Things changed dramatically when she dove headlong into a nook she thought would be secure, a determined guard on her tail. Instead of safety she found another child, who made enough noise when she slammed into him that they both had to flee. By way of apology she split the loaf of bread she'd stolen with him once they escape. It wasn't long before Ziotea and Rodion were inseparable, and towards the end of their time on the streets they pulled off a number of dramatic thefts. The boy might not have been particularly skilled, but he was fast and did well with machinery -- and it was far easier to get away if there was a huge ruckus in the opposite direction. Ziotea's ether had an affinity for heat and explosions, and she was able to pull off some truly spectacular distractions. <- quoting Shylarah
Rodion first met the shorter woman when she bumped into him as children. Of course, it wasn't in a friendly manner as she was on the run. But that single moment turned into a lifetime of friendship. However, Rodion has started to feel something different. A quickening of the heart whenever her fiery hair comes into view. His palms becoming sweaty when she leans in close. His mouth drying up when she talks. However, the most terrifying part: He can hardly focus on anything without her near. Whenever she is away his thoughts will turn to her, often making him pause in the middle of his work and just sit there for hours on end. He tries, as hard as he can, to hide these emotions, but it doesn't work. Instead, the longing becomes almost unbearable, forcing him to seek out her companionship.
Rodion doesn't know if she feels the same way or not, as such, he keeps quiet. He is afraid of losing his closest friend, but desperately wants her to become something more than a friend.
(Keep in mind that Rodion, with his fucked up way of understanding emotions is absolutely terrified of these feelings and doesn't understand them at all)
@OppositionJ I think Hassan would probably get along great with Tatiana - they're the most casual of the inquisitors so far, and I think they'd have a lot to bond over with their mutual insecurities about their roles and their tendency to avoid people outside of the squad. I'd even go so far as to say he's probably have some (possibly unrequited) romantic attraction to her that he has a great deal of trouble with. I think it'd be a fun challenge to his character, seeing as how he struggles sometimes with interacting with people he can't simply command. Of course, that's only if you're comfortable with it, of course - if you don't like it, they can be just good friends.
I love the idea. I'm totally down with the implied romance and seeing how that would play out. Your idea works perfectly for me.
I'll try to get out some other blurbs of information on relations to other characters soon.
@Drakey id rather have the machine be responsible for the scar above his eye, if that's chill with you... I like the idea of you making the shield a good deal - gives him more of a reason to actually tolerate your lack of religiosity :P
Height/Weight: (You have got to be kidding me. I'll work on this...*sigh*) 4'9? (I have an irl person I am going to ask for numbers, since she's the size I want Ziotea to be ^.^;; )
Race: Omestri-Lanostran halfbreed.
Appearance: With bright red hair, eyes closer to gold than to brown, and a very distinctive etheric signature, there's mistaking Ziotea for anything but Omestri, and a strong one. She keeps her bright hair short, never past shoulder length, and often ties it back somehow. She has a round face and heavy brows often draw together in a frown. Her skin tans easily where it is frequently exposed to the sun, namely her face and arms. The rest is fair though marked with various scars she's picked up over the years. Of particular note are the marks of whippings on her back, a set of ragged parallel lines from deep slashes gouged across one hip, and the puckered dent where she had a chunk ripped out of the opposite shoulder at one point.
She's a tiny little thing, very short and deceptively thin, but she is muscle and sinew without an ounce of extra fat. This makes her rather bony, and combined with her narrow hips and a general lack of bust she could be mistaken for a boy with a particularly pretty face from a distance. She's learned how to pick clothing that flatters what little figure she has in order to compensate, but even that can only do so much. The armor she wears is heavier than that of many Inquisitors, and she favors sturdy gauntlets with vambraces, greaves that protect the front of her knees, and a full brigadine and tassets in addition to her breastplate. She carries a round curved and spiked shield with a diameter about the same as the length of her arm and a winged spear, as well as a small quiver of darts.
Personality: Ziotea is cynical and misanthropic. The world is a terrible place, and people as a rule are awful. Those who raised her for her first few years hated Lord Varya and the conquering Varyans, and she picked up some of the attitude even though she has few specific memories from that time. She was not so sullen as a child, but the harsh life of an urchin turned her rough, as a certain amount of callousness was necessary to survive. She saw all the different ways one person could mistreat another, and she realized that
and her loathing for the god that called for the subjugation of all others combined with her fear of the Inquisitors that instructed them to turn her into a hard young woman
A description of your character's personality-- their strengths, flaws, religious views, ect.
Background: Ziotea was born to Adrestia, a Lanostran priestess with a gift for preserving life as well as taking it, captured in an early raid on the nation before the war officially began and forced to serve as a Varyan slave. Her father was a pureblooded Omestrian, one of the many ether slaves the woman was forced to look after. With the help of the members of the Lady's Anger, Adrestia feigned a stillbirth and had the girl smuggled out. Unfortunately there are so many ways for a revolutionary to die, and those that had care of Ziotea met with one such, leaving her with only vague memories of kind people that looked after her before her days on the street, as well as a lasting disgust with the ways of the world. ,Fortunately for her, they'd kept her hair dyed black, and by the time it had grown enough to be an issue she'd added a coating of grime and learned to keep her hood up at all times.
The life of a young child on the street is a hard one, but the urchins have a rough camaraderie and even a tiny girl like Ziotea could learn enough to scrabble out a meagre living.
They couldn't escape capture indefinitely, of course. That sort of thing caught the attention of a warpriest, one General Vasaliev. He snagged the boy first and as close as she was to Rodion, Ziotea had a crippling fear of the Inquisitors. She didn't know why one of the elite was after them, and she didn't really want to know. Rodion might lose a hand, or be pressed into service, but if they caught /her/ she would end up an ether slave, doomed to a half-life of agony. She fled, and upon his return with a promise of amnesty for her she still required a great deal of convincing before she'd come anywhere near their stern benefactor.
If life on the streets was difficult, life at the Red Seminary was brutal. Training demanded every shred of strength and willpower Ziotea possessed, and she's grown into an exceptional fighter, skilled with her weapons alone but truly devastating when she uses her ether. She's had little time for hobbies at the seminary, driven by her heritage to enjoy fighting and forced by the unruly nature of her ether to take extra time to learn to use it well. If she didn't concentrate well enough, any spell she cast tended to blow up in her face -- literally. This was in addition to the trail of broken dishware and shattered glass she left when stressed, and the need to compensate for that sort of thing was another demand on her time.
She is looking forward to getting away from Varya, though she is less sure about their mission. Perhaps Eluria will hold answers to the questions she doesn't know to ask. Perhaps a simple change of scenery will keep her from being so restless. Either way, she's ready.
