Ernesto

(Adrenal Boost:One Man Army going down to Slight Superhuman)

In Between Nico defeating what might have been one of the closest things to a god on this planet, and Quingshe literally ripping off mythology, Ernesto felt…Elated. He wasn’t even involved, and yet only witnessing these events made him have an adrenaline rush that he seldom ever felt. His NA seemed to have the same thought, powering up to a level he reached only once in testing.

'Would this even be enough to be on par with them?' He mused. 'Probably not' He concluded, but that isn’t what was really important, was it?

He should definitely try to get a spar with Nico and, if he could swing it from her, make Quingshe create another mythological creature he could battle with.

“Qingshe here, requesting a headcount. What’s happened? Is everyone alive? Intact? If you’re in a position for it, we should begin the evacuations immediately,” the Snake of the Zodiac said, concern in her tone. “I would aid you, but I’m going to be busy trying to blunt this storm,” she admitted.

Fumbling with the radio, he responded “Ernesto here, just witnessed your little theatrical stunt. Everyone seems fine-ish enough. I even saw Cristina again. I’m going to help with the evac now. My power isn’t gonna last long, so i better get moving” he admitted, without any enemies or Quingshe little theatrics pumping him up, his NA was already depowering at a fast rate.

Fortunately, he should have more than enough time to help.

Closing the distance less than a second, Ernesto fist pick-up was Nil, who seemed to be shell shocked from something. The poor girl didn’t even resist or react much.

After securing her, he could move on to the actual PoWs. His current power wasn’t gonna last much time, but his speed and strength should be able to bring a great number of them to safety.

'Well,All things considered, this could have been a worse first mission.'

Between what could be described as two demigods clashing, the biblical storm pouring down, and the swallowing of the false sun that had granted him strength beyond his station, what truly bothered Nico Makri was two things: the massive snake that had appeared, and his foot. Both could be solved later, but for now, he stayed on the beach, letting the rain cool him off as he pointed POWs to the evacuation point.

His fatigue slowly began to set in as he milled about, listening to radio chatter. The battle was over, and they had won. Somehow, Nico survived a brawl with the leader of Downward Descent, even if it was a mere avatar. No one seemed too injured, and casualties were at a minimum. He kept a slight smile on his face as he sat on the beach and looked at the prisoners leaving, trying his best to cool off after using Sun Stoke beyond its usual limits. Not bad, not bad at all. Still got all my fingers and toes, and my head’s on my shoulders.

He turned on his radio’s microphone, speaking up in roughly accented English. “Makri here. First, I’m still alive, and mostly everyone else seems that way too. Second, for record-keeping, I think this is the third terrorist organization that has an issue with me. He chuckled a bit, sighing. “Gonna ask about the sun eating snake later. For now, I’ll be on the beach cooling down until I can actually move again.” He then turned off his mic, dispelling Helios Rod and looking up at the now stormy sky,

Gotta talk to the Snake later. To figure out what just happened.

Henri

Mekong River

"Sergeant Janssens, reporting in" Henri replied to Qinshe's query, "I am fine and going to help with the evacuation. Over."

Henri moved out to the PoW camp, where the others were already helping with the evacuations. Henri himself took one of the injured to carry on his back. Travel through the storms was not easy, but everyone needed to hurry. The helicopters wouldn't be able to stay long in this extreme weather.

Henri put carefully his patient down and looked at the sky. The storm was certainly a powerful one, something not easy to tame, if it could be tamed. Still, Henri wondered if he could lessen its strength by removing ambient magic from it. He could reach very far out, but perhaps the bubble could provide a small, windless spot. "Fighting in Shade"

Nothing. The storm was pure nature. Huo Ren's sun had caused disruptions in the atmosphere, but didn't effect anymore. Leonidas would be of no further help, so Henri shut it down again, just in case the PLA made another attempt. They had seemingly left the area, but you can never know with Arms-Masters.

He was of no use as a fighter now. All he could do was to try and help as many people towards the ridge, where the helicopters hopefully still waited. It was a kilometer journey through harsh winds, but what could you do? Henri took the injured soldier back to carry and continued with the others.

Mission Three - Assault on Jinghong Dam

Jinghong PoW Camp - 10/25/2022, 23:00 UTC+8

The original plan had been to hike up a ridge one kilometer away, where ASEAN helicopters were waiting to take them to safety. But the storm had made such a plan impractical at best, and suicidal at worst, given Ai Chen's choice of 'uniform' to allot to her prisoners. Noel fumed at that, knowing full well that barring a miracle, most of the people they rescued would die of actual natural causes due to the cold and wet conditions.

Myron put a hand on his shoulder, mildly pressing on the damp cloth of his uniform. A sign that he cannot just wallow in indecisive despair when they had all but won, and the ridge where they were to rendezvous with the Laotian and Thai helicopters was still within reach, their pilots choosing to risk everything to save those who were no longer able to save themselves.

Let's go, he thought. The final boss is not Huo Ren or Ai Chen or even Pride himself, but the forces of nature itself.

And as he moved, as he forced himself to put one foot before the other in the squelching mud that stuck to his boots, as he tried to ignore the rain and thunder and the howling air, Noel Alonso knew that they were lucky, lucky to have Qingshe and Ernesto and Nico; Marta and Cristina and Nil.

The storm was peaking, but the search-and-rescue helicopters were still heading for that ridge as planned; their pilots still followed their orders to pick up the thousands of prisoners that had been in that damned PoW camp. At least that place was no longer operational; at least its inmates were free, even if only to perish in water and mud and cold and wind.

Headlights shone in front of him as a pickup truck stopped in front of his party. At first, Noel was afraid that it was one last PLA gambit, but the doors opened to show two Filipino men - Former prisoners of the camp judging by the white gym shorts they were wearing - who gestured to Noel, Myron, and Cristina (who was with them) to come inside, along with Nico and the surrendered Chinese Arms Masters (Han and Wei Rui).

When Noel had driven most of the guards insane, the Prisoners did more than just slaughter their guards; they had also stolen and commandeered the large number of trucks that were inside the Jinghong Dam PoW camps. These were sturdy enough to form an ad-hoc convoy to take them to the ridge/rendezvous point where the Thai and Laotian Air Forces were going to take them home.

Marta, Henri, and Ernesto would also be offered a ride on a commandeered Chinese APC - Thankfully not one of those self-animated ones. This vehicle ought to carry the surrendered PLA guards too, if anyone gave any thought to Liu Xie and Sui Mang.

As for Qingshe, she would receive a signal, from the communications console Huo Ren and Cao Bao had left behind, the one given sapience by Shen Tu. The signal would be followed up by a message: Please... Save my Creator. Not now, but one day.

