisto's is like its own country anyway. And besides, whether they see it or not, they can't stop us from having them."
Even this early in the morning there were some students roaming the halls, some with weapons visible and some without, though, that wasn't to say the latter weren't armed. Doubtless they had some kind of hidden weapon or powerful gift, ready and primed to fight, should the need arise. Notably, armed or no, most students avoided Duke, moving out of the way of the lanky youth as he loped down the hallway, some giving him dirty looks as he passed by.

He stopped just before one of the rooms, clearly an important one judging by the size of the door.
"This is the faculty office. If you have any issues with classes, you go here. The teachers usually don't help you, but..." Duke shrugged. "It's probably better than asking anyone else."

Hajime smirked and said, "That is all right; I need teachers who'd look the other way, anyway."

Then he continued, "How much do you know about the students? I can pay extra if that costs money. Or maybe do you a favor if you need something heavy lifted..."

A hint that he had a strong Gift of his own, which was a lie.

Duke mirrored his smirk.
"You're pretty forward for a freshman, I like that. Lucky for you, you found got the right guy. I know anyone who is anyone around here, first years excepted. You know, new year and all that crap."

Their conversation was brought to a halt at the loud stomping of boots heading towards their direction. A tall, burly and ugly third year student halted his steps in front of them, with 2 impish second years trailing behind him.
"Speaking of crap."
He made no attempt to hide his voice, and the third year student's already unsightly face scrunched up into an unpleasant glare. Duke calmly smiled in return, prompting him to turn his attention to the new student. He stared him up and down, just like Duke had done a moment ago, but he ended his inspection with an arrogant grin.

"Listen up newbie, this ain't a middle school daycare anymore, this is Mephisto's. We don't get our moms to wipe our asses for us anymore. I'm feeling generous today so I'll give you a choice. Join my gang and I'll show you how things work around here. Better than running with this bastard." He said, turning another glare at Duke.

The lanky youth continued to smile. Hajime's response was simple and curt, "No."

His sword was drawn in a flash, reflecting the light of the sun from the windows straight at the bully leader, then. After that, he'd cut at the second years' tendons with a swift flurry of slashes. Steel met flesh, and blood splashed onto the hallway. The students jumped back in surprise, but it was too late then. The second years collapsed on the floor screaming, while the third year looked at Hajime in shock. A shallow cut appeared on his throat and began bleeding. A split second reaction had saved his life. Tension built as he stood on the floor, cold sweat trailing down his forehead.

Suddenly there was a light tapping on the ground, as Duke walked over and put his hand on Hajime's shoulder.
"Easy there, tiger. You're nice and decisive, I'm liking you better and better. But since you're new here, let me give you a freebie."
He looke down at the burly third year, derision in his eyes.
"This is Leroy Stone. He talks a big game, but he's not that hot. Halfway into first year he was a giftless loser, and after gaining a gift, he turned into a gifted loser. 3 years of losing and now he's here, bullying first years like you." He said.
Fury grew in Leroy's eyes as the insults continued, and anger compelled him to rise to his feet with a roar. A red light shone around his body, and he drew a knife. Even so, Duke didn't seem very impressed.
"That red stuff is his blessing. The angrier he is, the more hits he'll soak up. So instead of just being a douchebag, he's now a punching bag."
He slapped Hajime on the back.
"Don't kill him, ok? Things'll get real messy if you do."

Hajime nodded, then said, "I'll make this quick, then."

He drew back a little, then cut at Leroy's belt with his katana, hoping to replace the other teen's anger with embarrassment for obvious reasons... Leroy was completely unable to react. The red aura immediately faded and the burly youth grabbed his pants. He tried to pull them up but stumbled awkwardly when they dropped down again. Duke burst into laughter at the scene and Leroy turned red again, for a different reason this time. Their fight had attracted some inlookers who whispered amongst themselves. Leroy's eyes darted around as he wrestled with his pants. He glared at Hajime and Duke, red aura rising (though a lot flimsier than when it had first appeared).
"I'll get you back for this, you bastards!" He exclaimed before running away, leaving his 2 lackeys bleeding in the floor.

Hajime then looked at Duke and said, "So, continue on? By the way, I am not part of your gang or any gang; I already have a liege."
Duke laughed even harder at that. He seemed to find an endless source of amusement in this serious little freshman. He settled down after some time, wiping tears from his eyes.
"Let's get out of here first. If we get caught by the prefects it'll be real pain in the ass." He said to the boy.
The strange pair headed out of the building, towards the communal garden.

