Faith felt sick, but the adrenaline wasn't letting her dwell on it. She had her phone in hand, flicking through some of the information they'd posted to everybody's phone while she listened to the briefing. She was completely out of her league when it came to three of the members. One of them, however, stood out to her. Kintsugi. Faith wondered if her gift would work on the monsters. They weren't human, but they were beings designed to follow orders telepathically. Would that make them more susceptible to her or less?

Faith agreed with the broad, discussed plan of her sneaking in and convincing the hostages, but she wouldn't exactly be able to sneak them back out. The others would need to open a path, if not outright defeat Blackburn. She did notice something in the schematics, and that was that the ground floor had a PA system in the central office that may just about be audible on the second floor as well, possibly. She could use that to get the hostages out easily if she could get them down that for this the first place. And as the others had their earpieces in, she could use it to confuse enemies too.

Faith noticed that Ashley seemed a lot more jittery than usual, flickering in and out of existence as her clones popped from one seat to the other, before she disappeared from the transport entirely when they were close enough to the bank. Faith hoped she was going to be okay.

They were finally dropped off, and Faith saw the bank, and the carnage that already existed. Were these twisted metal animals the constructs? She gulped. If anything went wrong with her 'plan', these things would rip her apart very fast and very easily. She needed to be careful.

Muninn landed besides the group, and Faith noticed that one of the first things he did was to look down at her. She gave him a nod, and tried to smile, hoping that the gesture would be reassuring. It was clear that she still needed some reassuring herself. Shattercrash immediately addressed Muninn with whatever the opposite of a reassuring speech was, before leaving the group. Not long after, the sounds of banging and crashing would be heard.

She heard Ethan speak next, and his deductions made sense. Plus, with his gift, they were most likely the truth. The hostages would be kept higher up. Faith didn't know how she'd be able to go about sneaking up there. She might have better luck slipping in the wake of the strike team. That way, she'd have somebody to defend her. She had been trained how to fight, but that wouldn't help much against a machine gun, or any Blackburn's gifts, if she got caught. Muninn set off into the air, before she'd hear his voice through the earpiece. He offered to give people lifts. Decree shook her head, and tapped her own earpiece as she started briskly walking to the entrance Shattercrash had bust in.

"That's okay. There's no way into the building that high unless we break a window, and that might attract attention. Could you look out for the hostages and if you see them, let us all know as soon as possible?"

Decree then adjusted her earpiece to Tandem's frequency.

"Tandem. If you find the hostages, or any members of Blackburn, could you please let us know where they are? Oh, and please be careful."

She knew she'd just spoken a command, but Tandem had her earpiece in. Besides, Decree hoped she'd keep those words to heart anyway. And this was it. She knew that even the slightest hesitation about using her gift on real people today could get them, or herself, killed.

Finally making her way into the large hole that was once the main entrance, Decree saw the carnage inside the bank. The debris, and bullet holes. And she froze. She...she didn't want to go up to the next floor. There might be a member of Blackburn up there. All the bravery she though she had outside was gone. She was scared.

It only took around ten minutes for them to be loaded up and driven to the city bank. They were briefed in great detail on the way there and given a few suggestions on how to run the operation, especially since civilians were being used as hostages. Richter listened without really paying much attention. Not outwardly, at least. He wasn't stupid enough to completely ignore their advice, just kind of. If nothing else though, they were right about one thing; Kintsugi's constructs wouldn't last more than a touch against him, nor would the Cape himself. If only he was allowed to.

Well, anyway, he was still glad their first mission wasn't something boring.

The fact that Blackburn carried around firearms didn't bother him one bit. Guns were only useful if you could hit your target, and it wasn't like he was a stranger to the dangers of a firefight, though this particular experience was new. Usually, he wasn't on this side of it. His power was pretty helpful against weapons too, if all else failed. The advice to treat the gang as if they were going for the kill gave him the makings of an idea. He wondered if he could use that as an excuse....

Hm. That was an idea that required a bit more thought.

Before Richter could decide on a course of action, he noticed something odd. The clone girl's.... clones looked like they were glitching for some unexplained reason. One second they were there and the next, they were gone. Over and over. She didn't seem to be taking the situation very well now they were here. Considering she'd been practically buzzing with excitement back at the HQ, it probably wasn't the robbery that bothered her. In that case, it was most likely the hostages that did it. He wasn't sure why, but she was obviously recalling some pretty bad memories. They had to be bad to evaporate her enthusiasm like that. It was the fastest drop in mood he'd ever seen.

Speculating would only get him so far. At this point, he'd have more success just–

Oh. She was gone.

And so was the pink menace. Rushing ahead without backup probably wasn't the best idea, but he wasn't going to be the one to tell her that. Someone who cared more would do that.

With a shrug, Richter climbed out of the vehicle and briefly surveyed the area. The bank's facade was bustling with activity, and he meant that in the loosest sense of the world. Everywhere he looked was filled with police cars and policemen idling around doing fuck all, and pedestrians doing even less. What a useless bunch they were. His eyes wandered up the building; twenty-five enormous stories of glass and concrete. It was one of the biggest buildings he'd ever seen, but he did have to wonder why exactly a bank had 25 floors. Like, what did they even use them all for? It was an utterly irrelevant question but it nagged at him all the same.

Richter's thoughts were interrupted by someone saying something about the hostages.

Oh, right. Hostages.

