Hello and welcome to Able Archer 1983! Before the site went down, we established having a military-themed roleplay set in the 1980's in Northern Germany. The scenario is a massive conventional war between the forces of the Warsaw Pact and NATO. The top two zones are roughly the area of combat. As GM, I will guide the course of the war in our area a bit, but it will depend on how you, the players, do.

Questions should be redirected to Gunther.
The rules and guidelines are as follows.
**Please note that Gunther is far above the treshold of participation, it's much more casual than you may think at first glance!
This RP puts the writer's enjoyment first and has room for unrealism!
**

1. No godmodding. Ever.
2. No fixed-wing aircraft unless in co-ordination with another character you have.
3. Pact players, please do not dogpile the USSR's forces. Show some love to the minors for realism's sake.
4. NATO players, do not dogpile the USA's forces for the same reason.
5. Mary Sues and Gary Stus are punishable by death.
6. Up to three characters per person. If you ask nicely I may give you more.

Units in the area
NATO:
41st Pantserbrigade (Netherlands)
3rd Brigade, 2nd Armor Division (US)
3rd Panzerdivision (BRD)
1st Armoured Division (UK)

PACT
5th Army (GDR)
2nd Guards Tank Army (USSR)
1st Combined-Arms Army (Poland, arrives in one day)

Hey, hi - following on from the discussion on Facebook, I'm posting so you know it's me, and to re-iterate the interest in playing some form of helicopter unit, either attack, reconnaissance or some other form of battlefield close support.

I've always had a fondness for the Kiowa and the Supercobra (though I think only the US Marines use those?), and I'll do some more research into what forces in Europe used various aircraft around the timeframe of the 80's.

I hope I come up to the standards, and thanks for letting me join in. I'm interested to see what happens.

If anyone has any questions about this stuff, please ask. You can send me a PM if you wish. I spent 21 years in the US Army including a deployment to West Germany in 1984 - 85. I was with a Mech Infantry Battalion in the 3rd Armor Division (US) at that time. I have also been reading Military History for 40 years and have a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science; concentration on International Relations with the Soviet Union. This was a useful concentration since I graduated in 1990.

Yes, the SuperCobra was made specifically for the USMC. I saw your discussion regarding the A-10s and believe it or not they were the most abundant aircraft on the battlefield that I saw in the 1980s.

An Attack helicopter Company of this era would consist of two AH-1s in the Company Headquarters section, one for the CO and one for the XO. Their Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) would be a Warrant Officer. There are also two Attack platoons consisting of an OH-58C Kiowa and two AH-1 Cobras. The Kiowa scouts "Battle Positions" for the Cobras. The Platoon Leader is a Lieutenant and the other pilots and WSOs are Warrant Officers. The Company has a total of six AH-1 Cobras and two OH-58Cs.

On another note, I got Drogo for which Game of Thrones Character I would be.

I think I'm going to retract my participation - it's not through lack of interest, as I am pretty interested, but right now I can't really engage my brain to the level it needs or summon the energy to create a character and do the research and reading I think it deserves to be accurate, simply because of time constraints and obligations I already have.
I don't want to hold anyone else up, so I'll step aside for the moment, but thanks for letting me in to begin with.

I've played several war games over the past 35 years. Is there one particular game you play in particular?

I think you're more likely to have a Chieftain than a Challenger, since they were only just coming into service in '83.

I sure can do that, too, and was also contemplating it. But wouldn't the British send in their best units, if there were to be a war this close to their home?
