The Merryweather Institute is a heavily storied primalist school located in the confines of upstate New York. It has stood for at least two hundred years on the grounds of the former Merryweather Estate, gifted to the US government by the 19th century primalist senator Lucius "Luke" Merryweather under the guise of furthering human-primalist relations. Generations of outstanding primalists have been developed within its halls, and now your turn has come.
Forced to say goodbye to the world you once knew, you've been enrolled into the Institute for your safety and everyone else. No matter whether you consider it a prison or something else, you're here to stay for the term of your studies in hopes there might yet be a place where you can use your newfound powers for good.

Primal magic, otherwise known as elemental magic, are powers that relate to the natural world around us. It is the anchor that connects one's soul to the elemental plane, and allows a primalist to accomplish feats once considered heresy.
Each and every primalist has a chosen element their soul has bonded to. For instance, a fire primalist would have the ability to harness fire, whereas a water primalist could bend water to their will. There is no such thing as "holy", "time", etc. magic commonly seen in other media; every primal element, as mentioned above, is purely natural in nature. Otherwise, it wouldn't be "primal" magic.
The methodology behind who is selected isn't exactly known, but it is theorized from the development process that the elemental power stems from Gaea herself. Around the age of adulthood, a budding primalist will find their dreams suddenly filled with visions of natural scenery—sweet whisperings from the surrounding world. To give some examples, air primalists might have dreams of flying among white, fluffy clouds, while an earth primalist could potentially dream that they're climbing an seemingly endless mountain.
Now, if these signs are not heeded, then misery and suffering is to be expected. A trained primalist can be dangerous, but an untrained primalist even more so. Without proper guidance, these fresh primalists may unknowingly unleash their magic upon their awakening, potentially putting people in harm's way.
To avoid such a fate, these adolescents are uprooted from their homes, and are required to enroll into one of several academies, wherein they can learn to understand their newfound powers in ways that doesn't include them being a danger to society.

Since the dawn of time, primal magic has existed. Ancient historians often referred to such feats as sorcery or witchcraft, condemning primalists and their souls to damnation out of fear and ignorance. Practitioners of such magic were hunted down by their neighbors and burned at the stake simply for being different. Those who avoided drawing the ire of the inquisitors would go on to form small, hidden communities scattered throughout the world, leading to the first covens, cults and other such groupings.
Although these groups were unified by persecution, they each still had their own goals and motivation, which often lead to rivalry and sometimes outright bloodshed between different clans. This deadly inter-coven warfare would go on to be the cause of many historical events known today, such as the destruction of Pompeii or the sixteenth century flooding of the Yellow River, as the warring factions used their elemental powers against one another. In turn, with each coming battle, the world would further step up their efforts to eradicate the primalists from the face of the earth; a trend that continued for centuries until the breaking point had finally been reached.
Around three hundred years ago in Europe, there had been a primalist by the name of Vencel Thälmann. Though he had been a skilled primalist, Vencel was a simple man who had desired nothing more than to live a homely life with his family. That all changed, however, when the inquisitors seeking him slaughtered his family in an attempt to draw him out, setting forth a chain of events that would change the course of human history.
Blinded by hate, the enraged Vencel used his primal magic against the inquisitors in the name of vengeance, killing them in the process. Though he had been successful in avenging his family, however, Vencel could never let the anger in his heart subside, turning it vile and black with disgust. He began to travel throughout Europe and elsewhere in search of other primalists that had felt the same pain and anger he now felt, ultimately amassing a large following from deep within the shadows and hidden glades the primalists were had been forced to reside in for centuries.
Following his lead, these primalists gathered under Vencel would begin to lash out openly, bringing death and destruction wherever they went. Although the world's governments had attempted to fight back against the primalists' attack, their efforts were largely in vain against a unified front capable of bringing untold destruction. To anyone during that time, it had seemed the age of man was over, for the age of primality had just begun.
Or so it seemed.
Despite the numbers Vencel had, not all primalists chose to follow him into the abyss. Some of the primalists of the time had refused to join him in his madness, and instead fought on the side of man against Vencel and his army of primalists. Though these primalists were few in strength, these valiant men and women were able to turn the tide of battle in favor of humanity, often at the cost of their own lives, and in turn bring an end to Vencel's destructive reign of terror.
It is because of these primalist heroes that the nations of the world began to remedy the heavily-strained tie between man and primalist, knowing that they could not handle another following in Vencel's footsteps. Although there is certainly still distrust, anger and other such things between the two sides in the modern day, there has been much progress in bettering relationships made since the days of old; a fact that continues to improve.

For those who don't know, Primality is a roleplay that I've had on the back burner for some time. I had been disappointed with each prior rendition I made, but I think I'm satisfied just enough with this version to run it as a roleplay.
The core concept is simple: it's an academy roleplay with a cast of teenaged nature wizards. As alluded to in the first section of this post, the character are newbies who just have had their primalist awakening. Now that you've been embued with power, your goal is to find a way to or learn how to manage your newfound abilities so the world hates your kind a little less.
Perhaps you're a primalist who wants to use their plant-based powers to help the world's food supply, or maybe you're a fire primalist who wants to avoid burning down buildings when you get a little too hotheaded. Or perhaps you're just a scared kid who had been shipped off to magic boot camp like everyone else. Obviously, there are infinite possibilities out there for your characters to form their reasoning as to how and why they ended up attending the Merryweather Institute.
Now, if you're interested, please post below with any questions you might have. I'm certain there is a ton more I could add to this roleplay, but I don't feel like writing a hundred page PDF just to lore dump so any questions can and will help add to as well iron out any potential holes in the lore, if there are any.