The grump shared the information his power had provided. It had a lot of assumptions, but it wasn't like he had anything to add at the moment. The hostages being held on a higher floor, if true, was potentially problematic. Getting into the building and through most obstacles was easy enough, but going up? That was a bit harder. The rat-bird offered to carry some of them with him, but he didn't even think about accepting. Not because he couldn't get in from up there, but because he didn't trust it to carry him anywhere.

His eyes trailed up to the highest point of the bank.... Yeah, there was no chance he was getting up there any other way. He wasn't that good. Not yet.

With a sigh, Richter pressed his palm to the front of the bank and focused his senses on his surroundings. The great thing about vibrations was that they were everywhere. Literally. He couldn't focus on everything on a floor at once, but searching for the movements of a human being, even if subdued, wasn't an issue. Any more than that and everything would just start becoming incomprehensible. He hadn't had the chance to practise much yet.

He stepped back from the wall and looked up once again. Well, that confirmed the hostages weren't down there at least. They still had to actually find them though. With that thought in mind, he finally entered the bank, or at least what was left of it. Shattercrash sure did a number on the place. He nonchalantly stepped on shards of broken glass, leaving behind tiny piles of dust in his wake.

Richter glanced over to Decree, who all of a sudden wasn't moving anymore. It was ironic that she'd stopped dead in her tracks almost immediately after telling the clone girl to be careful.

Usually, he wouldn't care what she did but this situation wasn't exactly what he'd call "regular". Getting people killed because you weren't prepared was a weak excuse. All she needed was a light touch to jolt her into action, and since he was the closest to her right now, he decided to take it upon himself to do so. The slightest miscalculation on his part would kill her, but nobody needed to know that.

With more care than anyone could know, Richter flicked Decree on the forehead.

"Pull yourself together, durak."

Being teleported directly to the hostages meant that Tandem was treated to a sight that only Muninn would've had a chance to see from outside. And even then, the fly-by didn't truly do the scene justice. She was on the very top floor of the bank, and sure enough, there were a few dozen people huddled in one corner of what seemed to be a ruined floor for cubicles. Computers were trashed, desks, plastic partitions and fake potted plants were in a heap off to one side, and the halogen lights in the ceiling were a wreck. Some of them were spilled out across the floor, mingling with a finely scattered layer of broken glass. But Tandem's attention wouldn't be grabbed by the many office workers huddled together out of fear. The first thing she'd note would likely be the liquified puddles of silvery liquid that dotted the floor. It was like someone had spilled mercury everywhere, and it hadn't spread past a few feet in each spot.

The second thing she would notice would be the hostages quietly pleading with her to get the hell out.

"No- No! Leave! They aren't hurting us! They'll kill us if they see you!"

"You'll wake it up! He'll be back any second!"

"Please, you'll get us hurt!"

They whispered, frantically, as if something was watching them. Tandem, however, didn't have time to question them or even look around much before something stomped its way around the corner. It was no shorter than eight feel tall, and a humanoid shape. It was a construct created by Kintsugi's power, which absorbed the matter from underneath its footsteps as it came into view. Shreds of plastic plants meant to give this soulless building a semblance of personality poked out through its stony, concrete-clad form. Though it did not have a proper face, it shrieked at Tandem with a sound akin to sand in a blender. The puddles of liquid metal began to shake and ripple.

And then the construct charged forth.

As Keystone took stairs outside to get up higher, his power would tell him that there was a flaw in the fire escape. It was solid steel, six inches thick at every possible spot one could measure, but it had been compromised because being here on these stairs did not mean he was avoiding conflict. If he stopped and paid attention, he would note little flecks of silverly metal splattered across the railings. The higher up he went, the more of it he would see. This was, in a manner of speaking, a problem. It meant that Ironsides had managed to spread his influence across this area as well.

But something wasn't adding up here. Blackburn hadn't hit the building that long ago. It was true that they had managed to get the hostages in line alarmingly fast, but that was normal. They were Blackburn, they were professionals. Working quickly and efficiently was part of their job description. But if Keystone tried to find an exploitable flaw in the distribution of Ironsides' metal, he find nothing. Blackburn were good at what they did, but powers behaved a certain way no matter what. And ordinarily, Ironsides wasn't known to have this much influence over an area in this little amount of time...

Taking to the air was a wise decision for Muninn. Circling around the building, he could see through the windows well enough to get a clear, albeit two-dimensional lay of the land. At least half a dozen floors were completely whited out, their windows smeared by a silvery metal that glared against Muninn's avian eyes. Above those floors were exactly three that had been overtaken by a small horde of monsters. They were Kintsugi's work, and resembled twisted, messy works of art carved from wood by an amateur. They were hideous things, and Muninn could see that they resembled the same husks that his team saw littering the ground outside the bank. Only these were moving, where as the previous ones were dead on the ground. If he looked closely enough, he'd see a construct looking remarkably different from them on the top floor, about to flatten Tandem like a pancake!

Or, he might see the silhouette of someone moving down the stairwells at an alarming pace. As if they had somewhere to be.

An assault rifle lay on the floor, having clattered away towards the entrance in the heat of battle. Richter and Decree could see Shattercrash trading blows with the Blackburn member known as Ironsides. He wore an ugly costume reminiscent of patchwork metal and leather. His body rippled with layers of liquid metal, eating up the worst of Shattercrash's punches, which let off vibrant explosions of pink sparks with each swing. Ironsides was taller than her, and looked to be a bit on the heavy side. Though, it might have simply been his power beefing him up. The two were in what seemed to be a boxing match, where Shattercrash hit fast and hard, but Ironsides hit slow and hard.

Shattercrash was able to dodge his punches, and she was hitting him way more than her. But she didn't seem to be doing much damage.

