Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Republic City. It was meant to be a place of peace, a place of harmony. My past lives have worked tirelessly to maintain the balance of the world. Modern developments have made this a struggle. It is my duty as the Avatar to uphold the peace that my past lives have brought upon our world. Not even the Avatar could do this alone. I'll need the help of others if I am to live up to the expectations of the world.

Synopsis

The four nations, along with Republic City have been peacefully expanding and developing for several centuries. Korra's successor had lived a fairly easy life. He was perhaps the first ever Avatar that didn't have to resolve any major conflicts. Pro-bending became a nationwide sport. It was a steady, successful era. Scientists across the world developed new technologies, many of them making life much easier for the common folk. However, with these technological advancements came a new evil. One corporation, dedicated to the study of bending, developed a drug that allowed its user to temporarily bend an element. This meant that non-benders could become benders for a short period. Benders could also use the drug, allowing them to bend multiple elements at the same time, a feat only previously accomplished by the Avatar.

This new invention caused rioting everywhere. Rivalries developed among the benders and non-benders yet again. Those who had read about and sympathized with Amon were now rising up. It was the beginning of a revolution. Only this time, the Neo-Equalists would be on a more even playing field.

Bender's Serum

The Bender's Serum is the name given to the drug that provides temporary access to one of the elements. It is traditionally injected into a vein. The serum will allow for roughly two hours of unlimited access to a single element. People who have experimented with multiple serums at once have been known to have adverse side effects, the most common one being death. However, this does not apply to those who are naturally gifted the ability to bend an element. When a Natural Bender injects the serum, it works the same way as it does with a non-bender. This means that dual-"wielding" elements is entirely possible, even if it is only temporary. The serum has yet to be outlawed, however there is talk among government officials on how to deal with it. For now, they have decided to limit access by placing taxes on the serum. This essentially cuts off the lower class citizens' access to the serum. Those who are moderately wealthy (Not dirt poor) could still afford to buy the serum occasionally.
Each element corresponds to a different color serum. Below is a legend to help tell the difference.

* These elements have not been synthesized into a usable serum as of the beginning of the RP.

Terminology

Nats/Natural Benders: A slang term for those who are born with the ability to bend.

Arties/Artificial Benders: Slang term for those who use the Bender's Serum to bend an element.

Neo-Equalists: A group of people who still practice the ideologies of Amon and the first Equalists. They don't have any political standing, but they plot in secret.

Rules

1. No godmodding. It's just not fun for anyone.

2. Avoid all Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters. Flaws are fun, and they add to character development.

3. Keep all characters in the 17-20 range, please. Significant age gaps in the main characters can get a little weird.

4. All names must be of their respective origins. In case you don't know the origins, Air Nomads are Tibetan, Water Tribe Inuit, Fire Nation Japanese, and Earth Kingdom Chinese. This is the only thing that I am strict on when accepting characters.

5. I will decide on a posting order if I feel it is necessary. If that doesn't happen, assume at least two posts between each of yours.

6. I'm not super big on post length, but please make sure you give others plenty of material to work with. This typically translates to at least a solid paragraph.

7. If you plan on being gone more than three days, please let it be known in the OOC.

Anik is people pleasing, detailed orientated and is rigid with his organizational habit, yet he has a good sense of humor and takes part in other's jokes and tomfoolery as long as it's harmless and within reason as he likes to think of himself as the voice of reason among any groups he is in. He is also protective and caring for his friends and allies if a little overbearing at times. At times he can get competitive when people challenge him or his ideas as he can be extremely adamant about being right in certain situations.