Talents/Ethereal Abilities:
Ziotea has a larger than average resevoir of ether to draw on. Her Omestri heritage is strongly evident, but the true nature of her ether is...explosive.
Literally.
It helps to have an amulet to draw on, but even without she is able to generate bursts of concussive force that can be devastating if properly applied. Initially she had major difficulty controlling the strength and aim of such attacks, and more than one sparring match turned lethal when she misjudged. She's refined her skill over the years, and she can use her ether internally easily enough, but any use of ether beyond her person comes with a risk, and she's best kept away from anything that requires restraint. Furthermore, this aspect of her power means that a number of basic skills are beyond her. Simple things like heating a rock to boil water, cooking an egg, kindling an ether lamp, carrying additional weight -- she can do none of these things. Rocks and eggs explode, lamps shatter and the liquid ether evaporates, and while she can /lift/ things, actually carrying them for any length of time is an issue.
However, force can be used in countless ways, and what she lacks in finesse she makes up for in creativity. She uses her ether to hit with disproportionate strength, far beyond what is expected from someone her size, and to support her shield when deflecting attacks, including bullets though these pack a big punch if she doesn't catch them just right -- she broke her arm in an early attempt. She can add height to her jumps, and fling herself forward with considerable momentum. Combining the latter with a shield bash makes for a particularly nasty attack. Her darts leave her hand at high speed, even without being thrown, and she has good aim, able to hit a target at (50-100 paces?)
Application of force at a weak point in an object can break it, as she has demonstrated on countless -- some objects can be made to explode. She can knock chairs over -- or poorly built market stalls, as she did as a child. An unexpected shove can put opponents off balance or even knock them down. A stronger, less focused push can move them a few feet, though she's determined that this is not usually a useful technique, save occasionally for driving enemies towards her.
Ziotea is unusual in that she can draw not only on her own ether and her personal totem, but also nearby sources, though she cannot use them efficiently. This exacerbates the problem of her unpredictable offensive casts, though the ability itself wasn't uncovered until a couple years after the rest. With Rodion's help she's experimented with pulling ether from nearby creatures as well. She's managed to siphon small quantities from animals, with some difficulty, but the only successful attempt to pull from another person resulted in Ziotea and Rodion both passed out on the floor of a destroyed lab, and they've abandoned the idea for the moment.
Alternatively, instead of drawing on nearby ether, she can use some of her own to negate ether others are actively using. The technique is difficult and drains her strength far quicker than any of her other skills. This means that she is most effective countering single attacks, instead of undoing things like personal buffs or crafting an anti-ether shield. She still needs to refine the skill, as careless use of it will result in a loud explosion instead of simple negation.
Ziotea is skilled with her weighted spear and shield. She knows how to fight unarmed, though she prefers not to. She can use ether to punch hard enough to break bones if she must, and she knows a number of throws and pins, but if someone gets a good grip on her that's the end. Her ether is unsuited to supporting lengthy grapples, and her size leaves her at a major disadvantage. Her best bet is to slip quickly free of an attempted grab, then use a few quick strikes and an ether push or a throw and to get out of grabbing range. From there she can make a clean escape, or keep moving and use makeshift weapons and her ether to wear the opponent down.
She's not much slower than people with longer legs, though she worked hard to be able to say as much without resorting to the use of ether. Her physical endurance is excellent, as is required of everyone at the Red Seminary. Her etheric endurance is superb, but her ability with sustained casts is very low, and trying to do generally results in her signature explosive backfire.
Personal Seal: ((something in a sunburst -- probably a spear)) and the sunburst pattern in general, which adorns her shield.
Character Relationships:
Once the cast is chosen, we're going to collaborate on creating the shared histories between the different people of our group. Your characters can be anything from friends, enemies, lovers, ect. Remember, you've all spent your time years training in the Red Seminary together and have suffered and bled throughout your time there, so your relationships must be forged of your experiences during that time together.
@shylarahAwesome character! Well-worth the wait! I think you did a really great job with her ether powers and her strengths and weaknesses. There's only one thing that should be changed. General Vasaliev wasn't a priest, but a member of the Secular Army, as in, regular soldier. Also, this goes for you and @Drakey both, but could you make it so that Vasaliev (god, why I keep reading his name as Vaseline? bahaha) isn't something as high-ranking as a general? I just realized it wouldn't make sense for a full-fledged general to be hanging out in the streets and taking an interest in street urchins. Could you make him a lieutenant instead? I think that'd make more sense.
Also, could you give me an idea of how powerful her concussive blasts are currently? Like, would she be able to blow apart an armored tank? I'd be comfortable if that was where her power level was currently at.
Shylarah, I love her!!!! Also, we should probably start PMing for our character's shared backstory and interactions, since these will need to be more in depth (I would imagine having known each other nearly our entire lives) and awesome (just cause we're bloody awesome and our characters are bloody awesome)
Love, I have changed my CS to reflect Vasaliev being a leutenant.
@Lovejoy >an armored tank >able to blow apart AN ARMORED TANK
...what. I must have read that wrong. You're ...okay with this?
I mean, I suppose if she used a large portion of her externally stored ether? But I was more thinking...say, blasting down a door from across a room, at best (and usually she'd use an enhanced kick or shoulder ram, because that's simpler). The idea of someone ripping apart a tank seems...
Well it seems OP, especially if she can trigger the blast /inside/ something. What stops her from shredding a person? ...Or every single monster we come across ever?
I suppose, in theory, a tank might have an aegis around it or overlapping with it that allows her magic to work more strongly, but that still leaves the issue of other humans. If I go a step further and say that she's drawing on the tank's etheric engine, then perhaps it's workable. But even then, I think that's less making the tank explode and more making some smaller part of the engine explode, which triggers a chain reaction. If that's the kind of strength she wields normally, then she'd be able to throw opponents across a room easily, and that seemed to be treading dangerously close to OP levels.
To be fair, I imagine most of our priests are not using much of their reserve ether if they can help it, as there will be no good way to replenish it without spending more time than they can likely spare? I imagine one or more of the group (perhaps even Ziotea...though if she screws up it'd be /bad/) might be able to help recharge the totems and such if they have a source to drain, but again, time and energy. Actually, I sorta figured that extraction of ether can be done by a priest with a relatively small device, it's just not usually because the machines are not only better at it, but they don't pass out afterwards from exhaustion. Back in the day young priest probably had to take turns draining the slaves because they'd need a day of rest before they could return to training. ^.^ Of course, in that setup one priest would have the equipment to drain a bunch of slaves at once for the same expenditure of energy.
If this doesn't sound reasonable, let me know, but I needed to figure out justification for why Ziotea couldn't draw ether from others. Or perhaps she can, but trying to drain another person with the ability to use their ether (Rodion) is significantly harder...the latter does seem reasonable. The device is probably just if you wanna store the ether instead of using it right away. ^.^
Uh, the tl;dr here is that we should talk power scaling and stuffs. I haz a discord, if you like?
