Ship Knowledge - 2
Identifying Marks: A golden hoop runs through the lobe of his left ear, the jewelry lacks any particular shine, signifying that it's been there for a long time. A faded, pale blue tattoo of a thick line runs underneath the end of either eye, connecting at the bridge of his nose. Although his body is covered in the nicks and scars of various hostile confrontations of the past, a much bolder and more fresh mark, a brand of the letter 'K', rests on Justin's right hand.
Attire: The man dresses rather simply, usually in a rough canvas like shirt piece covered by a leather tunic and tightly fitting cloth pants. A rugged black cloak fits around his shoulders and flows against his backside. Large rubber boots adorn his feet, lacking any lacing or design, with steel toes. The only accessories to this dress are a black bandanna around his neck, the holster to a flintlock pistol at one side, and the sheathe of a rapier to the other.
Demeanor: Justin seems both rushed and collected all at once. The man has the scrutinizing eyes of someone who analyzes every detail, seemingly pondering every course of action very meticulously. Despite the very deliberate movements and actions that he takes, it all changes once the man opens his mouth. Justin tends to speak rather quickly, though not in a way which makes him hard to understand. He is a very light hearted man, often spewing a joke or offering his two cents, usually in a good mood. Yet, it is obvious that he is not shy to the very serious nature of his work, and as one spends more time with him, comes to notice that Justin isn't as lackadaisical without his Dust... and sometimes, they may witness him directing his conversation toward someone who isn't there.
Background: There had never been much to Justin's name. Hailing from a poor family in the slums of Guillan, it had seemed that there was never much opportunity within reach. His mother was either pregnant or sick through most of his life and his father spent what little extra money there was on alcohol. Justin's brothers and sisters were much younger and he had found himself taking care of them in his childhood. Because of this upbringing, the boy had never received an education. It was at the young age of twelve that Justin's mother had died. Refusing the responsibility of taking care of his siblings and wishing to avoid his pathetic excuse of a father, Justin had fled to the streets, becoming another orphan beggar.
Living on the streets as a youth is where Justin truly began building his repertoire of criminal activity. Where had lacked opportunity at home, Justin found that there was plenty to be had if it was taken from others. Petty theft, pickpocketing, and odd jobs were just the start. Meanwhile, he had begun befriending other children of the street and making connections in the darkest niches of Guillan. Some of the career criminals observing the developing ne'er-do-well over the years had even reckoned that the lad had a future in this lifestyle.
Although this was existence to Justin for some time, a remaining glimmer of hope to escape poverty and to do good in the world had burst from his soul, and at the age of 19, joined the Royal Navy and became a mariner of the sea. It seems that fate had other, more mischievous plans for young Justin, however. A year into service and the vessel he crewed had been attacked by pirates. Due to the unsuspecting ambush,
the navy crew had been mostly slaughtered, Justin only spared as an indentured servant, and the ship capsized.
Five more years at sea, serving under a pirate captain, had changed Justin. Despite his youth on the streets, it was this expedition that taught him the more grotesque, intense side of the criminal underworld. Pillage, rape, and intoxication were a daily function. Though it was a learning curve to the young man, Justin had come to both thrive in and enjoy this experience. Destruction and chaos were the routine up until the captain of his ship had died, and Justin's indentured servitude had come to an end. With new skills and a small amount of start up cash, the bloodlusting mariner decided to return home. It was around this time that his mind had gradually begun to slip due to copious amounts of stimulant abuse.
Recalling old friends and reviving decayed connections, Justin immediately delved into the criminal world of Guillan once again. People had started hiring him for armed robbery and hit jobs, considering the skills with firearms that he had acquired at sea. Even though he was apt to come out of each job with decent reward, Justin did not hold onto it for very long. It seemed that Dust, alcohol, tobacco, and whores were all that he cared for. As time progressed, Justin's mind seemed to slip more and more. They began to call him 'bark', as he would often yell out at invisible mockers.
Years went by, Justin chose to do less and less work as he grew more tired of the life. To this day, he takes a job here or there in order to feed himself... and stay high. This has kept him perfectly content, despite living in a self made junk - shack tucked away in one of the slum alleys. Justin's connections have fallen with time, though his street credibility and his reputation have remained fairly strong.
