The Mourning Mirrodin Tavern

(A Magic: the Gathering sandbox roleplay)

ALWAYS ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS!!!

Ravinca is one plane among many that swim through the multiverse. Its industrial inhabitants have eons ago assaulted every corner of the world with their constructions of buildings. Today it stands unyieldingly constant cityscape as far as one cares to travel. There are many civic centers on Ravinca but by far the biggest, best known, and whose name has become synonymous with the plane itself is Ravinca: City of Guild. The Ten Guilds of Ravinca are kept in check by an agreement known as the Guildpact. Without the Guildpact, conflict would be inevitable.

Now, just outside of the City of Ravinca proper, there is a raised mesa only accessible by air or by a single bridge. Tribals of the Gruul Guild make ground assault unreasonable. On this mesa, there is a small marketplace and apartments. This mesa is not noteworthy except for a tavern called “The Mourning Mirrodin”. No citizen of Ravinca knows why the tavern owner has named his establishment has such an odd name. It takes a special kind of person to know what a Mirrodin is. Such a person is almost undoubtedly a Planeswalker. If you seek a Planeswalker on Ravinca that is not of the normal variety (not that normal can be applied to Planeswalkers), one would be wise to speak with the patrons of “The Mourning Mirrodin”

The Mourning Mirrodin Tavern

The interior of the Tavern is very open and often crowded. The tavern is open all day every day. Sometimes are more frequented than others. The floor is always covered in several inches of fog. There is a running joke played on newcomers that if they can find the fog machine you can get a free keg from the tavern master. Many beings of all shapes and colors can be found frequenting this tavern. Many come for gossip, some come to seek odd jobs, and some come here just to drink. Planeswalkers and Ravincans come here to collect job notices and contracts. Some seek rumors and hunt for individuals. The Tavern master himself makes sure that Ravnicans get jobs Ravnicans can do and keeps the special tasks exclusively for Planeswalkers.

The Mourning Mirrodin is the neutral territory for planeswalkers of all kinds. Any disputes between planeswalkers are strongly encouraged to be taken outside into the streets or off world. Just not inside the Establisment.

Intent of this Roleplay

In this sandbox Rp, you will be a planeswalker, and hopefully a patron of “The Mourning Mirrodin”. Planeswalkers are beings that are able to travel between the various worlds of the multiverse. Not being bound to a single plane, most planeswalkers have the ability to learn more magic than any plane bound Archmage could ever dream of. Planeswalkers are rare. Only 1 in every million sentient beings possess the Spark needed to cross the void between worlds. Even fewer who have the Spark ever ignite it and become true Planeswalkers. The Act of planeswalking has been described many ways. Nissa of the Gatewatch once said something to the effect that planeswalking is like walking through a door way, but not everyone can see the doors. I personally like the idea it is more like stepping left. Stepping left and not going left.

Knowledge of MTG Lore or even how to play the Trading card game is not required!!! It is however helpful. Keep in mind that this is a general medieval fantasy setting.

This is a sandbox. If you want to do something or go somewhere, let’s go and do it. If y’all want to travel alone or with a group that is up to you. If you want to seek out the most powerful artifact in the world or want to go storm the castle, let’s go do that. I as the GM, will be playing the NPCs and World to make sure you have the opportunity to do what you want. This way the world will be reactive to your choices. The tavern has many jobs for you to do, if you are at a lost at what to do.

Bulletin Board for Job postings

This roleplay is a sandbox. You can do whatever you feel like doing. If you want to storm a castle, you can do that. You want to quest for some sacred Relic, let's do that. If you want to hang in a bar, you can do that. However, if you are unsure what to do, there is a bulletin board located on the first floor of the Mourning Mirrodin Tavern full of jobs to accomplish. In no special order, they are listed below. Feel free to come up with your own job requests.

Yes, you are createing your own personal planeswalker. An original character. Yes, the planeswalkers within the trading card game made by Wizards of the Coast are in this roleplay universe. I would prefer you did not roleplay one that is already made, and I would like to avoid interfereing with those characters. However, there may come a time where you may cross paths with a canon planeswalker. At that time, i might allow you to roleplay their actions.

Name: Lanestol

Alias: The Cardinal of Calamity

Age: 45

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Class: Priest

Appearance:

Lanestol stands 6' 2", wears light leather armor beneath his black robes becoming of a member of most planes' clergymen. He has a bit of a trimmer stature, on the lighter side of athletic as he relies more on his magics than physical capabilities.