@Drakey I kinda do need it to be an Inquisitor of some sort, or Ziotea wouldn't have run away, and that's important. ^.^;; I'm sure some low-level inquisitor (or inquisitor in training) might be tasked with catching a thief that can make things explode. Yes? *looks from Love to Drakey and back*
Yes definitely we should get details hammered out! Discord, skype, or even pm are all good, though I've got a serious preference for the first two.
Sorry for the delay, I got sidetracked by trying to find a picture with scarring on the face. Or a better one with the eyes showing. *sigh* I'm going to stop looking because this is gonna drive me nuts and I need to learn to accept good enough.
@shylarah I mean, the power level of the inquisitors as a rule seems to be 'Very high, but specific'. If Ziotea is the team's Heavy Weapons platform, I expect she would be able to basically just blow stuff/people apart, especially because it seems like a game more about RPing than combat anyway. I mean, look at the lineup so far - Rodion has invented a golem that is, functionally, a robot, Astraea can make any injury just sort of go away, Stina is a massive slab of muscle and metal who can run a three minute mile, Hassan is terrifying if you actually think about it, there's no telling what Tatiana could cook up... there ain't no wusses here.
As for how I think Hassan would get along with Ziotea... I have no idea. On one hand, he probably wouldn't mess with her too much on account of her being an angry human rocket launcher who's immune to his powers, and I doubt he'd really want any relationship with her beyond basic familiarity and friendliness, but at the same time she seems like a very anti-subjugation character and he is, by his nature, the ultimate subjugator, but maybe they'd get along in a work-sense due to their shared callousness towards their job? I don't know.
@shylarah Honestly, the way I envisioned it was that Inquisitors are pretty damned powerful, even the young recently ordained ones like us. If a squad of 7 inquisitors were to go up against a squad of 50 regular soldiers, we'd win easily. The military, or at least the Varyan military, are a colossal but largely conscripted force, revolving more around numbers than might. Their tanks are pretty powerful (even though they're mostly churned out of factories) but I think any of us would be able to take one down if we worked together. I suppose if the tank pilot was an ace who had been operating it for twenty years they'd be able to make a decent fight out of it, but yeah.
And no, tanks don't have their own individual aegis. Remember, an aegis is not a device or machine, but a magic shield that's upheld by a Protector (it can be large enough to encompass over a hundred soldiers shoulder-to-shoulder). During the war against Lanostre, where huge armies went up against each other, separate Varyan divisions each had multiple Protectors in their ranks to uphold larger-than-usual aegis shields.
As for her power I was just picturing her casting a small explosion near the tank's vicinity, powerful enough to act like a grenade or something of the sort. Wasn't really thinking of her specifically targeting the tank's engine or anything. Basically, I think you overcomplicated what I meant a bit :p
So, just as precursor to my next point, I'm going to include this next bit inc ase it wasn't properly explained before: An inquisitor can use their own ether to power their magic, but doing so would be incredibly dangerous, since that's akin to like, fueling a flamethrower with two quarts of your own blood. Exhausting one's own ether is one sure way to leave yourself vulnerable in battle (it makes you pitifully weak and leaves you in a near comatose state), and that's something that the Seminary trains you not to do. Because of this, we all use vials of Omestrian ether that act as separate charges to power our magic. These individual ether vials are deposited into our catalysts (the devices we use to cast spells), and are then used up. So, for example, one ether blast would drain you of one ether vial, and you carry three of them on your person at all times, so you'd have five "spells" at your disposal per mission. If you really had to, you could dip into your own individual well of ether if it was some kind of life or death situation, but as mentioned above, it'd be really foolish and everyone would yell at you for it :p.
Now, Ziotea's ether drain ability. I think I misread this last time and wasn't able to give you a proper critique. I think this could be a cool secondary power, but I feel like it'd make most sense if she was only able to use her own ether pool to drain other sources, since that's the ether that she actually has control of, not someone else's ether that's sitting in a vial or something. Also, she wouldn't be able to add it to her own ether pool unless it was of the same compatible type (we'll have to come up with separate ether 'blood types" at some point). Now, this power in particular, would start off incredibly weak, and wouldn't even be worth using at first, since she'd be putting herself at a disadvantage whenever she used it. Eventually though, the cost to use this power will become less and less, and she'd be able to use a minuscule amount of her own ether to draw larger amounts. Does that make sense? This explanation was a bit wordy, but let me know if any of it was unclear.
I'm perfectly cool with her third ability, as long as you manage it correctly. :)
So yeah, as Sisyphus mentioned, inquisitors are basically the most powerful soldiers in the empire. There are only a scant few non-inquisitor soldiers who would stand a chance against us, and even those aren't exactly normal themselves. So yeah, when it comes to fighting other more experienced Inquisitors, we would easily be overmatched and would require strategy, cunning and luck to win let alone survive. That isn't even counting whoever we're going to fight in El, as that place and its military are a completely mystery. Demons aren't exactly easy to kill either, as they have their own defenses and quirks to deal with.
@Lovejoy hmmm. Well, if you have to have a vial of ether to use magic, then we have a lot of stray magic going off in children that makes little sense. And if a small amout of ether can supply a household for a year, and an inquisitor can use that up in /one/ attack...supporting armies just isn't feasible large scale without a vast number of slaves. Even Varya starts to strain credibility, and the other nations, including Lanostre, are suddenly unable to support any kind of strong fighting force.
Given that an actual fight consists of lots and lots of attacks, and that most of our inquisitors are using magic in one form or another with each attack or defense, a scant few vials of ether doesn't go very far. Enhance one spear thrust? quarter vial of ether. catch a strong blow, that's another quarter. Knock the guy down, that's your first vial drained. It's extremely inefficient.
I agree that Ziotea couldn't /keep/ any ether she drains. She has to release it, and she has to do so immediately. That means she can't just sap someone's totem and leave them dry unless she can release the resultant force somewhere, and she's not going to be able to control that force well (if at all). However, if she just wants to blow something up? There's no reason why pulling ether from that sort of place wouldn't work.
Given that everyone in Varya uses ether harvested from slaves (who all must have a type, and they aren't all Omestri because we know traitors and really bad criminals end up in there too), and that there aren't many Varyans of Omestri descent, this means that the ability to uses ether from another source isn't tied to the type. However a transfusion would be, as your body must accept it, and be able to keep it.
Think of Ziotea as AB+. She can use any type of blood that humans make. It gets a bit wonky because Omestri are probably 0-, but...we already said wonky science is a thing, and this is an analogy anyhow.
