Celerity's personality is best described as a mix of immaturity and a bit of arrogance. Always thinking fast, Celerity is prone to wisecracks and other witty remarks, mostly to his opponents. With his powers, Celerity thinks that just about anything is possible for him, and will certainly act entitled to that regard. The best way to have him do something is to tell him he can't do it. Despite this entitlement, however, Celerity still likes the idea of being a hero very much. The sense of helping people is very fulfilling to him. And the fame? That's nice, too.
A brash hero who acts on his own whims and instincts, Celerity is the definition of
Chaotic Good.Civilian Personality
James is quite the charmer, given his celebrity status. Outgoing by nature, James' force of personality is part of how he became a big star in Hollywood. James also has a soft spot for his fans, of whom he adores greatly. James has a genuine desire to make everyone happy through his performances. It's the closest he thinks he could be to an actual superhero. Despite this, his wealthy lifestyle and fame has caused him to develop a snobbish attitude at times. A bit of his fame has gone into his head. One thing he definitely shares with his costumed persona is his arrogance. Still, also like his heroic self, James does sport a clear sense of right and wrong, and wouldn't do anything outright evil in nature.
Super abilities:
- Skills: Celerity's biggest skill is probably his charisma. His force of personality is what brought his acting career to the top, after all. Being a member of his high school's drama club as well as having experience playing multiple major roles in blockbuster films, Celerity's acting skills are nothing to scoff at, although he's no Marlo Brando. Celerity also sports basic hand-to-hand combat skills, taking some Self Defense classes from a few personal trainers he's hired in the past. Celerity also knows the basics of "Hollywood Kung Fu," from his various roles in many different action films. Celerity is by no means a master at these sort of martial arts, however. We don't need a Speedster knowing actual Kung Fu, anyway.
- Powers: As a speedster, Celerity draws his powers from the mysterious energy field known as the Speed Force. He can run at superhuman speeds, reaching up to Mach 20 speeds in normal circumstances. While he is able to exceed Mach 20 speeds in short bursts, prolonged use would risk him merging with the Speed Force itself. The speed generated in Celerity's body manifests as yellow lightning, which can react magnetically to metals and can shock a person. Celerity is also able to perform amazing feats with his superhuman speed, such as a limited form of Aerokinesis involving moving his body, or parts of his body, in circles at high speeds in order to create strong vortexes of wind, as well as accelerating his molecular frequency at high speeds to make his body intangible, avoiding projectiles and, in short bursts, even phase through other objects.
Being in tune with the Speed Force allows Celerity to run at such high speeds without the risk of damaging his body and, for the most part, the environment around him. This also covers Celerity in a "Speed Force Aura," which protects himself as well as other individuals propelled by the Speed Force from the harsh conditions of moving at mach speed, which allows performing feats such as saving individuals from burning buildings at such extreme speeds possible. This aura also gives Celerity superhuman durability, protecting him from things such as the high speed impact his punches deliver. The Speed Force also allows Celerity's body to instinctively react to moving at high speeds, and as a result, Celerity sports superhuman reflexes, perception, and agility in order to keep up with his speed. This also enhances his mental capacity, which allows him to process information faster than any human. Celerity is also able to heal at an accelerated pace, with any damage to his body almost instantly healed, and the extensive work the human body provides for a speedster to run fast is also automatically sustained by the Speed Force. As a side effect of this healing and self-sustenance, Celerity's metabolism is increased immensely; five whole large pizzas is just a "snack" to Celerity. - Gadgets: Celerity's gadgets include his iPhone 9. That's about it...
- Weapons: Celerity has a killer smile.
Civilian Occupation: Movie Star
Character History/Origin
James Chong was born and raised in Central City. His mother and father, Janet and Kenneth Chong, both worked very busy jobs, and were never really home to raise James as much. Growing up to be a rather crafty kid, James pulled all sorts of pranks in order to garner the attention of his parents. During one of his schemes, however, he found his father's old stash of comic books. James grew up being a huge fan of comic books as a result, reading and collecting many issues, both from today, and from the past. The comics he's read have taught him many things his parents weren't able to, most especially a clear sense of right and wrong. James' favorite hero is the Jade Mantis, an Actor Activist and founding member of the Impossibles, the Jade Mantis was once a Chinese immigrant, and became something of a symbol for Asian Americans to this day.
James grew to be a very outgoing teenager, inspired by the confidence of the heroes in his comic books. He joined the Drama Club in his High School, and even turned out to be its captain during his senior year, starring in many different productions in his local theater. It was there that his talent was discovered by a Hollywood agent. He couldn't forget his first ever role, a werewolf and the male lead in the classic Rom-Com
Good Boy. That movie kickstarted his career as an A-list celebrity. James loved the fame, but what he loved more was making people smile with his acting. As his career progressed, he started moving from romantic comedies to action films, in order to further be something close to a hero from his comics.
Almost a year ago from today, James was cast in a role that would change his life in more than one way. He was selected to play as the Jade Mantis in an upcoming biopic detailing the story of the Impossibles. Many big-name produces have always wanted to do a movie on the Impossibles, but they needed a big cast for it, one built off of Hollywood's best and brightest, and has been postponed several times in the past. Already a household name in Hollywood, a young, Asian-American star with an already promising career who's starred in many action movies, it was only natural he was chosen for the role. It was during the filming of this movie that resulted in Celerity being born...
One of the fighting scenes was staged to be filmed in an actual rainstorm, for authenticity. The Jade Mantis is currently fighting against a whole platoon of Nazis using only his bare hands. Of course, this probably never even happened, but Hollywood tends to exaggerate even in films based on true stories. Because of this scene, James was covered in synthetic blood made of some sort of chemical compound to be extremely similar to real blood. This compound is also super conductive to electricity, much more than water is. On that day, everyone learned why filming in a rainstorm is actually a bad idea...
The set was struck by lightning, creating a rather violent explosion. A few of the cast and crew suffered minor injuries, but it was James that was hit the worse, as the lightning practically struck him directly. James was rushed to the hospital, and the
Impossibles movie was, again, postponed indefinitely. The shock had caused James to fall in a coma, putting a long and uncomfortable pause to the actor's career.
When James had woken up, it was already eleven months later. His natural hair had changed to a white color, and he felt... faster. When he woke up, he didn't even check out of the hospital. It's almost as if he just disappeared. Even today, celebrity news is wondering where one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Jimmy Chong, ever went. Some say he permanently left the limelight after the accident, being terribly scarred from the burns he received when he was struck by lightning. Others believed that he had passed in his sleep, and that his funeral was made private to avoid the press. His devoted fans, however, believe that Jimmy
will make a comeback that'll definitely shake Hollywood up.
And the world wasn't ready for his comeback.
