That sounds great! If they've already got a foothold in both Ortan and Orm with trade, it might not be too far-fetched for an industrious merchant to want to cut out the middle man and explore trading routes to the west and north if need be.

Excellent. By the way I was wondering if as flavor and motivation it would be an acceptable idea for my pirate/merchant to be a son of the Sultan of Matar. Perhaps an illegitimate or younger son, to explain why he's not stuck in the Sultanate?

Edit: Actually, he could easily be an orphan adopted by the Sultanate. Islam (and presumably a religion based in part off of it) encourages 'adoption' in the sense of raising a child in your household, although you aren't supposed to allow them to take your family name IIRC...

Keeping an eye on this because I love medieval, but I haven't forum RPed in a wihle and I've got a lot of stuff going on so I dunno if I'll be able to join.

How fantasy is the setting? Realistic medieval with a few mundane monsters in the wilderness? Or are things full wizard and dragon tier?

After giving it some thought, I think a soldier might not be a good character to RP, since it means I might not be interacting with other RP-ers and that sorta defeats the purpose of participating in an RP. I was thinking maybe I could play a Royal Guard sort of character, serving under a royal character played by someone else?

Realistic Medieval (with light/subtle fantasy elements) and we still have certain fantastical creatures (dragons, serpents, gryphons, etc) in historical capacity though they currently havent been seen or heard of in a few hundred years and that was supposedly only in Adadon.

Vecca, Himnar, and Volskar are the three big kingdoms of Vkaski culture with a merchant core in Govski. Outside of politics with one another being mild at best, there are a lot of nomadic pagan types all over their continent that are rather aggressive and such (think of norse vikings, pagan slavs, or even the wildlings from Game of Thrones). These three kingdoms are known for their skilled soldiers and mercenaries. They don't often deal with other continents in terms of trade, politics, etc. outside of selling out the occasional band of swordsman and such.

As for the situation, I think I might throw some "cold war" scenarios or perhaps a unified nomad band of pagans who are being very aggressive. Plenty of room for politics, but for now that's the brunt of it.

I do have one Vkasi character and he's pretty well-known hiresword/soldier in his homeland. His name is Zrefre.

Sandboxes are a little different than linear (narrative or character-driven) roleplays, but if you want somebody to work with I'm sure there are some ideas to work from.

Bit different than Islam, but I don't exactly have religious-political laws and such written out for them yet. So, lots of wiggle room. =)

Actually I can work with that religion much easier. I just assumed a not-Islam was the default since the cultural map laid them out as Berbers.

I decided to opt for a more diverse religion based on greco-egyptian hellenism, thought it'd be more unique. I mean I'm still doing research on a bunch of real world cultures for influence but I do love to mish-mash. I mean in one other world concept I merged welsh culture and spanish language to make something really strange.

Hmmm, that's workable. Getting an idea for a warrior princess type, or at least one who is more likely to take an active part in military strategy than simply sitting around looking pretty. Possibly visiting Orlandis to negotiate military aid or something along those lines? Maybe... And the cold war stuff sounds like it'd provide ample plot hooks too. I might end up making her be planning a military coup to seize the crown from her parent(s), but not entirely sure about that one right now. But that gives me plenty to work with, at least. Thank you. b^_^d

...I'll think more about this when it's not almost 04:00, though. ^^;

That actually seems like it could be really fun to play with as far as invoking various gods and such goes and coming up with some for reliable standby purposes and really fleshing it out will be enjoyable. Also judging by the description I can have a much more laid-back pirate now

Also a parallel to Dionysus would benefit much pirate lifestyle as a god of festivities, wine, and such. Glad you like it.
