Rain preened when the mighty giant called her a “great hero”. It made her ember crackle in her chest, but not in the usual, painful way, more how thunder and lightning could set your skin prickling. She didn’t much want to go out and tear things apart anymore—well, she did, but not as much, not right now. Instead, she wanted to stay put, and try ‘beer’, and watch Quinnlash and granny beat the teeth out of each other until it stopped being funny.

Pink and blue introduced themselves though, and it only confused Rain even more. Quinnlash, Lexann, Trantascilia. None of these were words, she was certain of it. ‘Stormbrew’ at least had it partly right, but fucked if she any idea what a Loughvein or a ‘Kimna…Kimmython…’ a whatever that was, was. And those were their chosen names, too! She could tell, ‘cause there wasn’t a single number in any of them. So they’d just…what—made them up? Could you do that? Was that allowed? But you couldn’t like something made up.

Oh well, if nothing else, it reminded her not to introduce herself by her old name. She’d done that on accident on her way to Uglydein, and gotten weird looks, like they all knew she’d left that name behind.

Rain on My Skin, Ice in My Mouth,” she said, climbing onto one of the chairs by the table, so she could shake Lexann’s hand before it was pulled away from Tranta. She could quite get her fingers around it, even with her claws, so she settled for just patting the woman’s massive hand. “Best, most awesome Hunter in Scila, and probably Assyl, too, but I haven’t seen it all yet so I still gotta make sure.

She hopped back down again, teeth rattling in her pockets. A few spilled out to clatter on the ground, but she left them to pick up later. “Hey,” she said, looking back up to Tranta. “You said we gotta wait for Galeel, that’s the big pyromancer, right?” her lips pulled into a sharp, disgusted frown. “He’s not gonna hang out with us, is he? He’s kinda really old. And gross.

“Hm?”

Trantascilia released Lexann’s grip as she looked to the tiny hunter who introduced herself as, well, a sentence. She had heard the stories of melters crafting their own identities, but the process outside of it involving young pyromancers was something she didn’t really know much about despite Prentis’ ties to the Scilari. She smiled wearily as the tiny hunter asked her questions about the master pyromancer and if he intended to ‘hang out’ with the group at large.

Given Galiel’s disposition, that seemed to be unlikely.

“Yes, he's the one in charge. He will tell us what he needs us to do before we go on our way, Rain.” She explained, “I wouldn’t worry about him talking with us for long.”

"So needy."

Quinnlash's teeth grit together and her offhand clenched into a tight, vicious claw. Then she slammed Undying Light into the stones barrel first with a loud crack, echoed in rapid time by the same from her metaphysical center as the golden flash seared across her chest. Her ember, already a lump of molten steel within her chest, redoubled itself with the familiar white-hot sear that had poured through her veins so many times now. The newborn soulfire within her cannon began to swell with a terrible light, and she growled along with it as her blood began to boil. She faintly heard the other Hunters introduce themselves, and somewhere within her their names registered, but fuck them, she had other things to worry about right now.

"Quinnlash! Quinn! Lash! My name is Quinnlash, maker damn you, and you know it!" Her voice grated like steel on stone as she kicked the massive gun to her shoulder with a practiced twirl and leveled it at Fianna's face, teeth bared in a furious snarl. A moment of quiet passed. The pained grimace turned to a fierce and jagged smile.

"But you know what? If it's a fight that you're offering, then step right up and I'll blow you in half just like last time!"

Time froze for just a moment there as her finger tightened, trembling, on the trigger. It would be just so maker-damned easy to blast her right in her stupid arrogant face. It wouldn't even slow the woman down in the end, she'd just put herself back together like she always had, so what was the damn harm anyway? It's not like she cared about anything anyone in the shit backwater city had to say, right?

I’m sure the Pyromancer-Queen would be disappointed if she heard you talking to me like this.