Unidentified Chinese Military Base - 10/25/2022, 23:00 UTC+8

"I don't care about your threats to animate my household possessions and turn them into murder weapons," Huo Ren said before he smacked Shen Tu across the face, hard enough to knock the young man down to the ground. "I did not get Nico Makri. I did not get Noel Alonso. So I need compensation; a consolation prize if you will..."

Shen Tu spat on his face, then said as he brushed himself off and got up, "I am your aide, not one of your 'toys'. I don't think The Party and the Secretary-General will like it if your 'tendencies' became more public than they already are."

Huo Ren would not be deterred as he stepped towards Shen Tu and said, "And yet, if they become public, you'll carry the shame; I don't need to prove my strength and manliness. You on the other hand don't have any. This means I can do to you whatever I want, whenever I want... But right now, I can see you're stressed out, so I will magnanimously postpone your 'private meeting' with me until tomorrow. Be ready."

Shen Tu whirled away from his would-be tormentor with a "Tch!" as he walked off...

Mission Three - Assault on Jinghong Dam, Final Part (Written by QJT)

Wan Hkung - Forward Operating Base - 10/25/2022, 22:35 UTC +8

"Damn this weather!" Gen. Bautista shouted into the wind, pacing back and forth. "A kilometers-long cumulonimbus right on top of-" He activated his satellite phone. "It is confirmed, correct?"

"Affirmative," came the reply amid a wave of static. "Awaiting orders."

"Standby," Bayani grumbled. He shivered in the chill of middle autumn. His compatriot was holed up in a makeshift enclosure, into which he stormed. "Was this your people's do-?"

The admiral held up a finger as he hunched over a desk, his headphones pressed against his ears. Two underlings stood patiently by. The leftmost was equipped with his headset; that of the rightmost was undoubtedly lent to his superior. After ten seconds, he lowered his speakers. An evening of pent frustration culminated in a brisk sigh but still radiated in his visage. "Yes, Lieutenant General. From the garbled trifle, I gathered from inside the storm, either we or the enemy Arms Masters are culpable. Something about a sun-eating snake, as well." Abasolo closed his eyes for a brief pause before resuming. "We have at least five alive, and they reach the final destination in short order."

"Whatever experience you have with helicopters, Adrián, you should know-"

"That they don't mix with unstable winds?" Abasolo replied. "I'm well aware, but I can't dissipate the weather for you. I'm not God. Neither are my subordinates; I can't predict if they can reverse the tempest."

"So what's our plan of action? My choppers are presently burning fuel!"

The admiral reequipped his comms and reached out for a writing utensil and a sheet of paper. "We can't evacuate them now. Land your birds and refuel them; they'll return when the thunderstorm dissipates."

"And in the meantime, they'll be vulnerable to a counterattack. I'll need to strike up the fighters that we intended for the dam. We just handed the entire advance squadron to our adversary on a silver platter!"

Abasolo began to scribble out a paragraph. "The Chinese face the same quandary, with similar conditions. What do you suppose they can do?"

Kunming - Yunnanyi Airport - 10/25/22, 22:35 UTC +8

"A what?!" demanded Field Officer Gao in a volume that pierced the whir and stir of a typical PLAAF installment. A few airmen paused in their preparations, in case they somehow invoked their commander's ire.

"A large thundercloud above Jinghong-"

The dialogue abruptly halted, as did the lights and monitors and surrounding machinery. Not a word was spoken, and utter silence permeated the structure for the first time since its occupation. Gao's shrill cry shattered the peace: "Don't dawdle! Find the error! Get us online again!"

News returned piecemeal, cascading ever grimmer and culminating in foul realizations:
"There's a bright light on the horizon where our scout cut communications. It's our plane, or possibly theirs!"
"I checked the fuse box, sir. There's no fault on our end; it must be that the public power grid is beyond capacity."
"Overloaded at nearly twenty-three hundred? Impossible! Unless..."

The commanding officer's legs trembled. "Launch our full lineup of jets. No exception. No delay," he announced, freezing in place as his men melted into movement. He soon heard the roar of waking engines. His lips pursed in contemplation. He would send a battalion of his finest pilots into a combat zone with practically null information, about a disengaged opponent with apparent control of the weather and the ability to dismantle one of China's largest stone structures.

Only further destruction awaited him. "Damnation," he muttered. He ran out of the building onto the landing strip, forming rigid sweeping motions with his hands as a visual instruction to stand down. The sounds of dozens of planes shutting off were depressing but necessary. Gao could tear up his quarters later.

Jinghong - Mountain Ridge - 10/26/2022, 6:49 UTC +8

Is hell hot or cold? The fiery inferno of battle, the rage-filled overthrow of the prisoner of war captors, and the literal glow of stars manifested on Earth was certainly no enviable prize. And yet, how does that compare to spending life atop a wet, muddy hill, weathering the bitter Fall night drenched in rain, huddling together in the vain quest for warmth? This was the fate of those who ventured to the evacuation point: an outcome luckier than the sorry PRC grunts who perished in the valley.

The singular beacon of hope was broadcast on every frequency, alternating in English and Mandarin, faint through the humidity but gradually louder. The ASEAN soldiers recognized the firm, stalwart baritone of Rear Admiral Adrián Abasolo. It became raspy as midnight approached, to be replaced by the calm, reassuring soprano of his aide Jasmine. As hers faded even as the signal grew in strength, yet another voice would come to her relief. After several hours of unmitigated announcement, a handful of sentences repeated continuously:

"This is the Joint ASEAN Command. We currently assemble a rescue operation for occupants along the Lancang River, both soldiers and civilians. It will arrive after the thunderstorm. Head for flat surfaces of high elevation. If you have remaining stamina, guide others to these zones, as many as possible. Otherwise, if you require assistance, hold tight. Help is on the way. This province's former administrators valued this area as an energy source and a hostage encampment. Those facilities were removed, and they abandoned the residents therein. We will show no such apathy. You will receive mercy without discrimination, no matter your prior allegiances. Upon their arrival, assist the operators as they transport you and your friends to safety. You will survive this torrent."

Between the ceiling made by the cumulonimbus's fluffy mist and the verdant hills of southern Yunnan Province, the familiar rays of the Sun heralded the triumph of dawn. The thunderstorm recoiled from the spectacle and drizzled no more. The wisps of its tops were chopped and dispelled by a dozen copters, bearing a vibrant display of flags: Indonesian, Royal Thai, Philippine, Malaysian. They descended to their target areas as all manner of folk piled in, aided by friend and foe alike. They left on wings of steel, with nary a shot fired...

Intermission Three - All Saints' Day in Mischief Reef (Written by Me)

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/07:50 UTC+8

Sun. Beautiful sun. Not the kind that exists to cause you pain, not a green-colored abomination, but good old Sol. A most welcome sight. The Obsidian Task Force and related personnel lined across the warm sand. They'd been informed of some type of rest, benevolently provided for by the Qing Restoration Society.

