Welcome To Belchester
You, my friend, have just found yourself in Belchester, the capital city of Merriedge. Likely for the courting season, no doubt! I'm also assuming this is your first year in the courts. If not, this will be a nice refresher course, hm? We'll start from square one, like what the world you live in looks like and a short history of the world, then on to specifically Merriedge and the other countries, along with the court, and finally, we'll get to know you.
This is the world we live in. We call it Voromia. We have, in the past, been incredibly war-stricken, mostly with the different countries vying for the same square foot of land. We have experienced wars over the littlest things though, such as a lost game of chess. We can blame the last king of Harathia for that one. Bit of a brat raised by a pushover nanny, something about being a bit off kilter...
Anyway! As a general rule, there are three alliances between the countries of Voromia. Wazatocia, Curuier, and Burlia are allied, Edochat and Harathia are allied, and finally, Merriedge and Stonia are allied. It makes an interesting dynamic during wartimes. Fortunately for you,
and for all of us really, we aren't currently in a great war, though there have been whispers of rising tension between Stonia and Edochat.
It would be worth your time to note that the wealthiest families from all countries send their children to Belchester during the season,
once they're old enough.
Merriedge
MEHR-ee-idge
Merriedge was birthed in 1057 by Reginald Merriedge after a nasty rebellion of Harathian workers. Reginald Merriedge and Lacey Belchester began their rebellion in 1052 by taking over a small riverside town, and the cause to overthrow the king of Harathia, who they felt was passively killing off the lower class for the sake of his own wealth. By 1055 the entire country was divided, and civil war ensued. The Harathian king was killed, and the widowed Queen split the land in half to end the war. Rebels with Merriedge, and loyalists staying in Harathia. The capital was named after Lacey, and the country after Reginald.
Over the next 500 years, the border between the two countries fluctuated wildly, being traded back and forth like secrets. Currently,
Merriedge and Harathia are neutral towards each other. A treaty is in place that is currently keeping both countries afloat with trade. Merriedge has a decent relationship with other countries. The country is allied with Stonia, as the eldest princess of Merriedge was wed to the second prince of Stonia.
Typical features:
Tanned (olive) skin, brown or black hair, green eyes, Medium to strong builds, moderate height
General terrain:
Plains, hills and mountains near the Harathia border, temperate
Stonia
stohn-ee-AH
Stonia is the youngest country on Voromia. Established in 1470, it is less than 100 years old. Originally untamed wilderness,
Stonia was established by Stone Blackship, a criminal not quite bad enough to hang, but not good enough to let roam the streets of Burlia. He, and a handful of other criminals, were tossed into the wilderness. By almost pure luck, they found a foothold and are now rather well off.
Stonia is currently experiencing rising tension with Edochat. The country is allied to Merriedge. Their relationship with Burlia is very rocky. Other relationships are neutral.
Typical Features:
Lighter skin tones, brown eyes, white and blonde hair colors, bulky builds, wide height range
General Terrain:
Coniferous forests, year round snow in the northmost points, generally high altitudes
Burlia
BUR-lee-ah
Burlia is the most unremarkable of the countries, as it is thought of to be the most primitive and poor. Burlia was created by a settler many years ago, long before written language. A large percent of the population are hunters or fishermen. The soil in Burlia is not kind to a farmer. The larger cities are on the shore and by the Merriedge border,
where supplies are easiest to get. Life is not easy for Burlians, and because of this, it is rare to see Burlians in the court.
Burlia is currently on allied with Wazatocia, and in turn, Curuier. Relations are rocky with Stonia. All other country relations are neutral.
Typical features:
Very light skin, blue eyes, white hair, large, bulky builds, generally shorter
General Terrain:
Constant cold, coniferous forests and tundras, plateau over the ocean
Edochat
ee-DOCK-at
Land of milk and honey as some call it, Edochat is where most of the wealthiest suitors come from. Founded in 980, Enoch Vilchat and a troop of Harathian soldiers thought they had discovered Eden. Fruit, vegetables, and fresh water abound, Enoch Vilchat and his troops abandoned their country to live where they are. The current inhabitants are usually not too far of a stretch from the original founders. Edocheans tend to be lazy and live frivolously off the land where they live. Due to the appeal of the land, there is a wide mix of people.
Edochat is allied to Harathia. Tensions are rising between Edochat and Stonia. All other relations are neutral.
Typical Features:
There is no average
General Terrain:
Rolling hills, soft soils, naturally occurring flower fields, deciduous forests
Harathia
HA-rawth-eeah
The oldest country, and the most aggressive. WIP
Curuier

About 75 years ago, the King of Merriedge proposed a treaty through the idea of bringing the people of each country together. This was the first courting season, where the young people of each country gathered for a Spring full of parties in the capital of Merriedge, and look for someone to marry to bring peace between the countries.
While the season is no longer about peace, it is still about marriage. It's mostly to preserve your family's wealth and get children out of the house, many younger folks treat it like their own romantic fairytale. And that's why you're here! To marry. Or the person you're accompanying is.

So then, what about you?
