People who limit themselves to gender only in return limit their possibilities for roleplay.

Why not look into actual legitimate methods of screening RPers, such as comparing RP styles, RP preferences, schedules, posting frequency, etc. Why not ask for a writing sample

So the normal, courteous, and appropriate way.

This whole idea is basically “oh, you’re the wrong gender, even if your writing style is what I’m looking for, but bye”. It’s unacceptably discriminative, sexist, and just awful. Looking for compatibility with style, tone, and other aspects if acceptably discriminative – sex and gender are not. Discriminating based on sex and gender will not be okay. I mentioned a joke earlier how I only write with “male Hispanics from Guatemala” to make a point.

I was prepared to write a novel of a response to this topic, but since the moment has gone, I'll just say this one thing: no matter what either side feels about this, people will like what they're going to like. You guys and gals can spend all week debating this, but it won't change the fact that there'll be some who prefer to write with the opposing gender. Whether that's because they feel more comfortable with the opposing sex as their writing partners or it has sexual/romantic motivations behind it, no amount of debating and/or bitching will change their minds.

And whether or not you are willing to accept this is entirely on you. The fact of the matter is that people are stubborn. They'll do whatever they want regardless if others find it sexist and/or discriminatory.

Why cut off 50% of your your options in most RPS. (yes trans etx exist but most basic RP run male/female)

By doing that you limit ideas, skills as a writer and more.

@Altered TundraAs evidenced by this very thread, some people change their minds and are willing to let go of these kinds of restrictions. It's not like the discussion isn't worth having just because most people aren't going to flip sides.

I do think these discussions are very necessary and it also allows people to vent out frustrations that may be built up over months or years. To be really truthful, I had no idea what gender identity was until maybe 18 months ago, pushing up to two years. I'm thirty and and for up to 28 years male is male, female is female, gays are fags, V8s, beers, burnouts, fucken sick Australia brosky, bla, bla, bla. We had a national survey recently on whether homosexuals should be allowed to marry and the propaganda and confusion was through the roof, not to mentioned it cost billions because the government can't make up their mind. I will say I ended up letting my sister fill out my form cause she's more logical in these situations and her opinion was probably better than mine as I was on the fence about it.

So it is hard for me in some cases to understand what the problem is because we do have a specific culture in Australia and any sexism debates here are actually a newer thing (or completely ignored), and I can say that I'm only half an hour from bogan central which is equivalent to your US rednecks.

So pretty much, my view is something that could change in the future, but it may not be something that will change overnight due to a few people's opinions. Afterall we are constantly learning and have to adjust and understand these views at our own, personal pace.

Yeah, just trying to kill a discussion with “nobody will ever agree” doesn’t seem very productive for communicating and discussing these things.

@PrinceAlexus In my personal opinion, choosing one gender over the other is not as simply as "limiting one's RPing options". When it comes down to it, it's about personal preference. Whatever personal feelings you have about it, be it because you like certain ideas and are blocked out because you aren't the desired gender that the person is seeking or whatever, it's not our place to judge. You can have certain feelings about it, sure, but putting others on blast like this thread has done isn't the way to go imo.

@Drache Yes, I know.

@Inkarnate Yeah because Tundy totally likes to kill these with his words.

@Inkarnate Would you rather I've sounded like a broken record?

@PrinceAlexusI wasn't pointing the finger at you per-se. I mean, this thread in itself puts anyone who has ever put up RP requests for the opposite gender ever on blast. Now, I'm not saying they're right in doing that, but who are we to judge them for their choices simply because we disagree with it?

something something it's morally and ethically wrong something something it is unacceptably discriminative something something normalizes people trying to creep on others because of their gender something something.

@Inkarnate I'm not denying that some who seek out the opposite gender do it for romantic and/or sexual motivations, but not everyone who does go for the opposing gender does that. Some just feel more comfortable writing said sex/gender. It doesn't mean they're in the wrong. All it means is that, much like everyone else in the world, they have different preferences just like you and I do.

This has nothing to do what they are comfortable writing, but more discriminating on who they write with. It is unacceptable. Full stop. The apologetic normalization isn't something I feel is appropriate, either, personally. I feel like this is one of the reasons Iwaku removed gender from their account fields, and in fact I’m positive it is.

@Inkarnate Way to cut out half of my message.

Never did I once say that it was "okay" for said people to "discriminate" against other genders/sexes. All I was saying(and am continuing to do so) is that people are free to choose which gender/sex they write with. If you read(the "reed" version, not "red") my previous message, you would see that I'm not siding with either side of this debate. I'm merely offering a perspective from someone who has been on both sides(the side who has requested RPs with the opposite gender and the side who didn't give a flying shit).

And I think it is problematic whichever way you spin it. Basically, I’m not sure how we can get any further than that with our current dialogue as it is.

@InkarnateI suppose this is just one of those things we'll have to agree to disagree on.