A tall bearded man unfurled a luminous banner as he inspected each individual on the line, his chin raised aloft. Finding the assortment sufficient, he planted his Noble Arm in the ground. "Greetings. You have entered the dominion of the True China, under the watchful protection of the Qing Zodiac. I am Master Ren Zhao; address me by my title as you refer to me." He puffed out his chest. "We hereby grant you the privilege of using the amenities here. You will respect the authorities on this island. That acknowledged you are free to go take your... vacation from the horrors of war."

Once they were free to roam the beaches and facilities of Mischief Reef - Within reason - Noel approached Nico, waving so that he could ask, "Volunteer Nico Makri, right? You were awesome back then; I presume you're all right now? No lingering magic cancer?"

Then suddenly concerned that he was losing the thread of the conversation, Noel followed up with, "So, umm... Do you want to go to what was once the Offciers' Cafeteria for some seafood? Even with the supplies we handed out, that is still most of what the QRS has to offer - But don't worry, Myron teleported in some dessert."

And by that, he asked Myron to do a favor for him by porting in some fresh Bibingka and Halo-Halo and reserve a table for them.

Now to drop the bombshell, "But... Uh... Would you be fine if it's just the two of us?"

Hopefully Nico does not get offended, or disgusted, were Noel's panicked thoughts after that.

Cristina

For Cristina, the days after the operation felt like a flash.

It was supposed to be a moment of triumph, they achieved their objective, rescued the hostages and did it without casualties. All things considered she did pretty well facing a Zodiac.

All of it however felt like ash when she found Basilia, her older sister and the reason she even joined this group.

When she saw her sister in that fateful mirror, she assumed the worst and believed that her time to save was running out. Only to know that she was fine and she hated her.

She was fed with lies and now she hates her, worst of all she didn’t even have time to speak for herself.

But what would she say?

The girl decided to simply spend her days training burying herself in training as if she was returned to the days she was in that camp.

She didn’t understand why her superiors were insisting she join this celebration. She needed to get stronger and train mo-.

She felt a slight pain in the shoulder as she went looking for an open secluded space. It was nothing, she was used to it.

Sister Marta Rocha

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/07:50 UTC+8

There are not many activities that one can do while one's arm is swaddled in bandages that are expressly forbidden from getting wet. Sister Marta knew this intellectually, but actually being made fully aware of it was... annoying.

Alone, she sits on a towel, wearing a modest swimsuit. Unable to relinquish the aspiration of a beachside vacation, she sits listlessly, nursing her wounds, tapping at a spent glass of water with a loose straw. The rhythmic percussion soothes her ill mood but doesn't resolve it.

"The Bright side, Marta... look on the bright side..."

She adjusts her parasol to compensate for the shifting sunlight before returning to her appreciation of sounds. The coming and going of the tide... yes, that's a good beat as well.

Mischief Reef

An adrupt stop, let alone adrupt vacation, was not something he had expected to happen, so he hadn't exactly packed spare clothes. Henri didn't usually care for the casual wear most arms-masters usually wore on missions, but at least they weren't as uncomfortable during a rest.

Luckily Henri managed to procure himself some casual clothing from the local supplies. He wasn't hungry at the moment, so he decided to take a little walk across the area. The sun on the clear sky certainly felt relaxing after the prompt tropical storm only a few moments ago. The area was certainly developed. Besides military presence, Henri could see some fishing at the area. Nothing was seemingly on edge, with most people just going on their lives. Although Henri had a feeling that sooner or later this reef too would become a scene of battle.

The steps had taken Henri to the beach. The sight of the sea was nothing new to him, but it was still a feeling of being small, not seeing anything on the other side but water. Over the last weeks, and when visiting the seaside, Henri was used to the sight of something appearing from the sea, from singular cruisers to entire navies.

"If only this serenity could stay" Henri sighed and left the beach. Might as well try some of the delicasies available in the reef.

Intermission Three - All Saints' Day in Mischief Reef - Partial GM Post

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022 07:55 UTC+8

Cristina Bernardino

If she searched for a few minutes, Cristina would find out there was a walled-off training yard and shooting range, one that had been abandoned amid the QRS takeover of the island. Was that secluded and open enough?

Well, it was, if not for the young man already practicing martial arts there, a young man she could have sworn had been an enemy just last week, but who now wore the blue-and-gold uniform of the Qing Restoration Society. Noticing the Filipina's presence, Han Rui saluted her and said, "Greetings. And yes, I defected to your side; they promised to pay me and my brother well."

Tilting his head slightly in her direction, the youth added, "That, and seeing your friend defeat the Avatar of Superbia was an additional push - I didn't know that was possible before, to defeat the Descent. Which brings us to another topic... You're the sister of his herald, aren't you? If so, did you think of the chance that you can save her? After all, one impossible thing has been done last week; why not try for another?"

Sister Marta Rocha

Light but audible footsteps disturbed the sand on the beach; it was a boy, one who wore a costume of black, white, and gold, with an unearthly amount of frills that emphasized his thin build. It was Jin Li of the Qing Restoration Society, the 'New Emperor'; he who had lifted up his group from a bunch of theatre artists and glorified LARPers to an actual threat to the Chinese Communist Party. What was he doing here?

"Sister Marta Rocha," the boy said in a lilting tone, "It seems neither of us expected the conflict to take us... Where we are now. When I claimed to restore the Empire of China, as a Constitutional Monarchy, it was as an exercise in absurdity - I was being as ridiculous as possible; flinging globs of wet tissue onto a wall to see what stuck. But one thing led to another and now we're being taken seriously; one can say it might go to my head..."

He chuckled at that, but did not cross the line to giggling; he was not that girlish. Then he spoke, "Serious talk; are you relaxed? I myself need to de-stress after keeping out PLA Navy ships from making another thrust into our position..."

Henri Janssens

Henri would receive a private message on what digital device he had from a secure frequency - It was his superiors in the Laleaps Unit.

US Midterms are in 8 days. The party slated to sweep most states wants to halt aid to Ukraine and their opponents have vowed to halt aid to ASEAN unless Ukraine got its share of help. Thus, it is predicted that no help will come at all.

This was going to be bad news; everyone needed to know but who should he tell first?

Nil

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022 07:55 UTC+8

On their stay in Panganiban the Arms Masters would be enjoying a tranquil, albeit weirdly abrupt, vacation. Out of all members Nil was by far the fastest to get used to the new surroundings, one night sleep was the only thing required for her to promptly ignore all worries of previous and future missions, by the time they ended up on the atoll, her mind had already moved on.