Also, if you can't drain ether from others, then how the heck is ether supplied in the first place? The machines came after the magic, and the magic must have been used by someone. That means there is some way for a person to take another person and pull out their ether. I imagine how severe the damage done depends on how much is taken -- given that the slaves are there for ether draining as much as they can to reach the peak ratio of ether per amount of time spent recovering, they obviously are drained a lot farther than anything Ziotea would be doing. Then again, this was back when I thought a little ether went a long way, that the vials were not 100% necessary (there should be a level of etheric exertion that is comfortable for a highly trained individual before exhaustion becomes an issue, just like with any other form of exertion), and that using one's own ether was tapped at a rate similar to that of what I thought a vial was (considerably more than it apparently is). I figured it was a decent tie-in to unpredictable strength, control issues, and a nullification ability, with the added fun of having something Rodian and Ziotea could experiment with, but if that's not the case then I'll discard it. Naturally she would have started out able to use it only in very minute amounts, which would mean she tired easily the first year or two until she figured out what was going on and learned to do it better.
If you want to handle the fact that the drained ether types and the casters' types don't match, perhaps each priest must tune their vials/totems/whatevers, and they do so in advance. It takes time, but it means they can use that ether as easily as they can their own. Untuned ether isn't as effective, and costs additional energy, so there's really no reason not to. Tuning might even be done like a signature -- everyone's is different. Powerful casters probably could use someone else's totems, but they'd need to be desperate, as the exertion to counter that tuning is considerable -- just shy of draining a human, most likely, as extracted ether undergoes a purification process so that it can be used. Because Ziotea can nullify the effects of ether, she can bypass someone else's tuning, and use it in a raw state....ehhh, the idea is breaking down a little. "surrounding sources" means "other people's totems, and any untuned vials (like in machinery)", and draining other people in a fight is never going to be an effective technique....*waffles*
I'm just spitballing here, really. Hm, what looks good out of this mess?
Lessee,,,
Extracted ether is purified, "raw" ether isn't as effective as that tuned to one's self, using one's own ether is risky as the closer you are to empty the weaker you get. Untuning/retuning a vial is most likely feasible, but it'd take a bit longer than the initial tuning. A few minutes, nothing major, but enough that you can't go around doing it in the middle of a fight. And it allows vials to be passed from one person to another based on who needs them. Common sense dictates that if anyone can use an untuned vial, one does not wish to leave them lying around. I imagine physical proximity is necessary. Ziotea can use her skill for nullification to get around the issue of ether signatures and tuning, letting her make use of other people's stored reserves at a level slightly less than she'd be able to use raw reserves. She must use her own personal ether for this spell, meaning she does not do so without good reason.
This sound good?
Anyhow, the idea was less to make Ziotea able to KO others by draining them, and more for depriving them of stored external reserves, although she'd need to spend some quantity of her own to do so (the amount needed for a cast of nullification). I'm up to it being her own personal ether as opposed to what she has in a totem, that sounds reasonable. It means she's had to learn not to do it unless she wants to. It'd also flip her negation ability to something a bit easier (as long as the magic is right near her, mostly offensive spells targeting her or enhanced attacks; other stuff is still difficult and draining) and place ether draining as her weakest, given that it requires nullification, a good way to release the power (or perhaps an empty storage unit for transfer? ...eh, best not) and then the handling of release cast itself.
On the topic of power scaling, it doesn't matter how powerful someone is, if you can fling a metaphysical grenade right at them -- and Ziotea's learned to be quite accurate in where she sets off her blasts -- they are not going to be a threat for very long unless they can somehow negate it. I also saw concussive force as less-than-focused -- she can do pinpoint precision and shatter something, but it requires concentration that she just doesn't get in the middle of stabbing and bashing and being stabbed and bashed.
And I'm now wondering just how many vials we need to take with to be able to rely on fighting with magic outside of Varya.
Alright, before I buckle down on this sheet, I wanna contribute back to this power level conversation.
I severely misunderstood the "use" of magic in this RP. I think most of us need to make the mental adjustment from "battle mages" to "fighters with badass emergency magic."
I imagine that if all seven of us used one vial of external ether a day, and accounting for fuel to travel to the continent as well as back... We would have half a year? I don't quite remember how large the ships are, and I'm also assuming that none of the hundreds of other people are using ether. This is "ace in the hole" level stuff. If 1 vial can run the necessities and amenities of a household for one year, I can totally believe that it could cause a sizable explosion from a highly trained (if young) professional.
With this in mind, I'd like to ask about visual illusions. I would think that Ilya (the name I've decided on, since my character is Varyan) would take pains to extend his reach of water spells to work with light and create false images. Upon contact, of course, they would be revealed as the thick mist they are, and the attention to detail required would doubtless require Ilya's full concentration - years of practice or not.
We didn't really talk about etheric magic and children, so I'll use Ziotea as an example. When she was a child, she could use her unique ability, but in no way was it as powerful or focused as it is now after twelve years of etheric training. She could knock over doors and merchant stalls, but she wouldn't have been able to destroy a tank. She would also most likely have been pretty winded every time she used her power as a kid. So yes, children do use magic spells and suffer an ether debt as a result, but the magic children use is several magnitudes weaker than what they eventually learn as Inquisitors, and so is the cost. Remember how insane some of our abilities are in comparison to what they looked like when we were children. Ragnar for instance could only summon a solitary aegis when he was a kid, but can now summon an aegis large enough to cover a hundred people and keep it maintained for as long as he needs to. Their magic has grown by leaps and bounds, and so has the ether cost of these abilities. The Red Seminary wants its Inquisitors to be the terrors of the world, and since they have ample ethereal stock to fuel this magic, they don't put a limit on how powerful they allow a pupil's magic to become. Really, I think you're over-complicating this a bit. Think of your spells as like, your "special move" in anime or what have you. It's something you don't rely on all the time, but can bust out when you really need to put a hurting on the enemy.
By the way, the whole blowing up tanks thing... I only suggested it because honestly, her current magic abilities seemed kind of weak in comparison to everyone else's. Stina can lift a thousand pounds for christ's sake! Tatiana can summon demons! Remember the word I used to first describe spells, "miracles"? I meant that! You can go a bit crazy with your abilities, just as long as they're limited in some way and have room for growth, and all of you have done a great job of keeping your characters balanced, it's just that offensively I would've liked her to be a bit more dangerous. I'll tell you right now, the other Inquisitors out in the world can do some crazy shit. Still, if you'd rather keep her abilities as you wrote them, that's fine by me.
