P I T C H

Always remember others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.
Richard M. Nixon

The year is 2066 and the world has changed. As humanity marches ever forward into the 21st century, the thin line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans continue to rely on the enhancements of cybernetics and robots are continually upgrade to become more and more life like. This web of connectivity grows vaster by the day as common day occurrences like the internet have become even more engrossing do to advances in neurological and virtual reality technologies, that have made the dreams of "cyberspace" closer to reality. Humanity seems to have arrived at a golden age of innovation and advancements as new tech is released everyday making the augmentation outdated within weeks, but social tensions continue to bubble beneath the shining exterior.

Following the burst of the American asset price bubble in the mid 2030s and the subsequent depression whose ripples felt as far from Topeka to Shanghai, humanity was left in something of a slump. Governments failed to reign in control as entire towns and cities fell into total anarchy. To combat such chaos many governments were forced to pass acts which allowed prosperous companies primarily large PMCs to reign the populace back into control - such as the Private Intervention Act of 2035 in the United States. When the chaos finally subsided these companies manged to retain much of their power and today they made no attempts to hide their "security forces". Most national governments have either collapsed or stayed as shadows of their former selves puppets used by the corporations to pass laws and judgement in their favor. As a result nearly thirty percent of people under the age of sixteen are unemployed and over a quarter of the world's population are considered homeless vagrants as urban sprawl has slowly consumed the land and destroyed peoples homes.

These corporations, these faceless entities moving in the shadows wage a quiet war against one another and it is not uncommon for everyday citizens to be caught in the crossfire of two different enforcer groups. Rebellions and protest are crushed as quickly as they are formed, the instigators vanishing into black bags slick with rain never to be seen again. But even these revolts few and far between don't cause many waves if any. The people have become complacent to what is now everyday life for them. You wake up in your corporation paid for apartment in your crappy tenement housing, you go to your corporation paid for job where you worked like a drone for most of the day and face the ever constant danger of being fired if you move two seconds too slow with that filing report, and then you come home to watch your television who constantly remained you whose in charge. And they don't question a thing because how could they?

But this world like any has a darker undercurrent. Those forgotten by the corporate society above. Deep in the ghettos and the back alleyways, a different world can be seen. Here is a land that no even the CEOs and officials don't dare to enter without armed escorts and vans with ten inch thick windows. Those homeless and without work scavenge for what little they could to survive. Most fell into one of the many street gangs that roamed the back alleys and stalked the roads on cyber cycles. Holding strong control on many more illicit dealings such as drugs, prostitution and, black market dealings. But even they are still subject to the wills of the powerful as many have become little more than puppets for the bigger corporations to deal with threats and monopolize on illegal trade. And it is not uncommon for some of the bigger corporations to have multiple gang leaders on their payroll.

This is where you come in. You aren't some corp with a three piece suit and a fancy open floor office space. You aren't the rough and tumbled mercs working with a 'Conflict Resolution Firm' taking on whatever dirty job as long as the pay is good. You are the slumrats, the unemployed, the junkies, and the vagabonds. Those that picked up the new brain augmentations because the memory recorders beat any drug high out there. You are the kid that went to film school only to end up as a garbage man. You are the rioters wanting jobs and a government that isn't just a puppet. The slums are you home and its people your family. You live by on what meager living you managing to squeeze out.

You and your friends have their world turned upside down when you managed to salvage a box of prototype neruo-chips from a car wreck on the outskirts of the slums. Chips that happened to be very valuable to very powerful people. Soon Corporations, PMCs and gangbangers alike are all trying to kill you for one reason or another.

Sound like fun yet?

O O C I N F O

And we are back.

Hello and Welcome to Fear and Loading, a world soaked in rain, drenched in neon and corporate haunted. In lieu of events happening in the world, I've been craving some good old Cyberpunk and so here we go. It's very much rooted in the heart of science fiction movies such as Blade Runner and Strange Days. The works of men like William Gibson and games like the original Syndicate and Deus Ex. It's a story decidedly not about 'heroes', 'hardened mercenaries' or 'possibly android robot detectives'. It's a story about the script kiddies, the vagabonds and the disillusioned. It's a love letter to adolescent rebellion and the feelings of uncertainty that go along with that.

The Earth of 2066 is close enough to our own as to not feel too alien but distant enough to keep you guessing. A world with its own pop cultural icons, slang, drugs, media and history to make it feel believable. Yet at the same time much of this background has been intentionally left as vague snippets. Allowing players to add to the lore as little or as much as they please.

The story itself will go at a slower pace focusing more upon character interaction and development in the interest of creating good scenes and interactions between players rather than rushing forward from action set piece to action set piece. The focus always being on telling a good story. It's a tale about stupid kids, friendship, corporate plots, the infringement of basic human rights, and how far you'll go to uphold your ideals.