The new morning Nil was already awake having forgoed the night’s sleep to instead sneak around and observe other people’s late night habits and, for those who went to sleep, what items they used before and after the night, with interest Nil mentally noted who preferred to grab a book, while others their phone and of course those who barreled straight to bed. Most in the team were probably not ready for her staying up at night and silently walking around the place, only to go to sleep at the least sensible times.

Just last time the month changed during mission off-time, and just like last time Nil did not realize it did.

Going out at an early hour for a 10 kilometer or so walk, Nil sneaked out as the rest of the team discussed with Zhao, he talked way too much and Nil had no intention of staying close to him.

The omnidirectional presence of the ocean was not at all comforting, but there’s only so much someone can spend indoors, especially when everyone else also went outside to enjoy the sun… or the beach… or whatever people did with their time, it was time to check it out.

The freelancer shot a blank stare at Han Rui, she heard about him or more accurately read the reports everyone wrote. She couldn’t care less to be honest.

She listened to him as she manifested her Noble Arm, landing simple strikes on an abandoned dummy in quick succession, then she swung more because it wasn’t enough. The last swing cut the dummy in half and burned with white flames.

The freelancer stared at her, one question at her mind.

“And why do you care? It’s not like you know me.” she spat, words filled more venom than intended.

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022

Marta looked at the boy who approached her, seemingly unsure how to respond. She blinks slowly, then again, and cracks a gentle smile.

"...I see. You must have a lot on your mind, then. In my limited experience, unstressed people don't start conversations like that."

Having said this, she turns longingly to the sea.

"Sorry, I shouldn't be saying that. I thank you for the hospitality, I just think it's a shame I can't go for a swim. The water looks lovely."

Then she turns her head inquisitively.

"...that said, aren't you hot in that outfit? I don't have any spare towels, but I can share the shade if you like."

Mischief Reef

"Damn it!" Henri exclaimed after reading the message, "Trouble, Trouble, Trouble... With a capital T"

But complaining wouldn't help. The fact was that US aid in the crises both in Europe and Asia were expected to run dry, and others would have to know about them as well.

To be honest, it didn't really matter, who Henri told about it first. Everyone would need to know sooner or later. It was best to just go an see, who he'd meet first.

Soon Henri stumbled upon Nico and Noel. The two seemed to be attempting to get closer to each other, so to speak, but nothing deeper than that had happened yet. Or at least not that Henri could see. Whatever the case, this seemed like a good spot to start.

"I'm sorry to interrupt you two" he apologized, "But I think you should see this."

Henri presented the message to Nico. "As you can imagine, if America pulls itself out of the Ukrainian and ASEAN matters, we will be left all alone. Call it a hunch, but this might be their first targets, if it's not already. But, what do you think?"

Intermission Three - All Saints' Day in Mischief Reef

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022 08:00 UTC+8

"What I do know is that you work with people who can pull off a miracle," Han Rui replied to Cristina, even as he stared at the destroyed dummies, appreciative of the techniques that went into the attack. "And you stood for more than a minute against that 'Pervert Dragon' himself, so you're competent."

His English was good but also student-like, as though he was reciting from books. Nevertheless, he continued in a matter-of-fact tone, "Redemption is what you were taught in your Churches, right? That you can 'baptize' people and free them of sin. Find a way to do that; you have a band of actual comrades - Use them. And if you have not depleted your Noble Arm's potential, get a new power that can drive the corruption out of your sister and then hug her..."

He then looked at his watch and said, "Speaking of siblings, I have to eat breakfast with my brother; he defected too. But one last piece of advice: Do not underestimate yourself and your ability to pull off a miracle. Or if you feel you can't... Ask Ms. Lei or Mr. Makri or That Nun for help reversing the Descent's brainwashing. Don't just mope around or rage at the world - Unlock a new power and get better."

@Digmata

"You forget," Jin Li started his response, "My Noble Arm can control water; I can cool myself off whenever I want. And I'm the one offering hospitality here; aren't I?"

But the smile on his face as he asked that question showed that Marta's words had their desired effect of relaxing his mood. He then crouched, and as his Noble Arm flashed into existence in his right hand, and he began doodling on the sand with its blade like the child he was, the boy spoke, "Thanks anyway, you helped."

Looking at the blue horizon of the sea, the claimant to the 'Restored Qing Dynasty' continued, "By the way, have you heard the bad news from the US? Preliminary polling suggests that the party against aid to the Ukrainians is going to sweep most states, and the other party has insisted on tying ASEAN aid to aid for Kyiv. We are likely to not get either in this case unless a miracle happens among the American electorate."

Then he smirked and said, "Let's just say I'm going to gamble and hope that a miracle happens, while at the same time preparing for if it doesn't. What are your thoughts?"

@Amidatelion

Noel was the first to reply, saying, "Preliminary polling is often accurate - The war has worsened the US' border crisis and that is going to embolden the critics of the current President's party... And the current President of the United States wants to focus on internal prosperity and infrastructure anyway, even if it means letting his alliances dry up. We're going to have to prepare to stand on our own; maybe commit to an insurgency should things go even further south. Heck, it's a miracle we held out this long, and that in turn is due to us."

He then sighed and said, "Lingayen Gulf was decisive in that it prevented a quick Chinese conquest of the Philippines. The next two operations - Mischief Reef and Jinghong Dam - loosened the noose the Chinese had around us. Ironically, it was the Jinghong Dam operation that provides us with hope now - Ai Chen's actions are a scandal to both her people and most other nations, and that might get voters in the US to vote for candidates who would punish people like her and Huo Ren for their... activities."

Looking at Henri, the eighteen-year-old advised, "That said, now that you're here, I will need you for something."

Then he continued with, "Angelito Jaime, the Hero of 1988, is dying due to a cancer that feeds on his Arms Master Survivability. His Noble Arm, a bamboo spear that can open portals wide enough to swallow Chinese ICBMs and spit them back at the Chinese heartland, is important to our war effort. Your own Noble Arm can turn the cancer into a normal one that can be taken care of through high-end radiotherapy. So what do you think of helping us in that regard? Is it within your remit as a volunteer?"

Ah~, never change, Ren Zhao; you never fail to be endlessly amusing~.

Wearing a coy smirk and slitted eyes squinted into easy smiles, Qingshe stood to the side, not quite separate from the majority of Task Force Obsidian but not close enough to say she was "grouped" with them more-so than the Qing Restoration Society members in the area. In this situation, after all, she was amongst people to whom she owed quite a bit more "official" loyalty than a collective national task force of debatable hierarchy and discipline.

