"It ain't the same up there..."

Plot

The year is 1944. The War should've ended a year after with the victory of the Allied nations against the Axis Powers. That's at least what they thought would happen. Instead, they fell far too quickly. In fact, so quickly that by 1942, the war in Europe had come to a standstill. The land was divided up by the occupational forces of the new Fascist German and Italian Empire. These two major super-powers had successfully turned the war around with the almost unthinkable invasion of the Great British soil, known as Operation: Rising Hawk. Not having the defence capabilities to what they were facing, the last remaining competitor on the Western Front had been abolished, giving the Axis a larger chance to focus more on the Eastern Front. The Japanese, meanwhile, ploughed ahead a massive scale operation to dig into the North American territory without any warning, backed up by reserve Italian and German forces.

Though the war in North America was not fully successful, it still going at this point in time, both America and Russia have been put up into a stalemate, being two of the last nations not defeated by the unnatural storm. Things are different. The push into Moscow was an utter success, as more and more forces were able to be concentrated on the seemingly only remaining oppositions. That was until now. Before Rising Hawk could be engaged, the British homeland had become a refuge for many of the remaining resistances from the other defeated countries. Poland, France, Belgium...Many European countries had been caught in the defence.

After appealing to other Global leaders in secrecy, many of the other countries not yet caught up in the full-blown havoc offered to assist their allies as much as they could, with garrisons of troops, squadrons of aircraft and fleets of naval vessels...But there was a single issue preventing this. Attempts to send small convoys out to these countries were unsuccessful, and many were sunk without even leaving the European waters. To try and combat this, the remaining resistances, alongside the British Royal Navy, assembled one of the largest two fleets that could be drawn out from the defence in order to break through Axis blockades. Their target, first, was Australia, who promised to give both ships and equipment to supply those of the other countries. Those who went aboard this fleet were the useful ones brought from the small resistances. Ships flourished with the different nations to form the now nicknamed European Fleet of Salvation.

Splitting into smaller fleets, the ships pressed on towards their target. They set sail with little time to spare, as by the time they were clear of British surrounding waters, Rising Hawk was initiated. Many of the ships were ordered to keep pressing on, though some threw themselves back into the distant mists of smoke. Those who remained pushed on-wards, eventually losing complete contact with their headquarters. To make things worse, more than three quarters of the ships sent out were sunk in two of the largest Naval encounters known to the War's time.

Now, left without guidance, and only a handful of equipment, this Vessel pressed onto Australia, whilst smaller convoys set out to gather those from other nations that promised to supply manpower. Not officially being an army, they were deemed a resistance towards the overlords of the Axis. And that is where the European Resistance was created, more specifically, The European Air Force...

Overview

Alright, so...This is the Alternative World War II-Era story that I decided to put forward. To be more specific, this is about the final hope for a seemingly lost cause, in this case Europe. As the Plot stated, this is about the survivors who made it to Australia, who've been posted there for roughly two years since the fall of Britain. Basically the size of maybe one or two nations' regular military capacities, if they were still standing, they are quite the force to reckon with. The E.R. consists of thousands upon thousands of British, French, Polish, etc, alongside volunteers from the Russian, and American/Canadian nations, have settled into the lesser combat units, creating an opposition for the forces of oppression.

Now, the main focus here is both Air, as indicated in the title, and Ground combat of the next step in the war. Following these two situations, there should be a tiny explanation about who these people of focus are. Both men and women of the European Air Force, though strictly speaking they are not confined to the specific role, these pilots, gunmen, ground crew and radio operators of the crumbling earth are placed into a specified group to enhance their skill in aerial combat. However, that does not mean that they are never pulled out of the cockpit, handed a rifle and told to participate in the ground support.

The Aircraft that they fly is spread from those famous to the old nations, as well as new and replicated ones from the nations that have not yet received the tidal wave known as the Axis Powers. The world is still, however, using the propellers to drive their aircraft forward, much like the Axis air forces. With less enemies to worry about, the success of their machinery has led to the development of ground based combat, meaning the time until Jet Engines are far from near. Aircraft like the Supermarine Spitfire, Dewoitine D520, Avro Lancaster, all were available at these times. There was a small number of aircraft imported from the Russian and American volunteers, but not enough were sent for full-blown squadrons of that aircraft alone.

