Karina Frost

Even though Karina thought her warning would be enough to dissuade anyone from trying either to get drunk or to do anything 'reckless' while under the influence of the divergence, she would find herself to be very extremely wrong when the first fistful of mashed potatoes flew through the air, thrown by Sil after Akai said that someone should try to 'liven-up' things a little.

Týfurkh, who was the one Sil had aimed at first despite having missed, also seemed to have some plans of his own to 'liven-up' the dinner, as he turned towards Sil, standing up and going after her, provoking her as he said he would use her as food instead of the roast.

Even Akai was caught by surprise by Sil's sudden action and how Týfurkh reacted to it, causing her to start laughing almost uncontrollably as Chres and soon after, Tayla got hit with mashed potatoes, which in return caused Karina to look at her with an irritated glare. Fortunately for Akai, whatever was going on at the moment wasn't her fault and Karina knew that, which was probably the reason why she didn't say anything to Akai and instead simply gave her an irritated look of disapproval.

"Chres you really shouldn't-" Karina tried saying as she saw Chres pouring a glass of wine. Unfortunately, Sil's little stunt seemed to have helped Chres to decide that it was better risk being drunk than having to deal with all that while sober.

"At least you know how to deal with Sil..." Karina said, sighing as Chres somehow was able to make Sil stop throwing food.

"Now we know why he likes to drink so much, don't we?" Akai said, still laughing.

"I get the feeling I should still scold you, even though you technically had no fault at what happened..." Karina said, looking to Akai with a disapproving stare before turning to Chres.

"I'm starting to understand why you drink now, Chres... Just be careful to not have too much." Karina said sighing as she waited for the servants to serve them.

Tayla wasn't the only one who noticed the... strange state the food was... The moment Karina began eating, she couldn't help but to notice it was far from what she had imagined the food from a lord's manor would be. In fact, it was almost as bad as the food served from cheap, roadside inns.

"It's certainly... unique..." Karina said, discreetly coughing after eating a piece of the roast, getting caught by surprise due to the amount of pepper and spices.

"But we still should eat at least something. Lest we find ourselves hungry and without energy to fight when we have to." Karina said, forcing herself to eat a bit more.

Jen hadn’t bothered to wash; his clothing was far dirtier than the others and he had no extra pair. Washing only to use these rags would be a pointless affair, and so he didn’t. Perhaps there was a complimentary change of clothes provided mentioned by one of the servants, but he couldn’t recall it. He’d mosey on over to the dining room to meet the others. Just then, Sil would fling some mashed potatoes at him and as if on reflex, Jen would catch the errant food in his mouth. He’d watch Sil make a mess and make a disappointed look as he swallowed the potatoes. It was wrong, all wrong!

He knew that other nations and their cuisine weren’t as developed as his home nation, but this was dire. Making some half-decent mashed potatoes wasn’t that hard, but somehow this succeeded in failing an easy task. They were lumpy, but not in a good way, absolutely bland, and a little watery. He’d look at the others and their reactions to the food. It seemed nobody was enjoying the meal. He’d take a piece of the unimpressive-looking roast, and tasting it only confirmed just how bad it was.

“Sense and seasonings… I know your cuisine lacks compared to ours, but this is awful.” He’d say aloud. He was already half-annoyed by just being in this place, but this food was apparently the last straw. As a proud member of the Nation of Taste, this food insulted him. It was perhaps one of the few instances the others would see him become both visibly irritated and impassioned. “You there,” he said looking at the servant, “Show me where the kitchen is; I want to tell the chef what I’m going to tell you. This food wastes and dishonors the ingredients. Not just the animals who took time to rear and whose lives were sacrificed, but also the vegetables that took months to tend and grow. Now show me the kitchen or I’ll find it myself. Either way, I’m going to make a replacement dinner to cover up for this travesty, and maybe your chef might learn a thing or five.”

Having said that he’d pick up the bowl of mashed potatoes. “And I’ll be taking this. I doubt anything else in this banquet could be saved. When I return at least the potatoes will be worth eating.” Servant be damned, this dinner was trash, and he was already set to do better. The first order would be to touch up the potatoes, and then figure out what the hell to throw together for a quick enough dinner.

Interactions with @jerkchicken

The servant opened her mouth but then hesitated, holding her tongue with trepidation. A male servant quickly intervened, placing a reassuring hand on the woman's shoulder as if to excuse her.

"Just a moment, Sir," he said with a bow. He whisked the younger woman away, their hurried whispers echoing briefly, and then the male servant promptly left the room.

Tayla's face contorted into a bewildered expression as she observed the strange behavior of the servants.

Freaking weirdos. she thought.

She glanced back at the older servant who had been staring at them earlier. Now, the woman's gaze was fixed directly on Tayla.

Tayla shot the woman a piercing look, her eyes narrowing, and her lips curling into a subtle yet sardonic 'What?!' as their eyes met.

The lady continued to unabashedly stare for a moment longer before finally turning away and leaving the room.

As all of this unfolded, Chres frowned, his fingers drumming impatiently. He turned to Jen, raising an eyebrow. "You can cook?" He asked, genuinely surprised.

The young female servant, who had greeted them when they entered the manor, returned. Her lips barely hinted at a frown as she took in Jen's dirtied attire.