There's one concept that I talked about a little bit in the OP, and those are general etheric abilities that even soldiers can use. Here, I'll repost that bit here:
"Besides these 'ascended' ether skills, most common soldiers and all priests are taught the ever-important basic skill of 'ether manipulation'. Every human being has the capacity to learn how to control their own ether, as this allows them to augment their own natural abilities by a set amount. Common infantry are all taught to manipulate their ether to augment their strength and reaction time to a level above ordinary civilians. The level of skill in regards to ether manipulation varies by individual, as well as the pooled amount of ether within human beings. It is known that children with a higher pools of ether within them are sought by the church to become priests and inquisitors."
So, the amount of ether you need to do this is minuscule, since even soldiers can do it. A soldier for instance can focus his ether to be able to run a lot faster, or to help steady his aim when it's freezing outside. This will cost a bit of ether, enough that they'll be a bit winded and sluggish afterward, but it wouldn't require a vial of Omestrian ether, which is only used for really powerful magic.
In addition to these common ether skills, there are some that are slightly more specialized, like the personal aegis, or "paling", and the spellblade (I swear I was gonna talk about these eventually!). These two are the most common in the specialized category, and are among the first things that children learn how to conjure in the Red Seminary (ordinary soldiers have the capability to learn these as well, but it would be much more difficult for them). The paling is a small ethereal shield (which covers your whole body, but only yours) that an Inquisitor can conjure at will. Depending on how powerful a warpriest makes it, it can withstand anything from bullets to actual spells from other magic users. Even the weakest paling can stop bullets and melee attacks from common soldiers, but when fighting against a rival inquisitor, a stronger one is needed. Think of the paling as a suit of armor that negates damage, but shatters after taking too much. Real talk? It's what makes it so that we can have cool magical battles without the combatants dying immediately in this RP!
Pieces of armor can also be enchanted to continuously have a magical paling, like Stina's shield and helmet, but repairing them and re-enchanting them after they become damaged takes a decent amount of time.
The spellblade is a streak of ethereal light made physical and honed to extreme sharpness that a warpriest can summon and then wield as a melee weapon. Spellblades are considered an Inquisitor's traditional weapon (the crest of the Red Seminary itself is a spellblade and paling interlocked within a red circle), as it is what the inquisitors of antiquity used to wage their battles. These days, inquisitors typically choose to fight using their own chosen weapons, and only resort to using their spellblades in battle if they lose their other armaments. Spellblades are also typically used in ceremonial duels, as it most strongly symbolizes an inquisitor's power. For instance, the strongest inquisitors can summon spellblades that can easily cut through the strongest paling.
For a trained inquisitor who has achieved a certain level of mastery in etheric control, spellblades and palings don't require all that much ether to summon. While they do require a level of intense concentration to keep them manifested, it is no difficult thing for graduates of the Red Seminary.
Now, Inquisitors are the only members of the clergy who fight in battle, thus out of all of the thousands of priests serving the Church, there are only about 300 active inquisitors (not many survive the Red Seminary, after all) in Varya. Only inquisitors use Omestrian ether to power their weapons and spells, the soldiers of the Secular Army are not allowed to use, and don't require, such a potent source of energy. As I mentioned before, most SA soldiers are conscripts who wield rifles that work with general ether-- the white kind that is harvested from animals and can easily be synthesized-- and armored vehicles like tanks use this as well. So, basically, regular SA soldiers are trained in ether manipulation and get by on their own skills, while Inquisitors are basically nigh superhuman death machines who also rely on ether manipulation (though it is more specialized) but also require Omestrian ether now and then to unleash their most powerful attacks.
Moving on to Ziotea's ether draining ability.
"I agree that Ziotea couldn't /keep/ any ether she drains. She has to release it, and she has to do so immediately. That means she can't just sap someone's totem and leave them dry unless she can release the resultant force somewhere, and she's not going to be able to control that force well (if at all). However, if she just wants to blow something up? There's no reason why pulling ether from that sort of place wouldn't work."
Agreed on that last bit, but when did I say that she couldn't keep the ether she takes? As long as its the right type, she'd be able to restock her pool with it. If I said something otherwise before, I'm sorry! I probably got confused.
"Given that everyone in Varya uses ether harvested from slaves (who all must have a type, and they aren't all Omestri because we know traitors and really bad criminals end up in there too), and that there aren't many Varyans of Omestri descent, this means that the ability to uses ether from another source isn't tied to the type."
Not everyone uses ether harvested from slaves. Omestrian ether is incredibly expensive and thus out of reach for most Varyan citizens. Most people use the white ether gathered from animals, which is the most common type and available to most citizens.
In regards to the bloodtype thing, let's go over the facts. An Inquisitor essentially has two pools of ether when they go into battle-- 1. their own pool, which is tied to a type (A, B, ect) 2. the Omestrian ether kept in a number of vials on their person (also tied to a type), which is what they use to fuel their big magic spells. Ziotea can drain both types, but can only use her own ether to do this, so, this skill would fall under the "general ether manipulation" umbrella. This skill is also unfocused, so it takes currently takes a large amount from her own pool. Now, as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) she can drain non-Omestrian and Omestrian ether, put it in a syringe, and stick it in her veins (or, if you want a more elegant solution, maybe it seeps through her skin and directly into her bloodstream, it's fine with me). The only way that this would actually restore her own depleted pool is if the new ether being brought in is of her own type. If it was any other type, it would not work and would probably have adverse effects. Does this sound right so far? I think I have it right.
Anyway, I think the main issue is that you might've forgotten about the whole "general ether manipulation" thing that allows soldiers and Inquisitors to fight without using Omestrian ether, (as well as the existence of white ether), which is what I think the rest of your post deals with. Now that I cleared that up, I think it should all work fairly well. Unless there's something I missed, please let me know if that's the case.
I was honestly confused about the whole ether tuning thing and didnt really understand it that well. I think it might be a bit overly complicated. I know the system I came up with isn't perfect by any means, but I think it makes enough sense. Again, I might've missed something here that makes it crumble all apart, but I think I explained everything well enough at the top of this post.
I was assuming that both of Stina's abilities would fall under the purview of not needing a vial btw, being aware of the cost it would have on his body post-fight
*flailing* I KNOW THERE'S STUFF THAT STILL NEEDS WORK AND EDITS I DIDN'T MAKE BUT IT'S ONE AM AND I'M NOT SRUE WHERE MY ATTENTION WENT. And also bedtime. So I'm dropping this here, and will work on it more most likely tomorrow. ^.^;;
Appearance: With bright red hair, eyes closer to gold than to brown, and a very distinctive etheric signature, there's mistaking Ziotea for anything but Omestrian, and a strong one.
She saw all the different ways one person could mistreat another, and she realized that humanity was anything but humane. The idea of people as bad didn't solidify until later, but it had its beginnings here.
