Most "futuristic" technologies you'd see in movies and such, things like nanotech, artificial intelligence, light-speed travel, artificial gravity, etc do exist. If you're still not sure about a specific example, just ask.

I'm going to pretend I didn't spend my lunch hours at College today, recreating my characters history into a short novel lmost three thousand or so letters wrong, and I'm just going to scrap this character and come up with something else. And I apologise for dragging out my characters creation for this long. I haven't put this much effort into making a character in a while.

As for the fact as Faster-than-Light travel exists, I would go as far as to assume that the reason people haven't colonised other planets, is it still takes years upon years to get somewhere? Taking a few years for a message to go one-way, and then the same amount of time for a reply is very counter-productive to long term survival.

Pretty much that. It technically takes about 8 minutes for light to travel from the Sun to Earth so you can use that to gauge how fast it takes to travel between each planet by light-travel. Although, I'd think this method of travel is restricted to those who are extremely wealthy only so you won't have the JFA light-traveling right to Earth for an invasion, etc.
