<Snipped quote by Keyguyperson>Well, that puts damper on quite a few things.
I can still make this faction but I have to change almost everything about it.

I have two ideas which can work.
1.) They are descendants of colonists participating in a long range FTL jump experiment. They were thought to be lost but actually they were sent to a distant planet while also displaced in time. They built up their own unique civilization which barely resembles yours.

2.) Parallel development theory. Star Trek loved this excuse. Basically we are humans that developed on a different planet but very similar to Earth. Our language and culture has eerie level of similarities at times yet we are also quite different in other ways. If you watched the original Star Trek series you know what I am talking about.

Ironically I think 2.) violates our suspension of disbelief the least. We just need to come up with a name which makes my humans distinct from yours, at least when we refer to each other.

I think the first one actually makes the most sense, Time travel gone wrong could explain why other species might be humanoid as well, descendent from various human colonies. Sure they might have a few differences but perhaps the colonists did some genetic engineering to adapt to the environment and somehow regressed to an earlier technological state.

Here's my app, its "finished" but I'll probably go back and add some more unnecessary detail to the military section later.

As for Willy Vereb's idea, I'd actually personally go with number two. Number one makes sense, but I feel like convergent evolution would add just as much to the universe as Lucidnonsense's idea of having time travel explain the prevalence of humanoid figures. In the end though it shouldn't be my decision, since its your nation and I'm fine either way.

I am also on the side of 2.) because it gives me more writing leeway.
With ancient colonists trapped in time I'd be struggling to explain how they started over and developed a civilization akin to our own without realizing they repeat history. It might make sense for others and I have no objection on them using it.

I just feel the idea of my "humans" being developed elsewhere and accidentally resemble Terrans (are you fine with that distinction @Keyguyperson?) is actually easier on me. I have abolutely no desire for having Earth for my nation but cultures like various European and Asian nations did exist. For example without not!Japanese I could never deliver this joke:

Thanks to his recent ex being from the Hoshi system he's quite acquainted with the languages of the so-called "East". Thus he swiftly picked up the Hoshi language, in particular an ancient dialect belonging to the once existing Japan. In the current times this language is only spoken by history nerds and those obsessed with old relics like the Japanese laser swords, rumored to have their containment fields folded a thousand times.

I have a few vague ideas that might work-we've already got some commies, and some 'umies. And my faction would in line with that.

But...well.

There's quite a few different kinds of communism out there.

Speaking as a communist.

They uh.

they uh.

uh.

@Keyguyperson

Would a splinter descended from a cold war soviet-US "feel good" generation ship be out of line with your history? Perhaps an attempt to thaw the cold war that failed?

I'd like to keep the history of humanity the same as in real life, but if you send me a PM we can probably work something out. I'd love to have even more communist humans out there, ESPECIALLY if they build bunkers and call the Terran Union revisionist.

They are obviously the TRUE REVOLUTION.
Your Terran Union scumbags are counter revolutionaries trying to deny the vast fruits of TRUE COMMONUNISM.

Meanwhile my Federation are bloody decadents and greedy scum, strayed by the comfort of their technology.
Which is admittedly is a true claim, even if not quite the way they imagine it. Anyone familiar with Iain M. Banks' Culture series?
My people are the mix of that and Star Trek (with extensive amount of original flavor added to the mix).

I can easily have them be later colonists who dug up old databank entries on the USSR and promptly co-opted it for their own revolt.

Bonus points if they deliberately planned it for October.

"Fucking Neo-Soviets. They're a bunch of revisionist LARPers who like the color red. I'll bet they even have markets!"
-Terran Union, probably.

"That goddamned revisionist Terran Union and their religious freedom! How can they call themselves if the willingly take the opiate of the masses? They're literally Social Democrats!"
-Neo-Soviets, probably.

"Fully automated luxury gay space communism is the only way to go."
-The Federation, Probably.

"Fucking lower races."
-Romans, probably.