With a solid clunk, 2 cans of soda emerged from the vending machine. Duke took one and threw the other to Hajime, before cracking his open.
"That was a solid fight, newbie. Haven't seen something that funny in a long time." He said, taking a sip of his drink. "Anyway, just who was it that you're looking for?"

Hajime nodded as he accepted a can and drank, before saying, "A Saint Laurel's student. The Legitimate Emperor of Izumo, Ken Illustrious Ikari."
Duke thought for a moment.
"No one I know, though he sounds pretty famous. You know what he looks like?" He asked.
Hajime showed his smartphone and pulled up a picture of Ken in response.

"I heard he was involved in a public incident involving one Doctor Nightman."

At that, Duke's mouth curved into a twisted smile.
"Nightman, huh? That old bastard... Alright, colour me interested."
He gulped down the rest of his drink and crumpled his can before throwing it towards one of the nearby bins. It was overflowing, as usual, so the can bounced off the pile of trash sitting on the rim and fell to the ground.
"This is something I would've looked into anyway, so let's talk about payment later." He said to Hajime.
Hajime nodded and said, "Perfect."
"Great."

The black haired teen began to walk back into the main building, when he suddenly stopped and turned back.
"Oh right, I forgot. Mind if I ask you something else?"
Hajime nodded once more, asking, "What would that be?"
"...You're a killer, right?"

The boy's eyes glinted as he said, "I don't kill for fun or money or unless ordered by my liege, and even then he'll stop being my liege if he orders something extremely immoral."

The Samurai followed up with, "I can break legs, though."

Duke stared at him for a moment, and then sighed and turned away, as if disappointed by his response.
"You're a real straight shooter, huh? Really just up and admitted like that?" He said, walking to the place where his can had fallen.
He took it up with his foot and kicked it up to his hand.
"Don't say that to anyone else, you hear? From anyone else it sounds like a joke. But from you..." He said, shaking his head.

He pitched the can towards the bin once again, an emptier bin this time.
"We've got a little unspoken rule here at Mephisto's; we don't talk about things we don't need others to know, and if someone gets caught, we don't know them, and we won't help them."
He whirled around and pointed a finger at the young samurai.
"That means you need to learn some subtlety, unless you want the prefects breathing down your neck for the rest of your life. You get me?"

Hajime froze a bit, then nodded, saying, "I will at least learn to shade the truth."

Duke sighed. He didn't seem to place much faith in the stoic first year.
"Alright, I can work with this." He said, extending his hand to the boy for a handshake. "Let's have a good business relationship."
Hajime shook Duke's hand and smiled, saying, "Sure!"

Duke had a baffled expression at his upbeat response. It was turning out to be quite difficult for him to get a handle on Hajime's emotions.
"Anyway, you better follow me. First year classrooms are this way." He said, dropping the handshake and walking back towards the school building.

And so Hajime followed, having made a new potential ally...

Maybe it was the recent incident, maybe it was just having seen it first-hand, or maybe it had been building up all this time, but he felt his jaw clench. He couldn't ignore the pressure building up inside him as he felt the undeniable twinges of anger as she described the longstanding issues surrounding Zephyr.

However, he quickly buried those feelings. He couldn't afford to get involved. Nothing good could come of tangling with someone like Zephyr. Not for him, Zephyr, or anyone else unfortunate enough to get pulled in.

"I'm sorry. I wish I could help." Wolf looked away and stood up. "I... just... sorry. I should go."

The day was pretty much over, and he still felt the lingering exhaustion from his long night at school. He had no desire to stay any later than he had to. This incident had already held him up enough as it was. After gathering his things, he joined the flow of students exiting the school.

At the exit a bright splash of white stood out from the rest of the crowd, drawing his eye. The individual drew many curious glances, but only Wolf felt himself slowing to a halt. His mind felt like it was swimming Something about this person, this girl, it...

. . .

"We can't see her today... I guess she fell asleep and won't wake up."

"B-but... she was OK..."

"What does that mean?" . . . "What does that mean!?"

. . .

He suddenly realized the crowd of students had thinned, with him just standing there, dazed and glassy-eyed. It had been a long time, but not so long as to render either of them unrecognizable to each other, and yet still his first instinct was denial. It couldn't be her. Why would she be here?

He forced himself back into motion until he crossed by the girl and stopped near her, "Um... are you looking for someone?" It couldn't be her...