Magical Specialty: Transfer of life energies (helps him stay young), defense and evasion

Primary Color: White

Secondary/Tertiary colors: Black, Red

Preferred creatures: Foxes, Clerics, Vampires, Priests, Demons

Favorite mechanic/keyword: Extort

Home plane: Innistrad

History: Lanestol was born on Innistrad, the realm of struggle between humanity and its predators, in the city of Ashmouth in the Stensia province. He started training in magic from his youth from one of the schools under the Church of Avacyn, initially training in healing and preventative magic. He began to work his way up to more advanced magics as a prodigy of the abbot in the church dedicated. Through plots and intrigue unknown to him at the time, his mentor, an elder, turned up dead one morning when he was 11. He continued his training through the succeeding elder, who taught him the darker sides of life magic, helping him channel his ability to take life, burn and corrupt from within. Though initially opposed, he gave in and trained in ways that undid his earlier lessons under the guise of "advancing his studies further and studying the countermeasures of life-giving magic."

Upon his graduation from the school, he began work as a cleric in the Church of Avacyn, entering the priesthood. He continued his work for his parish until he was 31. He had ascended to eldership for his parish one year earlier due to the high turnover rate (high turnover into food for vampires, werewolves and the undead). One day, he stumbled upon a secret meeting between his second mentor--now the Mayor--and a demon he had a contract with. The Mayor noticed Lanestol and threatened him, though his former student did not back down and challenged the Mayor to a duel, countering with the threat of revealing his dark pact to the town.

The duel ended after half an hour, with Lanestol narrowly besting his former mentor. Foregoing the opportunity to finish his fallen opponent, he instead questioned the Mayor about the death of his first mentor. He had begun to suspect a few things over the years, though without solid proof, he could not accuse him of anything. With his fate in his better's hands, the Mayor revealed he did, indeed, kill Lanestol's first mentor in an attempt to fast-track his way up the clergy ranks. His ultimate goal was to supplant the Lunarch himself. A burning in Lanestol's chest flared up like never before, anger and suppressed grief rising up and unleashing in the awakening of his Spark.

He planeswalked to Kamigawa, suddenly confused as to why he was not facing the fallen Mayor. Or why he did not even know where he was. It did not look like anything he had ever seen before. It was much more lush and the air much fresher than anywhere he had ever been on Innistrad. All he could do was walk and try to find someone. After two hours of wandering through the Jukai Forest, his injuries, drained power and hunger took the last of his energy. He awoke after a nearby kitsune village took him in when two of their sentries discovered him unconscious. An elder among them answered several questions he had about where he had wound up. In return, he used his skills to serve the village until he regained his bearings.

After he had figured out more about his planeswalking power, he finished repaying his dues and left to another plane, to Ravnica. Among the various guilds of the great city-state, he found his place best serving the Orzhov Syndicate, even after discovering their corruption. He resigned to always serving corruption in the church, giving partway into the darkness he was trained in. He continues ventures to other planes throughout the realms and making regular stops in Innistrad, Kamigawa and Ravnica, taking an occasional happy hour pit stop at the Mourning Mirrodin.

Groups/factions:
-Patron of the Mourning Mirrodin Establishment
-Church of Avacyn (former)
-Orzhov Syndicate

Trinkets/ Inventory: Carries a staff with him bearing the Orzhov sun insignia, which serves both as a channel for his magics and a solid beating stick up close. Wears a necklace with a near-indestructible ruby in the center.

Theme Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irnikRf7hEY&index=29&list=PLB1A736FC282F9FA4

Other: The necklace houses the deceased soul of a devious kitsune Lanestol defeated in his third trip to Kamigawa. He had originally possessed Lanestol before the planeswalker found a way to compromise and seal him in the gem since he could not eradicate the possessor completely. It does come around now and then and take control of Lanestol and has come to know his host's power. They remain attached to one another, even as Lanestol walks the realms.

Crumbs, can't believe I missed this. I'll think on a character concept over the weekend, and then try and post an actual sheet after the weekend's done. While I'm amazingly bad at Magic, I've always liked the lore (well, most of it), and so a chance to explore the bit of Magic I like the most without being bogged down by my inability to build sensible decks is a real opportunity.