"Give it up, brat!" He shouted, his voice like a watery roar. "Can't win 'em all!"

"WATCH ME!!!" Shattercrash channeled her power into both of her fists, and ducked under another one of Ironsides' swings. She jumped up and clapped him across both of his ears. The force reverberated through his "helmet" and caused him to stumble backwards. The attack shook the ground beneath Decree and Richter's feet.

Shattercrash leapt backwards towards them both as Ironsides writhed on the ground. "Get out of your head right the fuck now, Decree!" she jabbed. "You're in the big leagues now. You freeze up, you fucking die! You come in without a plan, that's one thing- But when you start, you don't stop 'til it's over!"

"Pretty sure I blew his eardrums. He's gonna be feeling that for a bit, but something's wrong here. He's too damn strong right now- His power takes time to ramp up, and he's ramped up too fucking fast for the amount of time he's had control here." She sounded calm, in the sense that all three of them were in the eye of a tornado.

"There should be a PA system around here you can try your powers on! Move your ass so I can cover you! Richter, you want to try fucking up the big guy?"

As Ethan climbed higher and higher in the fire escape, the areas where the stairwell was compromised became more apparent by the second. Small flakes of silver, almost liquid metal were splattered across the railing and stairs, becoming more prominent and difficult to avoid with each story he climbed. Ethan wasn't a mover in a direct sense, but he knew how to place his body in just the right positions to avoid touching the liquid. Thankfully the individual puddles didn't seem to expand past a few feed in diameter, but considering the size of the fire escape, that didn't exactly leave much room to maneuver.

Too much spread, doesn't make sense with previous reports. Should take at least an hour for it to get this far down if it started at the top floor. Ironside located somewhere other than top floor? Unlikely. Climbing the elevator shaft is impossible. Main stairwell also likely shut down with liquid metal. Elevator shaft too dangerous to climb, can fall to death or be destroyed by a Sundown gravity well. Spread is far too fast paced, indicates some preparation or outside assistance. Possible trump support? Consider-

Ethan cupped his head in one hand, pausing at a corner as he wrestled with the constant flow of information. He had never been 'on the field' with his power before, and it seemed to kick into overdrive with the stress and conflict of the situation, overfeeding him with information that was unnecessary. Every glance around him told him the errors in architecture, the points that were coated in the liquid metal stood out like neon lights to his vision, making them almost impossible to ignore. The parts where the metal soaked into the stairwell, melding with supports and bolts, was especially concerning.

The short amount of reading Ethan did on the ride over here said that Ironside took quite some time to fully contaminate an area - he had only been here a dozen or two minutes, and had already filled several floors of this massive building with his metal. Ethan was too distracted to think on it deeply, constantly looking up to make sure Champion wasn't running down the stairs to drop kick his head off, or Ironside wasn't about to teleport behind him and push him over the railing. But he had a few guesses about what was happening. The most likely situation was that Blackburn arrived some time ago, subtly infested the area, and then launched the heist... but that wouldn't explain why they haven't done that in all their previous jobs.

Could also be any other number of reasons - a trump they recently hired for this gig is empowering him, maybe they commissioned some kind of power enhancer from Chemtrail. Hell, Ironside might have just second triggered and gotten a faster ramp up period out of it.

Doesn't matter. Not enough information to guess on the why - just need to focus on the facts right now. Ethan tapped the side of his helmet, talking over the channel as continued walking around each puddle in his ascent.

"Lot more metal here than I expected - I'm thinking something is boosting Ironside up more than usual. Maybe a trump, tinker tech enhancements or something. Hard to narrow it down with my power being distracted and pointing out every puddle to me. Just be careful if you guys see him, and watch where you step. If Tandem is free, covering the metal in containment foam would be smart."

Ethan didn't know if Ironside had some kind of Thinker perception towards his puddles, but it would make sense - a teleporter usually has some indication of where they are teleporting too, so having awareness around his 'waypoints' would make sense. Ethan was just kind of hoping it relied on touching the puddles, rather than just being around it.

Ethan was making surprising progress - already about halfway up the building, and not a parahuman in sight. A crashing sound somewhere below made Ethan pause, but a few questions towards his power helped him narrow it down to either being Richter, Shattercrash, or both. Ethan stayed where he was for a second, catching his breath as he ran through the worst case scenarios.

Kintsugi was most likely with the hostages since he was a liability in a direct fight, and his minions were probably very capable of keeping the hostages in check. At worst, a construct or two might come down the stair well, and considering the usual intelligence of Master minions, they would probably be easy to evade, even with the tight quarters.

Ironside was likely fighting down below with Shattercrash or Richter, since he was probably the only member of Blackburn that could tank a direct hit from either of them. His power allowed him to teleport anywhere he pleased though, so he could appear behind Ethan the second he let his guard down.

Champion was unaccounted for, but would perform very well in the narrow fire escape. She could definitely beat Ethan in a prolonged fight, but her power set was at least something he could try to fight against. Feint and bait, rely on her overconfidence. She'll crush you if she gets the chance, but taking advantage of the environment could let you evade her or knock her down the stair well. Stay at a distance, don't let her touch you, find-

Sundown was the worst outcome - if she launched one of her orbs in here, it would probably destroy the entire fire escape. Nothing to do there, juts run or die. Shoot her with your crossbow before she can attack, throw a knife to distract her and then pepper spray her eyes. She won't attack if she can't see, too much risk-

Ethan kept moving, his movements almost like a dance as he carefully stepped around each puddle, hand only brushing the railing when he needed to make the occasional leap over a larger pool of metal. His hand over over each of his weapons, weighing the options with his power before eventually settling on the pepper spray. It could debilitate anyone except a Kintsugi construct, and he'd be able to drop it and pull out a knife quickly after.