Background:
Anik was born to his Waterbender father and his Fire Nation mother in Republic City. Anik was a sickly child and often stayed at home for long stretches of times. Anik learned he was a Waterbender at a young age after he bended a glass a water to splash in his father's face. Once his waterbending was learned Anik's father brought him to his homeland of the southern water nation where he was taught the traditional ways of water bending and hunting and fishing and even healing though water bending, this seemed to cured Anik of his sicklyness for the most part. After a year at the southern water nation Anik and his father returned to Republic City to a shocking surprise. Anik had gotten a little Sister while he was gone for the year, Anik quickly grew to love his little sister and soon enough he started to worry greatly for the little girl's safety. It was like this for most of his Childhood him worrying about his little sister and after years of no signs any water bending abilities it seem like his little sister wasn't a bender like him or his father but Anik still loved her greatly. Now that he's reaching adulthood, Anik is looking for a higher calling in life and with the rising tension in Republic City he is starting to question the safety of his Family and it seems like the two things will soon go hand in hand.

Personality:
Chen is rather pessimistic and cynical. He never accepts that things 'just happen' or that others are driven by 'the right thing.' He himself states that he is driven by his desire to uncover the truth, regardless of the outcome. Because of this, whenever he talks to others, he is constantly mentally noting things and trying to uncover the truth of their actions. As the only non-bender in his family, Chen is rather sore towards benders and holds a certain disdain towards powerful benders like the Avatar, though he hides it well and is able to act quite nonchalant about his inabilities. As a reporter, Chen's mindset is that of what was known in the progressive era of the US as a muckraker, seeking to uncover the dirt or 'muck' of large corporations and governments.

Background:
Chen was born to a family of Earthbenders. He was the youngest of four, making him the runt of the group, and to make matters worse, he was the only child to be born without bending powers. His siblings often teased him for this, which caused him to grow a thick shell to defend himself early on in his life. As life went on, his siblings went on to train to become Earthbenders and he grew envious of them, though he hid it well.

He began to look up to the eldest of his brothers, Bao, who treated him more kindly than the others. Bao even took pity on Chen and began to teach him the fighting style of Earth and Metal benders, helping him to utilize the form without any bending capabilities. Despite his skills, Chen still couldn't properly equal that of a bender. Because of this, he began to focus on utilizing weapons and tools into his fighting style. Chen created smoke and flash grenades to blind his opponents and was able to get a hold of an old equalist stun glove, developing it into something that suited his fighting style a little more. It was a slightly more powerful electrified baton he called a shock stick. His brother was a great mentor, and an even better friend. However, all of this soon changed when Bao was arrested for violent crimes against a group of Arties. Later in prison, he was brutally mauled, almost dying. Chen's view of the world was forever altered, and he became more pessimistic towards everything. To put it simply, he was crushed. He began to invest in more lethal weapons, such as throwing knives and a small crossbow. Chen even went as far as to obtain deadly poisons to coat his daggers in.
His cynical attitude led him to become a journalist in Republic City, seeking to unmask the dark dealings of the world. While reporting the violence caused by the newly formed equalists, he decided to devote a portion of his time to investigate the company that came out with the drug that started it all, that led his brother to jail, to becoming a cripple. He wanted to see how they benefited from the rioting and protests, from these Neo-Equalists as well as find a way to shut the production of the drug down, or at least limit its sale. He knew it might lead him to nothing more than a dead end, but he had nothing better to do with his free time and in order to appease the guilt he felt towards the harming of his brother, he had to look into it.

@jumpadraw Just to clarify, does Chen have much practical fighting skills? This RP is going to be heavy with combat, so it would be wise to give him some skills. Rather than just stating "Martial Arts," could you eleborate? Each element is based off of a certain form of martial arts. Earth, for example, is based off of Hung Gar, with hints of Southern Praying Mantis style Kung Fu in the Metalbenders (Most notably Toph). Since Chen grew up with a family of Earthbenders, he could very easily adapt to these styles. Other than that, I like him. He could allow for some interesting interactions between the Avatar and whatnot.

Personality: Jian is a dark and depressed soul, spending his days in entropy as he simply wastes away mentally. He has a hard time talking to, or trusting most people, as they often see him for the story than rather than who he actually is, though he almost prefers it that way, as remembering what he used to be like and how he'd fallen in so short an amount of time doesn't help his depression in the slightest. Quiet as a mouse, even with his rather imposing frame, it can be hard to notice him due to the utter lack of presence he posses now. The stubborn will that had won him numerous matches has been mostly broken through his own hand, as he constantly apologizes to those around him, sometimes for no reason, and is always putting himself down, calling himself trash, dirt, and worse, for making just the tiniest mistakes.