"Esteemed guest," she said to Jen with a slight curtsy and a smile that appeared almost forced. "The kitchens are this way. Follow me."

She turned and led the way without waiting for Jen to follow. They entered an empty kitchen with several dirty pans and dishes scattered about.

"Our chef has excused himself for the night. But please, help yourself."

The woman left without offering any further pleasantries, striding purposefully to attend to her other duties.

Tayla had observed the entire exchange, her head shaking in silent disbelief. At this point, the woman's curt behavior seemed intentional. Senses! What was wrong with this place?

Well, at least they were about to have better food—hopefully. But then again...

Tayla considered Jen's dirtied attire and hands that appeared not to have been washed in months.

She felt conflicted for a moment. Do I simply eat the terrible food, or do I risk the unsanitary food? she pondered.

Her hand made for the food on her plate, but then she hesitated.

No. This agony isn't worth it, she decided. Perhaps, it would be best if I pretended that Jen is going to wash his hands.

She pushed her plate aside in resignation, letting out a sigh as she waited for Jen's return.

Sil
Lynx
Karina
Chres

Sometime after dinner, Sil found herself zipping throughout the corridors of the mansion.

“Oh dear! Oh dear! This is bad, bad, bad, bad, bad!”

Sil was in a panic zipping in and out of rooms and corridors through the Manor.

“Where is he?! Where is he?!” She worried aloud, “It's an emergency!”

The emergency had happened over dinner. When Týfurkh and Tayla shared a glance. Karina and Tayla though, they didn’t lock eyes even once!

As amazing as a fighter that Karina was, the woman unfortunately appeared to know nothing about the battleground of love. Fortunately for her, however, Sil was here to save the day! … then again, she would be just as soon as she found-

“Lyyyyyyyyyyyynx! Where are you?!?!”

Sil zoomed under a nearby cupboard in the room she was currently searching, but alas, there was no Lynx to be found.

“Damn it Lynx! Now’s not the time to be playing hide-n-seek! It’s Karina, Lynx! We have to help her before it’s too-” -Sil turned a corner and flew smack into Lynx- “-Ooof!” -Ah there he is.

He took the blow and rolled with it, one misstep away from not recovering appropriately. The life of what he considered to be a vagabond led to having to avoid every sort of hit, but Sil was different. The air of general idiocy that surrounded her was a fog of war for the mentally stable. She at least fit the environment. The entire manor was full of chaotic oddities.

”You have astonished me. I sense any and all scolding on my end would not be very effective. It is good to have met another person however. I was actually seeking to hone my conversational skills to better suit contemporary contexts.” His short tail flickered.

“Ahem. Does the curtain match the drapes?”

A nearby cleaning woman’s back stiffened at Lynx’s words. Her drapes were most certainly dyed.

Sil, however, cocked her head as if to say- ‘what?’. She then turned around to examine the nearby drapes. Noooo… they didn’t match the- Ooooh!

Sil’s eyes lit up as she suddenly recognized the code that Tayla had recently taught Lynx. What was she supposed to do again? Oh, right!

Approaching Lynx, she gave the familiar a smile and friendly pat on the cheek. “No, Lynx, they do not match, but thanks for asking.”

The cleaning woman gave the two an odd look, before realizing that she was staring and promptly returned to her task.

Lynx caught a glimpse of the woman staring and his shoulders rose. This was the forefront of socialization, the turning of a new page for him. He nonchalantly continued the flow of conversation between him and his non-standard companion.

“Excellent. What help does Karina need?” A pause. “Did she ask for us specifically?”

Karina seemed a better conversational partner to sharpen his skills with. Her serious demeanor was adjacent to his, but she proved to be a person capable of having her softer moments. She definitely wouldn’t mind drape-related colloquialisms or the help of two familiars instead of one.

Sil blinked. “Icy-rina, ask for help?” Sil sighed, waving away Lynx’s blindness. “Lynx, you and I both know Icy-rina is too proud to ask for help.”

Silly Lynx, sometimes he was truly ignorant.

“And that’s her problem, Lynx! She’s too proud to admit when she’s vulnerable and inexperienced. Especially, when it comes to the art of love.”

Surprise… help. The momentum of his thoughts began to slow. “The art of love,” he repeated. He knew Sil was the mischievous sort, but this was a completely unknown field to him. She really could have some insight that would benefit the sterner members of the group.

“I had always assumed familiars were unable to feel true love. All our physical limitations psychosomatically tint our feelings and ultimately limit them. Where were you taught this information?”

“Where? Silly Lynx.” Sil fluttered close to Lynx. “When we first met… Love at first sight.” Sil said, batting her eyes.

She zipped away and twirled in the air. “When Chres and I first met? Love at first sight!”

She flew over to a nearby decorative suit of armor. “When Little Pecker and I first met-” Sil stopped short, suddenly disgusted with herself. “No, Sil, No! Not Little Pecker!” What was she thinking?! Little Pecker was the enemy here!

Sil shook her head. “But that’s how love works, Lynx. You meet someone and whoosh- PUDDLE!” She slammed her fist into her open palm to emphasize the word ‘puddle’, “-and just like that you fall in love.”

Sil sighed, swooning at the thought of it all.

He was not unaware of the romance genre and its prevalence in libraries, but those sorts of books were his least favorite. Strange descriptions of human beings continuing their species, crude comparisons between common objects and body parts-

Oh.