Faith could see that there was a fight happening in front of her, but she couldn't process association. It felt like she was watching TV. Even after Richter flicked her head and Shattercrash shouted at her, it took a moment for her to come back to the here and now. There wasn't time to be scared. She turned and headed to the row of teller counters. She very briefly considered picking up the assault rifle, but guns made her very uncomfortable. She didn't think she'd be able to pull the trigger even if she knew bullets wouldn't be able to hurt her target. So she made her way past the gun, leaving Richter and Shattercrash to fight Ironsides.

Shattercrash had gotten the same idea that Decree herself had thought up in the van; using the teller's PA system with her power. All of their group were wearing their earpieces which meant that Decree's commands should only affect Ironsides. It did make her feel less special that somebody else figured that out. Likely, everybody else had figured that out. Most of them had some history in violent, high-stress situations. She was one of the only members who had not. She was not smarter than them, and their experience trumped hers. She wasn't special. As much as she hated using her powers, they were all she had going for her in this team. She needed to get very comfortable using them very fast.

The doors intol the staff area were, naturally for a bank, locked and very secure. Luckily, one or two of the counters had broken glass from the mercanary groups' initial invasion. Decree carefully crawled in through the broken glass, and looked around at this room. The PCs and tills were useless to Decree right now. What wasn't useless was the PA system's microphone, and a CCTV screen showing multiple camera angles of the lobby including a few where she could see Ironsides, Shattercrash and Richter. Just then, Keystone's voice came through her earpiece, and therefore probably everybody's.

"Lot more metal here than I expected - I'm thinking something is boosting Ironside up more than usual. Maybe a trump, tinker tech enhancements or something. Hard to narrow it down with my power being distracted and pointing out every puddle to me. Just be careful if you guys see him, and watch where you step. The other two in the foyer would have heard that too. Didn't change that the fight was going to be a lot more dangerous than the group initially anticipated. They'd need Decree's help. She knew that her power had much less effect on people who didn't trust her, so telling him not to attack or to stand down wouldn't work. But commands he'd want to follow anyway, even if, no, especially if he wasted precious time and brainpower to resist them, would make all the difference. She waited to see what Ironsides would do now he was faced with two powerful opponents. From what Richter did to that coin, Decree knew that he couldn't be underestimated here.

Oh, well that was bad.

Looking through it, nearly half a dozen floors were seemingly completely caked in that strange, silvery substance that he knew from their brief briefing was from Ironsides. In other words, those floors were effectively inaccessible without some serious work, which was far from ideal. Above those were floors that, while clear of any of that metallic sludge, had an equally hostile environment; swarms of those disturbing constructs stalked the top three floors, oddly resembling some kind of poorly-structured woodworking pieces. He was planning on relaying some of this information back, but two even more vital pieces of info hit him in this precise moment.

The first thing he noticed, and the one that concerned him far more, was the sight of Tandem in the top floor, and getting a better look as his vision paused on the frame before him, he caught a better view of a gathering of civilians in the corner of the cubicle-ridden floor, clearly trembling and anxious. He could relate, though given he was one of the people expected to get them out of this...That probably wasn't a good thing. More pressing, however, was the rise of another of those constructs, though this one was...Different. More imposing, built from sterner stuff, and even more importantly, with an awful screech that he could even make out while outside the building (thanks, enhanced hearing...), it barreled down on the slightly Ward. That was bad. Really bad. Like, really, really, really-!

His eyes caught something else; something so off-putting that it ever-so-briefly tore his attention from the threat at hand. Someone was charging their way down the stairwell towards the base floor. That was odd. If it was an escaped hostage, he imagined they'd be more cautious, if only due to paranoia and fright in the situation, but that silhouette pressed forward with determination; he could tell just from how they moved. So that was probably another member of Blackfire, right?! Crap, crap, crap...He should warn the team about that, but, the top floor...

Feeling as if he were about to choke on this indecision, his body had already reached the conclusion he sought. The stranger could be handled later, but right now, someone was in danger this very moment. Not to mention, the hostages also seemed to be cooped up there, which only added more incentive to this maneuver. His massive body pulled back in the air, gaining distance away from the building. They'd brought up before that the windows were reinforced, and the last thing he wanted was to go full-throttle and somehow get stopped by something as simple as glass. So, when he'd built up enough distance, he rocketed forward, growing momentum as the air current around him rushed violently, and in the last few moments, he tucked his wings behind his back, so as to avoid the fallout of the glass, and fully turned his body, going talons-first through the window.

For the onlookers that were Tandem and the hostages, it all happened so fast. One moment, there was a golem of stone and plastics threatening to crush the young girl, and with it, any hope of their rescue. The next...It got dark, unnaturally so, as darkness descended on one side of the room, as if the sun had decided to call it quits early today. Then came the violent shattering of glass as a colossal figure blasted into frame, small glittering shards of the windows flying haphazardly through the air and a massive gust of wind from the approach of this behemoth bird-thing, and in that very same moment, only Tandem was close enough to fully make out what happened.
In a blink-and-you-miss-it maneuver, one of Muninn's taloned feet latched onto the construct, gripping and tearing into it with ease. They could already cut into concrete before he'd nearly tripled in size, so it was no problem here, but he wasn't after nearly carving this thing apart. No, in that same breath of time, he pushed his massive form out of the new hole where the windows had once sat, and with all the force he could muster, flung the awful thing down, down, down to the ground, plummeting past floor after floor with violent velocity. It might've been made of stern stuff, but it wouldn't make it out of that.

