Tempest class frigate for the win.
As for being part of a battle group, I think we could cater to both sides here. Folks who want to stay focused on one ship, bridge staff for the main vessel. Those who want their own ships could either be launchable void craft from the ship (Solves the interaction between fights) or full blown escort class vessels independent of the main ship.
And W40k names are indeed, as they say, bitching.
@Andreyich They are mentioned as a disparate people, some still serving in the Guard, while others live isolated across the Imperium. I'm not adverse to the idea, I simply fail to see why you'd bother having a Squat when a broad and bearded (or not) human would do just as well...
If you're really all that keen though, and can come up with a good reason why they'd be part of the Emperor's Glorious Navy, then I'll consider it.

Because they do not have the same lore. A Squat has the story of his people damaged, lost, clinging to the Imperium like a sickly babe to a tit, trying to keep themselves unique and not wholly assimilated.
I like to stay in the comfort zone of a GM though so I will go with something else. So as earlier suggested, a Navigator or Fleet Comissar alright?