With a barely suppressed scream of frustration, Quinnlash tore her finger from the trigger. Her eye flashed with a brilliant golden light as the soulfire winked out and rejoined the rest of her soul, and she slung the cannon across her shoulder. Her voice, when she spoke, was husky with anger and pain, and some other emotion buried deep down in there that even she couldn't quite identify, and certainly didn't want to. She forced her boiling blood to still some. "Next time I'll burn you down until there aren't even ashes left. Even you wouldn't be able to put yourself together after that, Freakshow." But the energetic fury had gone, and she was going through the motions for her own sake more than anything else.

She turned away to the Hearthfire tower, unable to even look at the smug expression that was no doubt slithering over the woman's face right now. And unconsciously, her own face was twisted into something that struck between anger and anguish and fear.

"Galiel will be down soon anyway. Wouldn't be any fun."

Lexann blinked at the small hunter, confused again. "Is that a poem?" she asked. Poems weren't really something she often got to hear or understand, but Rain's introduction sounded something like one might. She shrugged, letting her complain about Galeel. Lexann for one was excited to talk to him now that only a handful of hunters made it out of the battle. She couldn't help but look up to pyromancers, in awe of the power they possessed. Her eyes wandered to the ceiling, suddenly thrown into a daydream of her throwing fire from her fingertips and destroying all of the void in her way. Then her smile disappeared.

"Why don't pyromancers just burn the void up and call it a decade?" she asked to no one in particular. "It's gotta be easier than whacking them with the handful of forbidden weapons we have."

Rain was relieved to hear that the Uglydein ghoul wouldn’t be tailing them. She’d only just met cool people, and the last thing she wanted was to drag some grandpa around while they all drank beer and punched each other. They’d get in trouble for punching pyromancers—the folks back home had made sure she knew that. Other hunters? Fair game. Normal people? Maybe don’t, it’s boring anyway. But pyromancers? Off-limits, even papa had said so.

Thinking about him made her stomach feel funny. Made her want to punch Galiel anyway just to do it.

Stupid. Cut it out. You’re mad at him.

Lexann—still not a real word but whatever, they could come up with definition later—asked if Rain’s name was a poem. Ah, the pink giant was a little slow, it seemed. Well, that made sense; you couldn’t have so much muscle and have brains, too.

No, it’s water,” Rain said, correcting her.

No harm done; she didn’t like the woman any less for being a bit dumb. In fact, she preferred dumb people. Dumb people were fun. Nerds on the other hand, like Galiel and the other pyromancers, made her want to bite things.

Besides, Lex brought up a good point then: why didn’t the pyromancers just blast the void’s ass and be done with it? The obvious answer was that they were lame little wusses with weak gums who were afraid of death, unlike Rain, who had an iron jaw and wasn’t afraid of anything, even a little bit. The better answer was that if they did do that, then none of the hunters would get to have any fun.

Because this is cooler,” she offered. “Like, way cooler.

As usual, it was easy. Almost too easy, in fact. Getting the one-eyed zealot riled up had become such an effortless task that there almost wasn't even any fun in it anymore. Just like fighting her, really. She'd received the other hunter's flames almost too many times to count -- weathered the storm and been broken down to dust, then stuck herself back together again and kept going. She'd ripped the haughty woman limb from limb and relished the taste of soot as her fingers snapped and her organs ruptured and her bones turned to ash inside her insatiable gullet. She'd lost. She'd won. She'd stopped caring.

Ah, maybe it would have been better to push a little more -- take the one-eyed fool up on her offer and see if she could actually kill her in a way that mattered. But then she looked down to the blade already peeking its way between the seams of her flesh, and breathed an almost imperceptible sigh.

The flower.

That damned flower.

Everything else faded away, but it seemed there was still one thing she couldn't seem to forget. That must have been its doing, too.

"You're welcome to try," Was all she mumbled in reply, giving an absentminded shrug as her would-be murderer turned away in shame. Her voice carried with it naught but resignation -- as, once her adversary's heart was no longer in it, so too did Fianna lose the will to continue provoking her in earnest. If she couldn't kill and she couldn't die, what else was there for her to even do, exactly?

...Bide her time, and wait until she was let off her leash again, she supposed.