The tales about what was done to ether slaves, heretics, and rebels (only these were called traitors) were terrifying. Ziotea knew her mother had been a strong and defiant woman. She knew the people that looked after her those first few years were members of some secret group that hoped to rebel -- and she learned that her flame-colored hair marked her as Omestrian and loathsome at best, heretical at worst. She knew the Inquisitors came to take bad people away, and she remembered clearly being told to run, and seeing black coats stitched with red dragging the two people she loved off when she dared to peek out of her hiding place a couple blocks away.
When she entered the seminary, she was a frightened waif of seven, smaller than all the others and with a habit of breaking things. She learned of acts even worse than those committed on the streets, and she felt nothing but disgust for a god that would call for his people to do such things, to slaughter and conquer and drain people for ether as she saw them being drained (the reality was so much worse than any story). The Lady followed by the two in her earliest memories was no better, for she'd ordered her people to go along with it -- indeed, a number of half-remembered stories from her childhood claimed that the Lanostrans were not losing at all, making her little better than a coward. The other fallen remnants were even weaker, and none of those from the far lands had ever come to Varyan lands People were awful and the gods either didn't care or else encouraged them.
And she was no exception, for when she'd been given the choice between looking after her own well-being and trying to help her only friend in the world, she'd run away. What hope was there in a world like this?
The answer was none at all.
Ziotea has turned into a hard woman who never smiles, save in battle. She feels a fierce joy at prevailing over a difficult opponent, and if she is a child of Lanostre as she knows she is then there is little reason not to enjoy it. She speaks harshly, even when she isn't trying to. She resents being forced to fight, forced to help the cause of the god she loathes and surrounded by people who don't even realize that he is not the salvation they make him out to be. Her general disposition is irritable, often angry, and she's been known to harbor a grudge for years. She likes arguing, and often plays demon's advocate in discussions.
She is not particularly friendly, and has few good friends. She does not mind this, preferring the company of Rodion to all others when she doesn't just want to be alone. Her form of friendship is strange, manifesting most often as simply being near another person and liking it, or else constantly challenging them. She does not take compliments well in any area save combat, and even then they can be hit or miss. Attempts to scare or intimidate her now earn her ire, particularly if she is successfully frightened. Actual fear, the sort felt when facing a dangerous opponent -- the sort that helps an Inquisitor stay alive -- also angers her, and makes her all the more determined to win. She doesn't give up easily once she gets it in her head to do something, and there's indications that this might get her in trouble in the future.
At the Red Seminary, people know Ziotea as she is, instead of as she appears. She is no longer frightened or even remotely shy, and if truly provoked she can be vicious and potentially violent. It is hard to anger her to such extremes now, given her general disdain for everything, but when she was a little younger -- once she'd gotten over being crippled by fear, in fact -- she had a very short fuse. Commenting on her appearance, particularly her height, was one sure way to infuriate her, though she has since become comfortable with herself, secure in her strength and her skill. She still has aggressive tendencies, but for the most part she keeps physical combat to the training yard and the battlefield. Still, they all know what she's capable of -- and combined with the stories that sprang up from her explosive ether and the number of deaths that occurred in her initial training (not a time when most are strong enough to kill an opponent with misapplied skills), a number of younger students are outright frightened of her. She can be intimidating to strangers too, though not as much as she'd like. In the end it comes down to whether her size and apparent weakness outweigh the reputation of the Inquisition and the threat of the wicked flames she resembles.
Though she wouldn't be able to explain why, Ziotea is perpetually restless and dissatisfied. Ever since she saw the world for what it truly was she's longed for something more, but she's no idea what that "more" might be. She has no real religion, doing what is expected of her to pay tribute to Lord Varya but without any sense of awe. She has no faith in humanity, knowing them to be selfish, cruel, and apt to turn on each other at the least provocation. And she has no hope for the world itself, because there is nothing that can change any of it.
Fortunately for her, they'd kept her hair dyed black, and by the time it had grown enough to be an issue she'd added a coating of grime and learned to keep her hood up at all times.
The life of a young child on the street is a hard one, but the urchins have a rough camaraderie and even a tiny girl like Ziotea could learn enough to scrabble out a meagre living.
They couldn't escape capture indefinitely, of course. [[That sort of thing caught the attention of a warpriest, one General Vasaliev.]] He snagged the boy first and as close as she was to Rodion, Ziotea had a crippling fear of the Inquisitors.
She's had little time for hobbies at the seminary, driven by her heritage to enjoy fighting and forced by the unruly nature of her ether to take extra time to learn to use it well, and to make up for what it just wouldn't do.
Ziotea has a larger than average reservoir of ether to draw on. Her Omestrian heritage is strongly evident in the color and strength of her ether, but the true nature of it is...explosive.
Literally.
[[needs work!]] She is able to generate bursts of concussive force that can be devastating if properly applied.
Her darts leave her hand at high speed, even without being thrown, and she has good aim, able to hit a target at a good fifty paces, possibly more if conditions are good.
Application of force at a weak point in an object can break it, as she has demonstrated on countless plates and vases, and some objects can be made to explode.
@Sisyphus Hassan -- he bothers Ziotea on an very basic level. He doesn't always realize when he uses his Word power -- and he does it often -- and she doesn't know that she's having to counter it, but something about the man just really bothers her, and it has since the day they met. It doesn't help that her reaction to humor from those she's not close to is a negative one, and that his constant goofing off gets on her nerves. He is one of the many people she has hurt badly while sparring, matched against her because they both fought dirty and it was thought her haphazard offensive abilities would counter his greater strength and size.
She waited for him to make the first move, he made some inane joke about the situation, they fought, she screwed up a cast and (insert injury here? broken bone? concussion? this was probably after she could be relied on not to kill an opponent, as he's a valuable asset and there's others that are more easily replaced) (at this point I'm thinking she sent him flying across the yard and into a wall for your choice of injury).
Not sure how that would affect his opinion of her, but I figure that was at least five, six years ago and might even have been the first time they met properly, since they're two years apart and that's forever in the development of young children.
On some level she's jealous of his cheerful nature. If he hangs out near Rodion she might put up with him, otherwise she probably avoids him as much as possible, because he puts her on edge. It's entirely possible that this is an actively adversarial relationship, but I'll let you decide if so and how much. If he picks on Rodion she will probably try to hurt him on top of any blasts she lets off by accident.
@OppositionJ Tatiana -- another lighthearted one. Ziotea doesn't mind Tatiana's presence nearly as much as she does Hassan's, perhaps because the other girl wasn't entirely certain of where she belonged. It also helps that Tatiana was never particularly good at fighting, and so Ziotea could use basic skills against her and never felt particularly endangered, even at the very beginning.
