I did write some stuff that's semi cannon for Merfolk. I say semi cannon as it's not offical until it's implemented into an IC post.
The Merfolk of Atlantis
While their actual lineage as Atlantean has been hotly disputed amongst Merfolk being a mere legend, most do consider themselves to be in fact Atlantean even though no physical proof has been found to authenticate that claim. Merfolk live in deep underwater caverns, the largest under the Marianas Trench, they're protected from the surface world by an artificial sea floor above them which acts as their ceiling for their Kingdom.
Merfolk have long believed Humans to be vile monsters dating back centuries past when a Mermaid fell in love with a Human Prince and sought to walk along side him. Entering a pact with a Sea Witch she gained the ability to live above the water. However the Human Prince did not love her, he was to marry into a Human Kingdom, become a King and rule a Country. The Prince was a notorious philanderer and loved the idea of toying with a woman's heart. The Mermaid a Princess by birth returned to the Sea Witch to undo the spell, but she could not for the spell dictated that so long as the Prince lived she could not return to the Sea. It was what she thought she wanted or thought she wanted, but she was a naive and kindhearted girl unable to kill the Prince she killed herself. Once the King learned of his daughter's death he exiled the Sea Witch who ironically found true love and bore many children after meeting her husband elsewhere.
Since then the Merfolk had avoided all contact with Humans. And a longstanding grudge has been harbored by nearly all Merfolk; although some do realize that not all Humans are evil and that most are decent people. Those that reside among Demi Human Colonies are rare indeed, it is not uncommon to see a total of two Merfolk in an entire lifetime. The Merfolk vary according to age and species; young adolescents bare the signature tail that myths often account for, but as they age they gain leg like appendages. Merfolk include Mermen and Mermaids, Mersharks and Meroctopds most Sea Creatures are represented among the Merfolk and coloration can be vivid with semi translucent skin. Those who do live on the surface use a device call Hydroflow, which sends currents of water across the gills in a contained and bulky neck brace.