“It would be best for us to stay away from any more of those curtain phrases for now however.” He held off the urge to scold. There was knowledge at stake.

Sil, waved at Lynx dismissively, “Oh silly, silly Lynx. We’ve already done the meet and greet. -but in any case, Lynx, but there’s a love triangle going on between Icy-rina, Tay-Tay-la and Little Pecks.” Sil mimicked the hand gesture Tayla had made when she mentioned the name ‘Little Pecks’.

“Karina, you see she’s a Dominationerix and demands submission from those she wants to have intimate-sions with. Karina, and Tayla have had eyes for each other from the start… but then… Little Pecker full of jealousy jumped in. And if we don’t stop him soon, he’ll ruin everything!”

”We are not assassinating him are we?”

He tried to calm himself by imagining someone as cheery as her carrying out a murder. It actually made perfect sense, so it made his mood worsen. We must limit ourselves to dissolving this tension. Not only from your reasoning and explanations of… domination, his teeth bared oddly during the pause, but because unrequited romantic feelings could lead to graver problems if we are to all cooperate.

It was starting to feel like reconnaissance. The comfort of background observation seeped in his fur. He wasn’t oblivious, he knew of her checkered past when it came to pranking. He would take her ideas and refine them, he decided. This party’s momentum would march forward.

“Assassinate?!?! What???? No!” Sil exclaimed aghast.

“Don’t you know anything about love, Lynx? Assassination is a last resort only! Opposing suitors don’t usually go around assassinating each other, silly. No, No. The proper way to dispose of your competition is through a fight to the death! Don’t you know? A duel is the grandest of romantic gestures!”

Sil sighed as she stared off in the distance into la-la land. Where tiny winged Chres’s cooed softly in the night and an eight armed Octavapoo strummed his harp to a romantic tune. All the while, Little Pecks and Icy-rina traded blows and red puddles for Tayla’s hand in the moonlight.

Sil blinked and shook her head. Now was not the time for fantasizing!

“Here’s what we need to do.” Sil said as she crept in close and whispered secretly into Lynx’s ear.

It was getting late into the night. When the trap was set just outside the door to privy of Little Pecker’s room. The trap, a bucket of water, was full to the brim and was set to dump its contents on top of Little Pecker the moment he opened the door.

The plan was simple. The moment the trap was sprung they would call in Tayla to witness the humiliation. It was an act of sabotage! If they could just convince Tayla that Little Pecks was beneath her, then a duel to the death would be unnecessary. Otherwise, they would have to pin the blame on Icy-rina. At the very least, they instigate the two into a proper duel.

“Any minute now.” Sil whispered aloud from under the bed. “Aaaaaaaaaaaany minute now.”

After such an... 'eventful' dinner, Karina was honestly exhausted. While she didn't want to be overly rude or disrespectful, she did notice that unlike Lord Ru'Tev, the servants didn't offer them the same... hospitality, with quite a few of them even thinking of them as nuisances.

Regardless, she was ready to lay down and hopefully rest a bit.

"You saw that servant's face when we were getting out? She totally would kill us if she could!" Akai said with a smirk and a chuckle as she mentioned the expression of one of the servants as they passed by on their way to her room.

"I guess explaining that I had nothing to do with the antics of the rest of our group wouldn't work after all that, would it?" Karina asked, with a heavy sigh.

"Nope. Part of the group, part of the problem. She totally sees us, you included, as total nuisances!" Akai said, putting her hands on her hip, almost as if proud of that.

The very second Karina opened the door though, she was greeted by a very unpleasant surprise as a bucket filled with water fell on top of her head, hanging over almost like a helmet as she stood there, completely soaked.

Even Akai, who usually laughed at such things managed to hold her laughter, instead just giving a step back, almost as if getting away from a bomb that was about to explode.

"What... is this!?" Karina asked, throwing the bucket to the ground as she stood still, shocked and soaked to the bone. Strangely enough, instead of the icy-cold blizzard that would normally follow Karina losing her temper, the most that happened was a chill air at most, which fortunately for Karina herself, only made her feel colder instead of forming a layer of ice around her that would surely make her dangerously cold.

Luckily for Sil, neither Karina nor Akai seemed to notice her hiding under the bed, which probably saved her from a very stern and harsh scolding from Karina.

"Before you say anything, I want to assure you I'm innocent this time. There is a saying about things like this, you know? 'Don't bite the hand that feeds you.'" Akai said, straightening up her expression as best as she could to avoid Karina noticing she was laughing.

"When I figure out whoever did this..." Karina said, grumbling as she went straight to the bathroom in order to dry herself and find a way to warm herself up.

Sil’s mouth dropped horrified. Everything had gone horribly wrong! This was supposed to be Little Peck’s room… or had that been three rooms to the right?!?!

Sil, shook her head. Plan A had failed, which meant it was time to find a way to pin the blame on Little Pecks. So be it, a battle to the death it was!

She zipped out from under the bed ready to go straight to Karina… Probably not the best of ideas right now, all things considered. Fortunately for her, though, Chres plucked her from the air before she could cause any further trouble.

”Do I want to know why you were hiding under the bed and why there is a giant puddle in the middle of our room?”

“Uuuuuuummmm… Yes?”