Lovejoy Ragnar -- as small and as childlike as he is, Ziotea is still smaller. His perpetual cheer annoys her if she spends too much time in his company, in large part because she just isn't happy like that, and sees no reason to be. His (apparently) genuine affection was not something she trusted in their early years, and when they were both with Rodion in the metalworks she would be an angry, glowering little raincloud in Rodion's shadow. She's since come to realize that he really /is/ that kind and compassionate, and she has no flaming idea how to respond to it. She's amazed that he hasn't gotten himself killed yet, or failed out of training. She's even more shocked that he's escaped the seminary without becoming jaded, and she really hopes he doesn't lose that.
She does consider him a friend, after a fashion, and even enjoys having him around -- though not for too long, or she ends up even grumpier than usual. Still, he's someone she can relax around, and if someone hurts him you'd better believe that they will have slightly over 100 lbs of pure, vicious fury in their face (and possibly in their gut, as that's a better target).
@The Angry Goat Yerokhin "Stina" -- a giant even as a child, he towered over little Ziotea, and initially she avoided him out of pure fear. As she began to conquer her fear of various things, this included him, and she has since seen him as a measurement for excellence and is determined to surpass him. Or at least kick his butt in a fight once.
Hm...Ziotea goes through the motions of worship, but she makes no secret that she doesn't think the gods are good, and this includes Lord Varya. She's more or less loyal, but it's not so much out of devotion as because she doesn't see a good alternative. There's really not much point in fighting a hopeless battle, especially since there's nothing to work towards. People are awful, etc.
If that doesn't bother him, these two might end up a very strange sort of friends -- y'know, that thing where they are constantly fighting but actually enjoy it? She'd definitely want to face him in combat, and beating him is a longtime goal (I don't know if she's managed it yet. Probably not). She might also try to goad him into verbal arguments, about religion or really anything. I can see him being in some conversation, it coming more or less to an end, and if she overheard part of it she'd plunk herself down and just contradict him, just to argue about it. She probably insults him regularly. If they have been on reasonably good terms for a while, he was one of the very few people who could get away with commenting on her appearance, particularly her size. Her response would be to call him a hulking giant or something similar. If not, there was a period of time where a comment on it would send her flying at him in fury, though she's past that now.
@deathbringer Astraea, as a fullblooded Lanostran, is not someone Ziotea likes. The way Lanostre and its Lady surrendered and just abandoned who they were leaves a bitter taste in her mouth, all the more because she's half Lanostran herself. Part of her animosity comes from a personal grudge against the goddess for failing to protect the mother she knows only by name and her two childhood caretakers, and seeing Astraea take pride in that same heritage twists a knife in her gut. Some of it is congealed resentment from a time when the fair girl was everything fiery Ziotea was not. And some of it is a growing jealousy for the fact that Rodion seems to like having her around.
@Drakey Rodion -- her dearest companion. She can barely remember a time when she didn't know him, and the idea of a life without him in it seems...lacking. The relationship is a relic of...not happier times, but more innocent ones. She simply does not form the sort of connection they share anymore. He has her complete trust and her unwavering devotion. He is the one Ziotea confides in, and she does so willingly. She keeps few secrets from him, if any -- though one such was how she'd run away when he was caught. It ate at her for years before she was able to discuss it with him, though they've since gotten past it. While she does laugh, Rodion is the only one who can make her smile -- her usual expression of joy and cheer is either a fierce, defiant baring of teeth that really doesn't merit the term "smile" or else a gentling of her hard eyes and a slight upward curve of her mouth. Truthfully, she isn't happy all that often.
He is best able to disperse the worst of even her darkest foul moods, and there's a certain gentle affection in how she treats him that she shows nobody else. "Friend" doesn't begin to cover it, and even "family" falls short of explaining what for Ziotea is a unique and treasured relationship. Even when she wanted to be alone, there was always room for him as well, though it's only in the past year or two that she's started realizing how much she's taken his presence for granted. For her the question is not so much whether she loves Rodion -- she's known that to be a yes for almost as long as she's known him -- but rather just what sort of love it is, and asking didn't even occur to her until they started approaching the final days at the Seminary.
@Lovejoy Aaah, I see. I was figuring ether vials were required for basic magic, that animals were not a good source of ether, and...a few other things. If the vials aren't needed for basic combat, then yeah, letting her actually /use/ that is an issue. Maybe she can use some sort of negation to mess it up so it's weaker or something. ^.^;; As for replenishing her own ether...well there is the whole issue of getting it inside her, but she might be able to refill her vials? I'm going to have to toy with this, and figure out how I want to work this. Draining people is very costly, and I would *think* draining a nearby vial would not be -- since she has her own vials she can use, after all. There needs to be something to keep people from using other people's stored reserves or that'd be the first goal of any priest vs. priest battle....Eh, I might just leave her with the basic negation and have the draining thing be something that she would use as a last resort. I will think on it! I'm tired and just plain babbling now. @.@
She's Omestrian, or at least her ether is, so it packs a considerable punch. I didn't realize that the spells using the vials were superpowered. I did want to trade off most of her lesser skills (most of the standard stuff -- she's actually not bad at all at generating heat so a personal aegis might very well work, and countering attacks as with the paling falls under a function of force -- so she can, but she has to go about it differently. Her paling itself is pretty weak, but she can use force to counter incoming attacks in much the same way. Summoning spellblades and sustained enhancement are not in her wheelhouse, nor could she steady her aim directly (she'd need to make herself warm instead, but that's rarely an issue). Enhancing her endurance is also out in all but the most dire of circumstances -- she could for a short while, but the cost to her is far higher than to most others, so she'd be helpless after. I'd say 15-30 minutes, tops. She did a lot of exercising to make up for this.
If there's shields and such, I'm far more comfortable letting her throw people around and blow things up with impunity. And sure, if she used a vial spell she could totally take out a tank. A drop from a vial probably is enough to let her punch right through palings, and that's probably what she uses it for most. I'll work on this more later too. *collapses on the keys and goes to sleep*
Appearance: Though not unattractive, Father Ilya Bjornlie seems to think he's handsomer than he is. His body has a definitively light tone and though not as burly as most other successful inquisitors, his physique is quite well toned below the layers of official garb he wears. Every piece of kit, identification, and medal is always present, but half of it is always at a slightly altered angle. The belt droops slightly on his left, his official sword is slightly loose in its scabbard, and his goggles rest haphazardly around his neck, yet his powerful rifle is perfectly secured in its strap on his back.
Father Ilya stays carefully clean shaven, and less successfully keeps a mostly charming smile on his face. His hair is short and styled somewhat, as he attempts to play off of the asymmetry of his outfit and play up his blue eyes and strong jawline. The look is practical as well, since there is no chance hair being caught in the straps of his googles or being caught in the seal when he's aiming a shot.