After all the excitement, Muninn made it back into the top floor, though careful to position himself so as not to make contact with the small puddles of silvery liquid he'd noticed in his initial assault. His giant, pearlescent eyes landed firstly on Tandem as he spoke, his voice barely a whisper despite his gargantuan size. "I-Is...Is everyone alright...?" His gaze still lay squarely on his teammate for a moment, before quickly panning over to the civilians inside. Though, sadly, in the heat of it all, his mind had currently completely blanked on warning the others about that mystery figure heading downstairs...

Tandem was not having a good time. Most of the time having multiple trains of thought was great – planning was so much easier when you had three times the minds to work with and bounce ideas off – but then there were the situations where having three minds was decidedly less fun. Being on the verge of total breakdown, the panic from each mind feeding into and amplifying that of the other two, was definitely fell into the less fun category.

Even so, her panic itself was the last thing on any of Tandem’s minds right now. Even as tears stung her eyes and the force of her hyperventilation made her chest ache, Tandem forced her panic down to the back of her minds. It was just background noise. Something, she couldn’t afford to think about. Right now, she had to focus on the situation at hand, as hard as it might be to do so.

Right, she had plans for this sort of thing, lots and lots of plans. Even when things as minor as keeping her breathing under control felt insurmountable to her, Tandem could always fall back on her plans. Plans meant a degree of safety. As long as she could plan, she had a measure of control, even when things were totally out of control.

What was the first step? Manage her clones – that was always the first step. Letting them just stand around dumbstruck was a bad idea, and teleporting them around randomly wasn’t much better. She needed to keep herselves moving, far enough from each other that they’d be difficult to injure all at once, but not so far apart as to limit her mobility. Done.

What came next? Finding the hostages, they were the priority here.

Rapidly shunting her bodies between floors, Tandem spent only a fraction of a second in any given room, skipping them entirely if they didn’t seem likely to hold the hostages, or she saw signs that the mercenary capes might be present – just enough time to verify that the hostages probably weren’t there, before moving onto the next floor. As fast as she was going, she thought there was a decent chance she’d miss the hostages entirely and have to do a second sweep, but even so, she felt this was the fastest method of searching.

In the end, her concerns about needing to loop back turned out not to be unfounded. On what she figured must have been pretty close to the top floor, she found the hostages, huddled up near the centre of the room. It was obvious Blackburn had been here – hostages aside – from the puddles of liquid metal spread throughout the area. Tandem had seen quite a few of Ironside’s puddles on her way up, but even compared to some of the other areas of the building, this seemed like a lot.

The moment the hostages noticed her they immediately began begging her to leave in hushed whispers, and in an instant what meagre resolve Tandem had managed to build up crumbled as she was thrown back into the place she spent her every moment trying to avoid.

Tandem had thought about hostage situations a lot over the past 5 years, but on some level, the concept still didn’t make much sense to her. If you had a hostage, hurting or killing them would only serve to drive down the value of that hostage and more importantly it would make it far more difficult for people to negotiate with you in the first place. It was seemingly in the villain’s best interest to never hurt a hostage, but at the same time, if you never hurt a hostage then the threat wouldn’t hold any value.

To Tandem, the whole idea of hostage-taking seemed like a poorly thought out plan at best, one that didn’t make any logical sense if you thought it through to its conclusion, but at the same time she knew it worked because people weren’t logical under pressure. People made stupid decisions when they panicked, and so the threat worked. She knew that much all too well.

Before Tandem’s thoughts could spiral any further, she was snapped out of them by a horrible shrieking sound, a sudden surge of adrenaline snapping her back into reality as her three sets of eyes locked onto the massive humanoid construct that she had to assume Kintsugi had created. Tandem hardly had time to register the creature’s arrival, let alone to take stock of its features, before it charged at her, just barely managing to dismiss the clone it targeted before that clone was annihilated.

Though she honestly couldn’t say when, apparently at some point while she’d been out of it, Tandem had thrown up – the half-digested instances of the nutrient smoothies she had to drink, coating the insides of her masks and dripping down the front of her costume. Tandem hardly gave it any thought, only sparing a fraction of a moment to inventory the worst of the mess.

She’d fucked up again. She should have kept her mind on the plan rather than freaking out. Should have searched and secured the area once she’d found the hostages. Instead, she’d spent however long freaking out over nothing, and now she was paying the price for it.

The urgency of the situation the only thing keeping Tandem from slipping back into breakdown mode, she began desperately trying to piece together a plan for dealing with the Kintsugi’s construct. She was almost certain it was physically a lot stronger than her, not to mention more durable, but at least as far as she could tell it didn’t have any good options for attacking all of her bodies at once, not unless she brought her clones together for some reason. As much as she thought the idea of trying to slot powers into generic catchall categories, right now it really seemed as though she was up against a ‘generic brute’ type, at least until she could figure out more about the power that created it.

First thing first, she should try to debilitate the construct from a distance. To start with, Tandem tried conjuring up a sheet of paint directly above the concrete man. While the thing did have a head, it didn’t seem to have a face or any sensory ‘organs’ that Tandem could make out, even so that didn’t necessarily mean it didn’t ‘see’ through its surface or something, and even if it didn’t, it cost her basically nothing to check. At the same time that she was trying to blind the construct, another instance of Tandem set about creating a large puddle of lubricant, stretching the floor between the construct and the third Tandem whom the construct appeared to be targeting.