The characters can be of the surviving nations (If there are any questions about the nationality, do swing up that question to myself), either gender and experience. Whether they were recruited based upon the downfall of Europe, or by being a part of the Surviving Fleet, they vary in all shapes, sizes, skill and status. There will be some freedom to set up missions of your own, as gradually the pilots and units on the ground will take ground back, metre by metre.

Rules

  • Guild Rules - This is pretty self explanatory. Normal rules for the site, yadee-yadee-yadah.
  • Vulnerability - Though we are not going for full-blown realism here, do keep in mind of what you can do as the character, including capabilities in combat, socialising and damage threshold.
  • Character Limit - I'll be setting the limit for characters to two, if anyone wishes to make more than a single character. Anyone who has any preferences that exceed this limit will have to contact me beforehand.
  • GM - Communication - I will admit, I am not the most amazing GM, let alone any good at it. I'll try to maintain as much contact with you as I can, but it will also require you to contact me through Private Messaging if anything is needed, or at least by showing me something I can see through quoting or messaging. This is not really a rule, but more of a reminder.
  • Player Count - I don't really have any set player count here, and can go on like this with about two other people apart from myself. That means I don't have a maximum player count at the moment, though I don't typically expect that many people to be interested in this.
  • Aircraft - Sticking to Propeller based flight, this gets rid of any advancements in rocket/jet propelled aircraft. That means you'll have to dig up aircraft that was currently in service around World War II. However, it is available, if you show me, to create your own aircraft within the limits, as long as it isn't over-the-top with its mechanics and functions.
  • Interactions - Not all of this RP will be based around flying and fighting. I'm hoping for the story to also flesh out between the relationships between characters, whether they are positive or negative, to drive them onwards in different ways.
  • Overall - Let's try to at least have some friendliness in the OOC. I'd rather not flesh it out into a brawl just because something isn't going the way the other wants. Either argue it out in Private Messaging, or raise the concerns to me privately, then the issue will be resolves as short as I can.

Well, this seems like a fascinating idea. Definitely thinking of a Royal Air Service fellow, with a good ol' Spitfire.

@EisenhornSo, do you have any questions or concerns about this? I'm hoping to get this to top standard in your, and others', preferences.

@LetMeDoStuff I did think of a question, how much customizing are we doing to the planes? Don't want to go overboard and have it be unacceptable.

@EisenhornIn terms of an armament, something that the aircraft would have during those times. Take your note of the Supermarine Spitfire, it would more likely just be the regular quad-built in .303 (7.7mm) Browning Machine gun configuration, but very few had been fitted to use missiles. Ammunition storage may be raised, to drift away from total realism.

As for performance, I'd say almost no change to the airframe, shape or mechanisms, though I'd say the same for engine components and such. Colour can also be changed, based upon where the aircraft was sent from before the Fall of Europe (I.e. Africa, Europe, Asia etc). The standard customised insignias are also up for the taking.

For bombers, all of the above are the same, except with the difference of defence turrets. Within reason, the bubble, rear, front (etc) gunners can have a different configuration to what they might have usually been fitted with, based upon what you think is more useful to it.

Close Air Support/Fighter combinations, such as the Hawker Hurricane variants, can be fitted with rockets. Interestingly enough, there was a variant of the Hurricane that was also fitted with large Anti-Armour cannons as well as the Machine guns, which did jolt the craft around a bit.

If the new variation of aircraft, basically their own creation, then the same goes for all of the above. As long as it is usable, reasonable and reliable, them there shouldn't be any issues. Hope that helped!

I'll get to work on my CS just for a bit of assistance in a while.

Hopefully we can snatch up a few more bits of interest here and there.

Alright, I've put my own CS in the Character Tab, just so you can use it as a reference. You don't need as much as I have put, but that's all down to whatever you think you should put into the sheet. Also, I hope it helps!

If this is still live and going, I'd be very interested. There aren't enough (or, really, any) decent aviation RPs on the Guild as it is, and this one has got me interested.

I've got a few ideas for a character; I was thinking maybe an American pilot from the south, flying possibly a Grumman Tigercat, a Corsair or a P-51. I'll have to do some research to decide which though.