Shooting Ren Zhao a cheeky side-eye, Qingshe chuckled quietly at his boasting. The self-proclaimed "Dragon of the Zodiac"... she couldn't say she entirely trusted his good intentions, no matter how rich that might be coming from herself. Oh, to be sure, he was a staunch ally, but Qingshe had no doubt Huo Ren's erstwhile brother was as much in this for his own reasons as she was... and with markedly more selfish motivations to boot. Justice... morality... ending China's present tyranny... restoring the Qing rule? The Snake quite doubted any of that actually mattered to Zhao. He was here for one reason as far as she was aware, and that was to take for himself what he'd been overlooked for in favor of Huo Ren. Prestige. Respect. Authority. Power.

He sure can 'talk the talk'... but how much of that QRS propaganda of his is just talk, I wonder~?

For all that she loved to rag on him internally, however, Qingshe didn't particular distrust Zhao... or at least not his commitment to the bit... for now. By this point, having thrown his lot in with the QRS and ASEAN, there was very little chance the prideful man would compromise that with betrayal. His defection was as genuine as Qingshe's had been; of that much, she was fairly certain. Trying to go turncoat all over again would not see him welcomed warmly, and the Snake quite doubted his former masters had anything kind planned for him if he tried to come crawling back. In short, Huo Zhao had made his bed, and he had no choice but to lie in it. Therefore, if nothing else, Qingshe could at least trust that he had the victory of the Qing Restoration Society in his best interests.

Qingshe's grin only widened, as Master Ren Zhao's little speech came to an end, and the Snake took the time to saunter past the bearded man with a toothy grin on her lips. "Oh~, it's most comforting to be back on the home front, Dragon~," she all but purred, golden eyes gleaming. "My my~, it does my heart wonders to be welcomed so warmly by Master~ Zhao, himself." The tease in her tone was subtle enough to at least not be construed as public mockery or overt disrespect, but there was no doubt that the Snake was making some form of continuation of perhaps overly familiar banter.

In the corner of her eye, Qingshe spied Noel drawing away from the group with Nico in tow, and she had to resist the urge to shake her head at the bits of conversation her sharp hearing picked up. She didn't get the sense that Nico would be particularly amendable to the less than subtle romantic overtures. Never mind that it was generally considered a poor idea to get "extensively entangled" with people of higher rank in any command structure, Qingshe would have recommended against it solely on the contextual merits of this individuals involved, just based on what she'd gathered about them so far.

More potentially immediately concerning than that impending social trainwreck, however, was the reminder that Nico had been exposed to the fell powers of the Downward Descent's leader. Based on what she'd seen of less fortunate victims of that madman -both pre and postmortem, "magic cancer" was certainly an appropriate way to put it. It was an affliction that apparently fed on the energy of Noble Arms, making treating it rather tricky by most supernatural healing methods, and Qingshe was reminded most immediately that she'd not actually had the chance to conduct a medical overview of Task Force Obsidian's members after the conclusion of the last mission.

She'd been at first far more preoccupied with dealing with the thunderstorm she'd inadvertently helped create, which largely consisted of mitigating the damage it would cause, raising shelters and giant lightning rods from her shadow around and above the evacuating team and their rescued hostages. Other than the cold from the rain and wind chill, she felt she'd done a decent enough job holding the line until the storm finally moved on and a proper evacuation was conducted.

Of course, even once that was done, she'd had other issues to concern herself with, like writing up her strategically redacted after-action report in a technically honest but ultimately self-flattering manner... and ensuring no-one they'd come to rescue died as a result of the supernatural weather. If even a single person perished due to the mere proximity of the clash of titans she'd participated in, well... Sure, she couldn't be held totally responsible, of course, but it wouldn't be a good look regardless and might give certain people annoying ideas about what they should try (and fail) to dictate as her limitations.

Still, most of the damage to lives and psyches had been done by Noel and Ai Chen, the latter of whom who was now well and truly dead, a charred, waterlogged corpse sitting in the Snake's shadow. If anything, despite the scale of things, it was a miracle that the Snake and Rooster's battle had somehow caused little to utterly negligible loss of life compared to Noel's wave of madness. Most of the collateral on Qingshe's end had been to the local ecosystem and weather, but such things would ultimately correct themselves in time.

Which was all to say, this lack of time to really breathe between the conclusion of the last mission and making landfall here in Mischief Reef had unfortunately left Qingshe with few chances to clean up several injuries that the team was still recovering from even now, injuries that made such a "vacation" as this more of a necessity than a luxury.

The Snake made a note to make some healing rounds as a high priority. No sense leaving things be, when her team could be fully enjoying their time here otherwise, unfettered by the weight of past battles. Amongst those, she placed an inspection of Nico quite highly in its own right, if for no other reason than she was confident in curing anything that might still ail him. After all, he'd spent enough time in her shadow already for her to get a body template to chew on. It was quite possible for her to completely rebuild his body from scratch if need be to purge him of any lingering curse from Superbia.

In the meanwhile, however, there was another matter she needed to take this opportunity to address...

"See you around, Dragon~. We should definitely catch up later." Waggling the fingers of one hand in farewell to Huo Zhao, Qingshe sauntered off, as Task Force Obsidian split up to explore the premises and engage in "vacationing" in each of their own ways.

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022 08:05 UTC+8

Now then... where oh where would he be on a day like this...?

Such were Qingshe's thoughts, as she traipsed about the island. Her target hadn't been in the places he'd usually be found in an "official" capacity for someone of his station, but a little asking around had given the Snake a few promising leads. After all, her target hardly had much need or apparent inclination to be subtle right here where they were ostensibly the most secure, and their position was such that someone was liable to be paying attention to their passage, no matter where they went.

Eventually -perhaps inevitably, however, her search finally led her out to one of the many beaches the island possessed. In the distance, across pale sands, sharp eyes spotted a familiar someone -none other than Sister Martha- sitting under a parasol... and someone no less recognizable standing next to her, swathed in frills and blue. Humming in the back of her throat, Qingshe ambled her way over, cocking a brow, as she caught the tail end of the two Arms Masters' discussion.

With her accelerated mental capacity and wireless connection, it took the Snake but moments to consult the internet for current events, and Qingshe had to restrain a frown at what she found. Preliminary US voter polling was not looking optimistic for ASEAN's interests in the war. If the US pulled out of both ASEAN and Ukraine after these midterms... Well, it wouldn't mean anything good. She could say that much with certainty. Of course, in principle, she actually agreed with an anti-war noninterference stance... In principle anyway. In practice, this little hiccup threatened to be highly inconvenient to her current interests, and it was all the more frustrating to know there was nothing to be done about it on her part, both practically in her physical incapacity to presently meaningfully interfere and ideologically in her personal unwillingness to intrude in humanity's self-determination... to a degree. There was little sense expressing despair over something she couldn't change yet -if at all.

Instead, as she reached Marta and Jin Li, Qingshe adopted a more firmly unperturbed smile, as she spoke up.