Chres narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

“No then?” Sil corrected herself.

Chres sighed. ”Let’s pretend this never happened. You might live another day if you do.” He said to Sil.

Chres

Late into the night, Chres found himself sitting alone staring into the fire of the guest wing’s foyer. There he waited. Princess Lys had not returned yet. The thought made him want to drink, but he stayed his hand, trying to to keep his promise.

Silence loomed about Chres, interrupted by the occasional servant tending to the fire. He’d asked them a few times about the princess. They looked at him as if he were an oddity. And indeed he was. Afterall the night was growing late.

”She hasn’t returned?” One of them had replied. “I’ll be sure to inquire the master, assuming he is still awake. If I had to guess though, he probably offered her the VIP suite.

Chres nodded. That should be that then. Was there really any need for him to stay out here any longer? Would it not be better to resign himself to sleep?

Another hour passed with the occasional servant wandering in and out. They all seemed to eye Chres as an annoyance. As if his presence was somehow interfering with their current work. Eventually it became too much to bear.

Chres stood up from his current resting spot. But instead of heading to his room, Chres found himself exiting the guest wing entirely.

As he left, he nodded farewell to the current servant in the foyer. The servant nodded back silently. Watching Chres leave with a sort of hunger.

Unfortunately, Chres found that he wasn’t able to get the tranquility he had hoped for in the halls of the darkened mansion. Servants brustled in and out of the mansion’s corridors even there, despite the late hour. Chres couldn’t help but frown, wondering to himself if they ever slept.

Eventually, he decided to ignore the looks they gave him. Tuning them out and focusing on his internal thoughts. Namely a question from Tayla which she had asked him earlier that day.

Why was he here?

The Being had stolen Chres’s life from him. Nothing would be left of him after he died. The world would not remember him. Except… except for…

"-your fellow pactmakers-” Those had been the words spoken by the being.

And now, after everything, where was this being now? For weeks they had heard nothing from him! Forgotten and pushed aside despite everything the Being had put them through!

"Aside from your fellow pactmakers, the world will not remember you... Any of you... Unspoken... forever more..."

Unspoken. Forgotten. Aside from his fellow pactmakers. There would never be anyone else in Chres’s life anymore. Only the pactmakers. So if anyone would remember him after he died, it would be them.

Chres found his hands trembling in the form of a fist. His knuckles white as bone. With effort, he unclenched his hands and calmed himself.

It was too soon for such thoughts. He still didn’t know what his dead wife meant when she told him he didn’t understand. The only problem, just where did he start?

Exhaling, Chres turned around the way he came only to find himself face to face with a servant who he had not realized was there.

Chres blinked in surprise, but then bowed his head in apology. ”Excuse me.” He muttered.

He made to move around the servant, but the same servant cut him off.

“You have wandered quite far from the guest wing at so late an hour.” The servant said.

Frowning, Chres met the servant’s gaze. ”Sorry.” He muttered. ”I was on my way back right now.”

Again he made to maneuver around the servant. Again, the servant cut him off.

“Actually, I think we prefer things this way.”

Immediately, Chres found himself on high alert, as he heard the rustling of two more servants behind him.

The servant in front of Chres smiled, “We tried to keep you away, but you Norms persisted.” He reached into his clothes and pulled out a dagger. “On the upside though, you did give us a princess.”

Chres reached for his magical reserves. Found them. Attempt to shape them into a blade, and… Nothing happened… His reserves stayed where they were. Stored away in his clothing.

Panic filled Chres. His magic wasn’t working! He could still feel things but his magic wasn’t working!

The servant lunged forward. Chres reacted on instinct, dashing to the side, catching the man’s wrist and then pushing the man forward to throw him off balance.

With a shout, the man cried out, as Chres pulled the man’s arm backwards and twisted the wrist, disarming the man.

Catching the dagger in his free hand, Chres then kicked the man into the other servants that had previously been behind him.

Surprised, the servants threw up their hands and caught their comrade. Chres took advantage of the chaos and made a mad run back the way he came. To the guest wing. Behind him, the guards yell after him.

Sil! He thought through his mental link to his familiar. We’ve been had. My magic’s not working and the servants just tried to kill me!

Oh, that’s nice! Sil thought back happily. But if you don’t mind, I’m kinda busy right now watching Tayla sleep. Did you know she puddles from her mouth?!

Sil! Now is not the time! They have Lys! Warn the others before-

Another servant appeared before Chres. Thinking quickly, Chres pulled out a throwing knife. Aimed and…

Chres’s foot landed on a bit of rug that inexplicably tore away from the rest of the rug. He slipped on the bit of loose rug. Loosing his footing, he fell to the ground with a thud.

The man smiled. “Not easy fighting in the Divergent, is it?” He said, while spitting on the floor and raising his hand. The spit began to warp and change, transforming into a blazing beast.

“Fortunately for us.” The man continued. “Our magic works.”

Nia

Nia lay sprawled across the bed in her room sinking blissfully into the soft blankets. For just a moment she allowed herself to dream of a life in which this was normal. Warmth, comfort and all the wonderful food and drink she could imagine.

‘Is this how other people lived?’ she thought to herself sleepily‘No fighting, no fears, just peace and quiet’

She savored the moment, clung to it like one might a life preserver in a stormy ocean. Maybe if she believed hard enough her worn and broken mind would make it a reality?