A moment was all it took for Tandem to determine that neither tactic would be effective against the construct.

Covering the creature in paint did little more than make the thing more colourful. There was still a chance it was detecting its surroundings by something like sound or touch, but in all likelihood, it was using a more esoteric, power-based method, in either case, even if she could find a way to cripple its senses it probably wouldn’t be worth the time it took to figure it out.

As for her attempt to trip the creature up, either it was too heavy for it to be easily slipped or whatever mechanism it used to move its body also prevented it from slipping. Tandem briefly considered giving ball bearings a shot but decided not to for the time being; it might work, but it was a lot harder for her power to clean up and might end up catching her allies or the hostages if they needed to move.

With her initial probing attempts having failed to find an opening, Tandem switched instead to trying to use physical barriers to control its movements, rapidly constructing piles of sandbags, bricks, and other such materials from within her inventory in the creature's path. Unfortunately, this too failed to restrict it to any meaningful degree, the living statue simply ignoring the obstructions at best and at worst creating dangerous showers of shrapnel as it barrelled right through them. Tandem quickly abandoned that idea.

Feeling as though her attempts at restricting the construct weren’t helping, Tandem decided to switch to the offensive. Provided the concrete it appeared to be made of wasn’t reinforced by Kintsugi’s power, she felt pretty sure she could do some damage if she hit it with her manhole cover, but with the way the construct moved around, that was a pretty big if. You’d think a creature that big and literally made of stone would be less agile than it was… What else was there?



Immediately after dismissing one of her clones to avoid yet another charge from the monster, Tandem created a replacement clone directly behind it, the new clone reaching out to grab onto the constructs arm. It was hard to tell just by looking at the thing, but depending on how exactly Kintsugi’s power created the constructs it was possible they were made up of multiple smaller parts, in which case she might be able to simply shunt those parts off into her inventory.

The Tandem felt her stomach drop the moment it touched the concrete man, and the other two visibly flinched when their other received the constructs backhand, getting hit hard enough to be flung back several paces by the blow. Tandem had thought she’d gotten used to the experience of being maimed or dying, but it turned out that it was a whole other story when she wasn’t the one inflicting it on herself.

While the injured Tandem writhed in agony, the two watching Tandem’s observed that in a single attack, the construct had almost certainly broken a lot within their counterpart. They almost reflexively dismissed the injured clone, if only to end the pain, but held off – the constructs focus still appeared to be on the crippled Tandem and this was too good of an opportunity to pass up for comfort.

Pushing as much of the pain of the injury onto another Tandem, the injured one forced herself back onto her feet, even as the construct closed what little distance it had created between them. Meanwhile, the final Tandem instance adopted a stance as though she were about to throw a fastball, though she held nothing in her hand. She just needed to hold it still for a second, and then she could end this.

Just as the construct had taken the last step and was about to bare down on the injured Tandem, something that was somehow far larger than it came hurtling through the window, seeming to home in on the construct before in the blink of an eye the newcomer had grabbed and thrown the Kintsugi’s creation out of the newly opened up hole in the wall. The whole thing happening so fast, that even with three pairs of eyes watching it happen, it still took Tandem a second to comprehend what had happened. Bird guy had just taken out in a second the enemy that Tandem had struggled to do exactly nothing to for the better part of a minute.

"I-Is...Is everyone alright...?"

Her teammate's voice snapped Tandem out of her daze. She was not in fact alright, but that didn’t matter right now.

Tandem had been panicking during the fight, but it’d been an almost useful sort of panic, one that left her relatively clearheaded and let her focus on what needed to be done. Now that the adrenaline was beginning to fade, however, Tandem found herself rapidly reverting to a far less controlled sort of panic. She needed something to focus on.

Right, the hostages.

Tandem took a moment to replace her clones, first the badly injured one, followed shortly by the one she’d been using to take on the brunt of the injured one’s pain. The new instances didn’t hesitate before setting about their task, quickly moving to obstruct all entrances and exits to the room, save for the massive hole in the wall, with various materials from her inventory. Only once that was done did Tandem begin running around trying to systematically remove each and every one of the many metallic puddles that filled the room, shunting the stuff into her inventory.

A buzzing in her ear briefly startled Tandem before she realised it was just the comms device she’d been given. It was Keystone on the other end, and Tandem was particularly careful to actually listen to the thinker’s advice. Using containment foam on the waypoints would have been a great idea, if she’d actually had any, and it would have been a game changer against the Kintsugi construct. If only she actually had any.

Tandem recalled back to when she’d requested to receive several gallons of the raw containment foam fluid, and had been offered the grenades instead. She’d rejected the offer at the time, thinking at the time she might be able to strong-arm the Protectorate into giving into her demands if she did, but in hindsight her stubbornness had been really stupid.

Also, on the topic of the comms devices, Decree had contacted her earlier asking to be told if she found the hostages, hadn’t she? Not that it really should have mattered. Tandem should have been in contact with her teammates from the get-go, especially for important things like having found the hostages or putting them in danger, but the thought hadn’t even crossed her mind. Yet another way she’d fucked up.

Having left it in her inventory for quite some time, Tandem was able to activate her own comms device with preternatural ease, though it still took her a moment to actually remember the process for doing so.

“Um, this is Tandem. I’ve located the hostages somewhere near the top of the building… Bird guy is also here. I’ve put barricades up in front of the entrances, but I can remove those if anyone needs to get in. There are a lot of Ironside’s puddles in here, but I’m removing them now.”