Alex

Alex had waited a decent amount of time, enduring the stares of countless intimidating students. But she had to. Even if it was as negative as when she ran into Vera, it was something she had to get through.

It didn't help that there had been so much time since they last met. Alex wondered how much taller Wolf might have grown since she last saw him, or if he might have a different look entirely. Vera had definitely grown, Alex was certain of that. It made Alex doubt if she would even be able to spot him - he could manage to sneak past her! 'I-I should have made a sign or something! W-Would people think I'm a chaffeur, though? Wait, do I even care?' She made herself distracted, idly looking through her bag for the materials to make a sign.

One of the students finally came up to her while she was distracted. Alex nearly jumped from surprise when she was asked if she was looking for someone. "A-Actually yes, I'm looking for-" Her voice caught in her throat when she turned to see who asked her. "-Wolf?"

The person she was looking for managed to find her first. He did look a little different - He looked like he needed some sleep, really - but it was unmistakeably Wolf. Alex nearly leaned forward to hug him, but she stopped herself - she didn't want to suddenly act out like that. It would only hurt more if he rejected her... Like Vera did.

Attempting her best to keep a cool air (and more or less failing), she cleared her throat. "Um... H-Hello, Wolf... It's been... Um. Too long..." She couldn't maintain eye contact for more than a few syllables.

The young man narrowed his eyes at Alyona the moment the girl set her eyes at him again, and even more so when she decided to speak to him.

Not only were she carrying that defiant and resentful tone to him, but also claiming that he, he of all people would belong at the gallows. The very idea almost made him lower his guard for a moment to provide a mocking laugh, but this were no laughing matter. He had in the unfortunate circumstances decided to teach her a lesson, in the hopes it would make her understand. After all, dumb people could only understand blunt things, whereof punching the wits into their head were usually the best way about it.

But amidst his thoughts of displeasure on seeing this girl being so overly defiant and unrelenting, it made him oddly enough feel a slight bit of admiration. It wasn't the girl's will that had led to her loss, it was her body. She was headstrong. There were no doubt about it, and her power, whatever it were seemed very dangerous visually. Had his own powers not have been warped in his pathway to the world, who knows who the victor would have been? He decided he still had to reply to the thief.

"Hpmh! You have quite the nerve speaking to me like that... Insolent girl. You are a girl right? Abandon your brigand ways, don't waste your gift on petty crime." He said in a serious manner, his tone was however befitting of someone who had served the lady of shadows. He had to act the part of a noble, even if his core was very distant from the literal sense. His lady had however been more than a literal noble, she were noble in heart, and as such he would also have to be.

For how else could he herd all the witless sheep away from the butcher? He didn't know how long it would take before the enemy would reveal it's face in this world. If he had to beat up some ruffians to make them fall in line, so be it. Alyona was one such ruffian in his eyes. A piece of coal which may yet become a diamond, with the right guidance. Would his battle with her put anger in her heart and make her train harder or abandon her path, then it would all serve in the interest for the coming battle. As Alyona struggled up to her knees, Orpheuz quickly withdrew his hands from where he had put them trying to hold Alyona down. Almost as if he realized he was being close to catching some disease, perhaps it were the gushing water being spit in his direction.

He wasn't worried about water. He knew that at least. Yet allowing her saliva-tainted water to land on him was not something he wanted. Even though he was well aware of that in order to purify, one would have to go through grime at times.

"I will be on my way. You best find some way to dry off. And cover yourself up, indecent thug." Orpheuz grunted in an irritated manner and slid his both hands into his pockets, before teleporting a distance away so that he was out of reach for the girl were she still considering to rob him. Then again. The thought struck him. What possibly did he carry that she could rob him off?

'Ahh.. I suppose that's true. I don't really have anything of material worth with me. Something to remember for the next time...' He threw glances over to the girl to make sure she wasn't a stalker, and also in case she would say anything else in that highly arrogant tone of hers. He definitely knew her type. The kind who say 'I hate you...' when they actually meant the opposite.

Alyona

Waste her gift, he said. Alyona wasn't sure if she should laugh or vomit at the boy's words - both would hurt about equally, given the beating she received. 'Let's swap places and see how well you'd use this "gift,"' she thought, gritting her teeth as he left her. He couldn't even walk away - he had to vanish as if the ground beneath his feet might not be good enough to support him. She let him leave without a word. Nothing she could say would really change what had happened, though she wondered why he chose the words he did as he left. Alyona chalked it up to a language barrier, even though she had a fairly strong grasp of the local tongue. There wasn't really any other explanation for why he'd call her "indecent."