General world-building stuff for your reading pleasure. More will be added as we go on.

So the plot is No Country for Old Men but with cyborgs instead of cowboys?

I mean I'm of the persuasion that Cyborgs make everything better even dare I say Cormac McCarthy.

@Didgeridont
But can there ever be too much Cyberpunk? I believe not.

No Myke I just post random interest checks while having no intention to actually fulfill them. Nah I think I'm back. The four month siesta was nice and all, but its time to get back to the grindstone.

And ah the smart mouth hacker, the cornflakes required for any hearty cyberpunk breakfest.

Anyway so we are at fourish people currently not counting my self. That's a workable number, but I'll probably see if we can't get a few more people because we always need more meatshields.

@Hexaflexagon

I'd love to try.
Will make an only slightly insane professional cybernetic gladiator who got hooked to a prosthetic body that was mostly chrome at a tender age of 11 due to massive corporeal injuries after a freak driving accident. He leads a team of other mercenary psychopaths in corp-backed urban brawl championships in return for regular upgrades and psychosurgeries that allow him to keep up with his augs without neurotop and doesn't realise the general indignity of his position due to constant stream of emotion and sensation shooting through his system - until the beginning of IC events at which point he will begin to ponder on his existence due to a large gap between sportsmanship seasons.

His scenic name will be...
Top Brass, Cere-Bellum or Sodomaster, depending on this month's gimmick.

Most definitely interested. Thinking about a sukeban/banchou-esque character who leads a gang of drug runners to assist in spreading the VS market to those who wouldn't normally get into it, has aesthetics for bousouzoku gangs and the like, prefers melee weapons to the ID technology, is secretly paranoid about becoming a C-Freak so she's developed a sort of dependency on Neurotop -- maybe even is planning a huge heist without taking into account the suicidal rates of failure? Looking to see where this goes!

Color me interested~

If we're allowed to make more than one chara, I'm thinking about making twins xD. The gal will probably be a hover board racer/activist with an attitude problem. The guy will be the more timid of the two, tech-savvy and polite, makes sure he and his sis don't end up dead OTL.

Hey look at that more people.

@Sarcor
Yay Meatshields!

@Keksalot
I mean isn't everybody slightly insane? But yeah sounds good. The whole run down pit fighter thing, reminds me of Texhnolyze actually which is a good thing because its where some of the inspiration for all of us was drawn from.

@motherconjurer
A drug pusher or runner is totally viable. Probably end up working for some bigger gang though because even if they have their own crew a small time crew like theirs (considering they are still stuck in the slums) would get eaten alive without a bigger backer.

@The Book Thief
Normally I'm against more than one character basically out of experience and cynicism more than anything else but twins are actually one of my few exceptions. Mostly because a good set of twins is more like one cohesive character if done correctly. But in the end it'll probably all come down the character sheet.

And speaking of character sheets. I'm working on the OOC now so expect that soonish.

Since we're all in the slums, I'm guessing we don't have cutting edge tech, but would the tech savvy types like my character and one of Book's twins be able to have custom "home brewed" tech?

Yeah generally. It's nowhere near as effective as something like a corporate response team or a PMC (who will wreck all of you no matter how good you are. It's kind of the point. I don't want everybody to be super powered badass. If you charge into the room without a plan you are going to die.) will have but it'll get the job done.

I am interested. How heavy/dark are we talking when it comes to the storytelling? In my mind good cyberpunk acknowledges the abject human misery caused by rapid technological advancement for the rich without getting completely lost in it (ala Transmetropolitan). Also, that stuff gets really depressing to write. But if we're all slum dwellers, that's tons of unresolved trauma that's floating around.

Nonetheless, I would want to play an American based 419 scammer who is basically a script kiddie that gets his hands on some cutting edge cybernetic hacking tech by accident, if you'll have me.

Cheers!

@Sparkwell
Well I'll put it this way.

You have a world that is recovering from several costly global conflicts, governments answer to corporations and not the other way around, the media is censored to the ninth degree, and social divisions are at an all time high. Yet you also have a functioning and stable middle class, society and culture hasn't totally gone undone by mass consumerism and technology while creating as many divides as it is, is also allowing for cripples to walk, the blind to see and once unattainable problems to be solved. In short the world is complicated it has its dark sides and its light sides not a straight dystopia but not a bustling utopia either. But yeah the subject matter is going to be heavy. Human trafficking, addiction, and the inability to crawl out of a pit of economic disparity all are real factors in the slums. Everything whose ever lived in a state of abject poverty is a little it damaged one way or another something I can attest to. And peoples character should reflect that.

And well I can't promise I'll take you or anyone really for that matter. I'm not a fan of making promises or reserving spots before an OOC is posted even to people I know. (You can ask Myke.) I judge based on character sheets. If you put your all into whatever you bring to the table odds are though I'll probably give you the okay.