"Mah mah~, there's not much sense dwelling on things we cannot change, Young Emperor," she said to Jin Li, cocking a single amused brow at the way he was childishly doodling in the sand with his Noble Arm. The Snake of the Zodiac, both Chinese and QRS, was wearing her usual salacious black and white "dress" of a battlesuit like the casual wear she treated it as. She had no immediate plans to acquire any beachwear, but if the impulse struck her, she could always dip into her shadow for a change of attire. In the meanwhile, she was presently acting in a more official capacity as an Arms Master of the QRS, and that meant at least ostensibly dressing the part.

Folding her arms underneath her ample chest, Qingshe chuckled and sighed, briefly pausing to wistfully appreciate the glittering blue waves and the horizon on this warm sunny day, before returning her attention to the conversation at hand. "I prefer not to rely on miracles to attain victory. If this misfortune for our cause is imminent, then we should be preparing to adapt to the new status quo. With effort and ingenuity, I'm confident we can still prevail." One hand's fingers tapped a thoughtful rhythm upon her other elbow, as the Snake hummed in thought, before her lips pursed into a half-frown. "Speaking of... 'miracles', however, that brings me to a matter we must discuss: that being the apparent necessity of such absurdities in all of Task Force Obsidian's missions."

Eyeing Marta, Qingshe smiled apologetically. "I do apologize if this comes as a disturbance to your relaxation, but this matter is simply one that cannot wait, I think." She eyed Marta's bandaged arm and then blinked and smiled warmly. "Ah, I do apologize for not getting around to it, but if you're still recovering, I'd be more than happy to patch you up fully." She grinned and gave a small wink. "No sense leaving you injured on vacation, right~?"

Her gaze then flicked back to Jin Li. She began speaking in Mandarin. She wasn't entirely sure if Marta couldn't understand the language, and she wouldn't have entirely minded if she could in this case. But she was at least paying lip service to OPSEC. "This is a concern that I've had since the first day the TFO was created. No, rather, even before then; it was already apparent that this was an issue that somehow wasn't getting resolved. And even after I did my best to clandestinely plug the more... digital holes, the problem has yet persisted."

Frowning in truth now, Qingshe loosed a sigh through her nose. "There's really no kind way to put it. ASEAN's operation security is a dumpster fire. In every single mission I've been in with their Arms Master task force, without exception, the enemy has had some form of specific counter or trap prepared, and upon reflection, considering the odds, the latest mission only wasn't an unmitigated disaster due to my presence." Her expression darkened with distaste; as much as cutting loose could be fun, objectively speaking, she was no particular fan of being relied upon so heavily. That the odds were so long that her presence had been the only thing staving off a total defeat at the hands of Ai Chen and Huo Ren's artillery -not to mention Cao Bao’s apparent presence... It was not encouraging. "The last mission was the worst incident yet, and if the pattern holds, I'm only expecting even more effective traps in the future. We have a leak, a bad one, and unfortunately, I'm quite confident it's not a technological hole in ASEAN's OPSEC."

Her expression was serious now, Qingshe demonstrating little levity in this moment, a notable contrast to her usually almost whimsical behavior. There could be little doubt to those that had any extended exposure to her that this was a matter that genuinely had the Snake perturbed.

"It is my observation, in my official capacity as a QRS Special Liaison, that our allies are demonstrating a crucial lacking in matters of upholding their responsibilities in this alliance." A small pool of ooze rippled out from beneath the hem of her dress, extending forth a small cylindrical platform not more than 10 inches across. Atop that platform, there rested a black binder and -atop that- a rather bulky-looking USB device. Casting her gaze around to check that no-one other than Marta was nearby, Qingshe gestured to binder and USB, an indication for the QRS leader to take them. "This would be my present, unvarnished report on the events that have transpired so far... your eyes only for now, pending your personal choice of distribution."

She sighed and shook her head. "I realize this is not going through official channels, but I find myself with little choice in the matter to ensure our security. I do not know how deep the rabbit hole goes, but I'm confident that we have at least one traitor in a very high and very compromising position." Her expression darkened. "As things stand, we cannot trust the greater ASEAN alliance. Their failure to retain the element of surprise in any meaningful way is unsustainable. We have thankfully been succeeding in spite of this failure, of course, but I don't think I need to explain that this is not a good thing."

Closing her eyes, Qingshe inhaled slowly, held the breath for a steadying moment and then exhaled. "Whoever the traitor is, they have intimate oversight over ASEAN operations, particularly in matters of Arms Master deployment and most relevantly in regard to Task Force Obsidian, the place ASEAN is presently placing an... unfortunate amount of eggs in one basket." Shifting, Qingshe cupped her chin with one hand, brow furrowing, as her golden eyes opened into narrowed slits. "If the TFO falls, it will be not just a notable blow to ASEAN's effective power projection, but it will be a huge blow to morale. We already have far too few Arms Masters to spare compared to mainland China. To lose those gathered in Task Force Obsidian would destroy national confidence in the program."

Her frown deepening, Qingshe clicked her tongue. "I do not like to be in this position, but I can only make the recommendation -in my official capacity- that we internalize and segregate as much of our war efforts as possible, limiting our national coordination. As things stand, we must assume that any information shared with ASEAN is compromised. Any plan we make that they help execute must be assumed to be an impending disaster that will devolve into 'winging it'." Closing her eyes, the hand on her chin rose to massage the bridge of her nose in frustration.

Huffing, Qingshe shook her head and opened her eyes again, her expression firming resolutely. "Not to say we should simply 'make do' with this disastrous situation, of course. Just leaving a major traitor to their own devices cannot end well for us, no matter how well we personally internalize our OPSEC." Once Jin Li had taken the binder and USB stick -if he had indeed done so, Qingshe's shadow would fully retract beneath her dress again. "My Emperor, we must raise this matter with ASEAN somehow. This traitor must be dealt with if we are to win this war, especially with the impending withdrawal of the United States's aid. We cannot afford to be getting attacked internally as much as externally. However..."

She raised one finger, her expression concerned. "We must consider carefully: do we raise this matter loudly or quietly? If we go loud, the traitor may become more cautious, more discreet. It may take longer -take critical time- to weed them out. Yet, at the same time, going quiet means we are right back where we started. The very fact that we do not know who the traitor is to begin with raises the issue of who we can possibly trust in a high position to help organize efforts to oust the cancer."

The Snake frowned, raising another finger. "Not to mention, there's no guarantee this is the only major traitor. Furthermore, we've had so many 'volunteers'-" She carefully did not glance Marta's way when saying so. She held no ill will towards the self-proclaimed nun, of course, but in principle, she did not find her concern invalid in a generalized sense. "-from all walks of life joining Obsidian, all of them accepted into the fold far too easily. I understand that times are desperate, that we need warm empowered bodies, but who's to say these volunteers aren't enemy plants in their own right? Anyone could be a leak, but I suppose if there's any consolation, those with access to the sort of strategic information necessary to easily set such targeted traps for Obsidian at least must rank above the bottom floor 'volunteers' start at."