A curt, intrusive and all too familiar knock at the door shattered any hope she had and cast her unceremoniously back to reality. A lingering hope remained that perhaps this was simply her own mind deceiving her but no, a moment later the knock came again followed by a raised and irritated voice.

“Nia? Nia, are you in there? Open this door right now”

Nia opened her eyes and was greeted by the black fabric of the blindfold. She eased her fingers beneath and slipped it up, wearing it instead like a headband. She crossed the room to the door and with a soft click removed the latch keeping it locked.
Immediately the door was forcefully flung open from without, narrowly missing her face as she flinched back. A figure dressed in the garb of a manor servant strode in. The hawk-like face and piercing eyes of her aunt locked onto Nia causing her to recoil further.

“Enjoying a rest, were you?” she asked, the accusation clear in her voice.

The tone cut Nia where she stood and she quickly shook her head.

“No!” she took a breath and tried to calm herself “I mean, I-”

“Don’t lie girl, I can see it in your eyes. I had to knock five times before you even bothered to open the door! Lazy! Lazy you are! I’m out there working hard cooking, cleaning, doing the jobs I’m given while you simply lie in bed”

Nia raised a palm to her temple. Had Milaine knocked five times? She swore it had been the once but.. She raised her gaze to meet her aunts and quickly pulled the blindfold down over her eyes with a wince.

“I’m sorry” she said, her voice a near whisper.

A hand came to rest on her shoulder and gently pushed her back onto the bed. A moment later she felt the soft tugging sensation of someone sitting beside her. Her aunt made a soft tutting sound and ran a hand through her hair.

“Oh Nia, Oh my little Neeve” The hand moved from her hair and pulled her into a hug. “I’m just trying my best to look out for you. We both.. We all know your mind is going. I overheard some of the others talking about it below. Some are already suggesting you might be more of a liability than an asset. They’re worried you could ruin this opportunity for all of us”

“I-”

“Shh sh” her aunt cut her off, stroking her hair once more “I won’t let them get rid of you but this attitude of yours, this laziness, it only makes it harder for me to convince them you can be useful”

Her shoulders sagged and again she uttered an apology.

“Hey now, it’s okay. I’m looking after you. I just need you to work harder. Prove to them that you can be useful”

Nia nodded softly in response. She was trying her best, she’d been told to wait up here in case she was required hadn’t she? Had she missed something? Forgotten something? Did she make the whole thing up?

“Now, Lord Ru’Tev wants you out and ready in case something goes wrong tonight. He suspects our guests might be growing suspicious and in the event things get out of control you need to be ready to intervene. Can you do that? Can you do that for me?”

Nia dipped her head once more, she could do that. She couldn’t afford to let them down.

“Perfect, that’s my girl!” The weight beside her lifted once more as her aunt moved back to the door. “I have to get back to this ridiculous role I’ve been given. I’ll come and check up on you later.”

Her aunt departed then, Nia could hear the woman’s footsteps recede as she strode down the plush carpeted hallway. She waited only a moment before rising herself and making her way to her assigned position.

Princess Lys

This was probably one of the more… undignified predicaments that Princess Lys found herself in. Locked in a cage suited for a modest sized animal; Trapped in the old Lord’s basement waiting for him to do who knows what to her. Her mom always did say that men weren’t to be trusted. Given the chance they would take advantage of her, use her even. Perhaps even in ways that were… best not thought about.

Odd warning to come from one’s own mother. Particularly the last bit. As a child, she never thought much of it. But as an adult… Those were the types of comments that made one cringe and tell their parents off, just like any proper adult should. Aaaaaaaaaaaand Lys was an adult… if only just barely.

Lys sighed as she reclined on her side from within the cage, head resting atop her hand. It was an uncomfortable position to say the least, particularly with the cold metal surface she rested atop of, but hoped the relaxed posture would add a sense of unease to her captors.

As of right now she had two guards watching over her. The first guard, who she named Doofus, had a bloodied lip and a swelling eye, curtsy of her left and right hook. The man almost seemed to snarl at her every time he paid her a glance. Each time, she made sure to return his disdain with a smug smile which further pissed him off. Once it even earned her a kick at her cage and a bit of spit, which of course she mimicked as one does. It would be fair to say the gesture did not improve relations.

The other guard made her more uneasy. That one had yet to spare her a single glance. Instead, the man seemed to stare blankly at the wall in front of him. In his hand, he fidgeted with a strange silvery utensil. As he flicked it, it would almost seem to undulate and shift. One moment it would look almost like an oversized two-pronged fork, then a spoon with a long stem and a generous bowl, and the next moment an elongated table knife with jagged teeth. The tool’s sheen wasn't much better. One second it would shine against the light, another it would reflect the light. Other times it would glow, and there were even times where it would just turn dull.

The constant changing made her head spin and her stomach turn. Something wasn’t right about that thing. Was it a fork, a spoon, or a knife? At one time she had tried to fixate on the idea of it being all three, but oddly her brain refused to accept the notion. The idea seemed almost foreign. It had to be one thing or the other!

Fidget. That was the name she had coined for him.

Lys sighed, contemplating her situation. Princess El’lysael, the should-be heir to the throne of the Nation of Sight -assuming one ignored her little brother and the likes of male inheritance- was now nothing more than a prisoner. Wings clipped and magic nullified. It was a thought that irritated her to no end.