Aly rested against the alley wall for a moment before shakily standing. It was another one of those days. She thought she had actually seen an upturn recently, but she supposed this was what she got for thinking positively. She didn't have a change of clothes, so she'd have to walk home like that. She had experienced worse. In fact, the dreadful ferry ride at the capital as a child had this beat by far - More water, by far.

She slowly paced to the edge of the alley, finding her bag. Walking was difficult, and her body ached with the trauma as well as the cold. She probably couldn't make it home like this. It was a thought that was an inconvenience, rather than an existential threat. Alyona knew very well that she could heal using her lances - not being able to make it home as is was a simple matter of finding something... or someone to drain. She had some ideas on that front.

"Despite everything, I guess I'll be fine." Alyona muttered to herself. It wasn't a statement of joy or pain, merely an observation of her state.

Alrune

Al didn't hide his broad smile as Lambda had praised him for being cool, it was an image which the boy could totally live with. In fact he had always wanted to be the cool guy. The sort of guy who could stare evil in the face and not tremble. He knew that his mouth just had this problem, where words would just sometimes get lost on the way out. It was almost like it had a life of it's own at times. He was certain. No. He was confident in his confidence. He had after all stepped up to defend a nice lady who had rewarded him for his just deed. It really did pay off being the good guy!

"Ahaha! I- no no! I am totally not that cool!" Al scatched the back of his neck in an awkward manner, as if he felt embarassed. Still it did make him feel in a good mood, especially when Lambda had so openly encouraged him to search for his dream of joining the school of the cool. At least that was what he heard it were, why would people make that up?

While Lambda seemed to be a hardworking scholarlike-garden person, Al wasn't overly fond of the idea of looking into books. It felt like a big problem, he would rather just play some of his music and sing. Fighting wasn't something he really wanted to do, but he knew he had to try learn to defend himself and his friends. If he could find some. Odd. Now when he thought about it, ever since he came to Rhea he had not made a single true friend. Sure there were the members of his band, they were a good bunch. And then there were his manager who had looked out for him and helped him getting everything set up. He had also been the one to find him after his blackout, while some nefarious person could have possibly tried to mug him or pull him into some criminal activities. His manager had helped him get a job and a place to stay. For that he was eternally grateful, even if he was so tired after many of the events.

But now after having been given all this money from the rich girl, he could finally take a break and make contact with his home to let them know about his luck and the amazing place that were Rhea. Ofcourse he felt that he should at least help his band find a new singer first and likely give the manager abit of the money for his help. He had somewhat drifted off from his conversation with Lambda, whereof he quickly shook his head and snapped back in focus.

"Oh sorry, I got lost in my thoughts there for a moment. I cannot say I know anything about gardening stuff or book stuff myself. But hey people are good at different stuff!" He said in an appologetic tone before glancing around as if he had insulted the very library itself.

"Uhm, I would have liked to talk more with you Lambda, but I should try get to my place before someone gets wind of what I was just gifted." He smiled warmly before offering a soft nod to Lambda and anyone else who happened to be in the vicinity.

"Take care allright? Maybe next time we meet I could tell you about how cool the Mephisto school is? Gonna be great!" He grinned in a friendly manner while offering a wave to Lambda, then began his way over towards the exit of the building, throwing a glance over his shoulder just before leaving to make sure none were following him. He had to protect his fortune now, it would save his entire family from poverty, not to mention himself. All the food he could buy. He felt a sudden urge to visit the market again, after all he was a growing boy. He had to eat.

'Time to try everything.' He tightened his hands into fists and made a cheering motion without saying a word, but his body language would display his feelings enough.

Wolf was paralyzed. Her words seemed to confirm what his subconscious had immediately realized. Wolf had imagined a day like this many times, imagined Alex waking up and what he'd say to her.

Those daydreams never got terribly far. He didn't feel he deserved happy dreams.

All he'd ever found himself left with were nightmares where she was gone forever. Even if she did wake up, why should he go anywhere near her? Wasn't this all his fault to begin with?

Now here she was out of nowhere. Was this a dream or a nightmare? Or, surreal as it felt, was this actually reality for once?

"I-" He thought to deny his identity, or apologize, but his gaze froze over her face. Since when... why? How? He pointed at her face. "You... have an eyepatch now?" His voice came out small and lost despite how he effectively towered over her.

Everything felt so out of place.