"Fuck you, Romans."
-Everyone except for space North Korea, which is too busy incorporating quotes from the Roman emperor into their ideology to remember that communism isn't supposed to be fascism.

Now we just need some space Chinese who practice "socialism with galactic characteristics".

Hey hey.

I've got a couple ideas. For one, I can introduce a sort of "magic police" faction that fights against abuse of magic and magic-based galactic threats using techno-magical WMDs.

Or I can bring back the Aeon Brood.

Whatever you guys would be more interested in.

"Filthy Neo-Soviets! Don't you see how superior our genes are and how superior the old-Romans are!?"
-Romans

Also, "Fully automated luxury gay space communism is the only way to go." made me laugh hard enough that I put it in my signature.

Man, we are even freakier than that.
Federation would have yet to meet any alien race but their population abuses the fact Q-Med technology allows something way beyond cosmetic surgery. Basically expect millions of furries, untold number of Klingons and who knows how many other fantasy/sci-fi alien race LARPing nerds everywhere you see.
And then imagine all these people actually living their private life this way.

Like I said decadence is absolutely right.
Albeit the Federation is pretty far from being communist. They are consumerist capitalists turned up to eleven.

I honestly feel bad for any alien race studying the humans.

"Okay, so most of them are communists?"
"Sorta, some are more communists than others."
"But they all hate each other despite being communists?"
"To be fair, one of them is based on some old civilization they had way back when, Ramens or something."
"So we have ancient noodles and communists who hate each other, I think I sorta understand now?"
"Oh yeah, they also have space furries."
"..."
"What?"
"Fuck this, go find someone else to be the diplomat to them. Sounds like their race as a whole has multiple personality disorder."

All right, this is still a major WIP but it's something. And you know, I realize that this species would probably do exceptionally well as a communist state, but I chose not to make them like that at all.

EDIT: And in case anyone's curious, the name of the nation comes from it's location. It's not what the Simulacrum themselves refer to it as.

I actually expect that kind of reaction from the Federation.
Human factions being out there is weird but when even alien races copy their ancient and way outdated cultural norms they would question whether they took too much drugs and actually they are just dreaming about some weirdly cliche sci-fi world.

Also sneer at nations which still resort to barbaristic measures like violence and war (which the Federation totally does but they found more PC sounding terms and convoluted methods to do that) and discriminate based on appearance when to them a random Q-Med can change looks within a hour flat.

Overall I feel my Federation might even manage to be more alien than most extraterrestrial factions in there.

A big point of contention with the Neo-Soviets....are they are VERY cautious about technology-cybernetics, genetic modification being abused. So they regulate the hell out of them through their CentralGov-they use them, but it's all standard, safe, practiced methods. Genetic modification? Faster. Stronger. Longer. Nothing "frivolous". Same for cybernetics. And they are TERRIFIED of AI, outlawed it. So the Stepfords...

Well.

Triggered as fuck.

It makes sense when you realize their string of colonies was initially ruled/conquered by a shipboard adviser AI who went full HAL. And had....a far too astute understanding of human nature and how to play them against each other. Imagine....an "aristocracy" of collaberators, prison guards, to watch the rest. Spoiled and decadent-lemme put it this way, genetically modified, conditioned "pain slaves" were a thing they got pleasure from-and of course, the armies of genetically modified slave-soldiers....

Yeah.

They have alot of issues with the "frivolous" use of genetic modification after that *hell*.

Ironically, a certain religious lady from the best video game ever sums up their attitudes quite well:

"Will we next create false gods to rule over us? How proud we have become, and how blind."
— Sister Miriam Godwinson, "We must Dissent" (Accompanies completion of the Secret Project "Self-Aware Colony")

"Already we have turned all of our critical industries, all of our material resources, over to these... things... these lumps of silver and paste we call nanorobots. And now we propose to teach them intelligence? What, pray tell, will we do when these little homunculi awaken one day and announce that they have no further need for us?"
— Sister Miriam Godwinson, "We must Dissent" (Accompanies discovery of the "Industrial Nanorobotics" tech)