At that, Qingshe paused, finally having gotten this long-standing building concern off her chest. She could think of no-one better (though perhaps not quite as ideal) to go to first about this matter with her receipts to back up her conclusions than the young Emperor of the Qing Restoration Society. If there was anyone she could be absolutely certain was at least trustworthy (no matter what level his suitability for his unexpected position), it would be the leader of the QRS. There was no way the QRS would have lasted this long if he were a traitor, and so, keeping in mind her own technically overriding obligations to the QRS over ASEAN as a whole, the choice was clear.

She waited for Jin Li's response.

Callie flopped down on the bunk, something between a groan and a growl scraping through her teeth. A few seconds passed as she took in the empty space of the barracks room – utilitarian, walls bare except for a desk pushed into the corner and a few photos attached to the wall above it with half-peeling tape, presumably of the families of the soldiers who were once stationed here.

Before they were swamped by a tsunami and then the remainder shot or captured in the confusion, of course.

She remembered a man on the deck, twitching, seawater dribbling from his mouth.

Bile rose in Callie’s throat; she forced her mind away. She’d never been terribly good at meditation – keeping her thoughts clear always felt far near-impossible in comparison to just focusing them on something else. Unfortunately, the place they turned to was little better.

In reserve. God damn it!

Callie hadn’t strictly been absent for the duration of the battle at the Jinghong Dam but, in truth, she might as well have been – kept on one of the rearward boats, hidden, as a last card in TFO’s deck to turn the tide or, more likely, hunt down enemy VIPs as they tried to flee the scene… They hadn’t counted on their opponents having teleportation of their own; Huo Ren and his cohort had already vanished by the time that she was let loose and while evacing PoWs was unequivocally good and helpful…

Myron and his ‘emotional distress’ talk, it has to be… I performed well the previous mission – there was nothing else to recommend against me. Ignoring my getting portal-trapped, her thoughts very helpfully conceded – but I didn’t tell anyone about that, they would have had no way of knowing, surely, maybe barring Qingshe she was there would she have seen OH GOD NO –

She forced that train of thought from her mind, too. Took a breath. Okay, so maybe things are affecting you. That’s fine. That’s normal for a soldier, let alone one who just discovered that her father… She winced at the cascade of thoughts that resulted. So that you’ve got to deal with… One thing at once. You wanted to be sure of who he was – now you are. Are you going to confront Mum about it? She pursed her lips. Shook her head. It’d just worry her even more than she is already. I work this out on my own…

So. Do I want to go after him?

What she’d told Myron had been truth, after a fashion. Intellectually, she saw no need. It didn’t affect her that she happened to share DNA with someone possibly not dead on the other side of the globe; if he happened to cross onto her side of the globe, she’d want to know about him but there was still no need to know him.

Emotionally?

She hated it. The way that the Hammer lieutenant had talked spoke of knowledge of her capabilities; the way he instantly leapt on weakness in her use of them demonstrated it, beyond any kind of doubt she might have had. I’m trying to avoid notoriety… And now, quite possibly, there’s an indefinite number of people out there who know more or less what I can do and exactly how to counter it. Callie felt a shiver run up her spine, feeling exposed for the first time in years. And I can’t do anything about it. I have a job to do here. I…

She let out the breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. Right. Job. Do what I came here to do.

Callie sat up on the bunk, swinging her legs up and out to let them hang over the side. She felt for the thread in her mind. She tugged.

And then it tugged back. Callie stiffened, fists clenching, as she felt it slithering through her head. ‘Spindle’, as they were codenamed, could not take away memories – the CIA would hardly cripple their own operatives so – but they did access them, and accessing memories always leaves them altered. Callie ground her teeth. Even for one who could be as focused as she, she still didn’t notice anything changing… The absence unnerved her more than any perception of it ever might.

Time passed. Just how much was difficult to ascertain, in the quiet of that room, cast in the artificial white of the strip lights on the ceiling above.

Then: The model student as ever, aren’t you?

Callie relaxed her fists as the sensation ceased. Clenched them again. Relaxed. “Glad you think so,” she murmured, bitterness in her voice, eyes boring into the wall. Did you know? About Kenrick?

A few moments passed, no doubt as some file was searched or clearance was checked. Suspicions, nothing more. By the time they became firm, you were already deployed and distracting you would be counterproductive. If we knew there were likely to be Hammer-affiliated antiquarians in theatre, you’d have been first to know.

Callie nodded, gaze still on the wall. A satisfying enough answer… Assuming that they were telling her the truth.

Because lying risks your operational performance and we can’t have that. Hey, listen, she felt resonating in her mind even as panic flashed across it, don’t worry. You’re not going to defect because you had one intrusive thought. Believe me, I know what a would-be double agent’s thoughts feel like and yours aren’t those.

Callie forced herself to calm. You didn’t know they were here. That’s worrying.

You’re right. From what you saw, they had a good number of their elites on that ship, so it’s possible they’re minimally integrated into the actual command structure, but even then – you shouldn’t have been the first to know about them. I’ll pass it up the chain.

You think the higher-ups will send more operatives to the theatre?

As a telepath, ‘Spindle’ normally kept their thoughts disciplined; as a CIA telepath, it was compulsory. Thus Callie’s surprise when she practically felt them grimace on the other end. Guessing that’s a ‘No’, then.

How closely have you been following domestic politics, Augur?

Callie blinks. Trying to avoid it. Why?

Well, midterm polling’s been good for the President.

Oh, God.

Mmm. The Director’s trying to hold out but it looks like we’ll be facing down another ‘American Finance Initiative’ soon – maybe even worse. You’re staying where you are, don’t worry about that, but don’t expect backup any time soon.

Right. Right. Callie nodded – finally, a firm answer to comprehend, internalise and integrate! Directives?

Watch Myron. He –

Oh – yeah, so what was that all about? Why wasn’t the information on my mum falsified – I made it very clear that she needed to be kept out of all this!

Because there wasn’t enough time to audit the full capability of the Philippine army’s Antiquarian recruitment before you were inserted. It was –

Like hell! They needed anyone they could get – if you didn’t remember, Myron himself is a former terrorist!

Translator was a terrorist who was a known quantity to them. You weren’t. All it would have taken was an E- or D-rank diviner looking over your file and you could have lost your cover and any influence you might have had. This was the safest option. A pause. Your mother is safe, Augur. We have security protocols in place for her, just as we have them for the family of all our operatives.

Right. Right. I’m sorry. Callie sighed. Directives?