Alex wasn't expecting that to be Wolf's first question, though she had become so used to her eyepatch by now that she didn't really notice. Except for when she tried to catch things. She immediately looked down, awkwardly putting her hands together. "Um... Y-Yes, it's... Well... I've had to wear it since I woke up, since my eye..." Alex held back from talking about the details. She knew what she thought actually happened and the clinical definition had inconsistencies. Ones that she probably wouldn't want to discuss until later. "Its vision isn't really here anymore, I suppose?" She absentmindedly touched her eyepatch. "I-It looks a little cool, I think..." Alex did wholeheartedly believe that statement, at least.

She at last managed her nerves enough to get a steady glance at Wolf - he looked very conflicted, though Alex couldn't guess at which direction his heart was being tugged. If she had seen him like this before... everything that had happened, she would have rushed to comfort him without a second thought. But now, could she really? Would she have to close the distance over time?

Would he even want that anymore? Alex's breath caught in her throat at the thought, panic creeping into her mind.

Well, that was certainly one way to describe going blind in one eye. Then again, all things considered, maybe that really just was how it was. That was probably his fault too.

"Uh, yeah... it... suits you, somehow." He immediately clenched his jaw after speaking. If Alex liked it, he wanted to agree with her, but at the same time it felt so wrong. 'I know I hospitalized you and blinded you in one eye, but at least you look neat!' It made his stomach churn.

"Um, what are you doing here?" Had she come to see him? Why? Did... she not know? If she did, did she blame him?

Was he about to be sued?

Did Vera know?

He had a million questions. He wanted to ask when she woke up? Was it recent? Had she rushed out to find them? Or had it been a while ago, but then why was he only finding out now? Well, the latter would have made sense. Of course she'd avoid him... but then... that led back to the question he'd just asked.

Hajime and Duke

@Letter Bee

Just as Hajime stepped foot in the dorms, his phone began ringing. On the screen was an unknown phone number.
Hajime called back, already realizing that he was in trouble. He would not play dumb, saying, "Let me guess; this is about what happened just a few hours ago?"

"Looks like you have some self awareness at least." Duke's voice said from the receiver. He sighed in exasperation. "It hasn't even been a day and you're already involved in something big. By the way, would you mind moving somewhere quieter?"

Hajime nodded and said, "I'll go to the latrines - bathrooms. I'll lock myself in the nearest stall just in case someone wants to stab me or is tempted to do so."

And with that, he went to the nearest men's bathrooms, locked himself in an empty stall, then said to Duke, "I'm in the stall furthest to the left. We can talk now."

Another quiet sigh sounded from the receiver. It carried a tone of acceptance, as if he was just meeting the standard. In the background of the call, Hajime could hear what sounded like running water.

"So here I was, tracking down that Ikari kid, when I see a mech suit drop out of the sky with your voice coming out of it. That was you, right? Care to explain what went down?"

The response was, "Well, my... Patrons, the ones who provided me the mech, made contact with Ken's parents; they said that Ken, my liege, found a laboratory ran by corrupt elements in the Rhean Government... For the purpose of experimenting on 'Gifted' to eventually exterminate those who have Gifts."

He then relayed what the Nitta Clan had told him, which in turn they relayed from Ken's parents, and who had been told by Ken about Alrune, Dr. Plagarazes, and how Ken had killed him to try and stop the latter's plans... And how Ken might be facing charges of murder at best if he were caught.

"...You've got a real problem with oversharing, you know that?" Duke said, after a few moments of silence. "At least tell me you didn't show your face at the crime scene."

Hajime responded with, "I'm not that stupid; I was in my mech, which yes, I can keep hidden; don't ask how."

More silence. A few contemplative moments later, Duke spoke again.
"You know Hajime, by telling me all this information, it seems like you're trying to drag me into this. I'm not exactly against that, I guess. But is that what you want to do? Get strangers involved in your succession crisis?"

The reply came after a few seconds, "Definitely not the succession crisis; that's up to my liege. However, this conspiracy to eliminate all 'Gifted', well... You're a Gifted too, right? Surely you see the danger."

"...Sure, but I don't see how that's my problem. What, exactly, is stopping you from forwarding the information to the relevant authorities? They can't all be that fucking stupid."

The answer was instant this time, "Elements of the Rhean Civil Defense Force - Officers - are with them. We don't know how high the conspiracy reaches, or who is in it."

