The far western country is Serranthia and it is the equivalent of Africa. If you wish to be a modern country, you'll want to be in the center continent called Centran.

You cannot be a modernized Serranthian nation. It doesn't exist. If you are a Serranthian independent nation, you won't have aircraft or battleships, etc.

I might have a suggestion, there is an Island far to the north that you might want to take. I think that is Centran technically. Might be the equivalent of Iceland.