The image is ripped from deviantart. Apparently the character is from a show called Generation Kill? No idea, but he looks close to what I'm going for and has approximately the right level of projected cockiness.

Personality: It would be wrong to call Father Ilya Bjornlie an asshole. Yes, he can be abrasive, and yes, he mostly sees others as tools, but he's in truth a decent person. Well, alright. He's not a bad person. To most people.
Father Ilya is goal driven, and his life's goal is to be a great and successful hero. This means a number of things. First is to be exceedingly good at war, which is why he has gone through the Red Seminary - learning combat, magic, and tactics along the way. Second is to have grand exploits, hence being the very first Inquisitor to volunteer for this voyage. Third, is to recognized and loved for his achievements. This may be the most difficult part.
Father Ilya does his best to project the image of a charming war hero, but that only applies to the general public. With his peers, he is far less concerned with appearances, and far more concerned with work and results. As such, he is often dismissive and irritable to people who insist on wasting time without something useful to offer him, and is a natural-born workaholic. He plans his days to the level of 10 minutes when he can, and in the pursuit of efficiency (in turn for the pursuit of glory), genuinely considered sleeping more productive than spending "free time" with other Inquisitors. As a result, the people he is closest to are not friends so much as business partners.
The inspiration for Ilya's dedication comes in large part from Varya himself, as well as his chosen favorites over the centuries. However, one would be wrong to mistake his wrote memorization of the nation's grandest tales of conquest for pure devotion. He lies somewhere in between a fanatic servant and a lone wolf. He serves Varya because Varya is the greatest - everybody knows that, and to stand against such greatness is to guarantee ones failure. So instead, he works with this font of glory, because he is nothing if not practical in pursuing his ambition.

Background: Poverty has never truly been known to Father Ilya Bjornlie, but that is not to say he has lived without want. Even before his time in the Red Seminary, Father Ilya was born into the wealthy Bjornlie family well above the surface of the ice surrounding Magnagrad. His father was a military man, and his mother the heiress to a booming ether business. However, both of them knew the dangers that lurked in cushy affluence, and so Ilya's only tastes of natural foods were major holidays and when a sufficiently important guest visited that he was required to dine with his parents while they worked their social circles. Indeed, though he spent more time with servants and slaves than his parents, they were omnipresent in his life. Not one day passed where he did not have an assignment. Some days he was exercising his control over his ether for as long as he could stay awake. Other days he was tested against challenger after challenger his father's closest companion selected from the slave pits. Periodically, his mother would take him along to social gatherings, and even leave him with "friends" of hers who needed to be charmed, or have facts she told him leaked on "accident." Such was Ilya's life until he enrolled with the Red Seminary and said farewell to his parents for the last time in 5 years.
Though Ilya had achieved some impressive feats with ether, he was not nearly the best with magic in the Red Seminary. Though Ilya had defeated some skilled foes from the slave pits, he was not nearly the best fighter in the Red Seminary. Though Ilya had charmed some cynical nobles in courts, he was seen right through at the Red Seminary. With all of his skills not holding him above the rest, there was only one option available to Ilya Bjornlie: Do Better.
Practice, study, and planning became Ilya's life. In his second year a relatively unique talent was revealed within him: marksmanship. Though forgone by most Inquisitors, Ilya's steady hand and keen eye found targets twice as easily compared to his peers. Perhaps it was the legacy of his father, or perhaps simply because he had seen them work a hundred times before, but Ilya Bjornlie took to the gun as readily as ice to the sea. He took this strength and promptly began pushing himself. Nowdays, he is the premier, if only, marksman among the Inquisitors.
As it turns out, Ilya's eye was not only keen when it came to shooting targets, but also for strategic planning. Though occasionally thwarted by unexpected turns of events, the joke runs that Ilya could plan better and for more contingencies in an hour with a notebook than an army captain could with a day and a map. Though never put to the test, there are solid odds this is true. In the Red Seminary, he was initially praised for his capabilities. However, when they failed to push Ilya's brain by changing the situation, they began to change the rules. As soon situations - simulated or in practice, moved beyond his contingencies Ilya's actions began to break apart. Although practiced has improved this somewhat, Ilya still flounders when pressed for time and options. Indeed, instead of becoming more adaptable, his training has mostly increased his capacity to plan for a massive number of contingencies.

Talents/Ethereal Abilities: Ilya is likely the best marksmen among the Inquisitors, which is, in truth, a relatively easy feat since nearly none bother learning more than the basics. Still, his aim is top notch, and he personally honed the ability to coat his bullets in a specialized paling, helping them to slide cleanly through the air and whatever winds it may hold. Thanks to this innovative technique (which he is attempting to teach to the army as "Father Ilya's Piercing Paling"), his range and precision are far above expected levels. Given a chance to aim, he can take out a target from nearly a thousand feet away. ((For reference, the shortest range of the modern top 10 snipers is ~4000 feet))
Some would argue that it's too much to call Ilya a tactical genius, but Ilya would disagree if it didn't mean going against his public image of moderate modesty. His plans are incredibly in depth - even if when they fall apart, they completely and utterly fall apart. If something isn't accounted for, its because he can't quite grasp the very idea of it happening and as such will flounder in the face of it.
Ilya's spells officially revolve around the manipulation of water. He could, hypothetically, start messing with someone's blood, but to manipulate water so impure takes a major chunk of ether. In addition, the existence of a paling multiplies the enormity of the task, so that is almost never done. Indeed, the manipulation of water in the world is not what Father Ilya is known for - though he wears a tank of two gallons on his back beneath his cloak. Instead, its for his bullet paling, which he generally draws upon tiny slivers of his own ether for - unless he needs enough oomph to pierce a paling projected by his target.

Character Relationships: ((Not yet decided. I'll need to talk with people and review everyone's CS once/if I'm accepted.))
Good stuff @Draken! Iβll give it a closer look tomorrow but upon a first read through I think youβre good! Weβll talk more about his water/illusion magic tomorrow.
After @Scout posts his character Iβll be closing character submissions and weβll be able to start the IC!
@shylarah if there's one thing I know is fun from experience, it's messing with short and easily angered people :P ... as for if that's actually within Stina's character... perhaps. we'll see how he continues to open up. at least he can blame Ziotea's wavering faith on the obvious turmoil of emotions constantly inside her, and tolerate it somewhat.
@lovejoy added a bit more clear limits on Stina's abilities
"Stina knows his own limits, and one of them is the use of vial ether - he never showed much talent with it, and is never one to waste such a limited and vital resource, and therefore generally avoids it. as it is, this means that using his bursts of speed more than once or twice per day is a rather poor idea, since it will leave him more and more exhausted."
basically I don't want to have to deal with vials or anything. I'm powerful enough without that sort of ability, anyway :P