I like your character sheet. Your planeswalker is clear white and black, but I feel your justification for having red is a little weak. However, I know from experience beings from Innastrad are often more than meets the eye. I will not have you change your colors. Please post your character over into the CS thread. I already have some ideas for adventures for your character.

@Hylozoist

Thank you for joining up. I hope your ability to make less sensible decks gives you a unique character.

@Achronum

I like your character. She seems very legit. Theros may be among my favorite planes now after the devastation that has laid waste to Mirrodin, Zendikar, and Innastrad. I like your background a lot. I already had an Idea for an NPC who worships Mogis, I am interested to see how your character interacts with that one. I would accept your character, but You have fallen for my trap. I have taken a GM trick i have seen successfully used by others. You seemed to have missed something important. Please reread the rules section. You can basically ignore rule 7, it is just a place holder to round things out to 12. Otherwise, it is just 11.

Hello again, @MarsAdept, I've spent a bit of time thinking about things (and looking through some of my rather goofy EDH decks...) over the weekend, and was wondering - would colourless be a valid Primary colour? I ask because you mention that any race is acceptable, providing it's sentient and made of matter, and I've been staring at my old Myr deck while eating breakfast, and… well, you see where this is going, right?

I just want to make sure that this is an acceptable idea before I start writing stuff down for it. I'm happy to go back to the drawing board if this isn't going to fit in with what you've got planned, as the drawing board is cluttered with all kinds of stuff to pick from!

Well, to borrow a quote from Grace Hopper - "If it's a good idea, go ahead and do it. It is much easier to apologize than it is to get permission."

Clearly, I've had a bit too much time on my hands this morning, so I ended up writing all this up anyhow while waiting for things to come out the oven. If it's not okay, then I'll go back to the drawing board again.

@Hylozoist I apologize in taking so long in replying to your inquiries. While I am Always Watching this thread, I actually had to think about your questions plus I was at work and could not steal away long enough to reply.

Ok, I have decided that I will allow colorless to be a primary color, however I am unsure if I want to allow this choice to lead to a planeswalker wielding Eldrazi Magic. I might if they come exceptionally Lovecraftian.

As far as myr, I have an exceptional weakness for those metal robots. I started playing magic back in the Original Mirrodin (yes the most broken set of magic) and my original deck was a mono blue myr tribal (Yes, I learnt to play blue first.) BroodStar was my amazing finisher if myr did not seal the deal. From the known lore, The height of the myr's relatively primitive culture was just before the Phyrexian invasion and it is unclear how the virgin race will handle the Phyrexian occupation.

All that being said, I accept your character. Your origin story is exceptionally cute and hilarious. I imagine the industrious and scientific myr doing just that. Alexander would definitely like to have a stern word with your myr. Anyways, Please post your character over in the CS thread.

No worries @MarsAdept on the time front; I had some free time to spend today, and had the urge to try and wrangle this idea about Myr trying to make a planeswalker into something approaching a workable character. I wasn't really in a hurry for approval, but I appreciate that you've got back to me quickly. In the game I'm running, I consider it a small victory if I can get back to somebody within a day, so your turnaround time puts me to shame.

On the Eldrazi Magic front, I think that can be something that can be discussed later on - if the general tone set by what everyone is off doing gets to the point where it might be thematically appropriate to the story, I might bring it up in a "hey, could we look at this as an option?". I fear that something will have gone horribly wrong, or hilariously right, if we get to the point where the players are having to deal with pretty much anything Eldrazi related.

I'll throw my character over to the characters tab, then get back to poking cakes with sticks. And maybe put together a little Myr deck. I'm all inspired today.

Good Morning, Planeswalkers!!! I am just dropping a probe here-

Today is Tuesday and the start of my work weekend, start of my school week. I Know there are several people still working on their most epic planeswalkers, however we do have enough to get a reasonable start. This is a sandbox, so anyone can jump in at any time. Alexander Pax seems to always be aware of where his patrons have wandered off to. I am going to Open up the IC sometime this afternoon, or tommorrow, Wednesday, at the latest.

@MarsAdept I wanted to let you know that I am interested in joining this thing. For my character, I was thinking of going with a blue/black faerie from Lorwyn who specializes in illusion/dream magic and I wanted to make sure that that was okay with you. :D