"Hajime, you're missing the point. Money and influence - if they have the force on their side, they have one or both. When you have money and influence, you have politics. Politics means different parties, all looking to tear each other to pieces at a moment's notice. All you have to do is find out who they are affiliated with, and give the info to the other guy. That guy will do all the work for you. They'll even thank you for it.

"If, and I mean if, it's possible to remove all gifted from the face of the earth, those old farts up the top are the first ones who'd want to stop it. Gifts are powerful, and power wants more power. If they know it's a threat, they'll deal with it how they always do - scrub so hard that no one will remember it. Why do you have to do anything about it?"

A few seconds of non-response, before Hajime said, "Oh."

Duke sighed again. "Look, I've got a good idea of what you're thinking. We're students, but that doesn't mean we can't do anything. We can get in places we're not supposed to because no one cares about us. The big boys can play their games and we can slip in right under their noses. You want to help out Ken because you or your buddies want him on the throne, and he won't stop until he gets to the bottom of this. Maybe you actually like the guy, maybe you don't. If he solves this, it'll make him look good. It makes his odds at the throne a lot better. A win win.

"But I'm not you. I don't particular like the guy. I don't care who's on Izumo's throne. And the way I see it, this'll get solved without us. I can help. I can make it go faster, for sure. But why should I? What do I get out of it? What are you putting on the table to trade with me?"

In the background, a rock splashes into the water. Perhaps a frustrated throw from Duke.
"This is what a business relationship is, Hajime. No one works for free."

Hajime took a few more seconds before he said, in a slightly less firm tone which sounded like he was holding something back, "I have backers; not all of them impoverished idealists. That mech that caused chaos? We built it; stole others too. But more importantly, we are able to build mechs. That has implications, correct? After all, even if you're not interested in fancy toys, you're interested in the cash which was going to be used to build more..."
The chips were down on the table. Now all that was left was to call or fold.

"I'm not that interested in cash. I am interested in those backers of yours, but I know not to stick my nose in other people's business, so let's talk about it later." Duke said. "You've already met Mr. Ikari, but are you still interested in his information?"

The response was instant, "Yes, yes I am. And I know full well my liege has shortcomings; what would you ask in exchange for telling me how deep they are?"

"That kind of information will take time. With you directly meeting him, you're better of trying to figure that out for yourself." He said.

After a brief pause Hajime's phone lit up with a text. On it was Ken's current address, his phone number, and some small tidbits of information. Some were fairly easy to find, such as the bounty he had just completed, while others could have only been found out with insider information. None of it was very important, though. Information on his school subject, what time he enrolled, among other things.

"Let's do it this way. If you want me to get more dirt on Ken, trade me information on his friends - a long haired guy and some girl. They beat up Nightman together and went somewhere else later. Details are spotty. As for the conspiracy, ask your backers first. I doubt they'd have too much to spare for this."

No hesitation in this response too, "If I can get it, I can get it. I'll also try and meet with Ken myself; maybe he'll tell me about his friends too..."

He could almost imagine Duke nodding.
"It's a deal. If I find something worth talking about, you'll get a letter under the door. Don't call this number back."
With that, there was a woosh and the clear sound of water splashing. The sound crackled before going completely dead. He had thrown the phone into the river.

Hajime sighed as he checked his phone for malware and trojans; it was going to be a good, long, sojourn in Rhea...

Alex scratched her cheek sheepishly, giving a nervous laugh at Wolf's awkward compliment. "Ehehe... Thanks." It did make her feel better, despite the strange atmosphere between them.

The question he asked was one she expected, though she couldn't quite read what the feeling was behind it. While it didn't sound hopeful... It wasn't really hostile either. She quickly blurted it out, before Wolf even had a chance to react. "I was looking for you!! I-It's been a long time and I spent months in the hospital and... I-" Alex's voice caught in her throat before she could finish her sentence.

She sniffled, thinking back to what happened earlier with Vera. "I just needed some time... Please don't be mad..." She felt like she messed it up already, but it was too late now. She braced herself.

Wolf was honestly taken aback by Alex's behavior. He couldn't believe what she was saying.

"Why... are you apologizing? It's-" My fault. "-not your fault, right?" He was surprised she hadn't wanted forever away from him, honestly. "U-um, well, you found me..."

It was so painfully awkward. He didn't want to bring up the guilt he felt if that wasn't what she wanted to talk about. There was no need to burden her with that... but why had she come looking for him? Did she really not resent him?

What did she think happened?

"Are, uh, are you OK now?" You know, aside from being short one eye...