Tandem couldn’t manage to keep the shaking out of her voice and she spoke fast enough that she would likely be somewhat hard to understand, but right now she couldn’t afford to stress about minor details like that. To an outside observer, Tandem would not appear to be in a good state, while any sign of injury had vanished along with the only injured clone, Tandem somehow managed to appear exhausted even through her mask and costume, her breath uneven and her shirt covered in the now crusting remains of when she threw up on herself, shivering violently in the aftermath of the adrenaline spike.

“Are you able to start flying people down to safety.” Tandem addressed Muninn. She didn’t bother turning off her comms device, it was probably better if their teammates knew what they were doing or at the very least that Keystone was able to point out any bad ideas she had. “Also, to any people not currently being carried down, I need you to watch the puddles and warn me if anything happens… please.”

With that, Tandem turned her full attention back to clearing out Ironside’s waypoints as fast as possible.

Richter heeded Shattercrash's words with just the slightest pause.

Ironsides was tough, to be sure, but even the strongest metals had a breaking point. And with his power, finding what that point was and taking advantage of it would be a breeze. Briefly, he wondered what would happen to the person under all of that metal once he started destroying it—if there even was one. He never bothered to ask whether the transformation was just skin deep or more extensive, but it was too late for that. He had no intention of stopping now regardless. It still begged the question though—would he be able to take Ironsides down without killing or crippling him if it was the latter? Probably not; he didn't have that much confidence in his control. But even if he did fail, what would it matter? It wasn't like the guy didn't deserve it.

Sucks to suck.

Despite his morbid thoughts, Richter didn't pause in his advance. He moved quickly, taking advantage of the fact that Ironsides was still off-balance from Shattercrash's attack and ignoring the ground shaking beneath his feet. It didn't affect him, after all. With his left arm outstretched, his fingertips almost made contact with the mercenary's costume.

He felt it disintegrate beneath his touch, falling apart into a billion minuscule pieces, and he grinned. That feeling was always a bit of a rush. It almost made it worth it. Almost.

Now, for the rest of him.

Ironsides was not alarmed by the sight of his Liquid Metal going up in fragments. Quite the opposite, in fact. Rather, he laughed at Richter, and swung his arms in the boy’s direction. Sure enough, there was a gaping hole in the liquid that was quickly being filled in as more was generated. Blobs of the stuff sloshed off of his arms into the air, threatening to rain down onto Richter.

Meanwhile, Shattercrash was running around the back to flank Ironsides.

Decree’s voice suddenly blared to life on the public address system the moment Ironsides was about to swing his arms.

"Throw a left hook to the boy’s left side!" Boomed the disembodied voice.

It would be rather easy for Richter to work out, through how Decree’s power worked, that this would cause Ironsides to subconsciously attack in the same manner as her words. In essence, she was giving them a running forecast of all of Ironsides’ attacks. Even if Ironsides tried to resist, he’d have to take time to think of a new attack, and those valuable few moments would give them a window.

Decree continued to watch the fight from the monitors in the teller’s office, taking note of Shattercrash’s change of position, and that Richter’s attacks were making metal rain down. That could be trouble.

Well, that was less than effective.
Ironsides might have been covered in metal, but its liquid nature made actually damaging him more difficult than expected. Richter had never quite gotten the hang of sending vibrations through liquids. It felt weird in a way he couldn’t quite describe. He made a note to rectify that after this. It was a failure on his part to have not done so before.
It was raining metal now. None of it would be able to touch him, but he wasn’t going to take hits he didn’t have to, especially when he wasn’t familiar with the properties of Ironsides power. Richter bobbed and weaved between the rain of liquid metal to avoid getting hit, a slight grimace of annoyance on his face. It seemed as if half-hearted attacks wouldn’t work here; he had to hit him harder. And that meant he needed to get closer again.
Easier said than done.
A sudden voice almost made him lose focus, but Ironsides wasn’t as lucky. For some reason, he was following what the voice said. It was as if–[i]oh[i]. So, that’s what it was like in action. Interesting.
Well, scratch that last thought, then. Decree intervened at the perfect time.
The mercenary’s swing went wide, missing Richter by a mile and giving him the chance to counter, which he took without hesitation. This time he made sure to aim higher.
He should’ve gone for the head in the first place.
Ironsides was smarter than that. As his fist went left, the back of his hand went right in a heavy, power-supported bitchslap. He took a wide step forward, and Richter’s strike ended up hitting Ironsides in the chest, right as his massive hand was closing in to smack him silly.

This was the point when a quick flare of violet light shone behind him, as Shattercrash leapt into the air to drive her foot into the villain’s temple. Rather than clock Richter into the ground, his strike went over the boy’s head.

Decree’s brow furrowed as she watched the monitor. He took her command in stride. Of course, they were dealing with pros, after all. She needed to think bigger. A choice that would give them a more tangible advantage if telegraphed. She pressed the intercom button again.

"Turn to face the girl behind you."

Sure enough, Ironsides stopped dead a hair before his hand made contact with Richter’s face. His body twisted around and his face met a neon-glowing knee to the face.

Bits of liquified metal splattered outwards, and Ironsides barely flinched.

Shattercrash, not fully balanced, was smacked like a balloon and hurtled into a wall. There was a flash of pink light that cushioned her impact slightly and allowed her to fall in one piece.