“They tried to do that at the beginning. Before we had hunters.”

Trantascilia had remembered the stories. She was but a child during that brief period where the pyromancers were the sword and the shield, the moment where hunters didn’t really exist. When a hunter did come, she had been alone and for years the void consumed the entire Empire of Aulrithia with needless abandon. It was because of that there was so much void coming upon the rest of the world because places like Midnos allowed Aulrithia and the free nations beside her to get swallowed while they worked tirelessly to create new solutions.

A terrible time.

“A great misfortune is that despite their abilities, they can not do it. Which is why we need to work together, unified by our goal to drive out the darkness.” She smiled, turning to the small child hunter who had survived. “It is very inspiring of awe. Coolness of the greatest kind.”

Quinnlash, by force of long, long habit, was snapped out of her distraction by a question about pyromancy. Which was not exactly her favorite subject; it reminded her far too much of things she'd left behind. But still, something—maybe her massive venting of pyromancy in the hearthfire keep, the memories that had been gnawing on her mind, or Galiel's last few words getting under her skin—compelled her to answer. So she glanced back at the pink Hunter. Lexann, she thought, as she locked eyes—or, well, eye—with her. Her mouth was fixed into a scornful sneer, as it often was. But when she spoke, her voice, on the other hand, was most unlike her. It carried none of the loud, angry vitriol that characterized "Quinnlash" so much of the time. Rather, it was quiet, level, and deeply bitter.

"Pyromancy has more limits than you think."

She stared up at the dark, clouded sky, and a small, tightly-controlled flame leapt between her fingers. "There's only so much energy in one person. Humans are finite, by definition; the Void is infinite. And finite versus infinite reaches a predictable, inevitable outcome. Which is why we exist. We—Hunters—we're still finite in theory if not normal praxis. Just...less so. So the conclusion is less clear-cut and obvious."

For the barest fraction of a fraction of a second, her face was writ with something like despair.

Then her hand snapped closed, and the flame vanished with it. Her brow creased into a thundercloud, and she mantled a scowl once again. Stop it. Stop it! FUCKING STOP IT! You aren't like that anymore! You are better!

"Ugh! Fuck! Why am I even talking about—telling you about—FUCK! It's not like dumbasses like you can understand it anyway, so why am I even BOTHERING?"

Naturally, Lexann nodded along with Rain. Hunters were way cooler, as demonstrated on the battlefield while the other pyromancers gathered around the hearth. A different purpose, sure, but not as cool. And with Tranta, she had to nod along again. Hunters were strong, but it's what they accomplished together that ultimately drove back the void. And a simple pyromancer wouldn't last very long, Lexann supposed. One mistake would lead to the end-end. Her eyes flickered to the tall, white haired hunter. Rivaling cats in number of lives, hunters were the ultimate soldier--popping right back up after being squashed.

"Pyromancy has more limits than you think."

Again, Lexann nodded as the eye patch'd hunter talked...until the words got a little too polysyllabic and the bob of her head slowed to watch her in confusion-- To see that she was playing with a flame between fingers. Big words, big booms, literally playing with fire?

"Whoa, wait-- were you a pyromancer?" she asked, wonderment in her voice. "And now you're a hunter? Haven't met anyone like that yet-- Who are you?"

"Who are you?"

Who are you?

Yeah, Quinnlash. Who are you?

Quinnlash clenched her teeth and held back a snarl, settling instead for a voice like a guttural growl as she whirled on Lexann. Her eye was full of fire, as the last of the fragments merged back into her and her soul sealed itself back together again. "I told you already, I'm QUINNLASH LOUGHVEIN. Yes, I'm a hunter, and yes, I'm a maker-damned pyromancer! I'm coming out of Midnos, the fuck'd you expect?"

She huffed in a long, harsh breath. "But who gives a fuck about that? I'm not one of the worthless fucking jokes that usually comes off the Hunter table in my country." She flicked the braid behind herself, resettling it against her back as she kept glaring and leaned against her colossal cannon again. "I don't fucking need pyromancy to take care of this shit."