‘Spindel’’s thoughts were calm as ever. Monitor Translator. His influence is unclear – ensure that it is kept in check. Monitor Jester. Determine whether he is just a figurehead. If he isn’t, determine whether he can be trusted; if he can, we will authorise you to make contact. And monitor Cassandra. She’s too powerful an antiquarian and her loyalties too obscure to ignore her – just, given your memories, avoid any entanglements that could be turned to her –

“Yes!” Callie yelped, then jumped at the sudden sound of her own voice as it echoed in the room. Placing a hand on her forehead for calm, she performed a quick scan – the room was still empty. Yes. Understood. Thank you – directives received. Over and out.

Over and out, Augur.

Callie felt the subtle aperture in her mind close. She let her limbs go slack; her palms, barely supporting her weight, sunk into the mattress below.

Right. Well. Least now I know exactly what I’m meant to be doing.

She drummed her fingers. Then sat up.

Well, no rest for the righteous. We were meant to be relaxing, weren’t we? Hmm. Need to make myself visible.

Let’s see if anyone on this island can lend me a surfboard.

Intermission Three - All Saints' Day in Mischief Reef

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022 08:10 UTC+8

Jin Li changed what he was doodling from a random picture to a rough map of Southeast Asia, before saying, "My tutors told me that ASEAN, even after 1988, was never meant to be a military alliance - It was an economic, cultural, and political one where every member had loose obligations towards each other and had clauses against interfering in each others' affairs. If anything, it's a miracle that this pact lasted against the PLA and its forces even with our help... Especially as two ASEAN countries, which are not in Civil War, are inclined to side with the so-called People's Republic of China over, say, Vietnam and Thailand."

He pointed to the doodles of Laos and Cambodia and said, "Laos owes China money and has its series of hydroelectric dams on the Mekong built with Chinese help in 'better times'. Cambodia, meanwhile, is a poor country that has accepted immense Chinese investments as late as 2020, just one year before the war. Its King is hostile to China, but its Prime Minister and large portions of the army see it as a counterweight to Vietnamese and Thai influence. You can see where I or my tutors are going, right?"

The boy sighed, then continued, "Not just that, but while First Lieutenant Alonso is loyal to his country and anything that keeps him away from that 'Dragon of Thirst'," Jin Li chuckled at that, "the Government of National Salvation he serves is a patchwork of factions in a civil war with the very people who invited the PLA into ASEAN territory in the first place - The core is held together by genuine patriotism but everyone outside it with any bit of power is an opportunist, a traitor, or potentially both."

Pointing with his stick to the crude picture of the Philippines on the sand, Jin spoke, "The Philippine Government of National Salvation came to power because the President-Elect was assassinated by the previous President, who ran for Vice President to circumvent their Constitution's laws restricting a President to one term, and that caused a constitutional crisis and civil war. Not only that, but the President-Elect's sister and mother sided against their dead son to stand with China, and their families have a lot of clout in the northernmost Philippines and some of the central islands, plus the far south."

He then looked directly at Qingshe and said, "Reports emerged that several collaborationist militias had been preparing in Lubao, Pampanga, to ambush the Philippine Army and Marines in Lingayen should they be forced to retreat from the beaches and city. These are in turn led by wealthy landowners and scions of powerful political clans. The victory in Lingayen Beach was a miracle because it stopped the PRC from winning the war outright... Even then, Huo Ren has been interested in certain people in the subsequent Task Force formed after that - Even if we plug up the leak, that interest won't end; I and Ren Zhao have agreed on this that he must be eliminated."

Nico knew there were people who deserved the moments of brevity more than he did, and that taking a break in the middle of a war was not a great look, but he didn’t care much. If anything, the volunteer felt like sleeping for a week. Between using well over all of his strength fighting Superbia, the pain in his foot, and the general stress of the last 24 hours, the beach that Task Force Obsidian was staying on felt like a gift from the heavens.

His foot was partially healed, but still complete agony to put his weight on for anything more than a few minutes. When Lieutenant Alonso came to him about having a meal, he had to decline. As much as he didn’t want to be rude or mean to the child, that was the reason he said no. Aside from that, he didn’t quite like desserts anyway. Most were too sweet for his tastes. And try, he was grateful for Henri interrupting the conversation. But that didn’t last.

”I think the people who can do something need some sense. The prison break was proof we need some serious help. Just hoping your homeland’s bigwigs have some sense.” Nico shifted a bit on the ground as he spoke, wincing as some pressure was applied to his bad foot. Even then, he held his tongue, refusing to voice his pain in a disruptive manner, turning to look at Noel

”As for the original questions that you asked me, Lieutenant. First, no more cancer, just waiting for my foot to heal after I burned it out. And for the second, no. Simple as that. He tapped his good foot on the ground, sighing a bit as he looked at the sky. This morning sun felt…like home. Maybe it was the sea breeze or the warmth of Mischief Reef, but it made him just that bit more comfortable.

Sister Marta Rocha

Mischief Reef/Đá Vành Khăn/Panganiban Reef - 11/01/2022

Marta just sat on the beach towel, seemingly paying close attention to the complex conversations and strategic considerations Jin Li and Qingshe discussed. In truth, she was deep in thought when the latter had arrived, considering how she felt about the political situation.

She had her own opinion about miracles And what it meant to hope for the miraculous in a world already steeped in impossible powers. But can one expect a miracle? She didn't think so. A miracle should defy sense and explanation - even that of Arms Masters. Hope for it all you want, but is it really a miracle if it can be expected?

What man calls a miracle must be wrought by man. Are not our hands here on earth, by design, to act as we will and wish? That's probably what she'll tell them.

...well, if the conversation goes in that direction, anyway. Marta isn't sure if they realize she doesn't speak Mandarin, but the chance to point that out has passed, and things are becoming slightly... awkward...

Cristina
Abandoned Training Center

For a while Cristina just ignored him and continued letting out her rage. In her mind was a rebuke to every statement Han Rui gave.

They do make miracles but it would take one mistake for the group to fall apart.

She managed to hold against that man but she knew her sister, what she did won’t even slow her down.

Ask God? She had long stopped believing in him, after all he did nothing when she was shivering in that dark cold place hoping that someone would stop that nightmare. Nobody heard her calls for help.

It also felt wrong to ask God for this, it would make her an ungrateful bitch.

But when he mentioned the untapped potential of Noble Arms, she stopped. Sinagtala has been her reliable companion for this journey, it helped her survive situations that quite frankly she had no business of even stepping in.

But his words made her wonder, had she released the true potential of her Noble Arm?

The pulsating power that she is now noticing tells her otherwise.

She failed to notice Han Rui leaving as she became engrossed at the idea of strengthening herself.

Yet she doesn’t know how to.

She left the training area, with a new purpose on her steps. She needs to find the snake, if there’s someone who can help her about this, it’s her.