This whole time, how could she have been so foolish?! She had spent her life preparing to be a diplomat! She should have seen the signs! And her training? Her ‘dancing lessons’ as her mom liked to put it. All of that had amounted to nothing. -Doofus cursed as he place a new pack of ice on his eye.- Weeeeeeeeeeeell… almost nothing.

“So,-” Lys started, “-What’s the plan here?”

Doofus stared daggers at Lys, while Fidget continued with his… well… fidgeting. Typically

“Hey! You! Fidget!” Lys yelled with a whistle. “I’m talking to you!”

Doofus frowned. “Fidget?” He repeated.

Fidget stopped his fidgeting, and finally he spared her a glance.

“Finally.” Lys said. “You know, Doofus, I’ld thought he’d never stop.”

“Doofus? DOOFUS?!” The man repeated, standing up. His face turning red.

Fidget held up his hand. His face void of emotions. Reluctantly Doofus relaxed. With a flick of Fidget’s wrist, the tool settled into its knife form.

Uh-oh…

Fidget rose from his seat, knife at his side. It was a knife right? It had to be a knife!

“So high and mighty. All you Normies are the same.” Fidget said in a voice barely above a whisper.

Lys felt her breath catch at the word ‘Normies’. This man, he wasn’t just a man. He was a Crazed. And... if he was Crazed... then the prison...

“You’re lucky, you know?” Fidget continued. “We’re supposed to keep you alive for now… however…”

Fidget stabbed the wall with the knife and cut through it like butter… Or… had he cut through it???

Lys's head spun. Had he sliced through the wall, or had that crevice always lurked unnoticed?

Fidget cocked his head and gave her a faint smile. “An ear, a finger, a tongue, perhaps even an entire hand. People don’t need those to live, do they Sid?”

Sid -Doofus- smirked. “No.” He said. “I don’t think they do.”

Lys held her tongue. She didn’t think this was an idle threat.

Seemingly satisfied, Fidget returned to his seat. The fidgeting continued. As did the staring at the wall.

Karina Frost

Especially after the little 'prank' someone pulled on her, it didn't take long for the exhausted Karina fall asleep. Despite the several... uncommon situations they faced recently, she still didn't think there was anything wrong... apart from the obvious effects of the divergent, of course. Unfortunately, she would soon find out how wrong she was...

It was already late when out of nowhere, Karina heard a piercing scream from a familiar voice, Sil, screaming through the hallways, loud enough to wake up Karina. While she didn't quite catch what Sil had said, the sheer volume of her cries were loud enough to send a wave of irritation going through her, forcing her to open her eyes.

The very moment she did though, she was met with an alarming scene. Pairing on top of her, the figure of one of the servants held a dagger high, ready to plunge on Karina as she slept. Out of pure reflex, Karina rolled to the side as the blade plunged, evading it by a hair's width as she fell down from the side of the bed. In the blink of an eye, she immediately reached to her rapier, leaning to the side of the bedside table. In one fluid motion, from her current posture still kneeling on the ground, Karina unsheathed her rapier and stepped forward as she stood up, aiming to strike the servant in an upwards lunge, only for her blade to be reflected by the servant's dagger in a quick, surprised movement.

"Karina?! W-What's going on?" Akai shouted, alarmed as she woke up to the sound of combat inside their room.

"Shit... I should've known... It was just too good to be true. Everything was going just far too smoothly..." Karina said, cursing.

"Unfortunately for them... Magic is not my only strong point." Karina said, assuming the elegant posture that was a symbol of her fencing style.

"WAKE UP EVERYONE!" Karina's voice echoed through the halls as she shouted.

"Kill everyone who isn't either the princess or one of ours. We've been ambushed. The princess was probably already captured." she finished as she slowly walked towards the servant with her rapier on hands. The confidence, measured arrogance on her expression and posture were clear indications that Karina wasn't bluffing. Even without magic, her cold stare emanated danger.

The servant knew it had lost the element of surprise and one of the best opportunities they had to deal with Karina. The one saving grace it had over Karina was the fact that she was clearly unable to use her magic.

A Poor Prisoner

Peytr Ruhnoveltz

A man stood in darkness, lit by only those further down. He had not seen light in sometime, but he saw that there was light and talking. He heard talking. He listened, it was several of the jailers, newer ones, the old ones had gone too far. He remembered one of them, but these two new ones were different. He marked things about them, that was easy, they were easily identifiable traits about them both even through seeing them a few times. But there was a different voice, a female voice. It was different, he had heard several women while he was here, yet this one seemed saner, and younger than most of them.

He rested his head against the cell door as he slowly felt it pop, the lock had somehow, disengaged. He slowly moved away from the door, his hand touched it, it felt warm. Warmer than the stone, and he enjoyed the more solid wood door to what most of the others got. He rested his hand against the few bits of metal and let his boney hands reach to touch more of the wooden door, he slowly lowered a little hatch that someone stuck food in here and there. He saw the little bars that were going from top to bottom and the lights on the other side. But he didn't care, he didn't need anything else in that moment. Something was wrong with his door, and he wouldn't let anyone know, maybe until it was too late. Maybe this time he would exit the square confinement without a pole attached to his neck. Maybe, he would just walk out, and leave, but that voice. There was more down here, there were few that he couldn't let go to suffer as he did. He knew it all, he knew what he had done to several of the others down here that died, he remembered it.

