Name:
Nora Minder
Species:
Human
Age:
21
Gender:
Female
Personality:
Nora is very much the absent-minded professor stereotype. When she's at work on a project, it's usually all she can think or talk about, and she'll fuel herself with coffee and take-out to push through the all-nighters she willingly enters for the sake of the project. She is very competent and confident within her field of expertise. Her focus is so tight that she will often neglect her personal safety or awareness of her surroundings while she is working on "just one more adjustment."
However, get her outside that comfort zone (which includes basically any social situation or even just going outside at times), and she becomes withdrawn, hesitant, insecure, and shy. She relies heavily on the encouragement of others to keep going when she does not have a project, or when she is assigned to a task (like being in charge of the lodge) for which she feels she has no expertise.
Appearance:
Nora is a pale blonde human female standing at about five foot eight inches. Her slightly wavy short hair is done up in a bob, with strands regularly dropping around her blue eyes and wide face. She wears a slender pair of glasses with rims supporting the lenses, though when she adjusts these glasses, they regularly catch the light and mask her eyes every so briefly. She has a medium build slightly shrouded by the perpetual white labcoat she wears over her usually rather boring and practical shirt and tan slacks, the latter supported by suspenders usually quite artfully under her labcoat.
Powers:
While she doesn't have any actual super powers per se, she has such a knack for anything related to high technology and superscience that she often can come up with a jury-rigged device from available materials to counter a particular problem - if she is given time to assemble the device and deploy it. Expect to see her doing a lot of "reversing the polarity" or "adjusting the frequency" or maybe even just kicking the device to make it work properly.
In other words, she is essentially the scientist from action movies who makes weapons, gadgets, and vehicles for the heroes.
Strengths:
Her energy and motivation are unstoppable when she's working on a supertech project, and she is a specialist in all the relevant scientific fields to creating super-powered equipment, or equipment meant to combat supers (which includes robots, cybernetic enhancements, vehicles, weapons, and gadgets). Even when encountering entirely new things, she has a fair-to-good chance of identifying any properties relevant to her fields of interest.
Weaknesses:
She needs glasses to see properly; she's blind as a bat without them. She needs to be wearing her lab coat to feel secure enough to do anything. She's oblivious if she's focused on something, so it's very easy to sneak up on her when she's in this state (or difficult for her friends to drag her away from danger).
Background:
Nora Minder was teased as a young girl about her scientific interests - even in an enlightened world in a progressive location like Segaso City, children can still be very cruel. This has resulted in Nora being comfortable only in those areas she has direct control and interest in, leading to her social ineptness because she has deliberately focused her savant skills on building technology. Her focus on her schoolwork and neglect of the rest of the world allowed her to graduate early and become an intern at Cybertronics Unlimited, where her knack for developing advanced combat systems and devices was quickly turned to great advantage and advancement in the company.
However, her enthusiasm for her work - and her disregard for her own safety - have had their drawbacks. Most recently, a humanoid vehicle design of hers exploded violently and took nearly an entire lab with it. Miraculously, no one was seriously harmed, but the property damage was high enough that Nora's manager was pressured into arranging her "extended leave" to become the administrator of the lodge. The company can't afford to let her go, but until her lab is rebuilt, they don't want her causing any further damage, so they've shunted her off to a PR project in the hopes that she'll return with a fresh perspective and have learned a valuable lesson about collateral damage.
The assignment to the lodge is a punishment to her initially. She is worried that it won't go well, and it's depressing for her to be suddenly put in charge of others while simultaneously being deprived of a project to focus on. She plans on using every free moment of her time to stay cooped up in her room and try to figure out why her previous project exploded - and fix the issue so she can go back to what she feels she does best. It is only the presence of Boxcar that keeps her from completely losing hope and curling into a ball.
Misc. Notes:
Nora has a transponder that corresponds with the shock collar around Boxcar's neck. This allows her to shock him at any time she deems it necessary, or to communicate with him and locate him if he is not physically present. See Boxcar's sheet for details on what else the collar does.
