Appearance: Name: Haze Kanoa
Occupation: Delivery driver / DJ
Backstory: Filled with beauty and mystique, the islands of Alola were a childhood paradise for the rambunctious, youngest daughter of a wealthy mining magnate and his wife, former Kimono Girl, Lady Sayo. Born Heisia Troy, she was raised on Akala, at the ancestral homestead of her father's family, and following graduation bounced between islands taking odd jobs before settling back on Melemele, where she was born.
An understanding of the innate connection between pokemon and the natural world was a keystone value of the Kanoa family, one that was violated by Heisia's father when he began prospecting for minerals on a parcel of their land and grew a business around it. Determined to disassociate herself with the shame, Heisia took her Grandmother's surname and started going by Haze around middle school. Taught to view Pokemon as manifestations of nature, to observe their habits as a secret rhythm keeping in time with the heartbeat of the land, Haze developed a very deep sense of duty to their care and protection.
The family homestead sat on acres of fruit orchards and graze lands, where beasts of burden were rehabilitated and kept, and saplings grown to supply grove planting initiatives around mining sites. Unlike her older siblings whose paths were charted for them, Haze lived on a longer leash, built friendships with the local kids, travelled freely across the island during school holidays, mingled with tourists, and joyfully pursed her passions which led her to discover a knack for raising Pokemon and love of music. She kept Pokemon big and small, and cared for them on the grounds until the land or sky called them home. It was unprecedented freedom by Troy standards but the perks of being the youngest of eight stopped there.
With so many older cousins and siblings departing on their own journeys, the future of the Kanoa Ranch narrowed in on Heisia. She adored her Grandmother, obeyed her without question, and capably absorbed the work left unattended by her cousins, but the fact she had for many years gone without naming a successor caused Haze to worry. Willing the role onto herself, she travelled to resorts and sites across Akala during breaks in her senior year, prospecting for ranch-hands and fruit pickers that could supplement the local workforce and light peppering of help from visiting family during holidays. Once her Grandmother cottoned on, she arranged for her to embark on a working holiday across Alola after graduation, and without Haze knowing, signed her up to work the next year with her father. She worked for small community programmes situated across the islands that she soon realised were attached to Troy Resources: food banks supplied by farmlands on the fertile soils above their mining operations, marine and wetland reserves near effluent management sites, and a sanctuary for rehabilitating impacted wildlife - the Kanoa Ranch.
Haze reached Melemele frustrated and determined to melt into all its modern conveniences and recreations. At the completion of her year's contract she left her father's compound and took up work as a food delivery driver in Hau'oli city. She became a guest DJ at hotels, resorts and venues after growing an online presence playing sets from different outdoor locations, which initially was a means to play her music anonymously after the dinner rush. As her new persona grew, she began to like the culture and nightlife that surrounded it. The silver bird mask with its darkened lenses, and worn with an exaggerated personality, facilitated a momentary escape to the stars, where nothing on land mattered, and where the calls of Akala could fade into soft memory.
On one still night when the streets swelled with partygoers hungering after a meal, Haze encountered a group of Meowth terrorising a lone Rattata guarding a discarded takeaway tray. She chased the mons away, startling the tiny mouse into hiding and, on a feeling, took the tray home with her. Checkers became her first companion since leaving Akala, with his own pen, running wheel and track leading around the apartment. He grows agitated and jittery when she is far away so she wears his pokeball around her neck, colouring a black heart above its centre. Steadfast Manu became a permanent resident following a run in with her scooter and Diva was a gift from an employer - although "gift" is a generous term most days. Ironically, in all the months Haze developed her DJ Halo persona into an escapism tool, she never once accepted gigs outside of Alola. When her agent presented the SS Lugia offer, he made sure to emphasise on the famed migration of Chinchou. Who it was that accepted the call - DJ Halo, Haze, Heisia - she cannot be sure, but she was now hurtling towards the world she wished to leave behind.
Personality:DJ Halo possesses a wave-like grace when in motion, swirling her turn-tables and performing rhythmic movements behind them. The music moves through her and she delights in letting the crowd's energy set her pace. Haze Kanoa, on the other hand, is a militant planner who doesn't do dalliances or down time and devotes little effort to social courtesy. Precision is king in all she does, spontaneous events are promptly assigned an action plan and passion projects are scheduled in between fitness, Pokemon care, eating, sleeping, work hours...breaths. No possession of hers is out of place nor affair left unattended to, and with relationships it all boils down to two considerations: will this serve me, and what must I give in return? A promise is as solid as law to her, but whatever tenderness or trust she keeps bolted down with steel is expressed only for her Pokemon.
