Broken Skies

War in the Eversky

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Greetings and welcome, friends, to an RP based on the universe in which I plan to write a novel. Let me start by saying that the novel itself will take place a fair while after the events this RP pertains to, so it's more than unlikely that any character made here will feature - but what is quite possible is that your actions will affect the novel itself, so choose wisely.

In the next hider, there is a rough summary of everything that has occurred in the world, from the beginning of its history post-sundering to the day this RP begins. It's by no means perfect, but it will serve its purpose. For those of you coming here directly from the interest check thread, everything within it was in the op of that thread so there's little point in reading it. It hasn't changed.

These next hiders contain more in depth explanations of the current state of the Eversky, as well as some information pertaining to the capabilities and cultures of the three major nations, between whom war may be brewing.

And now for a brief description of the current state of the World Court, and their resident extremist religious sect, the Heavens' Eyes.

And now for some brief descriptions of the races.

That's about it. I think. Let me know if you have any questions.

EDIT: The colour used in the new template is lightsalmon, but you can use any you like as long as it's readable.

Alright, that's all I have to put here. Please apply as soon as is convenient, remember that typical forum rules apply as always, and the GM's word is final.

Guess I'm here first, here's my character: our resident grease monkey for all our travel-repair needs.

@vietmyke Excellent app. In fact, can you pm me the code you've added? I'd like to make it the official template if that's alright. You're accepted of course.

As for how well our characters are acquainted, it's more than possible that they know each other and have worked together in the past, but this is likely to be the first time they've all been together at once. My character in particular is actually a member of the World Court peacekeeping forces, and a liason agent working for them, so he's possibly dealt with the PCs before, but never actually worked with them directly.

So who exactly are our characters? Secret agents now all part of a random airship crew? Should our characters already be (in)famous, or will they be ordinary joes?

@Bazmund I had a similar question to @BingTheWing. I was thinking of making a human bounty killer that was born in the Sovereignty but has gained something of a reputation across the Eversky. Would that make sense?

@Lexicon

Yes, they're likely to be people with some degree of reputation. The RP is meant to carry something of an air of desperation however, as - believe me - it is not going to be easy to prevent war, and it's entirely possible to fail, so they won't be godly.

But yes, some degree of reputation, they're likely to have taken work from the Court before so they're certainly known to World Court staff.

Also, elvish life expectancy, please.

Full elves have been known to live up to 250 years, but these are rare cases. Most commonly, they live to 200 or thereabouts. Half elves can expect roughly half of this, making them a kind of Dunedain, for those of you who have watched Lord of the Rings.

Character applciation template has been updated, thanks to @vietmyke. There is a hider to copy the code from, and an example of what it should look like just above.

Welp, my character isn't particularly of any note... Perhaps I can provide our little party with the airship with which we travel on? Or is that already planned out @Bazmund?

Thinking of making a Dryad sharpshooter for the party, so with that in mind I had two questions

1. An echo of the earlier, approx. how long should a Dryad live?
2. How deep is the average Dryad's connection to nature in general? Are we talking 'feel the pain of every tree' or 'other than my home tree, a tree is but a tree'?

@vietmyke The Word Court's special tasks office is planning to secretly provide the party with a corvette capable of Upper Lift travel. Unfortunately, civilians don't really have access to Upper-Luft tech, most of the time, on account of the Heavens' Eyes ban on civilian use of Floatstone. You can spruce up your character's military record if you like, but he's honestly fine as he is. I don't intend any of our characters to be legendary either way, and his engineering skills should be more than enough to keep us afloat.

@Deadnaut Dryads live basically as long as their trees do. Their trees, however, receive shortened lifespans as a result. Your typical dryad will live between 100-130 years, a similar lifespan to a half elf. As for their connection to nature in general? Somewhere between the two things you just said. They experience a connection to nature in general, but their tree is special. They're not adverse to sailing in ships made of wood, but they're not comfortable seeing woodlands cut down. For this reason, they tend to avoid the Iron Dominion.

Technically, couldn't a dryad be immortal? Its said that Dryads keep cuttings of their trees with them at all times- so couldn't they just plant that cutting and turn it into a new- younger- tree?

@vietmyke Theoretically, yes. However, there have been no instances of this occurring yet, and the cuttings themselves tend to produce weaker clones of the original - perfectly viable for keeping the Dryad alive, but less reliable. Plus, even with the innate magic of a Dryad so close to them, the cuttings become unviable after a while anyway. It's hardly impossible, but not terribly likely. Plus, it's not like keeping the tree alive would keep the Dryad out of harm's way - and there are plenty of people who'd like to hurt Dryads, for all sorts of reasons.

@Bazmund Out of curiosity, besides the airships, what technology level are we looking at here? I'm planning to have my character use a heavy crossbow and a sword, though it looks like guns are a viable option as well.

EDIT: Actually, never mind. I think, after rereading the opening post, I should be fine. I did want to ask, however, about elves really quick. Would a half-elf character be possible?

Keeping in line with the age-related questions: how long do dragonkin on average live for? From what I've gathered they are still humans, so is their lifespan should be as so, or am I mistaken? Also I was wondering if you could expand on how magic works in this world (just to be certain I don't misunderstand anything).

Oh, and this has definitely piqued my interest ^^

@Bazmund This looks awesome, but I'd like to know more about the rules of magic, is it something learned or naturally occurring, can Dryads use magic in addition to the passive magic they're born with?

I'm probably interested if you have room.

Absolutely. Go for the half-elf, mate. Keep in mind that they're more likely to personally identify with whoever they were raised, however.

Ah. Magic. The magic here is a bit complicated, because most of it is stuck within artefacts that have existed since before the Sundering - most of which are locked up by the Heavens' Eyes anyway. Wizards and witches are possible, casting predefined spells, and so are sorcerers using magic more creatively, but all of these things are now tightly controlled by the Heavens' Eyes. Any overtly magical characters would likely be prime targets for Heavens' Eyes agents.

Which could be fun.

As for dragonkin lifespan, we'll say that they tend to live just slightly longer than average humans, due to their innate physical health and fitness. So... 90-100 years, assuming these humans live til 80 regularly. Keep in mind there are natural negatives to being dragonkin, however.

I think we should have room for you, but I might close it after this. As for the magic... well, it could theoretically be learned, but that would take a very, very long time, and probably involve exposure to artefacts that are currently under the control of the Heavens' Eyes. Even those born with it are rare, but still possible, however they tend to 'disappear' when their talent begins to show, thanks to the far reaching influence of the Heavens' Eyes, who are rumoured to have their own mind-bending mages.
