Thatâs a Wrap - Part One
FF2V Holiday AU

OOC: Part 1 of a holiday themed AU that I started in 2021. With your kind permission, Iâll finish it this time around.
Another day on China Doll. Another toilet tah clean.
Abby sprayed in tha solution, goinâ all âround tha underside of tha rim. Then she hit it with her brush, scrubbinâ anâ diggin at everâ spot til the bowlâs all shiny. Once that partâs done she grabbed a fresh paper roll from her cart anâ slipped it inta place. âCept fer makinâ a pass with the mop, she declared âOne down, two tah go.â
Second stall was a rinse and repeat. Sheâd jest dropped on her knees in the third when âer hip vibrated. Abby pulled the little reader from âer back pocket.
New Message from Thomas Jinks. (Image attached.)She thumbed the link. The screen glowed with both his words anâ the pic he shared.
Come back to New Melbourne. The glamorous life awaits.Pitcher was a closeup of Thomas, grinninâ all crooked as blood anâ fish guts was drippinâ down his face. If sheâs any judge, looked like the Jinks kids got up tah tha devil while theyâs cleaninâ their catch. Abby held her capture up soâs tah git a proper shot âoâ her scrubbinâ the toilet, a big smirk on âer face fer tha camâra. Then, she typed a message right back at him.
And give up all this?Thomas musta liked thatân, âcuz he didnât waste no time.
Darling Crabby, my Princess of Poop. The deckhand giggled anâ banged out a reply.
Thatâs Queen of Commodes, to you. Donât you have work to do?Next message from Thomas come with an audio file attachment.
My brothers say youâre right. Give this song a listen. I heard it and thought of you. She took a minute, cleaninâ out the last toilet afore she stood up. Showers was next. Easy peasy, âcuz they both mopped up jest like the tiled deck. Abby fished the buds outta her pocket. With her mop anâ bucket at tha ready, she pressed âplay.â
âAnd cut!â Edgarâs voice rang across the soundstage. Morgan knew at once that the director considered this take to be
The one. He was so polite that one needed to listen carefully for his tells. Unlike Joss, if Edgar wasnât satisfied with a take, his call to cut scene came in the form of a dubious question. Hearing âCut?â was her signal to approach him for a quick consult before cameras rolled again.
She could see him, laughing and chatting with the head ciinematographer. Edgar was happy. Today was a wrap for shooting in Studio A, but she had work to do. Morgan laid the ear buds on the prop table before donning her mask. âAll good?â she asked the guest director.
âSplendid,â his eyes sparkled above his mask. âTomorrowâs the day. How do you feel?â
âTerrified.â
He dismissed her worries with a âbahâ and a hand upon her shoulder. âYou killed it in blocking, Morgan. Repeat that, and tomorrow shall be a very short day. Get some rest tonight, alright?â
âIâve got a table read in thirty,â she replied. âThen itâll be âtrailer, sweet trailerâ until Makeup at five AM.â
âAs the lord intended,â Edgar chuckled as he flagged down his Floor Manager. âMiles, letâs prep for B-roll.â
âRight away,â the serious young man keyed his shoulder mic. âThatâs a wrap, people!â his voice echoed through the studio. âAnybody who isnât a gaffer should clear the set. One hour dinner break for everyone shooting B-roll tonight. Check your departmental sheets for tomorrowâs call times. And remember, everybody,â he paused as the entire cast and crew shouted his nightly farewell message back to him.
âGET HOME SAFE, COME BACK SOBER!!!â
Thirty minutes til table read. Enough time to wolf down her dinner salad and get to the rehearsal room. Morgan hurried to the craft services table to find her meal all packaged in a clear plastic container.
Romaine lettuce, cucumbers, and vinaigrette, was inscribed on the lid. A small bag of almonds had been taped on as well. Amelia never forgot. Sheâd just collected a water bottle when a voice came from behind.
âCal Junior, I presume?â
Even behind the slight muffle of his mask, that voice was unmistakable. Morgan turned, her eyes widening at the proof of her ears. âWhyâŚheyâŚwow, Mr. FiâŚâ
âItâs Nathan,â he offered a friendly elbow bump. âAnd Iâm the one who should be starstruck. I just wanted to tell you how much I love what youâre doing with Abby.â
âOh,â Morgan expelled a breath that seemed to deflate her. âI love her so much. Sheâs a joy to playâŚbut sometimes I think sheâs starting to take over. I catch myself speaking âFireflyâ and slipping into her twang at places like Starbuckâs,â she laughed nervously.
âShiny!â Nathanâs smile was self evident through his mask. âHappens to me all the time. I catch myself channeling Mal during little momentsâŚlike contract negotiations,â he shrugged. âSo, âyou all set for tomorrow?â
âNoâŚyesâŚI donât know,â Morgan shook her head. âDoing both parts in two single takes? I mean..it feels good in rehearsal, but when I think about tomorrow? She clutched her stomach. âButterflies for days.â
âHmm,â Nathan shrugged. âThatâs not what Summer says at all.â
âReally?â
âReally.â In the distance rose the high pitched whine of electric motors. The gaffers had wheeled out their lifts, and were now headed up to refocus the lighting. âShe and I had dinner last night. Now Summerâs always a pretty positive type, but for the life of me, I couldnât get her to shut up about your rehearsals. Believe me, I tried..even offered to pay her. That was a joke.â
âIâm sorry,â Morgan tilted her head. âIâm sure itâll be fine.â But she wasnât. Not a bit.
Nathan dipped hands into his pockets. âYouâve worked with Summer going on three weeksâŚlong enough to know each otherâs moves and to have fun with it. FunâŚthatâs the key,â he said. âAlan and I brought Edgar in for tomorrowâs scene because he can capture the detail and draw that fun out. Tomorrow? Summer and Edgar are gonna have a great time. Iâd suggest to you that youâve put in the hard work. Tomorrowâs the fun partâŚbut Abby already knows that.â
Morgan smiled as her eyes met his. âShe does, doesnât she?â The studio clock flashed, catching her attention. âOh,â she scooped up her things. âSorry, Iâve got a table read in fifteen.â
He nodded. âRight, you and Val for âThe Great Drawl-Off.â Joss was worried itâd come off comical, so heâs liable to be stressed. Donât mind him, okay?â
âI wonât. He doesnât bother me.â
âHave things been alright between you?â
âListen,â Morgan spoke frankly. âIâve worked with so many indy directors who make Joss on his worst day look like an angry kitten. I can handle some needling. Besides,â she looked about the soundstage with itâs numerous shooting sets. âHe brought this to life. And youâŚâ
âAnd you,â Nathan interjected. âThereâs not a person involved here who doesnât love what weâre doing. That âverse,â he pointed toward the set as lights flashed and moved in the gaffersâ hands, âstarted in Jossâ head, but every one of us has helped it along. You and the China Doll crew own it every bit as much as Serenityâs crew does.â He cast a wistful eye over the darkened galley set. âThereâs a lot of love in these places. Do me a favor, Morgan,â his smile resurfaced beneath the mask. Enjoy this.â
âI willâŚI do.â
âAnd donât forget,â Nathan lifted an index finger. âChristmas party tomorrow night after we wrap. Jewel and Sean are coming. There may be caroling, but I didnât say thatâŚnow, youâd better run. Tell Val I said âHaaaagh.â
âOkay,â Morgan chuckled, âand do me a favor? Donât tell Joss I called him an âangry kitten?â
âNo promises.â