However, he hasn't been completely broken down yet, as he will still do his best to help those he sees in need, unable to ignore any wrongs that he sees before him. He also still retains a temper, though hard to ignite, that will bring a hellstorm of fury upon those who have ignited it.

Skills/Hobbies: Pro-bending, Practical Mathematics, Some mechanical knowledge from his father, Drinking his sorrows away

Background: Jian was a rising star in the world of Pro-bending. Him and his team, featuring his fire bending brother, Li, and a childhood friend, Kaia, who moved to Republic from the Northern Water tribe, beat competitor after competitor, few being able to match Jian's tactics and power, supplemented by Li's ferocity and Kaia's excellent positioning skills. They were a team that, when put together, simply couldn't be beat. Or so it seemed, but all it took to tear these titans apart was conflict within the ranks. Li and Kaia had begun to grow close over time, and while Jian had been pining for her since they were kids and had been working up the courage to actually ask her, Li decided that his brother was taking too long, and had no chance anyway, and moved in. Jian was completely blindsided by his brother's betrayal, feeling a mix of embarrassment, shame, and rage when he discovered them getting rather . . . intimate after a match and it all came out into the open.

He fled the scene in a blind rage, not wanting to see or talk to his sibling, but Li was insistent on trying to calm his brother down, following him all the way to a nearby park, just the two of them there at night. It might have worked too, but sadly his brother, not being the most empathetic of individuals, kept on stating that it was Jian's fault for never making a move and that he had done nothing wrong. This, unsurprisingly, set the earthbender off, and he suddenly launched a rock at his brother, who quickly blocked it with a blast of flame,eyes wide with shock at first, but then quickly got into a stance, knowing words wouldn't settled this. The two would engage in a fierce fight, with his brother still trying to talk sense into Jian, but having his words fall on deaf ears. It would continue like this for about 5 minutes, neither really able to gain any advantage over the other, until Hiresh felt something surge through him as he unleashed a tremor through the ground, his anger seeming to spread out all around him.

As the fissure rushed towards Li, a jet of lava would surge upwards as well, flashing past the startled boy as it collided with an outstretched arm and leg. The sight was jarring enough for Jian to snap out of his anger, instantly feeling shame, guilt, and worry as he rushed forward to collect his brother and hurry him to a hospital. Luckily for them both, Li would survive, but both his leg and arm were amputated. His Career as a Pro-bender, all that the two of them had ever wanted since they were little, was over. And Jian was struck with the guilt knowing that he had done this, and the reason he'd done it for had been so stupid and petty. After that event, the team broke up, Kaia looking at him like he was scum, Li not even talking to him, and even his parent's couldn't help but look at him with disappointment in their eyes, not saying any harsh words against him, but then again, not really needing to. But that wasn't even the worst of it, however, as not that long after it happened, the newspapers were all over the story, demonizing Jian as the envious brother that had tried to kill his own brother over a woman. They treated him as scum and trash, and the city echoed this sentiment soundly, making it impossible for Jian to go anywhere without his face covered, less he get attacked, both verbally and physically. This event, and the events that followed with other, minor conflicts, gave the Pro-bending association more than enough reason to end his career and ban him from Pro-bending officially anywhere, the very first disgraced player. This has lead Jian to live his life mostly inside or at his parents house, falling deeper and deeper into an ever-worsening depression, his reason for living becoming more and more of a mystery as the thought of ending it all became more and more appealing.

Other:Has a mental block that keeps him from bending Lava effectively, as he's afraid of what will happen to those around him.

@Raijinslayer He's quite... depressing. I'm cool with that. He'll be an interesting addition to Team Avatar. The only problem is his name. Earthbenders = Chinese. Please change his name to something more appropriate, and you'll be good.