Name:
Boxcar
Species:
Wolf! The kind on four legs, yes
Age:
Approximately 34 in wolf years
Gender:
Male
Personality:
Boxcar is intensely practical and dislikes it when others react too emotionally to a situation. He grumbles a lot and complains about the way "two-leggers" rely too much on stuff like "feelings" and "clothes" and "hands." He outwardly resents being treated like a "doggy" (though he secretly adores being given treats, belly rubs, pettings, and cuddles). He is often critical of people for being too soft.
But he is also still by nature a pack animal, and forms strong ties of loyalty to anyone he considers part of his "pack," even unconsciously. He will fight violently to the death to protect those under his care, and his advice, though gruff, comes from a heart that wants to do good, even if sometimes it doesn't come out that well. He is a wolf, after all; social nuance among two-leggers isn't his forte.
He is full of snark and will give his opinion bluntly, yet he is confused when people respond negatively to his statements. Mostly he just wants to be free, and he despises the cadre of scientists who benefit from his super power while keeping him caged like an animal. He prefers to be enigmatic about his origins, and is not above telling tall tales of how he became the way he is.
Appearance:
Boxcar is a gray wolf with white facial markings and underbelly fur, as well as several minor gradations of black, gray and white fur all over. He also has a curious pair of markings above his eyes that look suspiciously like eyebrows, which he uses flagrantly as part of his facial expressions. He is about as big and heavy as an average human, just on all fours instead of upright. He has startling yellow eyes that peer out from his furry face. He is usually wearing a collar (see misc. notes below for details on what it does).
Powers:
Aside from having human intelligence in a wolf body, Boxcar has the ability to sniff out super powers. What this means is that he can identify if someone has a super power, what type it is, and whether it is about to be activated. For example, he can tell if someone has a magic spell in effect on them, and whether it's a good or bad enchantment. He can tell if someone is psychic, cybernetic, has mutant/meta-gene powers, or any number of other power origins.
This power can be defeated - a cyborg could have parts specially designed to sound and smell like normal body parts, for example, or a magician may cast a spell that makes their magic undetectable. But as a general rule, if a power or weapon is about to be used, he can detect it and react accordingly.
Strengths:
Boxcar has the lean body of a wolf, including a sense of smell and hearing that goes well beyond that of a regular human being, a fur coat that protects him from cold weather to a degree, and he can certainly run a lot faster than most two-leggers. He also has the intelligence of a human, so he can make better use of his body than a normal wolf would. He has a feral agility and ferocious nature that lets him bound into battle for a bite, then leap away to evade injury.
Weaknesses:
Boxcar has no hands, and therefore, can't use weapons or tools with anywhere near the effectiveness of anyone who has opposable thumbs. He is somewhat color blind, too. He is often treated like an unintelligent and dangerous animal by strangers.
Background:
Boxcar is the result of a special genetics project done by a small rogue company that was bought out by Cybertronics Unlimited. It is unknown whether he is a wolf who was granted human intelligence, or a human transformed or transferred into a wolf's body, or something else entirely. The scientists in Cybertronics don't really care, since they are only interested in his unique ability to sniff out super powers, and have been trying to replicate this ability electronically.
Since these efforts have not turned out anything successful, and since the corporation decided to sponsor a lodge for superpowered individuals, it was determined to send Boxcar along with Nora as a way to further test his power while adding security and protection to Nora. This represents the closest chance to freedom Boxcar has yearned for, but he's stuck with a shock collar to force him to stay with Nora. He awaits an opportunity to get away, though he recognizes that Nora is certainly no harm to him and could certainly use his help...
Misc. Notes:
Boxcar has a shock collar around his neck. The collar is designed to go off if he goes outside a certain distance from the corresponding transponder (which is currently in Nora Minder's possession), or if he ever threatens the holder of the transponder with physical violence. This is designed to prevent him from escaping corporate custody or damaging the transponder. The collar also allows him to be tracked down electronically, and it keeps track of his vitals and the use of his power as data stored in the collar for later analysis. A small side benefit is that the transponder also acts as a communicator between him and the one holding the transponder.