He remembered every moment of their lives, and he stared at the woman down there. Maybe she was like them, maybe she was, if she was he could hurt her. He could hurt a lot of people, he could hurt the two men. He just needed to touch them, and awaken something inside them maybe. That is what the pole is for, to keep him from touching anyone who doesn't want to touch him. The pole keeps them safe, without that they aren't safe. He listened to them, and their threats towards the woman.

"If you do that, you'll be in my hands next, you'll get to see what I can do... You can be apart of what I see." Peytr rasped, his face against the metal plate that was barely open, "Keep up with that, and you'll just be another test subject in a cage with me."

HokumPocus RATS WE'RE THE RATS WE ARE THE RATS

Song and dance most likely predate language.

Lynx had said something akin to that once. The memory of it smeared with the smashing of metal weapons and shouts. A lump in his throat jostled as he hit the ground in a roll tinged by sleep. As he fixated more on the sensation of it, the odd everyday annoyance striking during battle, it began to dawn on him. His magic was nullified. An entire method of communication and combat, gone. His tongue rolled in his mouth the way someone would grope the stump of a limb that had been chopped off.

The adrenaline of the realization overpowered the fleeting traces of weariness. "Now!" he shouted.

Lynx careened towards Tayla's attacker, claws bared. Rather than connect with their intended target, all twenty hit the ground and scattered like loose nails in a workshop. Octavio watched his familiar buckle and roll and followed the momentum with his own movements. Misfortune surrounded them, sure, but he had two coin flips.

His dagger messily connected with the servant's abdomen, Lynx a blur as he fought to intimidate another male servant that had been stalking behind.

The misfortune intensified the distraction. They could still communicate mentally, at least.

Octavio dug the dagger out and engaged in a scuffle with the servant. Arms and legs intersected in a series of crude grapples and shoves, both winding their movements with care that reached trepidation and ending by crashing them into one another. A single misstep from either would prove fatal. The brief war of attrition ended in Octavio's favor, however, with the man stumbling for a pause just long enough for him to go for a second attack. The way the dagger pierced the servant's skin was a far cry from the precision Octavio had developed throughout his travels, but it got the job done, so to speak. Any sense of victory dissipated with his second foe.

The second male servant, now free of Lynx's flurries, tore the gap and air between them. Octavio wheeled himself to use the dying man as a shield, then pushed the man forward, watching his body morph. Lynx continued his barrage of feints and bites sensing the opening. Despite the teamwork the second servant proved to be a tougher fight, their short swords clashing and streaking near the stumbling soon to be corpse. Octavio made greedy cuts across the man's upper body, and received one across his arm in turn. The sting of pain made him hop backwards. He had to be more careful. His illusion magic... it was smoldered, not extinguished, he realized. He already knew it wouldn't be enough to form a whole person. But just how much did the servants know?

"Rise! My undead servant! Annihilate our prey!"

The dying man's eyes. He coated them in a thin sheen of white. It was entirely useless, but they didn't know that. The man would appear, for the briefest of moments, to be reanimated. Or so that was the plan. The second servant made a move to step back, but he was faster. His dagger scraped across the servant's face, then closed in on his throat. This second opponent too morphed in front of his eyes. Their bodies slumped on the cold floor, entirely changed in their features.

Octavio exhaled loudly, towards both Tayla and Lynx. "That first act of theirs was clever, I'll give them that. Although there's an air of inexperience to them, as if they were actual servants." He remembered having called them amateurs during the tour. "I almost feel bad." He looked down at his dagger and tutted. "Now my sleeping knife is all dirty."

Lynx tensed his front legs the way a man would ready a weapon. "There is no time to rest. We should expect more threats and seek the others."

Karina Frost

Even though Karina was trained, there was only so much she could do against that number of attackers without her magic. Trying to be something like a one-person-army and take every single attacker she saw on sight was a terrible idea, and Karina knew that. Due to that, she fought only when strictly necessary and tried to avoid detection as much as possible. Of course, this meant moving more carefully instead of blazing through the mansion. Due to that, Karina took noticeably longer to find the others than she would like to.

"I hate to be the one to throw salt on the open wound but... Do we already know what's going on?" Akai asked in a hushed voice as she followed Karina.

"No... And that is what irritates me. The fact that the Lord's own mansion was invaded and the lord himself is nowhere to be seen is very suspicious... Plus, this place was supposed to be one of the most secure prisons around. For such 'accident' to happen just as we visit it, escorting the princes is far too much of a 'coincidence'..." Karina said with an irritated tone.

"So you're saying this was all planned? But by who?" Akai asked.

"That's what I'm trying to find out. Capturing the Lord would be a good first step." she continued, letting a smirk appear on her expression. Karina didn't like being deceived and should she find the Lord after all this happened, her 'interrogation' wouldn't be a kind and calm one.

It didn't take long until Karina started heard some familiar voices coming from one of the rooms. At first, Karina sneaked nearby the door to assess the situation, but when she heard the calmness in the voices coming from inside, she knew they were all safe.

Knocking in the door as a way to announce herself, Karina got ready to enter.

