I really enjoy science fiction, and have an interest in espionage, thrillers and anything with a lot of backstabbing and plot twists.

The most recent books i've read were Unbroken, a story about a ww2 pilot taken prisoner, and Leviathan Wakes, a space opera.

Pretty much any genre is welcomed, as long as it's a good read.

It sounds like you'd quite enjoy Neuromancer. I'll also recommend Catch 22 to you, even though it isn't really relevant I think it's the best book I've ever read.

I read this one when I was younger, but it's still an excellent book: Terraforming Earth by Jack Williamson.

Also, if you enjoy Star Trek at all (or enjoy making fun of Star Trek), you'll probably enjoy Redshirts by John Scalzi.

The Last Dragon Chronicles was pretty good, if you enjoy slowly watching a guy become a poor man's Doctor Who with dragons.

I really like books about dystopian societys. The biggest problem i've run into with Amazon is when you look up a genre and want to use the number of reviews or rating as a guide, more often then not YA novels with romance peppered in are thrown to the top, which is something I hate. I found that this little trend applied across all the genres, because even when I looked up horror / thriller books by rating, books about fucking love were at the top.

If you like dystopian societies then I think you'd like Uglies. It's part of a series of four; I only just finished the first book and am currently working on the second.

Basically it's about this world where everyone is taught from a young age that all people are "ugly", until they turn sixteen and they have an operation that makes them "pretty", when they're given a perfect body with no flaws whatsoever and they're allowed to spend their days doing nothing but partying and having fun with their pretty friends. It's one of those amusing premises about a future where they fixed one problem (in this case, unfair distribution of good looks) but created a weird world with a whole bunch of other problems in the process. From there comes a whole lot of betrayal and interesting predicaments, but I don't want to give away too much of how it all fits together.

I admit that there is some romance in it, though, but it remains far from the focus of the story.

Edit: Unwind is another good one along that same vein of weird and kind of unsettling futures. I read it years ago, though, and don't remember it too well. I only recently found out that it's part of a trilogy, and so I plan on re-reading it once I'm done with the Uglies series and then reading the others.

If you haven't already read it, and you probably have, Nineteen Eighty-Four is another one of those "has to be read" books. It's not really 'sci-fi' as such, but it is dystopian, and a fantastic piece of literature imo.
I also recently enjoyed reading The Player of Games by Iain Banks. It's sci-fi, but focuses more on the cultural aspects of that than the technology and such. It's about, as you may have guessed, games - not video games, I mean games in a more traditional sense - and touches on how games and the way we play them reflect on us and our society. Worth a read.

As far as space opera goes: Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge, The Night's Dawn by Peter F. Hamilton, Gateway by Frederick Pohl, Solaris by Stanislaw Lem.

As for cloak-and-dagger-esc drama, I've got less suggestions: the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson and The Black Company series by Glen Cook would be what I can think of if you've already read ASOIAF. I'm currently reading the first book in the Kushiel's Legacy series, which is advertised as being somewhat like that though I haven't really encountered such drama yet.

For Sci Fi I recommend any Robert Heinlein book.