”You kids really think you’re something, don’t you?” He asked, taunting them.
Richter barely stopped himself from rolling his eyes at Ironsides’s words. These types were always fond of running their mouths, especially when someone like him was involved.
His hands snapped upwards, clutching the mercenary’s wrist. Solid or otherwise, everything had a breaking point. He hadn’t been able to find Ironsides’ before, but Decree’s most recent intervention gave him the chance. Now in direct contact with his “body“, Richter had an easier time with things, sending vibrations from palm to palm, bouncing them back and forth to intensify them by the moment. His mind ran through all the necessary calculations, adjusting his field all the while.
It didn’t usually take this long to find something’s resonance frequency, but then, he’d never fought someone made of liquid metal before either.
Decree felt her whole body tense as she watched the fight unfold. Had Richter got him? Was it over? Had she helped?
Metal splattered onto the walls and sprayed everywhere as it was ripped apart, leaving their surroundings defaced. Richter got him good with that one, but he would be able to realize quite quickly that Ironsides’ protection had an ablative element to it. In simpler terms, the more he destroyed, the more appeared, like the neck of a hydra. It was as if there was no end to the silvery substance that Ironsides’ power could produce, and all of it seemed to slither inwards and around Richter’s hands.
Even as it did so, it was being eaten away at an alarming rate, while more of it coalesced into a puddle at their feet.
One could hear the smile in his voice. ”Bad move, brat.”
In the blink of an eye, the two fell through the puddle of metal. To Richter, it would feel like being dragged deep underwater. There was nothing but a pale void around him, and not an atom of oxygen to breathe. Yet just as that became a problem, Richter would find himself flying back to reality again, dragged out by Ironsides. They had been teleported through one metal puddle to another, only a few feet away from their starting point. And they were falling.
Ironsides slammed Richter into the floor, propelled by the force of travelling through the puddles.
Shattercrashed charged to knock Ironsides off of him, but he flicked his wrist and tripped her over with a splash of metal.
Decree’s voice caught in her throat. What should she say? Nothing was going the way she imagined. Every command she’d tried so far, Ironsides had been able to take in stride. She needed to think. There must be something she could say right now that wouldn’t make things worse. She tried to rack her brain, but she was too panicked to hold a train of thought for more than a second.
”You heroes don’t get it. Do you?” Isonsides asked. ”You can’t beat people like me.”
Well, shit.
This was bad.
Richter knew this would be a pain. Fighting someone who wanted to kill him with no weapons and barely any intel was a plan doomed to fail from the start.
The metal coating Ironsides seemed to have no end to it. It flowed over his hands even as it was being ripped apart, and he tried not to think about what would have happened if his field wasn’t there. It kept the mercenary from actually touching him, but that didn’t stop his head from ringing when he was slammed into the floor from nearly a full storey up.

Despite everything, Richter wasn’t overly shaken. He wasn’t out for the count just yet either; he still had a few tricks up his sleeve, and while he was never one to rush results, he might not have a choice. He didn’t particularly fancy trying some of the options he was considering. Especially since one of them would probably–no, definitely kill most everyone in the building, so that was right out. For now.
Well.... if it came down to kill or be killed, all bets were off, though. What was a little pain if it meant walking out alive?
This whole hero thing didn’t suit him, anyway.
In spite of himself, Richter couldn’t help but clench his teeth and roll his eyes at Ironsides’s little tirade. Kids this, heroes that. He must have really liked the sound of his own voice. So annoying.
“Do you ever shut up?”
Anyway, it was time for him to do something about this situation he found himself in. Richter raised his left arm above his head, fingers extended and palm flat, and with barely a second of thought, a series of high-frequency vibrations started around the edge of his hand. At first glance, it appeared as if his hand was vibrating. Of course, that wasn’t exactly the case; such a thing was still a bit beyond him. All he was doing was using some applied physics he’d only ever seen once. In a videogame.
What was that game’s name again? Ah, whatever, he’d figure it out later.
He brought it down to sever the mercenary’s hand at the wrist with a speed that surprised even him.
Silver mixed with red, and bits of what was probably armor. Richter’s vibration chop did something. But unfortunately, the hand was still attached.
Ironsides howled, and it was like a bear roaring. With his other hand, he slugged Richter across the face, grabbed him by the throat, and flung him into the wall.
”If you’re going to fight in this city, then you better have something stronger than that!” He shouted, his damaged hand going limp. ”You’re weak! You’re just kids! Go home, run to your families and forget about this! What makes you think you have a chance against people like me?!”
”Because we said so.”
Ironsides almost didn’t register that voice. He almost didn’t turn around, but then he recognized it a split second later. And his blood ran cold all of a sudden. It couldn’t be.
The metallic giant turned around and laid eyes on a cape in solid steel armor evocative of knights. Gleaming gold crested his shoulders in the shape of palisades, trailing down to gauntlets that looked like they were sculpted from the scales of dragons. Spikes jutted out from his boots, which were wrapped up in a strange, warm glow.
He wore a helmet that had only darkness behind its visor, wreathed in a crown of swooping lines. Hanging off of his shoulders was a cape of royal blue, tattered and frayed at the ends with battle damage.
Hellstar.
Ironsides didn’t move.
”Hey- Hey now, what are you doing here? They benched you. They- Fuck-“ He took a step back, as Hellstar took a step forward. Then another, and another still.
”Let me make your situation perfectly clear, Ironsides.” He walked forward with ominous serenity, the air in the lobby sparked as his hands swept past it.
”You just tried to kill a Ward of the city, and you’re robbing a bank,” he explained, while Ironsides kept walking back. ”And you’ve seriously pissed me off.”
”Get- Back up, you son of a bitch!” Ironsides barked, and his voice was devoid of all the bravado he had ten seconds ago. ”This doesn’t involve you!”
”It does now.”
”Fuck-Fuck-Fuckfuckfuck-“