"Tayla, Octavio? It's me, Karina." she said as she slowly entered the room, with her hands raised, avoiding a hostile posture in order to avoid any accidental friendly fire. Her rapier, with it's tip slightly bloodied, still on her hands.

"Are you all okay? Has anyone seen Chres? Both the lord and the princess are nowhere to be found... I'm starting to think this was all a trap from the very beginning." Karina said as she slowly and carefully closed the door behind her.

Tayla

Interactions with @HokumPocus @13Org

Tayla braced herself as her attacker closed in. She reached for a nearby vase, and-

Octavio and Lynx sprang to life and disposed of her attacker. Tayla exhaled audibly. For once this crummy town had actually provided the good fortune she needed.

The vase to her right suddenly fell over and landed atop Tayla’s bare foot.

”SON OF A-”

Tayla fell to the ground cradling her foot as more servants flowed in.

Shit! Shit! Shit!

Gritting her teeth, Tayla moved into action and grabbed her discarded blade off the floor. However, before she could move. Lynx and Octavio had already disposed of them all. And… Senses take her name.

”The hell? How come your magic is working?” She complained while making her way to the bedside to recover her other blade which the first attacker had used to skewer the bed with.

”Thanks for the save, by the way.” She said to Octavio begrudgingly. She didn't like that she had required another's help to survive this encounter.

With a sigh, she stared down at her sleepwear and then eyed the attire she wore from the previous day. ”I'm not about to leave the room like this. This clothing isn't practical for fighting. Do me a favor and turn your back, would you? I'll make this quick.”

She hurriedly swapped attire when Karina suddenly popped in while Tayla was halfway through.

”For the love of-!” Tayla shouted while ducking below the bed. Honestly, this woman! Could she not knock?!

Tayla quickly threw on her top.

”Chres is gone.” She spat out in annoyance. ”Sil says he went for a walk before getting attacked. His magic isn't working, and neither is my own. This guy however...” She pointed in Octavio's direction and rolled her eyes.

”Sil has gone off to look for him, but not before mentioning something about the princess getting captured. So bottom line, we're sitting pretty in a ripe stink of a pile of dung. Funny how that always seems to happen to you lot.”

Nia
Milaine

Nia came to dazed and disorientated. The musty smell of carpet fiber filled her nostrils and drawing in a breath elicited an involuntary groan. Her head spun as she shuffled onto her back and her eyes rolled as she tried to focus on the ceiling wheeling nauseatingly above. Groggily, her exhausted mind tried to untangle the past few minutes.

After separating from Chres, she had begun making her way back towards the guest quarters. She had just passed into one of the larger hallways when someone had slipped around a door frame and punched her right in the gut. Hard. That explained the most pressing pain at least. She had doubled over at the punch and someone had in turn smashed her over the back of the head. Past that it was indistinct words, blurry half formed images and a ringing pain that seemed to fill every inch of her skull.

Upon trying to rise she found her hands and legs bound together with cord tied so tightly that it bit into her wrists and ankles.

“What am I going to do with you?” came an all too familiar voice from somewhere further in the room. The tone was indistinct but Nia felt the words sure as a knife sliding between her ribs.

”Aunt Lainey?” she stammered, her mouth felt fuzzy and she tasted blood on her lips. A blow to the face? When had that happened?

Nia felt herself pulled by her bound wrists, dragged over her own feet and into an awkward kneeling position. A hand grabbed her by the chin and forced her gaze up until she was face to face with Milaine.

”What were you thinking?” she hissed, fingers beginning to dig into the bruised flesh of Nia’s face. ”Helping a Normie? Killing our own people?”

”No, I didn’t I-” her frantic response was cut off by a savage slap that sent her sprawling awkwardly once more.

”Do not speak to me girl” and in those words, Nia felt a hint of her aunt’s power, a cold, numbing feeling that made her mouth lock shut. ”Do you have any idea what I have sacrificed for this? I have given you everything you could want and yet you spit in my face!”

Nia had barely enough time to brace against the kick that followed her aunt's words. She spluttered in pain, unable to utter any words. When she had recovered she found her aunt still standing above her, venom in her eyes.

”I don’t understand why you insist on punishing me. Is it not enough that I raised you? That I cover for your every inadequacy and mistake at the expense of my own standing. Do you have any idea what you could cost me?”

“I’m sorry” Nia managed, her words slurred by the command restricting her voice.

“You’re sorry?” came the pointed reply before it was reiterated sharper still ”You’re sorry?! Sorry won’t undo the trouble you’ve caused me. Sorry won’t fix your mistakes!”

Her aunt fell silent and in the pause Nia struggled to rise, to see her face. When their eyes met at last, Milaine’s expression was cold and impassive.

”It seems I’ve been too soft on you. she said at last ”If you won’t change your selfish behavior then I need to take more drastic measure”

“No…” Nia gasped as she felt a creeping panic rise within her.

”It’s for your own good, I’m doing this for you Neeve” she gestured and figures appeared at the corner of her vision, dragging her to her feet. ”Take her to the basement, give her Xyrlos until I’m ready to collect her.”

“Yes my lady” came a gruff reply from somewhere to her right and Nia felt herself being carried from the room.

“Oh and Nia” the movement paused and the following words were as chilling and numbing as winter ice. ”You will do as I say”
